  1. I know I'll get pelted with empties from any poster that starts with "SW" and I respect Mr. Goebel (sic) immensely, but maybe it's time to put a third guy on the show? And might I recommend @ontherise219 for that position? Now hear me out.... How many times last night did he mention "I'm not familiar with that wrestler..." or "IndianaMat ranks him...". Well, the actual ranker does some media stuff for the actual sight that does the rankings oft quoted, and since he does the rankings pretty well it appears, he does seem to know a bit about most/all the wrestlers and not just the ones at the E'ville SS. Again, nothing personal, and as far as the actual call of the finals matches goes I think Mr. Goebel is great and knows his stuff and adds insight, but for a parings show I'd just like to hear a bit more insight/matchups etc and think OTR could provide that. Of course the hour and fifteen minute time frame might be tough but he wouldn't have @Y2CJ41 to throw him off topic. Like I said, unpopular opinion.. but outside of the ESS dudes there just didn't seem to be much insight or info put out there except "that should be a good quarter bracket". There...I said it. I'll delete my acct now.

  2. We don't need another week of the state series. A simple rule change that during the state tournament if you injury default you are not allowed to wrestle the rest of the day would suffice.

  3. My issue is with the other dude (Greg Rakestraw). He fills in on some sports talk radio shows down here in Indy. Just don't enjoy listening to him. He just rambles. Clearly does not know a lot about wrestling. Plus.... he doesn't know the difference between Peanut Butter and Jelly and Ham sandwiches. Smh

I think it would be better if @Wrestling Scholar would throw tacos into the crowd. People LOVE tacos.

  6. Not true... @FCFIGHTER170 is the official collection agent / enforcer for TheCounty. He has stood behind multiple state champs of late. He’s a good dude that actually is working with kids to try to make them better. Not just a keyboard warrior like others. Just likes to pump his guys up. I know that we are having fun. But... I will stick up for guys who give of themselves and actually help kids. #BetterHaveMyNanas

  11. I currently live in Indiana but lived most of my life in Ohio. I wrestled in Ohio and attended the state wrestling tournament there for 20 consecutive years. This year, I attended the IHSAA post season Semi State at New Castle for the first time ever. Was my first post season event ever attended for Indiana High School Wrestling. My first experience was almost entirely positive. I can tell you the perception in Ohio is that Indiana Wrestling is not as competitive. I personally had this belief as well. I do not anymore. I don’t know if New Castle is that much more competitive from the other Semi-State’s but the quality of wrestling there was excellent. I would go as far as saying there were kids who did not make it out that I could see being state qualifiers in Ohio. My only grip, which most of you could probably guess, was the qualification process. SMH. Why? I just can’t wrap my head around the thought process that went into decided that you need to make the semi finals and your in. This does not ensure the best four getting out. Having double elimination also does not ensure the “best” 4 getting out but it does allow tough quarter final draws to have a second chance. The state’s response could be to not lose and your okay. I get it, but for a lot of kids their goals are not to be a state champ. Maybe it’s to make it state or place in state. I am curious how many other states do it like this? My favorite round in all of Ohio’s post season wrestling is District (their semi-state) Conso-Semi’s. I wish Indiana would revisit this, but I also know that others have probably voiced their opinions over the years and here we are still the same. Also, New Castle is an awesome venue!

  13. Lots of talk about other weight classes...not much about 160. I am betting this to be the match of the night...Levitz vs. Dickens. Only common opponent was Rodgers. Both have beat him. Levitz and Dickens haven't been "tested" yet. Levitz has a lot to prove that small school wrestlers can come out on top, as well as being Prairie Heights first individual state champ. Dickens has been #1 all year but not tested by anyone from Indiana other than Purdy. I am.pulling for Levitz to win it all! Go Panther Pride Wrestling!

  14. First off I was behind him with my whole arm around his back and he had 1 hand on the ground for a moment which is 2. Even tho he had his arm around my head I was still behind him with control. Second off even if I didn't get that takedown. I still would have won because I road him out the whole 3rd period.

  16. I would like to apologize as we have helped make it easy to know everything about Indiana wrestling. Maybe we should require Rakestraw to listen to Gorilla Radio.

I worked the New Castle Semi-State.....Most of the coaches had good questions, which I probably changed 3 or 4 of my calls after consulting my assistant. We cant always see everything, so I love to have the extra set of eyes. Some officials dont want it unfortunately .

Actually, in a pinning situation, the second official should not be watching for a pin at all. His job is to watch the line if close to OB, or the top of the action to look for blood, illegal holds, eye gouging, choking, any penalties, and then let the #1 official know. The best officials leave egos out of it and worry about getting the call right. In the end, that's why there are two of them out there. I had a call overturned Saturday. After the match I thanked the #1 official, not for changing the call, but for being willing to listen to me first, then go and talk with the other official who had a better angle. That's how it should work. Get the call right, no matter what.

