  1. Coaching at Indy nationals today and noticed SQ Brac Hooper from Carmel was wrestling and won Indy nationals after wrestling Friday night. Just thought it was awesome to see a kid going right back to work after his season was cut shorter than I’m sure he hoped. I would bet there were some others I just recognized him from one of our kids wrestling him frequently in the offseason. Kid is tough as nails and I respect him a lot for competing just after state.

  4. I was saying the same thing in another post. I know the referees are out there doing their best to make the right call, and sometimes we miss the call. It sucks going back and watching video of yourself making a mistake after the fact. Therefore, why not help us out at the highest levels to ensure that the CORRECT call is made. I’m not trying to bash my fellow refs, but we can all admit, as refs, coaches, and athletes we make impulse decisions that we think to be 100% true, and turn out to be 100% wrong. I think replay is a GREAT idea! I want the ranks of our statewide referees to grow! If there is a questionable call as we speak, and it gets called wrong, we can’t take it back. With replay we can right the wrong.

  6. I know you can't go off of who your opponent beat, but the level of competitor that Sergio took down in the finals is ranked in the top 10 in the country. Not sure how Sergio would've stacked up against the IN competition this year, but I think he would've had the same result in both states. Very impressed with Sergio's mentality and technique throughout the entire IL state tournament. Being his coach last season, he has made a huge jump in a year and I can't wait to see how big of a jump he makes this off season! @Silence Dogood As far as my loss to Anthony Napules... All I can say is he stuck to a great game plan but I got him back 9-1 under the lights at Merrillville a couple weeks later ;). Losses are great motivational tools lol

  7. I've been wrestling around the same amount of time you have been coaching. I have seen wrestlers take an injury default and walk around fine five minutes later a few minutes later. I think if you could. By saying "hey you're injury defaulting you can't wrestle the rest of the day. Understand that." You're giving then mmm the option to choose. You're really allowing the wrestler to pick and choose what match they want to wrestle in with the ways the rules are now. "No I'm not good enough to wrestle and finish the match, but I can wrestle the next match." It softens the sports. A story I have is this, A year ago at Goshen Regionals first round one of the Gimson boys from Jimtown was winning his match by a wide margin. He got called for an illegal body slam, and this kid seemed hurt. I really respected what the East Noble coaches did... they knew their kid wouldn't be able to finish the match, but they started the time let it run one second and then stopped the time and then lost the match. The coaches knew that Gimson was going to place at state (he did). This coach got crap from the fans for sure, and the coaches I talked to throughout the day said they don't know that they would be able to do that. I know that this sort of argues for allowing injury defaults, but a majority of the coaches said they don't know if they could do that. Keeping that in the back of my mind, It's easy for coaches to say they'd do the right thing, but when it all comes down to it, a lot of then would have a hard time not taking their kid to semi-state, state, the finals etc. I think by giving the option to pick and choose which match they wrestle in gives them the idea that they get to go farther. Either way the rules are the rules, and I'm just for good hard wrestling. There can always be talk about ways to improve the sport. I'm here to learn.

    Officiating Question

Not saying you are right or wrong with the call, but the announcers are likely not your best source of verification. A none bias announcer usually are looking for the most exciting outcome on a last second call. So a close flurry/score at the end will almost always have the announcer pulling for the score, because it’s the more exciting outcome.

