  1. Have to admit......I entertained the idea with Silas. But ultimately.....had I done so, I would’ve outwardly been setting an example of athletics overriding academics. And that’s a major breach of the Allred’s household priority line. Being fully transparent.....Regardless of my sons success through relentless hard work, I still frequently think on the “what if’s”. He could legit be a sophomore right now and not such a young junior. Increased accolades in-state and Nationally would undoubtedly be attained. But ultimately....if athletics isn’t the back up plan to education/career, we’re setting our kids up for misaligned values. Make no mistake.....Silas plans to take the sport as far as his health, work ethic and God allows. But one reality we’ve embraced.....is that the events of tomorrow can never be fully predicted. And in retrospect......being young for his class and having to work harder to compensate for the age gap, has likely benefited his long term success and character much more than any medal could. And rest assured, as it pertains to the topic of age/success/recruiting......programs are very aware of an athletes age/projection. So in most instances.....being young and successful is even more appealing to recruiters. And that “success” I refer to here.....goes far beyond what an athlete accomplishes in their particular sport. Character & Classroom has to come first.

    First year?!

Dorian never wore a singlet in high school until this year as far I understand it. I have never filled out the finals form for announcements, but we should have said something like “his first time wearing a singlet in high school was this year”. His first match this year he was one locked hands from from a disqualification. A few weeks before the sectional he asked me, “So coach how do these overtime rules work”. He just said and asked some of the most ridiculous questions for someone having so much success. It’s kind of an inside thing on our team and seemed to get Dorian wrestling even better...and it cracked us up because he really didn’t know the answers or why the questions were funny. When he would ask a very basic question, guys would same something like “dude if you weren’t a rookie you would know that”. Again, an inside thing we had going with Dorian. Kind of had to be there. Lol. Snyder

    Thank you Indiana

Just wanted to take a second and say Thank you to all the supporters Brayden has had though the years. We new jumping up in weight this year would be a risk, but Brayden has never been one to back down from a challenge. No complaints or excuses 7th, 1st, 1st and 4th plus being one of the smallest in 126 he did a great job and as his father could not ask for anything more. We will be looking to the future and getting a great education thanks to this sport and who knows maybe an NAIA National title along the way. Congrats to everyone that won and those that did not keep working hard and you just might find yourself under the lights. To all the Seniors it's been one hell of a journey. Most of you we have wrestled with or against since elementary and though those battles made some great friends or dare i say family. Again Thank you Indiana for giving my son a sport with the best fans and competitors. The Curtis Family

  8. Beginning on Thursday, February 28th the Brownsburg Regional Wrestling Opportunities (RWO) will begin. All RWO's are Thursdays from 6PM - 7:30PM. Enter Door 15 and go up stairs to the room. Brownsburg has an incredible and huge new room. Plenty of space to lay the hammer! Each week you will get elite technique followed by lots of live. We had amazing numbers last year and look to continue that this year. I would assume that only 14 individuals accomplished their ultimate goal this season. Don't waste your off-season. Take advantage of it. I have never heard anyone say they regretted working too hard. People only regret not working hard enough! Snyder

  11. Always a good topic. I have it going 7-7 with Cernus(possible 4xer), Moran,Littel, Mendez(possible 4xer),Garcia(could’ve been 4xer),and South(this year) winning it for 2019 Then Rumph,Lee, South(2018),Graber,,Davidson,Parris and Pokorney for 2018 Cernus and Mendez are gonna be put up there with a very elite class when it’s all said and done in my opinion. Very few have lifted the 4 fingers and it will be fun to see if they can continue that path. Now I mentioned Asa as could’ve been a 4xer. He will definitely go down in the books as one of the best, but just missed getting into that elite club. This was by his own words of saying he was going at it the wrong way. He learned from it and the rest was history as we now know it. Can the 2 freshmen phenoms learn from this and continue to greatness, we shall see? I’m willing to bet that atleast one of these young men(Mendez), has shown by his accolades both in state and National tournaments, he’s on the right path. I don’t know a whole lot about Cernus other than what I see at State(complete dominance) that he has the right mind set. Just my opinions and some are factual.

Nope. That's why we didn't hold him back. It wasn't even a consideration; I couldn't justify it developmentally or academically. That said, I get why folks whose sons (and daughters) are very small do. Of course, I want him to do well, but wins and losses are secondary to just being able to compete and compete safely. It may just be my perception since my son is training at academies, but there are a lot of kids being held back. And, I haven't noticed the social stigma. It is certainly feasible, but I haven't noticed.

