  3. In all fairness....I think Silas has solidified himself as a pretty special talent regardless of school size. So with all do respect, I genuinely feel to draw a question about why aren’t more 1A or 2A wrestlers like him, is a bit unfair. Almost as unfair as if I asked why aren’t more 4A wrestlers like him. Admittedly....I certainly don’t have the answers regarding pros/cons of class wrestling. I think there’s evidence of beneficial dynamics on both sides. The class question is always intriguing to me because comparisons are frequently made to other power states whose classed (PA, Ill, IA, OH, etc). But I question these comparisons as it pertains to the benefits of classing Indiana. In other words....if those states weren’t classed, would they not be as strong? I personally feel their strengths are elsewhere apart from the classification system. Specifically....their head start in club training, and especially collegiate RTC opportunities. Most notably in PA. In PA alone there are 11 D1 wrestling programs, 8 D2, and 14 D3. This equates to NEVER having to drive too far down the road to get your butt kicked for 2hrs. And in my experience, that dynamic coupled with an athletes desire to close the gap....is the biggest catalyst in the evolving of more nationally elite kids. And unfortunately....class or no class, at this point.....only a handful of young athletes are driven enough to embrace a “Get beat up, or get better” mentality. In fact, classing things in hopes to raise 1A numbers, kinda caters to many of those athletes who are hesitant to compete because of that fear. If numbers is the only goal, then classing definitely benefits. But I’m confident that strictly more bodies on the mat isn’t the zeal motivating class wrestling advocates. I’m fully aware that more participation will undoubtedly eventually mold some freak athlete whose a football player at the small school level into a great wrestler. But what about the “in-betweens”. The guys who literally just lack the drive, and want the accolades without the effort. That’s one of my biggest issues with classing it here. And full transparency......I’m definitely bias by what I’ve personally experienced at the small school level, in contrast to having graduated and competed athletically myself at Muncie Central. The Silas scenario is 100% the embodiment of hard work and extreme levels of self motivation. For 2 years, his daily partner was a 160lb’er.....and a true 170 wrestling up to benefit our team. So having a no excuse mentality.....we had to find partners, supplental/paid clinicians for live wrestling, stance and motion in live match format for 5 periods, old school Rocky like strength training, and literally driving anywhere & everywhere in the off-season....to ensure he’d taste humility and have to overcome a peak to close a gap. Ultimately....it’s simply been a mantra of “Nobody will outwork me”. That alone excited the recruiters. Silas’ ceiling hasn’t even been close to established. He’s never had regular elite partners to push him. He’s a product of self-push, and an overwhelming desire to succeed. In fact, the argument could made.....that Silas is the example of what’s possible at the 1A level. When you simply don’t make excuses about school size, strength of schedule, partners, etc. And just literally make it a lifestyle. Daily telling yourself....I’m going to be better today than I was yesterday. Again....I don’t have all the answers. And I respect the opinion of those whose researched the benefits. I’m just simply sharing what I know to be truth in the lives of my son Silas, and his overzealous dad who fell in love with sport a mere 6 yrs ago. That said......will classing create more elite athletes? I can’t buy in. But will it raise numbers and help even more young men become better men? I’m sold on that.

    Better than Indiana

I think we are at 6. Many of the top dual teams from elementary to HS are littered with Indiana kids. If we ever put our best on 1 team it would be scary. Bryan Bailey was probably the closet to accomplishing that goal. Check out his facebook, where everyone has been posting their memories with his teams. He has coached just about every stud in the state. We just need to get rid of travel restriction and other states will start getting exposed to some of our depth. Our top guys already travel, but getting rid of travel restriction will help some of our other talented wrestlers get exposure that can't or don't travel during the summer.

