  1. I had to share this. We have a young guy in our club who is deaf. I remind our guys often that RJ probably is the toughest guy in our room. Last year was his first practice ever. First time in a wrestling room. He was in first grade and cannot hear or speak. I could only imagine how difficult that had to be for him as we watched him go through his first couple of practices. One year later, RJ is always the first guy in the room at practice. He is usually the last guy to leave. You can see that wrestling is something that RJ and his dad truly enjoy. Yesterday dad was sending us pictures of him and RJ watching the finals on TV. This morning he sent the collage of RJ in front of the TV with guys that have been in our room this past year. At some of our camps, we let dad know which guys have great resumes and should do quite well in the upcoming HS Season. RJ and his dad were excited to get pictures with the, and all the guys were great with RJ, even though it's not the easiest to communicate with him. After I saw the picture it made me think of Spiderman's phrase. With great power comes great responsibilities. Congrats to all of this year's state champs. I do want to thank the guys that were in our room and took just a few minutes to interact with RJ. To be honest, I had forgot all about those champs that were around in the past year.......but RJ and his father didn't! They will remember forever!

  2. A great time at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony today (kudos to HoF direct Scott Schwarz and the IHSWCA executive staff).) Great to hear the stories about the inductees and what they have done to build our great sport. I will be forever indebted to all those who helped me along the way. Special thanks to Coach Rex Peckinpaugh for his touching induction speech for me. Rex shared a poem he wrote about the rivalry and enduring friendships between coaches and I wanted to share it with all of you. Thanks, Rex, I love you, brother. I look across the mat And I see a friend I see a man who has toiled like I And never gives up until the end I see a man who is a leader One that I certainly have admired I see a guy who I know keeps going Even at times when he is oh so tired I see a man who I want to beat But one I love just the same A man I have struggled against In this crazy coaching game I see a friend I have cried with One I have laughed with as well A man who I know if I needed him Would always answer the bell I see a friend over there In that corner across the way I see a brother I have fought with But one I will love till my dying day. --Rex Peckinpaugh 2/2019

  3. One of the coolest things about this IndianaMat gig is getting to know the kids throughout the state. It is no coincidence that the best wrestlers are also the best kids off the mat.

Loved the sandwich at first thought it was a donut. Also a classy move on handling the boos. Kids butt heads it happens im sure Carson never did it on purpose. You fix it and move on. Last year a kid got stitches on the mat. Great kid and family. Great win. Live it up. Enjoy it and dont let anyone take you moment. Congratulations

