    To Logan Miller

I want to first say thank you to @blueandgold for starting this thread. I was not sure who you were but have been informed and I have huge amounts of respect for you young man so again thank you for the kind words about Logan. To everyone else who has commented on here thank you also so very much. I have been around wrestling for many many years as an athlete, coach, ISWA board member & parent. I have gotten to know lots and lots of kids and families from all over the state thru the many many years Thru all the years I have known this is a great sport that can have heartbreaking endings and results and equally great un-believable outcomes and accomplishments. Logan has had a great career in the sport and has achieved things greater than I would have and could have expected for him. The thing that makes me the happiest of all after everything he has gone thru (especially over the last two years) is how he carried himself after it all came to an end on Saturday. Mom and I were completely devastated and honestly I could not think or rationalize what to do next, but seeing Logan stand up shake hands and then come back out and sit with his team was un-believable to me. I talked to him a few times during the rest of the day and while I was teary he assured me he was OK and he was going to be fine just a little disappointed. Now to address all the above comments (like I said I have made many friends along the way during my time in the sport) and I thank all of you for your kind words. Most of you I do not know personally but please seek me out at some point at any ISWA event so I can fist bump you and thank you personally for acknowledging what I know already is that Logan is an awesome & kind young man. To @Darrick Snyder @mikemorgan what a wild ride its been over 4 years from a state title to a heartbreaking loss and everything in between (thanks to Mike for coming in to help navigate this last run). You guys have been awesome and amazing and I know I will be friends with you guys forever and love you both. Thank you for everything. Lastly to @tiger92 thank you for post and to be honest it does not surprise me that Logan found your son on social media some how and reached out to him to congratulate him and wish him good luck going forward. Unfortunately for me I selected seats in the part of the arena that I had sat in the previous times I had been fortunate enough for Logan to be at Semi-state and did not want to break from tradition even though they were not in the "B-burg section". This turned out to be right next to the Princeton fan section. It was tough to be honest, but I did get to see what I think was mom and dad happy and elated for their son Jared Dunn thru the whole day. To me that is what this sport is all about, as I was devastated they were elated and I honestly could not be mad about that. I hope your son enjoys this experience and has the time of his life. Its a great event being at the state finals and I know he will soak it all in and have great life experiences and take a ways. I hope he makes a deep run and can achieve all he wants and dreams about. To all other kids competing this weekend best of luck, stay safe & healthy and accomplish your dreams and enjoy the moments, soak it all in and never have regrets.

  3. If CP attended the Evansville semi-state how many champs would they have? I can count 3 (Frazier, Mendez, Goin) I think 106: 4th 113:DNP 120: DNP 126: 1st 132: 3rd 138: 1st 145: 2nd 152: 1st 160: 4th 170: DNP 182: 2nd 195: DNP 4th at best 220: DNP HWT: DNP This would make life real interesting for the red dogs. EMD would outscore them and would bring home the title. Baumann, Sollars, Critchfield, Seng, Schaeffer, May will all be top 4 this weekend and we will at least 2 champs. When did the famous Region get so bad? Hanover Central, Mishawaka, Lake Central, Munster, and Griffith used to have studs that would make this semi state so tough. Crown Point just runs away with it now, Penn is a very distant second...dare I say that EC is equivalent to Fort Wayne.

  4. I also moved to Indiana and questioned the wrestling format, especially no wrestle backs. It doesn't make sense. But as mentioned in earlier, the IHSAA is very adamant against wrestlebacks and will not change or adapt. But, Ill go into detail as the IHSAA reasoning for this. The IHSAA runs wants to stay true in all sports to their sectional, regional, semi-state state format. This format is more or less more conducive to basketball and football. One of the results is there are a lot of basketball, football and baseball teams that get bad draws and lose early in the tournament due to a more competitive area with more ranked teams. But these teams do not have a consolation opportunity or bracket to compensate for their earlier loss. And the IHSAA's most important objective is that the one best still wins the championship irrelevant of any bad draws to reach that point. So the IHSAA board who is made up of mostly ADs who were former Football, Basketball and baseball coaches feel that just as in other sports, the wrestler should not have the opportunity to compete in a consolation/or wrestleback format just like the team sports and this format ultimately decides the true champion. Note, many Indiana wrestling fans love the drama of the Friday night matches and call it a "Ticket round" where the results have heavy rewards and consequences being if you win you place, you lose you go home. Im my opinion this format is a disgrace and attacks the integrity of the sport. You compile a one class event where mathematically, Indiana is the most difficult state tournament to qualify and you have a great opportunity to showcase the states best talent, but the IHSAA wants to shorten the event and get the kids out. Its silly, and actually if they had another session and had wrestle backs, the IHSAA could charge more money. Ive done some research and have compiled a list below of states that do not have wrestlebacks for their state tournament. List of states without wrestle backs. 1. Indiana

