  4. 2018 Tyce Freije vs Alex Mosconi 2020 Tyce Freije vs Bryer Hall Unfortunately our guy came out on the losing end of those wars. Mosconi was state runner up in 2018, Freije was sidelined the majority of the regular season due to injury that season and then went ahead and wrestled the postseason even though his hand needed surgically repaired. Hall was state runner up in 2020. Freije lost an overtime bout to Kervin at EMD Holiday Classic, and Kervin would go on to win state title over Hall in that exciting match. Tyce won the NC Semi-State at 120 in 2017 and went on to finish 8th in the state, only state qualifying freshman in the weight class. Tyce again won the semi-state in 2019 and went on to finish 4th at state at 138. Bias, but if we were one of the 49 states that has wrestlebacks, then Freije would have likely been a 4x state medalist. That’s how it goes though. It’s a tough tournament, you have to win your matches.

  5. Bradbury Portage vs Birge Frankfort Birge was the returning state Champ, Bradbury was going to War with Alex Ramos every week. Bradbury lost to Ramos beat him for a regional title, setting up the match. Bradbury got the W, then went on to continue his rivalry to Ramos losing to him Under the lights.

  6. I have added up the points of about one team per day this week, so without @maligned's work, I'd find out in 2022 who is in Team State for 2021.

  8. Semi-State is a tough week. It's where many dreams are realized and others are crushed. Every year, we see quality matches take place in the ticket round that would've been better suited the next weekend at Bankers Life, but unfortunately in our system, we only get to see them once. What are some of the best ticket matches you have ever seen? Off the top of my head 2015 #5 Mason Parris (Lawrenceburg) vs. #12 Ben Stewart (Cathedral) - A brawl for the ages that saw Mason Parris was not to be played with. The freshman came out swinging and beat Stewart 3-1. 2016 #4 Zach Melloh (Cathedral) vs. #13 D.J. Brookbank (Perry Meridian) - Fireworks... First word that comes to mind when I think about this match. Melloh was a returning state medalist up from 126 and had beaten Brookbank in two prior meetings, including a senior night thriller at Perry Meridian, and was heavily favored in their third match-up. Brookbank, however, became a man possessed and put Melloh to his back in the opening moments of the match and upended him 13-11 to punch his ticket to state in his first trip to New Castle as a senior. 2020 Riley Rust (Center Grove) vs. Justice Cash (Bloomington North) - An emotional match-up that saw the Center Grove stud beat probably one of the best to never qualify for state.

  14. No shame in that. Rosbottom and Jankowski were national caliber and Minton was just a fearless animal that tossed everyone to their backs (including Rosbottom in that regional match). There were some other nice names at 145 at state that year, but Rosbottom and Minton steamrolled them into the final. Still a real shame to this day the state runner-up Jankowski couldn't be in that mix on the big stage.

  15. It was 7-5. I had to go back and look it up. I can't forget Ferguson's 1st Round match at State against Jeremiah Reitz. Reitz was coming off a State Title and Ferguson was out most of the season until the tournament. Ferguson started strong and was up 13-2 after the 2nd period, but ran out of gas in the 3rd. Reitz outscored him 11-4 in the 3rd period as Ferguson's only points came on allowed escapes. Final score Ferguson wins 17-13. One of the best Friday night matches I can recall.

  29. Frank DeBusk put a stake in the heart of the Mater Dei nation. The week before the match, Mike Goebel said, "I have heard that Hobart can hurt you in a street fight." Many MD fans will tell you this was their greatest comeback. Wrong! In 1965, the 'Cats were down 21-0 against Franklin Central. MD posted seven straight wins to close out the match a 31-21 victor.