  19. True, people love tacos, including the Scholar. The problem is the Scholar already has a lot of unpaid taco debt already. But im sending the idea to my engineering department on how to make a taco launcher. Even though a great idea, tacos can be messy and Im visualizing the flying tacos landing in the stands creating an explosion of beef, shredded cheese, taco sauce and taco shells. I could see this landing on a Perry Meridian Fan with a clean brand new powder blue T Shirt and being upset with a taco stain. What if it a guy the guy ruined a Merrillville Purple sweat shirt. The scholar would be in trouble. I think a low probability I could get the written consent of the Bankers Life Security department or the consent of the Marion County food board. But the idea of a Gorilla in a singlet like the coach on Vision Quest had on with the Indianamat logo it is genius. You're marketing should be thanking Luv2Compete and the Scholar. I say you go all out and get the Gorilla that does flips and dunks basketballs. You could make t-shirts with your advertisers on it and really market the heck out of this. You're welcome Joe.

  20. I was at the Al Smith and I was the official most of the Day on Mat one. Name is Leo Mercado, and I truly work really hard to make sure I stay consistent with the rules of our sport and apply them like the rulebook states to apply them. I typically don't like to throw jabs at anyone and I hope that this doesn't come out as a jab to anyone or anything; but I truly work hard to make sure my signals, mechanics, interpretations, and rules applications of the sport are delivered clearly and consistent throughout the whole match in the whole entire arena, so that even the deaf man at the nosebleed seats can understand my call. If you don't want me calling a "bad" match for your kid, scratch me like any other coach does in the our state because I apply the rules the way they should be applied.

  21. Throughout the history of the state finals the number of state placers has grown from four to six and finally to eight in 1992. With the addition of the 7th and 8th place finishers came the Friday night win or go home match for all the competitors. Throughout the years we have seen amazing matches and crazy upsets on Friday night. After some thought we wanted to know which coach had the best winning percentage on Friday night. We compiled all the data from 1992 until 2019 and came up with the following information. Please note that included in these statistics are qualifiers that did not end up participating at state due to injury. This mildly affects a coach’s percentage as it is a rare occurrence an athlete does not participate on Friday night. 22. Thanks @UncleJimmy that would be awesome! Like I am sure y2 would tell you the Ihsaa would need a bigger time slot for all of the different directions the show would go and the half hour of fanboying I would be doing with coach Goebel. I love that the show uses the rankings as a base I think it would be really cool if they had the rank on the bracket so everyone can see where the ranked matches up are and i think it would help greg. Overall I love the show and think it is an amazing idea! I know some programs were doing watch shows for the release which is awesome too. I’ll try to keep my Sunday after semi state open in case they call. thanks guys I appreciate all of you! Also o believe we are doing half the bracket tonight on gorilla radio

  23. Overall Rankings always provide a great insight to the best of the best in the state. Arguments always ensue on who is the best and who should be ranked. Over the years our rankings have proven to be the best out there. On top of that our rankings are locked before the first whistle at sectional and they do not take into account the semi-state draws. This year only 9 wrestlers that advanced to state were not in our state or semi-state rankings. We also set a new record for most state ranked wrestlers advancing to state with 180 or just over 80%! Thanks to our rankings gurus Mike Reiser, Caleb Spires, Howard Cottey, and Dustin Bentz for another great season. Do not forget to download the IndianaMat brackets with rankings attached so it is easier to follow the state finals. 25. Alrad? C'mon guys for a kid this special mind your spelling. It's Allred. Cole Solomey vs Jett Boots at 120 should be a heckuva match. Solomey has had a great year having stayed under the radar being in the same sectional with a pair of proven seniors in Bettich and Diaz. Now he may be on the podium.

  27. Stevan Micic will go for a bronze medal at the Euro's today at noon US Eastern time, 6pm local time in Italy. He lost a round of 16 match yesterday to multiple time world medalist Atli of Turkey, 7-5. He then easily worked through the repechage this morning to advance to the bronze medal match against an Armenian who lost 6-3 to Atli. Micic traded 1-point matches with Atli last year, so he's a familiar opponent. This time, Atli hit a duck to get behind and then launched him for 4 in the first few seconds of the match. From there, he was mostly on his horse and Stevan was never really in a spot to put the match in great question. I don't believe Micic has ever faced the Armenian Jaburyan. He's been around and had some decent results, but he's 35 and this is the first time he's been Armenia's rep at a big event for the last couple years. He's had a couple nice wins in the tournament and fought hard against Atli, but Stevan should be favored to get the win in what should be a relatively tight match.