  5. It looks like our current system is quite equitable. 1A has 11.16% of Indiana Students in (91 schools) and earns 9.8% of the medals and 9.8% of the qualifiers. (minimal under-performing) 2A has 22.13% of Indiana Students in (91 schools) and earns 21.4% of the medals and 23.7% of the qualifiers. (performing) 3A has 29.27% of Indiana Students in (60 schools) and earns 23.2% of the medals and 25.4% of the qualifiers. (under-performing) 4A has 31.42% of Indiana Students in (35 schools) and earns 45.5% of the medals and 41.1% of the qualifiers. (Over-performing) 4A over-represents itself by a bit. The other subdivisions are within a pretty close margin of their school population predicting their qualifiers and placers. I get frustrated by these talks because I think of students earning medals, and I don't think of schools as earning medals. I feel like a small group of students should earn a small group of medals. I feel like big groups of students should earn big groups of medals. The opportunities to qualify and place at state are pretty equal for students in any type of school based on these numbers. If we analyzed dual meet success between schools, I think you would find that the bigger schools have much more success, as they have more students to field their teams, so their teams are better; thus, a team separation of classes makes much more sense than an individual separation of a tournament that seems to give equitable opportunities.

    Most Dominant

I just came to post this and you beat me to it. But you forgot one.... Kyle Hatch at #7 in DIII For those that don't want to read the article, it's the NCAA's Most Dominant List based on average team points scored per match. Only Mark Hall leads Nick Lee. Also note the obvious that Nick and Mason are this dominant in the best conference in the country against highly ranked wrestlers. And for what it's worth, Kyle Hatch's 4.94 points at #7 is higher than Mark Hall's DI leading 4.85. Not bad representation for the Hoosier State.

  17. Slivka is one of the best big match wrestlers in Indiana history. He had wins over multiple top ranked high schoolers last year. And has beaten more of those guys this year. He just gets the job done. Slivka is a hammer on top and underrated on his feet. I’m unaware of any national ranked kids that Dickens has beat. Slivka has beaten a handful. With that said, that’s the reason that Slivka gets my nod. I’m using logic and facts. EMD fans are pumped for their guy. As they should be. Again, silly debate but a fun one. Obviously the Dickens win is fresh and 90 percent of EMD fans will give Dickens the nod. It is what it is. With all of that said, most posters on here have never won a title and will never have family member win a title. They will never know the joy or help put the work in to win a title. So.. when you get on here and say a KID will smoke another KID, it is kinda insulting to a family that actually put in the work, took the kid to privates, took the kid to academy, took the kid all over the USA, the money that was spent, the sleep that was missed, the days of work missed, the tudors that were payed for, getting up at 5:00am to help the kid work out and meal prep, the “vacation” time that was spent in the middle of Iowa. So before you go off running your mouth behind your anonymous screen name, be considerate of what people went through and know that they are prideful. Make your logical picks or homer picks, but you need to be respectful of other people’s sacrifices. Calm down cowboys. Just my two cents.