  12. By STEVE KRAHstvkrh905@gmail.com With a few exceptions, the cast of characters changed. But the plot was the same for Indianapolis Cathedral: Win Indiana’s high school wrestling team championship. “You always want to set your expectations high,” said Irish head coach Sean McGinley. “We thought going in we had a legitimate shot to be very successful. We had several goals and one of our goals was to win a state title. We were able to accomplish that.” Cathedral traveled across town to Bankers Life Fieldhouse and took the program’s third straight title and fourth overall Saturday, Feb. 22 at the 82nd annual IHSAA State Finals. “I’ve said it before, Friday night is always key,” said McGinley after the latest hoisting of the state trophy. “Our goal is not a state championship, it’s to get through Friday night. That’s our state championship adage. We got five out of eight which gave us a chance. We thought we were still in it. Saturday morning was the big round for us. We went five for five with several kids getting bonus points. Bonus points probably made the difference. We were getting them but(eventual runner-up) Crown Point and (third-place team Evansville) Mater Dei was also getting them.” Two of the eight State Finals qualifiers in the 2020 field were finalists on Cathedral’s 2019 state title-winning squad. “This year’s team was way different from last year,” said sophomore Zeke Seltzer, who won the 2020 crown at 120 pounds after placing second as a freshman at 113. “The only people we had returning to State was me and Elliot (Rogers). Logan (Bailey) was returning, but he didn’t make it last year.” “We had some guys step up for sure.” What was the difference between standing on the second step of the podium and the top for Seltzer? “I’ve been working for this for a whole year now,” said Seltzer. “It feels great to finally get it.” Rodgers was a state champion at 152 as a junior and finished third at 160 in 220 as a senior. Five of eight Irish wrestlers in the field earned state placement in 2020. Besides Seltzer and Rodgers, senior Holden Parsons (285 pounds) was a champion, senior Bailey (138) a runner-up and senior Tyler Wagner (170) a fourth placer. “For me it was my faith,” said Parsons. “God got me through it and made sure I wasn’t nervous and everything. My coaches were there for me in my corner. They knew what we needed to do. hey knew how to keep me calm.” Parsons talked about the team approach to the season. “We keep a constant pace,” said Parsons. “As it goes along, we start picking it up. During the postseason, we taper on and off. That just keeps our gas tanks up and our lungs burning so we’re ready to go 100 percent when it comes time to put the pedal to the metal.” “Everybody knew we had to get bonus points to keep up with Crown Point. They are a great team. They had great wrestlers. They are phenomenally-coached.” Senior Jacob Huffman (195), junior Johnny Parker (182) and sophomore Evan Dickey (106) competed Friday night but did not advance to Saturday. It was an extra-big weekend for the Seltzer family. Not only were there the team and individual championships, assistant Brian Seltzer (Zeke’s father) was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame the day after the State Finals. When the Irish reigned over the IHSAA in 2019, seniors Jordan Slivka (first at 160), Alex Mosconi (second at 145) and Lukasz Walendzak (eighth at 126) were there along with Rodgers and Seltzer. At the 2018 State Finals, Cathedral was represented by junior Slivka (first at 145), sophomore Rodgers (second at 152), senior Zach Melloh (second at 138), junior Alex Mosconi (second at 132), sophomore Bailey (third at 106), junior Walendzak (fourth at 120), senior Jacob Obst (seventh at 285)senior Jacob Obst (seventh at 285) and qualifiers senior Anthony Mosconi (160), sophomore Caleb Oliver (113) and freshman Andrew Wilson (126). ‘19 champs vs ‘20

Have to agree with @TeamGarcia this is a silly debate. Kids change so much year to year there’s no telling who would win. Like Joe vs Carson. They wrestle one time a couple years back. But if you look at both of them today they both have changed sooo much, no telling what would happen. Many others have wrestled also. Just know that these kids all should be proud and be grateful that their names will forever be in the record books and a part of these debates for years on end. I do know this.... there is bigger things in store for all these guys. I have been told by multiple champs.. “have no clue why I got so worked up over one tourney, it really is not a big deal.” Every college tourney you go too has multiple state champs in each bracket. Just about every kid at the D1 level is a state champ. These kids will continue to grow. This year Carson was in the same bracket as the last two number one kids that came out of high school in his class (who’s number one champs). He took the number one high schooler from two years ago to OT and lost and won the other tourney that last years number one was in. He is closing the gap between himself and the perceived best kids that have came out. Some of this years champs will do the same. Can’t wait to see what happens next! Again, silly debate, but a honor to continue to be acknowledged.