  5. While digging through old brackets last summer, there was one that really caught my eye in the talent level. Since not everybody from the bracket had gone through their senior years yet, I decided I’d wait until their senior seasons were over to gauge just how insanely talented the 2016 106 lb weight class ended up being. Since they added onto their accomplishments last night, here is what we got when it’s all said and done. 1: Asa Garcia(1st, 3rd, 1st, 1st) 2: Keyuan Murphy(X, X, SQ, 2nd) 3: Ty Mills(2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd) 4: Kory Cavanaugh(X, Q, 4th, 6th) 5: Sam Fair(5th, INJ, 2nd, Q) 6: Hunter Watts(6th, 2nd, 1st, 3rd) 7: Brayden Curtis(7th, 1st, 1st, 4th) 8: Jacob Moran(8th, N/A, 1st, 1st) Q: Lukasz Walendzak(Q, X, 4th, 8th) Q: Jose Diaz(X, Q, 8th, 8th) Q: Tanner DeMien(7th, Q, Q, Q) Q: Devon Casebolt(Q, X, 6th, X) Q: Gavin Rose(Q, 7th, X, INJ) Q: Brycen Denny(X, Q, X, 8th) Q: JC Herring(X, X, Q, Q) Q: Trey McCartney(X, Q, X, X) Between that state bracket, adding previous and future accomplishment, those 16 wrestlers managed to produce; 46 State qualifications 32 State medals 20 semi-finals appearances 13 finals matches 8 state championships That alone is incredible. But what do the numbers look like when we add in the semi-State qualifiers who didn’t make it to the championships? X: Cayden Rooks(X, 1st, 2nd, 1st) X: Andrew Black(X, 2nd, 2nd, N/A) X: Brock Peele(X, 4th, 7th, Q) X: Seth Johnson(X, 4th, X, 8th) X: Fernando Flores(X, X, Q, 6th) X: Logan Stephenson(X, X, X, 7th) X: Andres Moreno(X, X, 7th, X) X: Tanner Schoeff(X, Q, Q, Q) X: Kade Zadylak(X, INJ, Q, Q) X: Logan Mosser(X, X, Q, Q) X: Brayden Shearer(X, X, Q, Q) X: Joe Just(X, X, Q, Q) X: Jake Armstrong(X, Q, X, Q) X: Alexander Streuder(Q, X, X, Q) X: Clay Egli(X, X, X, Q) X: Wyatt Miller(X, X, X, Q) X: Ben Streeter(X, X, Q, X) X: Harrison Hadley(X, X, Q, X) 79 state qualifications 44 state medals 27 semi-finals appearances 18 finals matches 10 state championships That is 34 wrestlers who managed at least one state qualification. Over half of the semi-state qualifiers from that year managed to make it out at some point. Adding in wrestlers who didn’t even make it to/out of regionals that year…. X: Chase Wilkerson(X, X, Q, 7th) X: Evan Beasley(X, X, X, 7th) X: Kyle Holman(X, X, X, 6th) X: Danny Tolin(X, Q, Q, X) X: Colin Reagan(X, Q, Q, X) X: Alex Petro(X, Q, Q, N/A) X: Martin Cruz(X, X, X, Q) X: Evan Burge(X, X, X, Q) X: Noah Gardner(X, X, Q, X) X: Chris Schuller(X, Q, X, X) 93 state qualifications 47 state medals 27 semi-finals appearances 18 finals matches 10 state championship Quite a talented group of kids. I’m sure the 106 weight class usually produces the most future talent compared to other weight classes, but even so, this seems to be substantial. Seven wrestlers have already committed to wrestling D1, in addition to multiple other college signings. Congrats to all of these kids on great careers.

Guys it’s fine. Again.. he really don’t care. He’s here at Indy nationals coaching the underclassmen and soaking up being a state champ. With that said... please don’t do it to other kids. It may crush them. But as far as Carson goes he’s been through enough that one mistake or boos weren’t going to ruin a great season.

I’ll never understand boos to a kid. A KID! Sure boo the coaches or staff. But not a kid. It was an unintentional headbutt. There is no need to boo any kid in high school.

the boos speak to how ridiculous those ppl are putting down a hs kid and don't reflect on how most feel about Carson.. He didn't deserve that treatment even though he can handle it.

Get two takedowns the first period. Why choose bottom against Slivka? That changed the whole match.

  10. When I asked “was the ref in position?”... I meant did he see the scapulas on the mat for two seconds? Which is the rule. Watching the video on Track.... :49 cradle is in position the pin was called in and the ref is up on his feet... by the time :48 hits the clock he is smacking the mat. Assuming he had full view even if he saw it when he was up on his feet, it still couldn’t have been a two count. And when they release, you can see vidyua’s left shoulder was on top of garcia’s chest. This is the type of call that needs to be reviewed, imho

There was no tarnish on that win. Maybe a little ugly with all of the breaks? Maybe that's the same thing.... I wasn't a fan of all the boos. Carson got a well earned State Championship. Donahue showed heart and battled hard despite adversity. Kudos to both.

  12. You have two state champions battling for a state title and you call a very questionable and very fast pin fall (IMO). Ruined what could’ve been an epic match. Fans lost that one.

