  1. On behalf of Silas, myself and the rest of our family....we want to bring awareness to how accommodating the IHSAA was for us this weekend. All of us (including myself) at times get so caught up in what we feel they do wrong as it pertains to wrestling, we can easily become blinded to the multitude of right they do. Mr. Faulkens seen to it we had All-Access passes, and we’re allowed in our regular seats at our convenience. That type of gesture deserves a lot of credit. Because in what is always an extremely exhausting weekend.....factoring my health, my wife having to carry my breathing machine and our youngest daughter, without their philanthropic gesture, this weekend would not have been possible for me. I also want to commend Jacob Laplace and the Mishawaka Coaching staff. They had a tremendous gameplan of counter wrestling by the edge of mat to slow Silas’ relentless pace. We have been friends and thought a lot of Jacob and family going all the way back to 6th grade. He and Silas were always summer teammates with the Outlaws and forged a bond that continues to this day. Wrestling Family can be an equal bond as blood at times, because there’s such an understanding of the sacrifice involved for wrestlers, coaches and parents. We have a lot of genuine love for many of the Caveman faithful. Specifically the Sandefur’s, Fogarty’s, Walker’s and of course the Laplace family. I’m extremely proud of Jacob’s effort. He wrestled Silas as well as ANYONE has the last 2 yrs. But more importantly....I’m proud of Jacob as a young man of faith. Indiana Tech stole a diamond in the ruff recruit! But Coach Pompei will undoubtedly help grow his solid foundation to achieve tremendous things at the next level. -The Allred’s

    THE BEST SEATS AT STATE

Saving seats is getting out of hand. Many parents and grandparents just want to see their son wrestle. I ran into a mother last night that was chased from her seats cause she dared try to sit near the mat where her son was going to wrestle and another team’s fans had “reserved” three complete sections on level 2. She was very upset - this is out of control it shouldn’t be like that

  4. So my brother was a pretty good wrestler. 4x State placer, 3x state champ. I watched him wrestle at state his freshman year place 7th. Got to see every match of his that year. The next year I decided to sign a dotted line and joined the military. During his first state championship he beat a pretty good kid, named Eric Galka, I was in basic training and missed the match. During his second championship run, he beat another good kid, Anthony Quiroz, I was in Iraq at the time and didn’t see it in person. So during his senior year I made it a point to go see every match of his, near or far. He was going for his third state title, and 4x time state placer. Become the first Portage wrestler to ever do both feats. Still in the military I had something going on Saturday morning at state, got to see his Friday night match, but missed the quarters match. Sean didn’t have one point scored against him, he didn’t let anyone up, no escapes, nothing. Pure domination. Coach Wilkins who was the head coach at the time got me a coaches pass so I could go down with Sean, watch him warm up before the finals match, and be right there when he came off the match. He told me that one was for me. I finally got to see my brother win a state while I was standing by the warm up mat they have set up. By far one of my favorite memories I’ve ever had at state.

  5. I think that while we are sitting during breaks & intermission, they should use that big tele-tron hanging down in the center to either show random pictures of past champions, etc. or do wrestling trivia. I know the crowd would be very entertained!!!!

  7. 1. Hollendonner upsetting Noehre then upsetting Levitz to make the finals. Someone get him a scholarship already and iron out the few kinks in his neutral game that Dickens exploited. 2. Bettich getting up from an illegal slam that could have given CP the team title over Cathedral had he stayed down. The Western lady next to me blurted out “that kid is feisty” and “give Bettich the Mental Attitude Award.” I heard that award is decided bf finals start though. If so, that should change bc finals performances and conduct should be considered. 3. Previously undefeated Logan Boe doing a backflip after taking 3rd. 1st place isn’t everything. 4. Kervin publicly coughing up the secret for the best way to stall: Keep them on their back, and the ref won’t call a stale mate.

    Officiating Question

I didn’t see the match, so I can’t comment on the specifics of the situation, but I can point you to the rule book to clarify your confusion about how the referee and assistant referee can impact a changed call. Rule 3-2 explains the role of the assistant in helping to “minimize human error in matters of rule application and judgment.” 3-2-2: The assistant referee will be granted the same mobility as the referee and will complement and assist the referee in making calls. The referee will be in complete control of the match. 3-2-2 f and e f. When necessary, the referee and assistant shall meet briefly on the edge of the mat away from the wrestlers and coaches, away from the wrestlers and coaches, away from the scorer’s table to discuss the point of disagreement; e. The assistant may support, disagree or have no opinion relative to a decision. The referee shall prevail in the event of disagreement; So, based on the rules, it’s always the referee’s call on whether or not to make a change. The assistant doesn’t have the ability to change a call. Their opinion may influence the referee to change the call, but that falls on the referee. Normally you see a change if the referee knows they may have been out of position, or in a situation like what you described, may not have had a clear idea when in the process of the move time expired. If it was a bang-bang call, the ref may have been iffy on the timing (maybe not 100% confident in his own call to begin with) and his assistant might have had a better view of the clock. Obviously just speculating as to why the change was determined.

