  1. Information Here is a little side project I've been working on. I've done it in previous years with just some friends and family, but this year I decided to open it up to anyone. The idea is pretty simple. You're given a certain amount of "money" and you are then able to "buy" one wrestler in each weight class. Everything was based off of the Indiana mat brackets with rankings. The accuracy of the pricing is only as accurate as the rankings provided. The winner may receive a small prize, but no guarantees. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. (Especially if there are major mistakes and/or problems) Pricing: The pricing of wrestlers was determined by a Monte Carlo simulation of the entire tournament that was ran 1,000,000 times per weight class. The price is based on the average placement of the wrestler, causing some interesting outcomes. To be honest, this was probably overkill, but I enjoyed it. If people are interested, I can post more later about this simulation and elaborate a little more. LINK P.S. The form will close on Friday Night at exactly 6 PM

    Saving Seats

Personally 5 seats ok but rows is unacceptable.. people who get there early and stand in line should be able to sit anywhere and not be denied because someone is trying to save seats for people who feel they can get there whenever they want.. Just my honest opinion..

  3. Just a shout out to the people who bring the Mon. - Wed. articles. I have really enjoyed, and anticipated reading these tales through out the season, for several years. Thank you!

    Saving Seats

Everyone save me a seat. I will decide which one I like best when I get there.

  5. Don't get me wrong...love me some Y2 and OTR...but does anybody else miss @Dingo Brigade pontificating from the Oldsmobile inside the garage/bunker with the 20watt overhead dome light shining on that the Edge from U2 hat wearing cranium? #BringBackDingo

    Saving Seats

I think there is common etiquette that should be followed. Trying to save 100 seats so every extended family member and friend you have ever known can sit together is BS. I once had a father trying to save 20 rows get super mad that I dared sit in his imaginary kingdom that was over 50% empty. I still consider that guy one of the biggest dopes I have ever ran across.

  8. 2 of the nicest kids you will ever meet. We have competed against them since 5/6 grade and not only are they great wrestlers, but outstanding kids. I always enjoy talking to them and wish them the best this weekend and at Indiana Tech.

Also it seems many teams are seeking some very good out of state competition. There are a few kids who are undefeated within the confines of the Hoosier state.

I love the rush of trying to get seats low even when you’ve waited in line but would love even more to pay extra ahead of time to show up twenty minutes early and have a seat all ready. The IHSAA can have my money for that luxury!

I hate that we have to evacuate after the Saturday morning session and reenter for the evening session. Why not have the IU vs Purdue dual during that down time? Everyone could watch some BIG10 wrestling before the evening Finals.

  16. Madison used to wrestle and practice at their junior high. Back in 1989 I think they added onto the high school gym and built our 100x50 practice room above weight room and football locker room. Added a few touches to it since I got here in 2010.

25 years ago we would stand in line between rounds so we could get lower, middle seats. When we would get there, there would be Tape across several rows and newspapers over many seats left from the round before. I would do my part in cleaning trash from the sections and gather up all the tape and throw away all the discarded newspapers ! ! !

  21. Nice Job. And THANK YOU for putting the ranking# off to the side of the wrestlers names! During the broadcast on Sunday they did not include the actual rank. I initially thought it was because the rankings may not be officially endorsed by the IHSAA, but Rakestraw and Goebel kept referring to the rankings over and over again. I really think if they would just include the ranking off to the side of their names (like they do in NCAA), it would make the pairings presentation make a lot more sense -- especially to someone who is not otherwise familiar with the wrestlers by name. The proof is in the results year after year -- you all put a lot of time into assigning a rank to a wrestler, and for the most part you are usually spot on.

  23. Running a tournament is never just a simple thing as many people would expect. I've ran a few smaller tournaments, nothing to the magnitude of the ones you run. The ongoing list of options they have of situating a tournament can easily be over looked. A lot goes into preparing for such tournaments. Mistakes happen and you owned up to it. I think I can say it on behalf of many folks here, we certainly appreciate all the work you do to get these things situated and running. Trackwrestling is a gift and a curse sometimes, but doesn't take away all the hard work the tournament staff and directors put into it. With a bunch of fun going Evansville fans this past Saturday, it's the first time I've heard the crowd start yelling stalling on a computer. Not sure I ever saw officials warn the computer for the stalling though.