    Congrats

Congratulations to Cathedral on a job well done. Congrats Asa on 3. Good luck at IU and to all the others that have signed to go there. Congrats to the 14 state champs. Congrats to the parents that raised these kids to be well spoken, good young men. It was impressive to hear all the champs carry theirselves with confidence and gratitude. How about that national anthem! No kneeling! Respect for the sport and our great country. G

To clarify... (and i know that i really don’t have to but want to help you understand) as he went to make contact with his head, Donahue moved back. At the point he did lunge forward in an attempt to make head to head contact (he likes to be forehead to fire head). Made the mistake of coming forward too hard. It was a mistake but I assure you that it was not malicious. It also took Carson out of his game. He clearly did not wrestle the same after the head butt. He felt bad and didn’t want to do it again. We did get a chance to discuss it with the Donahues last night. Glad to report that we made some new friends. Great people. Culver is going to be very good!!! Btw.. he’s good with the boos. Not upset about it. Just proud to be a champ. Hopefully the legend of the pb&j will live on for years!

great win. he was probably a little over hyped at the start of the match. I was embarrassed by the boos. left a bad taste in my mouth for a champ that didn't deserve the boos. #pb&j

  16. For warm-ups, have to give the nod to Cathedral. The robes were noticeable without being gaudy. They were a great homage to where our sport has come from. Robes used to be the norm. Randy Qualitza is smiling down in South Florida! Congrats to Coach McGinley and all the Irish on the title. Rodgers and Slivka showed amazing resilience in the finals. Great wins against great opponents.

Last word on that pb&j ... so Carson , Nick, Slivka, and Rogers eat the sandwich. Carson has one bite left and Rogers says “dude don’t eat that last bite! We can put it in a baggie and sale it!” Then Carson ate it! First dumb move of the night. We all know the second! Again... he is sorry. Messed up the pace of the match. Not the typical day for him.

  20. There were literally thousands of calls throughout the weekend involving Avon and the other teams. Many of them went for Avon and many of them against I’m sure. And many of those that went Avon’s way may too have been thought of as incorrect by Avon’s opponents. And those calls may very well have had just as big of an influence on the final tournament scoring as the one to which you refer. To single out one single call as the one that decided the state championship is just a bit absurd. Hey, I get it. I get frustrated when I see calls that I think are “obviously incorrect”. And sometimes I too speculate what might have been. But there is a reason why we have disinterested (and trained in the rules) parties making calls in the matches, doing their best to make impartial and fair calls. And why us not-so-impartial participants and fans are not allowed to make the calls.

  21. There has been alot of speculation about coach Tonte's height versus mine. Some even suggested Jim was shorter than me. Anyway, today after the Hall of Fame Banquet I got a picture of Coach Tonte and me. I think you will notice he is pretty tall. He has been my friend for quite awhile and will always be a giant in my eyes.

I was kind of disappointed they showed the replay of the headbutt and even more that the interviewer referenced it in the interview. Sure, the wrestler shouldn’t have head butted his opponent, whether it was intentional or unintentional. But the referee made the call and penalized the kid. So I didn’t think the booing was necessary.

    Rules question

Let's take some words out of his post and I think there is a legitimate question in there. Remove "intentional" and "potential broken nose/concusssion". The valid question is...... Since it was penalized, what would the outcome have been if Donahue could not have continued? Would it be different if he couldn't continue immediately or if it became a blood issue that couldn't be worked around/stopped? If we turn this into a rules question using this as a case study, then I believe it is perfectly legit. Would love to hear from any officials or rules experts on that.

    Wow

All of you guys bagging on Washington for gas, injury time etc need to put a sock in it. He lost the match on the first missed throw, period. Slivka was always fighting and that is to his credit. If you listened at all to the broadcast or followed any of Wash's results, you know he cranks out the throws when he thinks they are there. The guy is multidimensional on his feet. I have no idea of the deal with injury time, but for all we know, he can be asthmatic and truly needed the time. Sometimes you have to sacrifice a call to stay in the game. I just find the insinuation that his 2nd injury call as a strategic decision to be unassuming at best and at least, condemning. And no, I have never met either wrestler.