I’ll just add this to show his character. When we got in the back tunnel, we hugged. Told him I loved him and was sorry it ended that way. His response: “Coach, I’m really sorry. I know the team needed my points today and next weekend”. Was tough for me to hold it together to be honest.

  6. Jendreas 4th? Idk about that. Man might win it all this year. Also Cody Goodwin is going to win state this year. You saw it here first. The famous Region is about to crown at least half of the champs come this weekend, just wait.

It’s been a pleasure as a fan to watch you. I want to thank you for what you’ve contributed to Indiana wrestling and want to remind you that you are still a champion day in and day out regardless of how this season may have ended for you. You’ve got some of the greatest coaches in your corner who I know do a great job in not only making great wrestlers, but helping mold fine young men for society to have. So, I know without a doubt you’ll be one of those people we see down the line doing great things in life. I wish you the best and absolute good fortune in your next steps.

I don"t know this young man personally but Sunday I gained much respect for him and his character. He took time to message my son to wish him good luck this week and to tell him he deserved it the way he wrestled Saturday. I think that was a class act and meant alot . I hate it for Logan but if its any consolation it made another young man"s DREAM come true. Good luck to you in the future

  9. By STEVE KRAHstvkrh905@gmail.comRochester was enjoying a super wrestling season going into the second and third stages of the 2022 IHSAA state tournament series. The Clint Gard-coached Zebras placed second to Tell City (losing 36-33 in the championship match) in the Class 1A Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association State Duals (Rochester were 2A State Duals qualifiers in 2015 and 2019) and won the sixth team championship at the Three Rivers Conference meet (2000, 2002, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2022).Rochester reigned at the Peru Sectional, running the program's all-time sectional title total to 12.Then came the Zebras’ first regional crown, won at Maconaquah. After that, Rochester (enrolled around 510) finished on top at the Fort Wayne Semistate. The Zebras edged out Adams Central 82.5 to 80 and clinched the title with a win in the 285-pound championship bout by senior Marshall Fishback.“I would have loved to have just loved it without the theatrics at the end,” said Gard, who has been coaching wrestling at Rochester for 26 years. “But we’ll take it any way we can get it.“These don’t come along very often with schools of our size. It’s taken years to build this. A lot of the kids you’re seeing are kids that wrestled for us in our youth club. It takes a lot to get to this point.”Gard, who counts Derrick Holloway, Bryce Roberts, Damic Beck and Tristan Wilson among his assistant coaches, notes that the last three Fort Wayne Semistate champions — Western in 2020, Oak Hill in 2021 and Rochester in 2022 — have come out of the Peru Sectional.“That’s big for our area of the state,” says Gard. “It’s big for our sectional. It’s big for our regional. It’s big for our conference.“It’s a pretty awesome experience. It’s kids have worked really hard to get there. It was a team effort.”The Zebras brought eight semistate qualifiers to Memorial Coliseum Saturday, Feb. 12 and four walked out as State Finals qualifiers. There was champion Fishback (41-1 at 285) plus three runners-up — freshman Wyatt Davis (27-4 at 113) and sophomores Alex Deming (41-2 at 195) and Brady Beck (40-2 at 220).Juniors Ethan Holloway (39-1 at 120), Aaron Swango (33-8 at 126) and Greyson Gard (33-8 at 152) lost in the second aka “ticket” round and senior Kaleb Shaffer (19-12 at 182) was beaten in the first round.Holloway, Swango, Deming, Beck, Fishback all won TRC, sectional and regional championships. Davis and Gard also placed first at conference and sectional.Gard has carried a roster of 32 boys and five girls this season.“We focus on specific things that we like to do as a team,” says Gard of his practices. “Two or three days a week we’ll try to do a game. We do a lot of dodgeball and try to keep things light.”There’s around 40 wrestlers in Rochester’s middle school program and 60 to 70 at the elementary school level.Wrestling has long been a big deal at the school that had been a regional site when the IHSAA sent the Zebras toward the Merrillville or East Chicago Semistate (prior to 2017-18).“We like to put (wrestling) at the forefront in our community,” says Gard, a physical education and strength coach at Rochester after 23 years of teaching math.Gard is a 1991 of Richmond High School, where he was a state qualifier as a senior. He went on to grapple for head coach Tom Jarman and assistant Rick Troxel at what is now Manchester University.Historically, Cory Fornal (Class of 2006) is Rochester’s all-time victory leader with 154. He was a state runner-up at 140 as a senior.No. 2 on the victory list — Damon Hummel (Class of 1994) went to the State Finals four times (qualifier at 189 in 1991, second at 189 in 1992, second at heavyweight in 1993 and third at heavyweight in 1994). My earliest memory of Logan Miller was at the Grand River Rumble years ago. My kid was wrestling the rookie rumble and @JMILL text me and asked what mat we were on. They came to watch Little 3B and Logan immediately started cheering Brendan like it was his brother. It caught my attention and thought how cool that was, they didn't know each other at all. I'm sure L3B doesn't even remember but as a parent I do and always will. Like we say in the South, The Millers are good people and I think the world of them (even Jason)!