  15. You guys are probably still spent from the weekend, so I thought I would help a little with the results I could find for college: Friday Chad Red pins Mitch McKee (Minnesota) in 3:53. If Mitch McKee never sees another Indiana wrestler, that will probably be alright with him. Brayton Lee tech falls Christian Miller (Nebraska) 23-8 Mason Parris earns a 10-1 major over Jon Spaulding (Edinboro) Garrett Pepple loses in a 7-3 decision to Drew Marten (Central Mich) Cayden Rooks earns a 12-2 major over Wade Cummings (Chattanooga) Graham Rooks loses 12-8 to Tanner Smith (Chattanooga) Diego Lemly gets pinned by Hunter Fortner (Chattanooga) in 4;16 Nick Willham loses in a 14-4 major to Rodney Jones (Chattanooga) Rudy Streck loses a 6-3 decision to Grayson Walthall (Chattanooga) Sunday Nick Lee earns a 7-3 decision over Salvatore Profaci (American) Bonus Cross Over Content Could be college. Could be high school. Is both. Matt Lee enters the Mat Town II tournament as a high school senior and takes home third at 157. After beating Jonrocco Kazalas (Binghamton) 11-3 in the round of 16 he lost to red-shirt junior Elijah Cleary (Ohio State) 8-1. On the back side he had consecutive wins over Benny Baker (Finger Lakes) by a score of 16-3, Garrett Fisk (Maryland) 3-2, and Wyatt McCarthy (Rider) 4-3 before receiving third in a no contest victory of number 1 seed Jon Ross (Lock Haven).

  16. So I just looked over my school ratings. I had 28 schools give a rating. Out of those 28 schools, there were only 9 schools that I actually had any involvement with officiating either varsity or JV this season. If you don't know the official, then you shouldn't be giving them a rating.
    3 points
  17. Maybe give each school an allotted amount of tickets per section based on the number of wrestlers sent, maybe a lottery system on where they'll be each year then let the schools handle how many they need, then the die hard fans could have a couple of sections too?? Probably not a perfect idea but it's a start.

  21. We don't need to have replay review to get calls correct on the mat. what we need is consistency across the whole state on situations that each official may come across during the season and be better prepare to make those calls with the second officials support or opinion. The disconnect that I have seen the last couple of years is the inexperience of some officials that do not get to see enough of those crazy situations often, and not preparing or anticipating those situations... which could be illegal cutbacks, cut blocks, hands to the face, hip to hip early take downs, take downs not beyond reaction time. I believe we could truly improve the sport of wrestling by preparing thru having monthly calls statewide and discuss situations, topics, and how to call them consistent across the state. Those are my two sense. We have a tremendous amount of good officials across the state but I believe we could always improve. And it all starts with us.

  27. Congrats to all teams that participated in yesterday's event. It was very successful and was well ran. With that being said obviously congrats go to the Champions Center Grove and the runner up Jay County and 3rd place finisher Brownsburg as well. I want to recognize another team for what I feel sometimes gets over looked and goes without mentioning too often. At the end of the day the voice on the microphone announced that we would ask all teams to do their part in cleaning up their area. While myself and a couple other ISWA directors, board members and the president were collecting our equipment someone commented to the Perry Meridian team and coaches that we appreciated them cleaning up their area. They advised us they had already cleaned up their area and were cleaning up another area on their way out the door. Then after that was completed 2 kids from that team came to the ISWA President and myself and very politely & respectfully asked if there was anything else they could do to help us and thanked us for the day. Keep in mind these are MS kids showing the maturity and grace of what we would expect from most if not all of our HS age kids. Now this is where I should and would normally make a joke at the expense of @lewdwar but in this case I feel its best to just keep it classy and say thank you and you are doing a great job mentoring and leading those kids and it definitely is showing !!!! Respectfully, Jason Miller ISWA Kids Director

    THE BEST SEATS AT STATE

To add to this: At an assigned sporting event if you have an usher move someone due to them sitting in your seat you virtually never see that person again. However, at a group general admission event such as this even if you get an usher to have the group comply you are still surrounded by that group the whole rest of the event. And good luck getting up to use the concession/restroom and expecting your seat back without further hassle. I’m not sure what the answer is here, but the saving of multiple rows for people who aren’t even direct family member of t he finalists and then trying to intimidate someone looking to take just couple of those seat is uncalled for.