  24. This error had nothing to do with the IHSAA ... they have been busting it on your behalf and are working hard to make this a great experience for everyone. If you have to throw someone under the bus throw me. Mark Durham. The buck for this TW mistake has to land somewhere. They were built this morning while I was in transit from some Evansville events back to Indy ... I should have pulled over at the Exit 87 Country Mark gas station on I69 south and checked them before they went public. I didn't. As it turns out they were set-up correctly, but there is a little check-box at the bottom of the build screen that says, more or less, "use saved lines instead of default lines" ... well, it needs to be checked and wasn't. And you know the rest of the story. Again, I am sorry. The "Show" was fantastic.

  25. Key matchups: 106 Carlton Perry (WC) vs Logan Miller (BROWN) in the 1st round. With only 5 wrestlers, Warren really needs these points. Brownsburg has to have lots of people advance too. Perry defeated Miller 8-2 earlier this season 106 Blaze Garcia (AVON) vs Suhas Chandi (Carmel) in 1st round. Rough matchup for the freshman - if he can win I consider those huge bonus points for Avon 113 Jacob Moran (PORT) vs Cole Ross (EMD) in 1st round. Brutal draw for Mater Dei - if he wins then Portage is essentially done. If Moran wins as expected then that is a big loss for EMD 113 Zeke Seltzer (CATH) vs KT Nelson (BROWN) in 2nd round. Nelson is hot, but can he control Seltzer? I’m guessing no, which would put Nelson with a 5th place finish as best possible scenario 120 Brayden Lowery (RONC) vs Tyler Conley (AVON) in 1st round. Likely that Avon loses one of their 7 here Lowery is too much 120 Blake Boarman (EMD) vs Chris Stewart (WC) in 1st round. Winner gets Riley Bettich (CROWN) in the 2nd round. What a group of 4! I think Stewart has the chance to pull an upset here but advantage Boarman. Warren absolutely has to have Stewart get to the points rounds to have a shot. Boarman vs Bettich - WOW! Loser can only place 5th at best WOW. Big points swing possible 120 Kysen Montgomery (BROWN) vs Carson Eldred (Westfield) in 1st round. The two have split matches this year. Montgomery has his work cut out for him, but it’s a big swing match for Brownsburg 126 Brock Peele (PORT) vs Brayden Curtis (YORK) in 1st round. Winner gets Lukasz Walendzak (CATH) in 2nd round. Another stacked group of 4. Peele is great but can he knock off both of these? If Curtis wins, can Walendzak score on the solid senior? 126 Kane Egli (EMD) vs Logan Wagner (Zionsville) in 1st round. Another tough first round for Mater Dei. Wagner is very experienced - but I think it’s close enough and Egli could provide the minor upset. Winner gets Hunter Watts in the 2nd round! 126 Jesse Mendez (CROWN) vs Hunter Watts (Jimtown) in semifinals. There’s a huge difference in points (22 vs 13) between 1st and 3rd place. Can Mendez repeat his 5-2 win over Watts? 132 Ricky Hegedus (PORT) vs Drake Campbell (BROWN) in 1st round. Winner gets Alec Vidya (RONC) in 2nd round. Yet another crazy quarter-bracket! Could be a BIG points move if the winner of Hegedus/Campbell can beat Viduya. Viduya has to score big for Roncalli 138 Jaden Reynolds (AVON) vs Dylan Goudy (Western) in 1st round. Goudy will be a tough matchup, but I’d consider these some critical bonus points if Reynolds can win it. 145 Jacob Burford (CROWN) vs Antwaun Graves (WC) in 1st round. Winner has a good chance to get to the final 4 so that would be big points for whoever comes out ahead here. 152 Tyler Conley (AVON) vs Elliott Rodgers (CATH) in 1st round. WOW this is a blockbuster in terms of points because either of these could go a long way in the bracket for some major points. I think Rodgers needs to finish top 2 to give Cathedral a shot at the title. 152 Sam Fair (PERRY) vs Jake Schoenegge (CO EAST) in 1st round. WOW another great matchup! Pretty much a must-win for both teams cause these are high scorers, and without them neither team has the numbers to make it up 160 Peyton Asbury (BROWN) vs everybody. Asbury has a pretty good draw. Can he make it through to the semifinals where he would likely see Slivka (CATH)? A 3rd/4th place finish for Asbury would be nice points 170 Eli Mahan (RONC) vs Thierry Jean-Baptiste (BROWN) in 1st round. Mahan is electric - can Brownsburg draft a strategy to slow him down and steal a win here? I don’t see it happening 170 Nick South (COL EAST) vs Joe Walker (Mishawaka) in 2nd round. South won a 2-1 decision at the Al Smith. Columbus East will need him to win it all to keep in the team race. If he defeated Walker, South could see Mahan in the semifinals 182 Carson Brewer (AVON) is the only one at the weight on one of the teams listed. Should be big points for Avon here 195 Austin Lane (PERRY) and Ethan Potosky (CROWN) both are up against higher ranked opponents in 1st round. Tough for either to advance 220 Lawson Aiken (BROWN) will have a rough 2nd round match against the winner of Kyle Cornwell (Elwood) vs Joey Kidwell (W Lafayette). Aiken knocked off the #1 wrestler at semistate, can he keep the hot hand? 220 Jacob Bolte (COL EAST) vs Drew Webster (N Montgomery) in 2nd round. Webster is a dangerous opponent for Bolte. Columbus East needs every single point it can get 285 Dorian Keys (BROWN) vs Yehezquel DeVault (Penn) in 2nd round. Heavyweight is always so unpredictable, but if Keys can get some big points here for Brownsburg it would be a huge boost for them