  15. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com “You’re still in this. It’s not over.” Elliott Rodgers kept hearing those words coming from his corner Saturday night in the championship match of the 152-pound weight class at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. With under a minute to go in the match Rodgers trailed Greenfield’s Cooper Noehre 7-4. Rodgers was wrestling for an individual title and a chance to all but secure a team title for the Irish. “It was nerve wracking,” Rodgers said. “It’s scary to be trailing like that. I don’t like it. But, you just have to think if you win, you win. If you lose, you lose. The coaches are in my corner yelling that it’s not over. That kept me going.” Rodgers earned an escape point to cut Noehre’s lead to 7-5. Then, with under 10 seconds remaining, he earned a takedown to tie the score and force overtime. It was the third overtime meeting this season between the two rivals. This time Rodgers pulled out a move he has been working on in practice but hadn’t shown Noehre yet – an inside trip. The move worked, and Rodgers won the match. The victory gave him his first state title and helped Cathedral win its second team title in as many years. “Elliott just grinded it out,” Cathedral coach Sean McGinley said. “He was down points but he didn’t panic and he battled back. He didn’t just do it in the finals, he grinded out wins in the quarterfinals and on Friday night.” Rodger’s teammate, senior Jordan Slivka sealed the team championship for the Irish in the next match. Slivka took on Portage’s No. 1-ranked Donnell Washington Jr. in the 160-pound championship. Washington beat Slivka 8-3 during the regular season and appeared on his way to beating him again in the final. Washington took Slivka down early in the match and then cut him (gave him a free escape). Washington continued his dominance for most of the first two periods. Then, in the final minute of the match, Slivka came alive. The Ohio University commit scored seven points in the final minute to win the match 12-7. That victory ensured no other team could catch the Irish in points. Slivka won his first individual state championship last season, and coincidentally, that victory also sealed the team title for the Irish. “This title felt better than last year’s,” Slivka said. “My goal wasn’t to be the best wrestler at Cathedral. I didn’t think I could ever accomplish that with guys like Blake Rypel and Lance Ellis. But no other Cathedral team has won two titles, and I wanted to be able to say I was the best team captain.” Slivka’s wrestling shirt has the word “clutch” on the back of it – one that coach McGinley feels is appropriate for the senior. “He comes through when people count him out,” McGinley said. “Washington is extremely, extremely talented and tough. He was on us that first period. We just wanted to stay close and ride it out. Slivka never lost faith and he pulled out that win.” Going into the final Cathedral looked to be in great shape to claim the team title. The Irish had four wrestling for weight-class championships and a small lead in the team standings. But things got a little dicey in the early goings. Irish freshman sensation Zeke Seltzer lost the 113 pound final to returning state champion, No. 1-ranked senior Jacob Moran of Portage 3-0. Then Cathedral’s Alex Mosconi fell to No. 1-ranked Matt Lee, 5-2 in the 145-pound final. When Avon’s Asa Garcia earned a pin over Roncalli’s Alec Viduya in the 132 pound final, suddenly things got interesting. Avon still had Carson Brewer to wrestle at 182 pounds. Brewer was the heavy favorite in the match, and if he pinned his opponent, Avon had a chance to take the team title. That’s when Rodgers and Slivka stepped up and won back-to-back matches to eliminate that possibility. “If we polled everyone they would have probably said we were an underdog in three of the matches and probably a push in the fourth,” McGinley said. “We knew the odds were against us, and we just needed someone who was going to step up and pull it through.” In all, Cathedral sent five wrestlers to the state tournament. Rodgers and Slivka won their weight classes. Seltzer and Mosconi placed second and Lukasz Walendzak finished 8th at 126.

  23. My son is a QB that has done camps in GA and CA with kids from all over the country. Every QB parent that I have ever talked to from California, and many from Texas, had held their kid back. I was even given a tutorial on how/when to do it. We elected to stay the course and keep him in his natural grade even though he is on the young side. It has put him at a disadvantage in some cases, but he'll be fine either way.

  24. Jesse definitely wanted to cut him. You clearly see Jesse look at coaches twice and then hear them say stay on top, he does not get a point. I later asked the coach and they confirmed that they did not want him to give up a point. I talked to Jesse as well and he wanted to keep working towards bonus points. Although Jesse has never wrestled Ty Mills, he did beat Patrick Noonan(Super32) who gave Ty his last high school loss(FloNationals).