I'll add to this. Having a seat right by the BB fellas, couldn't help but notice how he reacted afterwards. Took his few moments to let it sink in(tough to see). Then when Dunn hit his 2nd headlock, his reaction was priceless. Then,Dunn hits another headlock and Miller is on his feet(as were most) and applauding his foe. This shows alot of character about the young man. Nothing but respect. And I'll add, this went for the whole BB team. Had some chatter with some of the wrestlers and a coach. Straight class.

  13. The whole premise of your original post was to excite the CP/EC faithful and illicit a response so you could "debate" the legitimacy of the ECSS. I don't mind people having opinions, although I do wish several people on here would express them a lot less often... I digress. Most minds on this forum believes CP is the best dual team and tournament team in the state of Indiana this year. No doubt Brownsburg is right there with them, and CG & Irish are a step behind.

  14. I honestly wish I knew the answer to changing their mind. I dont want to get into the "class" wrestling debate. But wrestle backs... or maybe a 24 man bracket at state (more qualifiers) would definitely help get more national exposure and recruitment to college programs. Every year deserving kids go home without a chance to wrestle at state. Now let me be clear I (like most) have a love/hate relationship with our single class no wrestle back system. Its great when you go to state...place at state... or win. You know you are one of the 16 best, 8best or the best kid in the state. It makes it that much sweeter On the other side tho it can be devastating to get a "death" draw. Often times kids can/have beat 3 of the other kids that go to state but they can't beat the one kid they need to in the ticket round. As you get more acquainted with indiana wrestling you will see how important a good draw is. No matter how good you might be a good draw always helps... can take you from qualifier to under the lights. I always feel for the kids that do everything in their power to go to state but due to a bad draw won't get the chance to wrestle. You can win regionals and be undefeated... and still fall victim to the death draw Yes I know life's not always fair.... still doesn't stop kids from being crestfallen and half depressed when they see another kid advance that they beat only because of a draw or a weak/strong semi-state All you can do is support and encourage.

  17. Seeing as how Rochester won the FWSS, with 4 qualifiers....I do not think the FWSS is comparable to ECSS. No offense, There were I think 4 or 5 schools at ECSS with 4+ qualifiers. Okay EVSS has had a great year, but.... #1 I think you are wrong about a lot of your predictions....Ill get to this in a sec. #2 you do not know what "Da Region" is if you are including Mishawaka in that sentence. #3....EVSS has the #2, #3, #5 4a schools...#1, #5, #6, #7 3A schools...It is very obvious your semi state had a great year.ECSS has the #1, #6 4a schools...#9, #10 3a schools. EVSS was much deeper this year. (VERY OBVIOUS) CP should be way ahead of the #6 4a school... Not to mention that Mount Carmel has multiple "219" kids wrestling for them...This also would make the ECSS tougher. Add in.. Lemley, Acuna, Doan, Mendoza, Resendez, Drousias, (Probably missing a few) Now on to the CP talk... 106-Jendreas is better than you think 113-Kaptur was seconds away from state, just lost to the #1 kid at regionals 4-0...He places at your SS and got a bad draw at our semi state. 120-Cruz, another bad draw at our SS. Bohn has 1 loss on the season and it came this week 160-Goodwin is the real deal, and is better than you think... 195- Takes 4th maybe 3rd 220- Has a win over a kid that techd RDIII