  26. By STEVE KRAH stvkrh905@gmail.com It’s an Indiana tradition unique to wrestling and two brothers from Bellmont High School will follow in the footsteps of so many Braves that came before them. Qualifiers for the IHSAA State Finals will parade into Bankers Life Fieldhouse before first round of the tournament Friday, Feb. 15 and Jon and Isaac Ruble were be representing their family as well as their storied mat program. “That’s pretty exciting, especially for their parents, Becky and Joe,” says Bellmont head coach and former state champion Paul Gunsett. “They’ve done a lot for those two. They’ve traveled everywhere for these two to wrestle. They’ve earned it with all the time and effort they’ve put in.” Jon Ruble is one of Bellmont’s captains and often leads the squad in during warm-ups at practice. “He’s a leader in our program,” says Gunsett of the older Ruble boy. “He’s been real reliable for me. He’s pretty special. He spends a lot of time with our younger kids. He spends more time with them than he probably needs to. He’s helped groom them and made them better.” Freshmen Carter Thomas (120) and Dominic Litchfield (113) are Isaac aka Ike’s usual workout partner during practice. Like many wrestling families in and around Decatur, Ind., there is a mat legacy. Joe Ruble is one of Bellmont’s many State Finals qualifiers, competing at Market Square Arena in 1991. The boys’ uncle Paul qualified for State and blew out his knee the week of the meet and was unable to compete. Joe Ruble’s uncle Kent Buuck was a a standout Braves wrestler. His best friend was Bill Schultz (uncle to Becky Ruble). When Buuck died in a highway accident before his senior year, Schultz dedicated his training to Buuck and became the second state champion in Bellmont program history, winning the IHSAA heavyweight title in 1977. The Braves’ first state winner was Phil Lengerich (138 pounds in 1969). Gunsett reigned at 135 in 1988. On 10 other occasions, a Bellmont wrestler has ascended to the top of the victory platform —Chris Mahlan (185 in 1979), Brent Faurote (98 in 1981), Paul Baker(130 in 1988), Tim Myers (119 in 1993 and 130 in 1994), Jason Baker (125 in 1996), T.J. Hays (152 in 1996), John Sheets (103 in 2000), Matt Irwin (135 in 2006) and Billy Baker (215 in 2009). The Braves reigned as team state champions in 1987, 1988 and 1994 and were runners-up in 1979, 1999, 2006. Jon Ruble (36-6) took an early 2-0 lead and made it stand in beating Rochester senior Drew Sailors in the Fort Wayne Semistate championship match. “I got that two-point lead and I’ve been riding leg stuff all year so I put the legs in and tried to ride it out and possibly get turns,” says Ruble, who was a state qualifier at 145 in 2018. “(Winning the semistate) means a lot. There’s such a big difference between second place and first place. You’re setting yourself up for that state run.” Both Ruble brothers —#DosRubles on social media — placed first at the Jay County Sectional and Jay County Regional. Isaac Ruble (36-6) placed second at semistate. Sharing the season and the State Finals experience with his sibling is something the older Ruble brother does not take lightly. “This is the only time we get to wrestle together,” says Jon Ruble. “This means the world to me. “We talk about it all the time.” What does Jon see in Isaac the athlete? “He’s a competitive kid,” says Jon Ruble. “He always thinks he’s the best.” With his family history, Jon Ruble was destined to be a wrestler. “I had no other choice,” says Jon Ruble. “Being a part of Bellmont history means the world. They’ve had such a great program forever. To be a part of that tradition is amazing.” The youngest Ruble brother has soaked up his learning opportunities in his first high school season. “I learn things and try to get really good at the — like firemen’s carries,” says Isaac Ruble. “It really helps me out. “There are certain things (Gunsett) gets on me about — like keeping my head up — and I fix them.” Given the age and size difference, do the two brothers wrestle against each other? “I can’t hang with him,” says Isaac. “He’s pretty good.”