  27. Do you want the Show Stopper Notorious side of things or you want TeamGarcia views ? Big Difference of Seriousness here Base . Since I have respect for you on here I’ll give TeamGarcia views . Very, very few don’t get that privilege. As most of you know I don’t talk about my kid on here . Since his high school career is over, made some IHSAA Wrestling History along the way, which ... I’m very, very proud of. I’ll talk about him and the wrestlers he’s faced in his short 4 years . I’ll go into Jesse vs. Asa . No they haven’t . Don’t really like do what (ifs) but only thing we can look common opponents and results. Jesse and Asa has wrestled together on many teams when they was younger . Jesse & Asa their ages & weights has always been keyed factors . Only speaking for my son here, Asa hasn’t cut weight in 2 years, he’s wrestled the states best, most noteable and arguably the Toughest weight (126) class in 2018 IHSAA State Finals ever. He's beaten the States Best year after year. He’s also not perfect wrestler either. He has 12 loses on his career. (10) to in State Wrestlers. (6) of those to the great Ty Mills. Mr. Mills help mold my kid into the wrestler he is today . I miss those battles they had . Some interesting facts of his loses he’s comeback and learn from. Their State accomplishments he’s overcome in his career (Indiana Only in State Finals) (6) Ty Mills- 2x Runner Up, 2x 3rd (2) Murphy- Runner Up (1) Cayden Rooks- 2x State Champ, Runner Up (1) Alex Viduya- State Champ, Runner Up, 4th ? Pretty good list of kids there, blessed my kid has wrestled them in his Stellar HS Career . Made him a better wrestler . —————————————— 2 out of State loses Jordan Decatur- 2x State Champ, National Ranked was at the time #1 and National creds is Amazing. Mick Burnett- National Ranked #15, National creds is Amazing. Do I think Jesse will be a 4x State Champ and go unbeaten . Yes, he made that 1st step in that direction . Congrats Champ, Great wrestler and will only get better the next 3 years . Only wrestler you can (what if’s) if the match happened in their HS Careers State Champion Hunter Watts - Mendez beat him 2x, results Idk off hand . Asa beat him all 4x over his career (maybe in season & post season or Summer Wrestling ? IHPO ?) I believe Pin, Tech Fall, Majors. Through their battles. Most recently in Atlantic City in summer 2018. Jesse Mendez is going to be a great one, he’s proved that . Hector & I know the formula to making our sons great wrestlers. Everyday, 24/7/365, Eat, Breathe, Sleep, Wrestle . My views Jesse vs. Asa Freshman (126) Jesse vs. Freshman (106) Asa .... hmmm weight will play a role in that . Skill looks the same . Both young with a lot of upswing . Same outcome . A Freshman State Champion Only few can say that at any weight. Compared- (106) Indianamat #8 Asa pins #2 Murphy. (126) Indianamat #1 Jesse 6-0 dec. #4 Rioux Freshman (126) Jesse vs. Senior (132) Asa ...Maybe it’s Man vs. Boy will show, much like Micic vs. Lee. Skill Asa- I think he has advantage & experience both in State & Nationally right now . Compared - (132) Indianamat #1 Asa pins #2 Viduya. (126) Indianamat #1 Jesse 6-0 dec. #4 Rioux Since we’ll never know . We all can speculate. Christopher Garcia

I like this story. He may or may not have had what sounds like very little previous experience in wrestling, but either way I dont find it any less impressive. Sure we want the neat movie script version where the nuance and detail are scrubbed away in the name of the story, but life is messy and rarely ever linear. If his career record equals his 2018-19 record, like what was reported during the intro, then that's good enough for me. And even if the two are ever so slightly different, count me still impressed.

Guys, I understand that technology has made it easier to stay home. I also realize people have to work or can’t afford to go. But, do you guys remember when we use to get angry at the fans who left during the 215-hwt finals. Yeah, our argument was they deserve the same respect as those in the other weights. Sometimes I feel we need to remember if we don’t support our sport, there won’t be one. I will be the first to admit I am guilty, so I am talking to myself as well. But guys we all know what that building is like when it is filled with fans, let’s keep making it a special event for those that make it. They can’t hear us cheer from the couch.

    Sportsmaniship

I would just like to give credit to the young men and coaches for carrying yourselves like champions win or lose this weekend. The overwhelming majority showed great sportsmanship and respect for their competitors no matter the match outcome. There are a lot of people that want to point out the negative, but I think it's important that we take a minute and point out the positive, as well. Way to represent your school, your wrestling program, your coaches, and your family! These young men have put a lot of time, sweat, and tears (and certainly a lot of blood) into this and when you don't get the outcome you desire, it is tough to control your emotions. These life lessons are far more important than any win or loss. Well done to the competitors and well done to the coaching staffs.

  45. Not even close, Ditka all the way! Before the heart-attack, a 'one-hundred to tree', after the attack, major decision, 'fifteen to tree', these guys couldn't escape Ditka's mustache, end of story.

  46. I guess it seams to me that Asa had the cradle locked up tight. So even if the ref would have waited it still would have resulted in a pin.

  47. I know lets complain about something that we have no control over that will solve everything! When you get put on your back you leave it into the refs hands. Don't let someone else dictate your success.

    Impact freshman

Chesterton falls under one of the top “Home Grown” programs as well. We had 2 Sophmore State Placers this year, 2 Sophmores that lost in the SS Ticket round (to eventual State Placers), 2 other soph’s and 1 Freshman SS qualifiers. We get to look forward to some very skilled “true” freshman that will join the team next year. All that have come up through the Duneland/Chesterton Wrestling Clubs. When our sophmore class this year was in 6th grade they finished runner-up at the ISWA Elementary Duals to Avon, knocking off Center Grove and Perry in the process. Needless to say, Chesterton should have a pretty good day at the Frosh/Soph Championships this weekend. Indiana Wrestling fans need to understand that next years Freshman class is filled with kids who were held back in Elementary or MS (sometimes more than once). In most cases these are the Top Ranked kids I have seen in ranking lists. I understand the motivation to “gray shirt/red shirt” your elite wrestler, but there is something a little more special when a wrestler knows if he’s really a Freshman when he comes to HS (whether or not it comes with success), and EVEN MORE SPECIAL when they are kids who have developed within your elementary programs from the start.