  33. Getting in and finding a seat is a whole problem within its own. They have 3000 people herded in there like cattle preventing them from going to find a seat. Another 3 to 5000 people standing on the opposite side of security waiting for them to release the 1st group so they can get through security. You surely don't wanna be in that 1st group with a child Or elderly because the child will just get Trampled. Friday when they released everybody to get through the 1st gate to only get stopped by ticket processing there was about a 5 year old boy who was ran over By 3 other people who wasn't even paying attention and not 1 of them stopped. It was a sick and sad situation. The idea of general seating is completely wrong for an event of this magnitude. It is extremely hard or near impossible for a family to find consecutive seats to sit to watch their Son or teammates. The idea of blocking off complete sections is wrong . The IHSAA/BLF needs to fix that issue. The IHSAA/BLF has tickets available on presale they should be able to sell those tickets as reserved seating and anything not sold could be general seating. This would stop the headache of finding a seat for a group of 5 people. If they sold reserved seating I/ we wouldnt have to argue with people that those 2 seat were for my wife and son who left to go through the bathroom. This would also stop some of the pushing and running to find seating. We have one of the greatest events in the country and yet the Process to get in and find a seat is a complete joke.

  37. How about 7 fans saving an entire section of seats. Then when you tell them that there’s no seat saving and sit, 3 guys approach you, stand around and one promptly sits next to you at the end of the aisle so your fiancé and child can’t sit down. Some words were had with those yahoos. You never want it to turn to that, but trying to intimidate a small family who stood in line to get decent seats...trash move.

  38. On behalf of Silas, myself and the rest of our family....we want to bring awareness to how accommodating the IHSAA was for us this weekend. All of us (including myself) at times get so caught up in what we feel they do wrong as it pertains to wrestling, we can easily become blinded to the multitude of right they do. Mr. Faulkens seen to it we had All-Access passes, and we’re allowed in our regular seats at our convenience. That type of gesture deserves a lot of credit. Because in what is always an extremely exhausting weekend.....factoring my health, my wife having to carry my breathing machine and our youngest daughter, without their philanthropic gesture, this weekend would not have been possible for me. I also want to commend Jacob Laplace and the Mishawaka Coaching staff. They had a tremendous gameplan of counter wrestling by the edge of mat to slow Silas’ relentless pace. We have been friends and thought a lot of Jacob and family going all the way back to 6th grade. He and Silas were always summer teammates with the Outlaws and forged a bond that continues to this day. Wrestling Family can be an equal bond as blood at times, because there’s such an understanding of the sacrifice involved for wrestlers, coaches and parents. We have a lot of genuine love for many of the Caveman faithful. Specifically the Sandefur’s, Fogarty’s, Walker’s and of course the Laplace family. I’m extremely proud of Jacob’s effort. He wrestled Silas as well as ANYONE has the last 2 yrs. But more importantly....I’m proud of Jacob as a young man of faith. Indiana Tech stole a diamond in the ruff recruit! But Coach Pompei will undoubtedly help grow his solid foundation to achieve tremendous things at the next level. -The Allred’s

  39. From someone who is part of the PAC in Southern IN I thought a big highlight was seeing more PAC athletes representing at State this year. South Spencer, Southridge, Tell City, North Posey, HH and new PAC school Boonville all had some kids travel to Indy to put in some work in on the mats. It’s great to see some new coaches come in and fix programs that previous ones completely killed. Look at HH for example- Coach Zollman’s second year as HH head coach and already has had 3 kids qualify at state, one getting 5th yesterday, I could be wrong but don’t think they’ve had anyone since around 2012. I watched the previous coach ruin that program, exciting to see it’s coming back and impressive how quickly. Great testament to his coaching and abilities. A guy you don’t want to coach against but happy he is helping represent your conference. Extremely smart pickup for them. NP, SS both with place winners. What a way to go out your final year with Stewart- congratulations & thank you Coach Packer. NP winning 1A Team State this year as well with Southridge and Tell City representing 2nd & 3rd as well. Exciting times for the PAC, happy to welcome Boonville & their stud to the conference as well! PAC wrestling on the ups! Proud to be a part of the PAC & continue to watch it grow!