  32. Data is up to date. I'm working on updated leaderboards now, but I'm getting injury info put into some of the scores. I'll hopefully have those posted this afternoon still. Also...classification is now FINAL. The lists of teams posted after sectional are how they will stay. (The IHSAA confirmed that they won't post new data--if at all--until several weeks from now. Because of how the Department of Education is collecting the data in the covid environment, there's a significant chance the IHSAA will continue to use old data for this classification cycle. Either way--it will be past our cutoff for when we need to start inviting teams and getting commitments for Team State. Again..the only changes from last year are Western Boone and Southridge dropping into 1A from 2A.)

  38. Three days before the semi state, Mike Goebel was on pins and needles. “I can't even talk about it," said Goebel. "I've been a nervous wreck ever since I saw the pairings. They should be the ones wrestling for the State Title, but this means a great wrestler will be denied a trip to State." Goebel’s anxiety was due to the semi state ticket round match looming between Dan Jankowski and Jeffersonville’s returning State Champion, Robert Rosbottom. How in the world did it come to this? Rosbottom (37-1), lost in the New Albany Regional final to Steve Minton of New Albany. It was quite an upset as Rosbottom had defeated Minton in three previous encounters. "They'd had two close matches and one blowout," said Goebel. "But this time Minton got the takedown and back points and beat Rosbottom, 8-1." Goebel’s anxiety would soon give way to frustration, disappointment and anger. In the ticket round match, Rosbottom drew first blood, scoring a takedown in the first period. Rosbottom was content to ride the balance of the period, never coming off of Jankowski’s hips. He was warned for stalling. Jankowski escaped in the second period. Shot after shot was blocked by Rosbottom, no offensive attempts being made. Wildcats fans were agitated. A growing crescendo of grumbling emanated from the Red and Gold. Jankowski cut Rossbottom in the third period. Working from a 3-1 deficit, Jankowski could tie the match from his feet. Jankowski immediately attacked. Rossbottom was finally called by referee Jim Beeson for stalling with about a minute left to make it 3-2. Jankowski continued a non-stop attack while Rossbottom continued to back up and block. In spite of Goebel’s protestations harmonizing with an angry and howling Mater Dei throng, Beeson would not call another stalling penalty to force overtime. Suffering one of the bitterest defeats in Mater Dei’s wrestling history, Dan Jankowski lost, 3-2. In the third period, Jankowski took a staggering 18 shots compared to Rosbottom’s two. In the loss, Jankowski was gracious. “Rossbottom wrestled a smart match,” he said. “I guess he did what he thought he would have to do to beat me. I just wish there would have been more action.” Mike Goebel took the loss and the events of the day pretty hard. "When you look at taking six to State, that's good, but when you consider that Mater Dei didn't have a (semi state) champion for the first time in I can't remember when, it's tough. Sometimes people take things for granted. They tend to forget how tough it is at this level."

  42. Matt Jaggers, New Castle vs Russel Smiley, Warren Central. Both returning SQ, Smiley had placed and was a returning SS champ. FCfighter might correct me but I believe Smiley was up 2-1 and jaggers hit a reversal or TD plus 2 NF and won 5-2, went on to win SS and take 5th.

  47. Yes it's him! He does show the kids stuff and he's still in great shape.. Couldn't ask for a better AD especially for wrestling... He already has seen to it the team is getting resources and not putting the team on the back burner to basketball, our school is really really big into basketball

  50. To build a little upon @IndianaWrestlingGuy's post, Culver is a beautiful college like campus. Half of the buildings bear a Steinbrenner name..aka the Yankees owner. If you are ever in the area go check out the campus as it is usually fairly open. The education, obviously at $55,000 a year, is top notch and very hard to match not only in Indiana, but the country. Their IHSAA sports come and go in waves depending upon recruiting students, yes I said recruiting. Private and parochial schools must recruit students or they will shut their doors. If the travel rules in Indiana change I could see it benefiting a school like Culver immensely has they have the money and backing to support travel throughout the country. If you look at many of the top ranked high school wrestling teams they are private or parochial schools, thus they get kids from all over. Blair and Wyoming Seminary are just as expensive as Culver. Culver could very well compete at their level if the travel rules change or if they would go to National Preps(not sure if they could technically).