  18. When you say “do better” FWSS ? Has me thinking . Been around this sport long enough to know it takes time to develop Quality wrestlers and even longer for teams to be a Quality Team. Giving that the other 2-3 SS are benefiting from multiple wrestling Academies in their areas. Your opinion when will FWSS “do better” ? I’ll just throw out a year or years. I’m going to put FWSS at about 10-15 years . Yes , I’ll say 2035 Ft. Wayne SS will have a legit team(s) and good group of competition coming out of FWSS. Giving the fact Andy’s Academy stays open for that area schools to benefit . Takes time, gotta have kids dedicated to the sport. In that 10-15 years the other SS keep reloading beating up on each other year after year . Two SS will stay the same New Castle & Evansville for the long future . Maybe a realignment may take place in that time . Separating schools . Not sure on Region area, you got Illinois & Michigan stealing good wrestlers from that area to Mt. Carmel & Michigan (Davison) I’ll throw that school out there because I thought about 4 years ago that #1 Barr kid was projected to go CP as well . Up & down like a roller coaster for some schools in that area . Some years they good, this year CP team is a juggernaut, others years their not . Just telling you how I see it . Posters, Trolls, Haters . Prove me Wrong FWSS . Kinda hope you do for us wrestling fans . We need more great wrestlers. Just my 0.000002 crypto Indiana Mat bananas cents

    1. It's such a brutal semi state that state champions/placers/qualifiers don't make it through the gauntlet. 2. This was the worst semi state experience I've had. The place was freezing! low 60's on the floor. Not good for wrestlers or fans. NO TRACK SCORES ON THE BIG SCREEN? No wifi? The announcer for the finals did not emphasize the wrestlers or their accomplishments. It was monotone announcing. On top of that, you could barely understand what he was saying between the music playing and the low quality PA system. Luckily, great wrestling made up for it. 3. Great job to Triple B and his minions for picking 12 of the 14 champions! Their picks were pretty spot on. 106-All four of these wrestlers can place next weekend with the right draw. Hockaday the favorite to win state. 113-Wow! Haines beats Seng with about 2 seconds left on the clock with a beautiful switch. Seng looked good though. Big win for Goss over Krueger in the ticket. 120-This weight started with 10 ranked wrestlers but only two ranked wrestlers actually punched their ticket! First, Miller goes down via headlock in the first round. Then a few minutes later, McFeeley upsets Zirklebach! That's one state champ and one state placer that didn't make it out of the first round! Oh wait, Egli goes down to Syra first round too. Egli won semi state last year with four pins! Tough draw for the talented young man. Cowden was beating the headlock monster Dunn 11-0 when Dunn threw the headlock and pinned him to punch his ticket. But he wasn't DUNN yet! HE then picked off McFeeley in the battle of unbeatens. Lykins handled Kessinger and Syra to punch his ticket. Gilbert gave up some stalling points to a battle tested Courtney and escaped with a one point win. Gilbert over Lykins in overtime in the semi finals and then Gilbert pinned Dunn in the finals. Gilbert is now 12-0 at semi state with two pins in the finals match. 126- Butler had a close match with Glenn in the ticket but separated himself from the pack with good wins over KT and Haines. 132-Ison and Schoeff battle it out again. I sure hope the state finals brackets don't have Ison vs Anthony on Friday night! Kresija with a quick pin over Hammack in the ticket round. Mooresville regional sweeps this weight. 138-Garcia with a statement pin over Hayhurst in the finals and major decision over Turner in the semi finals. Kid really turned it up since last year! Freshman Roudebush quietly punches his ticket. 145-As expected, Watson over Garcia in the finals. These two should place next weekend. Oliver with two big matches to punch his ticket over Smith and Lody. 152-Cicciarelli over May in the semis. DuPon punches his ticket as a regional 4th place finisher here. 160-Conway goes through Boe and Law to win. Throw in Newman and you have four kids who are more than capable of placing top 8. Boe is 38-1 and a terrible draw for any 2nd place finisher. 170-Another 3rd place finisher from Eville will get a 2nd place finisher nightmares is Khawaja from Floyd Central. Phillips is 40-2 and will scare any Semi state champ he draws Friday night. Baumman ahead of the field here. Farmer is underrated. Most of his losses are probably to Baummann and Khajawa. 182-Buchanan makes a statement over Henry. Henry is such a tough freshman. We have three more years of him! McBee gets a bad draw when Emerine dropped out. That allowed Regional 4th place finisher Alex Rose to punch his ticket! Look for Schroeder of Southridge to place. 195-Sollars, Purdy, Willman. Studs. 4th place regional finisher Higgins 16-16 tech falls Sam Allen 9-1 first round. Didn't see that coming! 220-Critchield cruises to victory. Morril and Farmer are both tough as nails. 285- Jones handles business. Johnson from Center Grove is only a sophomore but looks and wrestles like a senior. Beau Noland of North Knox finishes around 26 wins and 26 pins but one loss in the ticket round.

