  4. 2018 Tyce Freije vs Alex Mosconi 2020 Tyce Freije vs Bryer Hall Unfortunately our guy came out on the losing end of those wars. Mosconi was state runner up in 2018, Freije was sidelined the majority of the regular season due to injury that season and then went ahead and wrestled the postseason even though his hand needed surgically repaired. Hall was state runner up in 2020. Freije lost an overtime bout to Kervin at EMD Holiday Classic, and Kervin would go on to win state title over Hall in that exciting match. Tyce won the NC Semi-State at 120 in 2017 and went on to finish 8th in the state, only state qualifying freshman in the weight class. Tyce again won the semi-state in 2019 and went on to finish 4th at state at 138. Bias, but if we were one of the 49 states that has wrestlebacks, then Freije would have likely been a 4x state medalist. That’s how it goes though. It’s a tough tournament, you have to win your matches.

  5. Bradbury Portage vs Birge Frankfort Birge was the returning state Champ, Bradbury was going to War with Alex Ramos every week. Bradbury lost to Ramos beat him for a regional title, setting up the match. Bradbury got the W, then went on to continue his rivalry to Ramos losing to him Under the lights.

  6. I have added up the points of about one team per day this week, so without @maligned's work, I'd find out in 2022 who is in Team State for 2021.

  8. Semi-State is a tough week. It's where many dreams are realized and others are crushed. Every year, we see quality matches take place in the ticket round that would've been better suited the next weekend at Bankers Life, but unfortunately in our system, we only get to see them once. What are some of the best ticket matches you have ever seen? Off the top of my head 2015 #5 Mason Parris (Lawrenceburg) vs. #12 Ben Stewart (Cathedral) - A brawl for the ages that saw Mason Parris was not to be played with. The freshman came out swinging and beat Stewart 3-1. 2016 #4 Zach Melloh (Cathedral) vs. #13 D.J. Brookbank (Perry Meridian) - Fireworks... First word that comes to mind when I think about this match. Melloh was a returning state medalist up from 126 and had beaten Brookbank in two prior meetings, including a senior night thriller at Perry Meridian, and was heavily favored in their third match-up. Brookbank, however, became a man possessed and put Melloh to his back in the opening moments of the match and upended him 13-11 to punch his ticket to state in his first trip to New Castle as a senior. 2020 Riley Rust (Center Grove) vs. Justice Cash (Bloomington North) - An emotional match-up that saw the Center Grove stud beat probably one of the best to never qualify for state.

  14. No shame in that. Rosbottom and Jankowski were national caliber and Minton was just a fearless animal that tossed everyone to their backs (including Rosbottom in that regional match). There were some other nice names at 145 at state that year, but Rosbottom and Minton steamrolled them into the final. Still a real shame to this day the state runner-up Jankowski couldn't be in that mix on the big stage.

  15. It was 7-5. I had to go back and look it up. I can't forget Ferguson's 1st Round match at State against Jeremiah Reitz. Reitz was coming off a State Title and Ferguson was out most of the season until the tournament. Ferguson started strong and was up 13-2 after the 2nd period, but ran out of gas in the 3rd. Reitz outscored him 11-4 in the 3rd period as Ferguson's only points came on allowed escapes. Final score Ferguson wins 17-13. One of the best Friday night matches I can recall.

  21. 3 vs 8 is a tough one but not horrible. I think Watson would be a clear favorite. I would say Conway vs Rust would be a much closer match and a worse draw.

  29. My vote goes to Carson Willis, but it's hard to pick which year was the worst. This kid should have been a multiple time state placer, but had a murderer's row of Ticket Rounds. His case alone should be all you need to add wrestle backs. 2018 - Ty Mills (2,3,2,3) 2017 - Graham Rooks (3,4,4,1) 2016 - Brock Hudkins (5,SQ,1,1) 2015 - Jacob Skaggs (SQ,8)

  31. So true..other than Rosbottom winning that one 15-10, he and Minton had 4 pins and a tech in their other 5 matches on the weekend before the final.

  32. Here are 2A scores through regional. Remember that the best score from each semi-state, plus the next 6 best scores regardless of semi-state gain automatic bids. The final column is the number of points available this weekend for each team.

  35. 2016- Evansville 106- Both Freshman Ticket Round At the time #1 Cayden Rooks vs. #8 Asa Garcia Future- 3x State Champ, 3rd vs. 2x State Champ, Runner Up 1st 0-0 after 1st period 2nd Cayden choose bottom 1-0 Cayden escapes 3rd Asa chooses bottom 1-1 Asa escapes 3-1 Asa takedown 3-3 Cayden reversal with 6 seconds OT - draw OT2 - Cayden get rode out OT3 - Asa reversal +2 and +2 backs with 17 seconds Final 7-3 Ty Mills (2x Runner Up & 2x 3rd) was in this bracket . Ty ends up winning this 2016 106 Semi State . A lot of things could of changed in this State Bracket if this Death Draw didn’t happen I believe. Would Cayden be a 4x State Placer . Would Cayden be a Semi Finalist that year Would Cayden get his rematch that year Wish I had video of this Semi State match, anyone has it please DM me .

  42. Still the worst ever. #3 Minton upsets returning state champ and #1-ranked Rosbottom at regionals after Rosbottom had previously controlled him 3 or 4 times that year. #1 Rosbottom draws into #2 Jankowski. Rosbottom wins and goes on to beat Minton in the SS and state finals. If I remember right, Jankowski had teched Minton in their only meeting.

  50. By Drew Hughes Anyone that has been around Indiana wrestling in the last decade probably knows the name Chad Red. In high school Red had about as good of a career as anyone could ask for winning 4 state titles and going a perfect 183-0. Along with this he won 3 of the toughest off- season tournaments in the country; Fargo, Super 32, and FloNationals. He finished his high school career ranked #1 in the country at 132lbs along with being ranked #8 out of all seniors in his graduating class. Being one of the most sought after recruits Red decided on Nebraska as his college destination. Red said “I chose Nebraska because of Jordan Burroughs and the coaching staff is very helpful, and my family thought they were the best coaches for me.”. Red has very well in college so far where he has become a 2 time All-American as well as a Big Ten finalist. He has had some great matches in his college career with one of the best coming in the blood round of NCAA’s his freshman year. In this match Red pinned the two-time defending National Champion Dean Heil in the first period to become an All-American. Red also placed 3rd at last year’s Big Ten championship and qualified for the cancelled 2020 NCAA championships where he was named a NWCA first team All-American. This season Red is off to a great start with a 4-1 record and his lone loss coming from Iowa’s Jaydin Eierman. Red is currently ranked 6 th in the country at 141 and in the upcoming weeks will get the chance to wrestle #1 ranked Sebastian Rivera before the Big Ten tournament. Now the big question that people are asking right now for most college seniors are if they will be returning for a 6 th year. Due to Covid the NCAA has made it so this year does not count towards your eligibility giving athletes the chance to compete for an extra year. With that being said Red is planning on wrestling next season and will still have a shot at being a 4 time All- American and possibly a National Champion. After college Red plans to stay in Nebraska and wrestle for the NWTC where he would compete internationally in an attempt to make world and Olympic teams. He also plans on coaching and we could see that being anywhere from the college level to even coming back to Indiana to coach at Red Cobra Wrestling Academy where his father, Chad Red Sr., is the coach. Looking far down the road we could also see him coaching his little brother to 4 high school state titles but that wouldn’t be until at least 2034.