  33. I recall being at a Middle School tourney in West Virginia. Ike lost a tough match to another very good Indiana kid. What struck me was instead of sulking, he grabbed a tablet and studied his match. As he watched it, he would occasionally purse his lips with a slight shake of his head. I can recall thinking this is a kid that is bound for success. I often remind my own son of that scene and how you conduct yourself.

  48. I may be slightly biased...but Webster from North Montgomery at 220 has been on fire this post season. He's pinned everyone from sectional to semi-state including Irick from HSE, Young from Franklin Central and in the semi-state championship against Cornwell from Elwood after he got the takedown in the 1st OT. He will definitely make some noise this weekend. 220 will be fun to watch.

  49. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com In a town named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, a new wrestling star is rising in the south east corner of Indiana. South Dearborn sophomore Bryer Hall was a relative unknown last season. He put together a successful freshman season, and by the end of the year had worked his way up to No. 16 in the state rankings at 126 pounds. When the state tournament rolled around, people started to take notice of the newcomer. Hall rolled through his sectional as a freshman, winning every match by pin. He was just as dominant in the Richmond regional. He won his first round with a pin in just over a minute. In the second round he took on ranked senior Trevor Ragle (47-4) and pinned him in just 1:09. Then, in the final he went up against another talented wrestler in Centerville freshman Gabe Phillips, who is currently undefeated on the year and ranked No. 5 at 138. Just a little over two minutes into the match Hall injured Phillips shoulder, and Phillips was unable to go on. That injury ended the season for Phillips. Then, to start out the semistate, Hall injured another wrestler with almost the same move. It wasn’t anything intentional, but the injuries rattled Hall. “I didn’t want to hurt anyone,” Hall said. “It was upsetting that I ruined someone’s season and they could have went pretty far in the tournament. I thought it would be tough to go back and use the move because I didn’t want to hurt anyone else. But once I started wrestling again, instincts just took over and I had to get that thought out of my mind.” Hall won his ticket round semistate match 16-8 and then secured his biggest victory of his young career. He defeated former state champion Alec Viduya 11-5 to advance to the semistate championship. “We were hopeful that Bryer could get to state as a freshman,” South Deaerborn coach George Gardner said. “But we thought it might be a long shot when he had to go up against returning state champion Alec Viduya. But Bryer really took it to him in that match and handled that match much better than I thought he would.” Hall didn’t have enough in the tank to defeat Ethan Smiley in the final, who cruised to an 11-2 victory. Hall ended up placing sixth in state. He had wins over Kyle Lawson and Brycen Denny, but lost big to Cayden Rooks (tech fall) and Christian Meija (17-5). This season Hall is hoping to not have those big letdowns. “He ran out of gas in the semistate,” Gardner said. “Hopefully that won’t happen again. This year Hall is undefeated. He has stepped on the mat 33 times and each time had his hand raised in victory. He has moved up three weight classes and is currently ranked No. 2 at 145 pounds. “It felt pretty good to get noticed in the rankings for my hard work,” Hall said. Hall’s style of wrestling is difficult for others to scout. He calls himself a funky wrestler. “I am hard to figure out,” Hall said. “I’m just naturally funky. I move where my hips feel they should go.” That funkiness is especially helpful in scramble situations. “Bryer is a tremendous scrambler,” Gardner said. “He doesn’t have a signature takedown. He just makes things happen. He’s really hard to scout because he doesn’t do the same thing very often.” Hall could potentially see Warren Central’s Antwaun Graves in the New Castle semistate semifinal. If so, that is a match that could be particularly interesting. Hall won the regular season battle 4-3. “Anything can happen Saturday,” Gardner said. “He has to go out and wrestle his best each match.” Hall said his biggest wrestling accomplishment so far was placing fourth at Fargo over the summer at 138 pounds. He is hoping to top that with a state title this year. “My goal is to go undefeated and win state,” Hall said. “Last year I was nervous. This year I’m coming in a lot more confident.”