  12. Getting in and finding a seat is a whole problem within its own. They have 3000 people herded in there like cattle preventing them from going to find a seat. Another 3 to 5000 people standing on the opposite side of security waiting for them to release the 1st group so they can get through security. You surely don't wanna be in that 1st group with a child Or elderly because the child will just get Trampled. Friday when they released everybody to get through the 1st gate to only get stopped by ticket processing there was about a 5 year old boy who was ran over By 3 other people who wasn't even paying attention and not 1 of them stopped. It was a sick and sad situation. The idea of general seating is completely wrong for an event of this magnitude. It is extremely hard or near impossible for a family to find consecutive seats to sit to watch their Son or teammates. The idea of blocking off complete sections is wrong . The IHSAA/BLF needs to fix that issue. The IHSAA/BLF has tickets available on presale they should be able to sell those tickets as reserved seating and anything not sold could be general seating. This would stop the headache of finding a seat for a group of 5 people. If they sold reserved seating I/ we wouldnt have to argue with people that those 2 seat were for my wife and son who left to go through the bathroom. This would also stop some of the pushing and running to find seating. We have one of the greatest events in the country and yet the Process to get in and find a seat is a complete joke.

  14. From someone who is part of the PAC in Southern IN I thought a big highlight was seeing more PAC athletes representing at State this year. South Spencer, Southridge, Tell City, North Posey, HH and new PAC school Boonville all had some kids travel to Indy to put in some work in on the mats. It’s great to see some new coaches come in and fix programs that previous ones completely killed. Look at HH for example- Coach Zollman’s second year as HH head coach and already has had 3 kids qualify at state, one getting 5th yesterday, I could be wrong but don’t think they’ve had anyone since around 2012. I watched the previous coach ruin that program, exciting to see it’s coming back and impressive how quickly. Great testament to his coaching and abilities. A guy you don’t want to coach against but happy he is helping represent your conference. Extremely smart pickup for them. NP, SS both with place winners. What a way to go out your final year with Stewart- congratulations & thank you Coach Packer. NP winning 1A Team State this year as well with Southridge and Tell City representing 2nd & 3rd as well. Exciting times for the PAC, happy to welcome Boonville & their stud to the conference as well! PAC wrestling on the ups! Proud to be a part of the PAC & continue to watch it grow!

  15. The usher point is key. Most of them just awkwardly stare at you while trying to find a seat. Lisa from section 16 was awesome! Actively finding open seats for people and if a group tried to say open seats were being saved, she would ask if the people were on site. If the answer was no, she'd tell the group to let the people who were there sit there.

I was lucky to have a suite this year and usually I don’t care enough to fight the fight but the answer is just sit down and blow the people off. They have no recourse because seat saving isn’t allowed.

  22. I’d say OR. Though AND would likely equal more success at a team state level. On the OR side: I’m sure some of these schools have decent coaches who are good guys which deserve credit for the hours they put into the teams. Not taking anything away from them for keeping thing going during the season and doing their part. But let’s face it the academy development in the off season is helping a few is their studs improve beyond the choices they would have in their schools practice room. There is a reason some of these random schools are showing up at Semi-State and State more regularly with a few studs when previously they barely had anyone win round 1 of SS. It’s good for the schools that they can add more parody to the sport without us having to over class everything, but the development is increased in part due to access they have to a quality academy. On the other side sure the open enrollment, especially in populated areas, lets some talent pool together with the bigger name coach of the area too. We’ve seen some schools rise to higher success in the last 10 years from this. But on the other end it seems some kids still want to rep their home school, and the access to these academies help the get added partners if their rooms not providing one. Like I said it’s a different time.

The bulk will be done during the summer months and will not affect the Pacers...thus likely not wrestling or any of the IHSAA basketball state finals games. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/basketball/wnba/fever/2019/06/24/bankers-life-fieldhouse-renovations-force-indiana-fever-relocate-outdoor-plaza-ice-skating/1528316001/

  27. If Parkinson gets on the opposite side of the bracket he makes the finals and scores some team points. Hayhurst and Bauman losing by two points on Friday night definitely cost them as well. Hayhurst was up 4-2 at one point. Bauman was up 5-2 at one point. If these two didn't lose their lead and Parkinson gets a better draw they'd place 9. But, woulda coulda shoulda

  33. I thought in the spirit of it being the greatest weekend of the year we can share the greatest experience/story that we have encountered during state weekend. Mine has to be my first year as head coach and being FORTUNATE enough to coach such a hardworking kid that earned earned every bit of his state championship. I say fortunate because I know some coaches go there entire careers (my dad being one of them, 20 years) without having the joy of coaching a champ under the lights. Going down 5-0 in the first period, Jake wrestled his tail off to score 9 unanswered points to take the 195 title. i do not coach anymore but I think about that match all the time and look forward every year to seeing a match where the underdog comes from behind to win a big one. I know there are some great/inspirational memories and stories from this weekend and look forward to reading them! Best of luck to everyone this weekend and drive safe!

  35. Even when I knew who was going to catch him, I feared for his life. Honestly thought he would fall backwards, stumble on the awkward transition from mat to basketball court to concrete, and then hit his head. Speaking of, why put the basketball court down? It makes for such a potentially dangerous transition when wrestlers go off the mat. Seems like they could just put the mats directly on the concrete and put in some extra mats around the edges for safety.