  28. Good stuff. One could make a case that the absolute number is at least as important as the percentage.

This is total disrespect and not needed. You sir are a classless individual and clearly I say this without knowing who you are because you don't sign your posts. I hope to hell you are not someone I know on a personal level because I think this kind of a statement towards a kid is just un-called for and you should re-think your posts in the future.

  33. Yea, we could use the Indianamat Gorilla throwing T-shirts. That's the best idea I've heard all day. Joe has to even has to like this idea. Great advertising opportunity. And some of these shirts can be Indianamat T-shirts. If Joe, doesn't have the Gorilla suit, time to invest in one. This seriously is a good idea.

I thought MD got good if not great draws in all classes except 182. That doesn't mean they will win every match, but it is set p fairly for all of them with the possible exception of Freeman at 120. Bettich in the Quarterfinal and Seltzer in the Semi if he gets past Bettich. I don't think anyone is sleeping on him or anyone else. Drawing Driver was the best possible draw for Ross because if he wins, it also prevented him from seeing Cottey on Saturday morning. Another example is Blake Boarman got a great draw with Hayden Shepherd. Not so much because Shepherd isn't good, but because it avoided a potential first round match with Logan Bailey and put Bailey and Drake Campbell, they only two he has lost to this year, on the opposite side of the bracket. The key is no matter what draw you get, you still gotta go out and win,

  38. What injury? Not being mean, but Hardcastle won the semi state after his injury...Crappy situation...as boomer implied earlier...wrestle backs could help this...both are tough kids...we don't know who would've won...just sucks to see a career end like that. I know that Coach Landis does a fantastic job with SW and I was rooting for him

  39. But adding more wrestlers to the state finals would water it down. We don't want a watered down state finals event.

  41. Watts loses to Jordan Decatur in the finals. They dueled penn state last night and came and won this today. Carson beats a solid Russian in the finals 14-3 to win his 4th open of the season. Had a runner up finish this year also. Putting together a very solid redshirt campaign. #ProudDad

  46. Steve,. I moved her about 12 years ago. I lived 4 years in Ohio and my older son wrestled in Ohio out of the Sandusky area. I attended a few State tournaments at OSU. Really fun time and great environment.. Also wrestled in Kansas and Missouri. I've seen a lot of state tournaments. When I moved to Indiana, I also said WTF, the state qualification process is bizarre. Being hear 12 years, I still ponder a lot on why they do it and realize they will never change. Here's my conclusions on why Indiana does it. 1. The Indiana State qualifying system has the "Hoosier Syndrome" DNA built into it. See the movie Hoosiers. The whole point is belief is one class and one champion. If you have one champion, and If you lose early in a qualifying round then were not the best and continuing to contend for placement is irrelevant and waste of time. 2. At some point in time, the Indiana legislature dictated to the IHSAA that it is not ok to miss school for sports participation. As you notice the whole very long state series takes place on weekends. With a one class state system, and to have full wrestle backs, you would to extend the tournament to weekdays requiring the missing of missinv of school which is strongly against IHSAA philosophy. 3. Basketball dominates Indiana and to some degree football. The IHSAA executive board who could make changes to the qualification format is made up of athletic directors from Indiana High Scools. Most of these board members have Basketball backgrounds and some football. I'm not aware of any former wrestling coaches. These sports do not have the equivalent of wrestle backs and have also have the one loss you're done philosophy ingrained into their beliefs. They do not believe in double elimination (strong bias at the IHSAA) and are offended that wrestling requests it. Our wrestling committee who presents rule changes was directed to not use the term wrestle backs when requesting policy change. Wrestle backs even though an integral part of wrestling is a dirty word at the IHSAA. 4. The Legacy of sudden death and no wrestle backs is ingrained into the wrestling community in Indiana. A majority of people would love to see wrestle backs, but a large minority of people love the Indiana tradition. When they participated, they had to deal with the unfairness of the luck of the draw. Why should younger kids get the benefit of dealing with wrestle backs. 5. The randomness of sudden death is entertaining. People love the ticket round and seeing two highly ranked kids meet knowing somebody is going home unfairly. It creates drama. I've made the same argument you did that the consolation semi final ticket round is just as exciting to no avail. If you thought the semi state quarter finals were unfair. Wait till the state tournament. You have kids to through the gauntlet of qualifying for the state tournament. Then half of the kids lose and are done. Although entertaining, I get a dirty feeling of unfairness. Why does Indiana want to bring the best talent in the state for a showcase, but try to shorten it for the least of among of wrestling they can get. It never made sense to me. Anyway I'm personally biased as my son's lost in one of those close ticket round matches at semi state and wish he had the benefit of a wrestleback. It just isn't right if you're a traditional wrestling can.