  21. What's Cathedral wrestling's secret? 'Best coaching staff in the state of Indiana' BRIAN HARMON | SPECIAL FOR INDYSTAR 1:38 p.m. EST Feb. 23, 2020 INDIANAPOLIS – Keeping a keen eye on a third-place match at the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals from one of two designated coaching chairs per team on the mat’s periphery, Cathedral coach Jeff Brown shouts encouragement to senior Tyler Wagner. During a break in the action, fellow Irish coach Michael Venezia pats Wagner on the shoulder and provides additional advice. Brown is not the Cathedral head coach. Neither is Venezia. Sean McGinley believes in delegation — and in his assistant coaches. “I have a lot of trust with my assistants,” said McGinley, a 1988 Cathedral graduate in his 20th season as his alma mater’s wrestling coach. “These coaches work so hard with these kids and they’ve got relationships with them, and they wrestle with them everyday. And I want to put that best person out there that knows that wrestler.“ It’s a philosophy that works. With McGinley often viewing matches several dozen feet from the action, Cathedral captured its third-straight team championship and fourth since 2014 on Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Irish scored two individual titles: Zeke Seltzer at 120 pounds and Holden Parsons at 285 pounds. Ultimately, it was depth that propelled the Irish to the banner with 102 points, edging Crown Point (93.5). Cathedral’s Logan Bailey (138 pounds) was runner-up; Elliott Rodgers (160 pounds) grabbed third place; and Wagner (170 pounds) took fourth place. Each state finisher, along with the remaining Irish standouts who had a part in sectional, regional and semistate team crowns leading up to Saturday, has relied on a variety of assistant coaches. Whether it's Brown, Venezia, Anthony Bill, Mo Gunn, Brian Seltzer or Brandon Wright, each Cathedral grappler has tapped into a variety of knowledge. “One thing I’m proud to say is that my coaches aren’t only my coaches, but also my friends,” Rodgers said. “One of my biggest supporters is coach Bill. He’s helped me ever since my freshman year. They all have, but he has especially worked with me. To have him sit in my corner makes me feel really good because we’ve worked on things and he knows how I wrestle.” The staff has a wealth of experience, not the least of which includes Brian Seltzer’s long tenure as head coach at Elkhart Memorial and Lawrence North through 2016. Admittedly biased, Zeke Seltzer (Brian’s son) believes, “Our coaching staff is the best coaching staff in the state of Indiana, by far.” The collective coaching effort has raised the Cathedral wrestling program to the lofty athletic heights normally associated with the school, which has captured multiple football, volleyball and other IHSAA team state titles. Prior to 2014, the Irish had not won a wrestling team championship. Under McGinley’s tenure, 108 wrestlers have qualified for the state finals, with 83 of the grapplers going on to place in the top eight, according to IndianaMat.com. “Whether it’s me or coach Brown or coach Seltzer, I want to give the kid the opportunity to succeed,” McGinley said. “It’s not about me, it’s about these kids. If I don’t go out there (to the mat) ever, as long as they’re winning, I’m happy.” In a year’s time, Cathedral will aim for a fourth-straight wrestling state title, a feat not accomplished since Evansville Mater Dei’s string of nine straight titles from 1995 through 2003. Of the eight Irish state qualifiers Friday and Saturday — including Evan Dickey (106 pounds), Johnny Parker (182 pounds) and Jacob Huffman (195 pounds), who were eliminated Friday — only Seltzer, Dickey and Parker will return. A graduating senior, Rodgers has faith that the program is in good hands. “McGinley is your biggest fan,” Rodgers said. “He always has your back. He’s the guy that if you have a problem, he’s got your back and he will deal with it 100%. He is not only a great wrestling coach, but a great friend to have.” https://www.indystar.com/picture-gallery/sports/high-school/2020/02/23/ihsaa-wrestling-state-finals-2020-championship-matches/4847084002/

  24. I think what is missing is that simple word consistency. I don’t want to sound like I’m bashing officials cause I’m not. I in no way want to diminish what Me Deters did. He deserved to win the state championship. My complaint is when the referee awarded 2 then it was over turned (which I would have protested as well) the ref just went on other refs call. Why wasn’t the time keeper at the table asked.....same in Fieldon and Wagners other 170 semi final match. I’ve had many 5 or 6) say it was 2 but time was up. I asked another ref there and he didn’t think it was 2. My question is the ref in charge on the mat unless obviously wasn’t sure should at least check with other official and table. By the way....if Indiana really wants to get and keep greatvrefs we better get away from this rotating 5 or how ever many years it is to ref at our biggest tournament of the year. I’m not a fan of participation trophies. If a ref is good enough to be b voted in 10 years 8n a row.....kudos to him. (Like saying a wrestler can go to state his senior year only). If a ref is a rookie but does a great job he should get voted in. We’re always going to struggle getting the numbers of officials but more importantly the quality of officials I believe with our system. We have a lot of good refs and need more coming in. I’m just not real sure your going to get people real excited to stay long term with the system we’re using.

  25. I hate complaining about officials because I feel over all they are great at what they do and I have officiated many years myself. My sons match at 170....other 170 semi final amongst some others I know had some controversy. It’s funny that ive had a few referees apologize about the match saying it was a takedown but time was out. Other refs said it wasn’t a takedown but the time was still not out. They award 2 then after the challenge (which I would have done myself) they change the call. The problem I had is not either ref checked at the table with time keeper how much time their was. I watched the Fielden and Wagner semi as well at 170 and again very similar ending. I heard many people from all over the state talk about the stalling or lack of calls they have ever seen at a state tournament. Of course refs make mistakes and this isn’t to bash refs but more that at the state level make sure you get it right if possible. The second official should not be able to over ride without absolutely knowing the call by the head ref officiating the match has called. I’ve been on both sides of this as a coach and ref. I have not and will not bash the refs because I in no way want to diminish or belittle the state championship won by Mr. Deters. He won and earned the victory. I just hate when so much talk about our state finals is on officials not making calls, or not getting in position etc. I think it re emphasizes my first post on this thread when I started it about the way to get officials isn’t a rotating system.... I’m not a fan of participation trophies. You earn it.....if you get in 10 years in a row you earn it and are voted in. If your a rookie but one of the best you deserve to be in there. Bashing officials will never build it where it needs to be.....but there definately needs to be a change to the system if we want the quality as well as quantity of officials we want.