The answer to changing the IHSAA leaderships minds is quite easy… lots of $$$. The IHSAA like the NCAA has proven itself useless. The NCAA on a functional level makes more sense due to the national scale but it clearly governs poorly. I think every state should really begin to question the validity of their athletic governing bodies.

  25. Completely agree. There's not enough parking. There's not enough good seating. You can only view all 4 mats from a small section of the arena. People are constantly standing in the way along the railing and the poor security guards need to patrol a bunch of loud and rowdy people for the entire day. A few encounters I was sure were about to turn into fist fights. Was well run, but not a great place to watch a tournament.

  26. Shoutout to Delta and all three of the wrestlers you mentioned. Bollinger looked incredible against Julianna, Mosier and Holloway was one of the most exciting matches of the day, and Braxton Russell was my second biggest rankings miss this year(sorry Armen Koltookian as well), and I had a feeling the day of sectionals that he was going to make me pay for that one. Delta has something special going on right now, I’m looking forward to seeing the program keep growing.

Glad you put this out here as well. I know this is about Logan but it can't go without saying the bond that happens with Coach/athletes. There's more to what is just seen on the mat. There's alot of titles in some cases tied to that "coach" label. Such as he being comfortable enough to come confide to you. Some athletes don't do that. I feel your pain through the words you put here and also see confidence in knowing that what you have helped groom this young man,he will be successful in whatever he chooses. Kudos coach

    Wrestle Backs

I am very new to this forum and just recently began following Indiana high school wrestling. Can someone explain to me the rationale for not having wrestle backs at the regional, semi state or even the state tourney? This seems like such a disservice to the kids who put hours into their training just to go to the biggest tournament of their lives and have it end after one match... Why is this format the accepted method? Who made this decision? Is it what is best for the sport and the athletes competing?

  33. While being a huge EMD fan and having some bias to them I think we can’t predict how anyone would finish putting all those teams together in the same semi state I think that with draws either A some would knock each other out before placement and wouldn’t move onto state B some of the other schools with a couple of good guys would knock off other guys from CP,EMD,BB,CG guys before placement C it’s the Evansville semi state and anything can happen on any given day so while BB beat EMD by 59 points I think you add them all together and we have scores that no one can even predict

Yes, track does have a standard. It is pretty tough to get, but it is something like the rolling average of the past three year's 9th place marks. You aren't going to qualify if you aren't really really good, but you also aren't going to get boxed out just because you have 4 D-1 prospects in your sectional or regional.
    2 points
  35. Pretty big for our regional to win semi-state the past three years. Rochester has a great program and they're extremely young. Clint has things going in the right direction there with some studs coming up as well.

  36. It’s no problem at all, sir. I have a huge amount of respect for the Brownsburg program and everything they bring to Indiana. They’re some of the hardest working kids and fiercest competitors on the mat, and they’re absolutely the nicest off of it. I know @Darrick Snyder has done a great job and I had the pleasure of being coached by @mikemorgan in high school as well, so I know the kind of advice he gives not only about wrestling, but being a good person in general. Brownsburg has always been all class, and judging by the responses, Logan surely exemplifies that. I’ll always root for my Hendricks County neighbors.