    THE BEST SEATS AT STATE

Saving seats is getting out of hand. Many parents and grandparents just want to see their son wrestle. I ran into a mother last night that was chased from her seats cause she dared try to sit near the mat where her son was going to wrestle and another team’s fans had “reserved” three complete sections on level 2. She was very upset - this is out of control it shouldn’t be like that

  41. With the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, I think there were some grapplers this year who ended their campaigns as some of the best to never win a state championship. Graham Calhoun at 170lbs was a four-time qualifier and three-time medalist earning 7th place as a freshman, 5th as a sophomore, and 3rd as a senior on top of winning an NHSCA Sophomore national championship and being an All-American at the Super 32. Jacob LaPlace at 195lbs was a four-time qualifier and two-time medalist taking fourth as a freshman and was 45-0 going into the finals and likely would’ve won had he not wrestled Allred. Cooper Noehre and Isiah Levitz both at 160lbs. Both young men are two-time state qualifiers, placing both years at 152 and 160 as juniors and seniors. Noehre defeated Dickens last year in the semis and Levitz was undefeated with a win over Rodgers going into this year’s state semifinals. 160 was a meat grinder and regardless of who came out on top, these young men deserve to be mentioned as a state champion caliber. Other notable names of quality wrestlers who never won state championships Brandon James, Perry Meridian (2015) - 4× IHSAA All-State (3rd, 5th, 2nd, 3rd) - 170-8 record - 2011 USAW Preseason national champion at 113lbs - 4th at FloNationals 2014 at 120lbs (Defeated Chad Red; only Indiana wrestler to defeat Red in HS) - 6th at 2012 USAW Cadet Freestyle Nationals at 120lbs - 8th at 2011 USAW Cadet Freestyle Nationals at 112lbs Kirk Johnson, Perry Meridian (2012) - 3× IHSAA All-State (4th, 4th, 3rd) - 7th at USAW Junior Greco-Roman Nationals at 160lbs (Defeated Isaiah Martinez by technical superiority) - 7th at 2012 FloNationals at 160lbs Vinny Corsaro, Cathedral (2014) - 4× IHSAA All-State (6th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd) - 5th at 2013 FloNationals at 152lbs Tristen Tonte, Warren Central (2017) - 3× IHSAA State Runner-Up at 195lbs (2015-17) - 2× NHSCA All-American - 4× AAU Scholastic Duals All-American (14-1 in 2016) Gunnar Larson, Avon (2017) Steven Lawrence, Portage (2016) Ben Harvey, Cathedral (2015) Tyler Fleener, Center Grove (2014) Fletcher Miller, Kokomo (2014) Connor Tolley, Franklin Community (2014) Brenden Campbell, New Castle (2012) Joshua Kieffer, Roncalli (2011) Jacob Tonte, Perry Meridian (2010)

I'm rooting for LoBo to advance and take on 1 of his familiar foes in either Kervin or Fulks! Hall vs Boe will be a war and we know the other 2 guys are gonna go all out to get under the lights! Best of luck to everybody and feel free to add past situations where a SS was this dominant in a particular weight!

  43. To all the people saying you shouldn't be able to wrestle after defaulting please answer this: If a wrestler is in a tight match and is injured due to an illegal move, why should he feel it necessary to continue wrestling at a disadvantage? Why should he feel he can't try to wrestle his next match at a disadvantage? I have coached for almost 20 years, and have never won a match defaulting. I have had a kid, getting drilled, get injured by a slam a few times and just gave the win to the other guy. I know you are going to say that some coaches or wrestlers take advantage of the situation just for a W. I just don't think you can make a rule that could possibly keep a kid from participating after an illegal move.

  44. I believe it would be a great match, but I’m a fan of Viduya’ style. Matt’s heavy hands could be the difference though.

  47. Not sure about the other write in candidates. Avon brings in 2019 middle school placer David Marcum (contenders trained). Multi time middle school placer Luke Rioux (second of 5 brothers). Caden Brewer (Brewer 2.0). And gets back Blaze Garcia (2019 state qualifier and brother of a 3 timer). Add that to a solid team that only graduated three seniors, and that will be a tough team (with a very solid team score at state). Hard to argue to not vote Avon in. Just saying.