  26. Agree with @Mattyb. Shoot some people who never won a state title thought my brother would get smoked his senior year by a couple kids. There is a reason why these kids are state champs and some of them highly ranked in the country. I think it’s silly to say one state champ would smoke another. I don’t find this thread silly, I enjoy the what if scenarios and the discussion on why someone chose that outcome.

  28. Schools vs Population are 2 very extreme stats that neither represent wrestling very well. I'd be more interested in seeing the percentages based on participation. The weight certification data would be one way to get the number of wrestlers per school. There are very small schools with lots of wrestlers that overall do quite well. And there are very large schools with very few wrestlers that overall don't do so well. The number of wrestlers in the room is going to have a big impact on the success for that school. Anyone know who has access to that data? Just need the number per school, not all the alpha weights or plans.

  35. Also, think about this. Wrestling would not be the first sport to get replay review ok'd by the IHSAA. Rembember, were not a priority Just imagine if wrestling had video review and basketball and football didn't. Football and basketball coaches would freak out and demand video review because wrestling had it. Wrestling and basketball are the poster childs and take leads and no way would wrestling get it first. So if basketball and football got review approved by IHSAA, then possibly the IHSAA would be forced to consider review for wrestling. This is just like wrestle backs. Were not going to get wrestle backs approved by the IHSAA until basketball or football get wrestle backs. We cant have our own special need until basket ball gets to try it out 1st. .

  36. That's a possible idea, but then somebody would request it at team state or the Al smith or team state or some other big tournament, then down slippery slope. Also, think about this, if we didn't have experience in the season with replay, you wouldn't get the bugs worked out. You would have officials, coaches, and filmers and tech people inexperienced with using this technology. You would have a lot of problems with inexperienced camera men and tech issues. You would have coaches and referees with no experience on what situation you could review. I think you would have serious problems at sectonals and regionals. Who would play for the equimpment to be used a few weeks a year. The other issue is that could add a lot of time to wrestling meets which generally are already to long. You potentially could add hours to a meet with more bored fans in the stands watching nothing.

  37. The coach voting is an interesting system in practice. In theory it is smart. Coaches feedback is important and should be taken into consideration. But I have also noticed that I get votes from schools I didn’t even know existed. Any ranking (1-5) from a school/coach that hasn’t seen you officiate is a bad vote for a true assessment. I’ve also heard about refs getting repeated bad scores from the same coach for years that is holding a grudge. Just like wrestlers, officials get better with mat time and experience. If you are a coach still giving a good ref a 1 or a 2 because of a questionable call a decade ago, you are part of the problem. Same goes for if you are giving your buddy a 5 because he has been a great official in the past but maybe his officiating career is on the decline. Base rating off of how they officiate in the present, not the past, and don’t vote for someone you haven’t seen. I think I heard the NCAA had official evaluators, where some of the top older officials rank and assign the younger ones for major tournaments. I wonder if the IHSAA could get feedback from some of the heads of the associations or some of the more seasoned state level officials. Maybe they could also rank the eligible officials and that could be added to the score for evaluation. At the end of the day, the IHSAA’s goal is to crown a state champion—the best wrestler in the state. Shouldn’t we also be working to get the best crew of refs to help in that process? I don’t say this implying the guys there this weekend weren’t the best officials for the job. I know a handful of them and I’d agree they are some of the top officials, much better than myself currently--they are the ones I’ll go to to help get better. But this thread has brought up flaws with the process so I figured I’d offer my take on it and how to maybe improve it.