  37. OK I'll bite on this topic. So, you want to put CP in the Evansville SS with EMD, BB and CG. You say that the way that you have it playing out is that EMD would score more points than CP and win the SS title. I think we would both agree that both teams are wrestling at a very high level and would be very interesting to see, but where I am missing things is where is BB in your equation? EMD finished second in the SS to BB by 59 points and let's be real if Logan Miller doesn't get caught in a headlock then that margin would have been a lot bigger. Don't get me wrong that EC SS is down this year, but to say that EMD would leapfrog BB and then if CP were there beat them too is a bit of stretch. Also, I do recall some chatter during the EMD run of championships that they had a bit of an easier road (not saying it was easy but compared to Merrillville at the time it would be very similar to what you are saying now) to state and we still consider the 03 team in conversation as best ever. In the long run it would have been interesting to see, but if that SS did have CP in it, it is highly likely all of those teams could have beaten each other down we would be discussing some other team and their easy road to state.
    2 points
  38. If you want to debate the semi states lets do it. CP is the best dual team they have already showed that. The point of the post was to put CP in Evansville, and see how many champs they would have. EMD has two locks this weekend and will have close to 50 points between them, Seng, Schaefer, Critchfield, May will determine if we have the strength to win it all. I think we will be right in the mix and I am very excited to see some Wildcats pull off the upset. #BringBackTheTights

Great write up@navy80!! Sooooo many intense matches, place was electric. At one point there were 4 feature matches on all at once. People were dorking out about Dunn's semi match and I bet most of pace missed Gilbert/Lykins going into OT. I mean just absolute match after match for all 4 rounds. My one and only beef (other than I should be announcing and DJing, I mean get rid of YMCA and let's do some Kendrick!) was that they did semis on 4 mats (assuming to save time) and then took a 75 minute break. ABSURD!!!!!!

  41. Tough loss to the Buckeyes. Hudkins is still on top of his game winning. And Rooks gave Sasso everything in a Tight loss, and after beating Storr Friday night. For the second match in a row you can see the disparity in talent levels of a top 5 team and Indiana. And then top 20 team of Purdue with Indiana. Maybe throw in there Michigan state and Indiana isn’t that far off of getting to a top 20 or so program. Team aside, they need to get individuals on the podium every year at NCAA to be able to attract the talent they want.

  44. Funny thing too, is that at 120, 6 of the 8 placers are qualifiers, but the guy who WON the tournament is not a qualifier this year. What a funny little tournament we have here.

  45. Some of us knew. The rest are finding out. Underrated by everyone. Tough draw with Lone & Boe in his quarter bracket, but he will be a tough out.

    Wrestle Backs

I was just getting ready to say that I just asked this a few days ago. Basically IHSAA won’t budge on this even though many if not most states do wrestle backs. It makes entirely no sense to even us novice wrestling fans.

  47. Buchanan and Veazy in the semis at 182 should be fun.

    State Pairings

The semi finals are crazy. Cheaney v Seltzer Koontz v Watson Critchfield v Carroll Whiteneck v Jones These are just off the top of my head.

    To Logan Miller

No one wants to go out like that, but yet it happens none the less. The metal of a man is how you come back from these unexpected setbacks and where you take things afterward. There is always more to come in life than your time on the mat. To all those ending their season earlier than a state title I hope you can one day see the benefits wrestling has given you beyond the final result. The true benefits of wrestling will always be more than just a state title. For Logan, and the rest, please try to measure the journey as a whole rather than just dwelling on the final match. The entire journey is what you will truly cherish and what will really impact the people you interact with in your life. Embrace the wrestling journey which only a few in life were willing to ever take.

  50. Man this really stinks. The IHSAA really fumbled this one... I understand their want to move away from GA seating & into reserved but this was poorly thought out... Opportunities for improvement next year: - There should be an option for an all session pass that can be purchased on Wednesday or when sales first start. Stinks for fans wanting to attend all sessions to have to buy tickets twice, pay ticket master service fees twice, etc. - Allow for schools to buy blocks of seating in advance (50-100 Tix more if needed) so the school can sell them to their parents, fans, etc. So that programs can still have their "blocks" & sit together Just my $0.02
