  1. First off I want to let everyone know I usually do not read threads on here and I just now signed up to be able to post because it sickens me to see these “likes” and comments! While I do not condone the issue of using plastics, I also do not know the full story on what recently took place at Carmel High School, nor do any of you! It makes me sad that I see such negative comments towards my high school coach, knowing he has done SO much for many programs and for the state of Indiana. I am not going to sit here and tell you that I have agreed with everything Coach P has done, there have been times we haven’t seen things eye to eye.....But I am not going to forget everything else he stands for and the many improvements he has brought to the wrestling community in Indiana. Nobody is perfect! We all make mistakes, some more public than others. It saddens me to see so many people that have reaped the benefits of his presence in wrestling get on this thread and bash him and “like” derogatory comments about him. Coaching isn’t easy and dealing with most parents does NOT make it fun. One of the fundamental rules I live my life by is “never kick a man when he is down”. I will put aside my thoughts and opinions and I CHOOSE to reach out and anyone who is down I try to help them rise again and become better! One bad decision does not define you!!! It is when you are down you will find your true friends, I am here for P. Writing thoughtless posts on message boards while hiding behind a keyboard is also a great way to burn bridges ..... something else I try very hard never to do! Leroy Vega

  4. Has nobody learned not to bash people (especially high school kids) until the whole story comes out? I’ve been searching for info most of the day but have only found one vague article and a bunch of people on here ready to execute them. It all seems strange to me because some of these duals were from early December. Who knew about these for most of the season and waited to report it until until the right before sectionals? By everyone’s comments here, that person also put all these kids’ lives in danger for a couple months for not reporting it sooner. The article I read did state that Carmel’s Athletic Dept self reported the violations to the IHSAA as soon as they learned of it. But there was no info on how they were told. I’m going to choose to wait on my judgement and what an appropriate punishment would be until more info comes to light.

  5. You know how all the cool kids wear those glitter clown pants for state? Guess we know what any Carmel kids might be sporting this year!! Too soon????

  6. I hear what you're saying jasonbk2 but I don't think it's fair to punish the kids. I think the adults need to step up in this case. If you're a kid in high school athletics, you do what your coach(s) tell you to do. You might have knowledge what you're being told isn't legal or fair, but you respect their authority and position, and your own position on the team, and do what you're told. It takes a unique kid to stand up to a coach, and ironically that might be what occurred here, although I suspect it was a parent. So I struggle with the life lesson that would be taught by not letting the kid wrestle when they were just following coaches orders, even if they knew it was wrong. The better life lesson might be for the adults to stand up, accept responsibility and self punish themselves. Yes, forfeiting wins is a punishment for the kid, but c'mon man, that's nothing in the big picture. Teach the kid what it means to be an adult and admit mistakes were made, offer restitution of some sort be it voluntarily sitting out the state series, 6 month off season hiatus (yeah, I know most coaches would think this is a treat not punishment), whatever is deemed appropriate and necessary. That would be the proper life lesson to teach a kid in my opinion...that as an adult, you stand up and take responsibility for mistakes. Tough deal, I know the Coach is held in high regard..but this is a pretty serious deal what with death occurring for this very thing decades ago. I would love to hear what @ClownBaby has to say about the issue. About time for him to come out and get the Audi washed for States anyway.

  7. So if no chang in seeds what lesson is learned. Hey go ahead cheat during the season nothing really happens to you. I feel sorry for the kids that are busting their ass doing it the right way. When you look at it seems like everyone is punished but Carmel. Those kids and coaches should be disqualified they know right from wrong and still chose to do it.

  8. These 106-lb brackets over the past 15 years often look unbelievable looking back. You've got a mostly freshmen weight, so those kids can start building accolades earlier than some other freshmen wrestling stronger kids. You're automatically isolating wrestling-focused kids who will have long-term success because you have to have put in the time in middle school and younger to compete at that level as a 9th grader. Finally, you're at a weight where most kids will also be wrestling-focused (and therefore probably highly skilled with great potential to keep winning) because they tend not to be big enough to achieve the same level of success at other sports. This weight really should be dubbed the "future stars" division because it's always chalk full of future champs and multiple-time placers.

  11. Why should any teams follow weight loss rules? If these kids or coaches aren't suspended, the IHSAA sets the precedent that nobody has to follow weight loss rules. Regardless of your thoughts on if they should/n't be allowed to wrestle, no punishment says that the "rules" are guidelines.

  12. Hey Uncle Jimmy! Ok here goes my thoughts on this and I’ll try my best to stick to what I KNOW as fact from my time with Coach P and Carmel Wrestling as best I can. First, please know I’m not in anyone’s inner circle and like Coach Vega said, I do not know any of the details other than what has been made public. I love wrestling and I love Carmel wrestling although I haven’t gotten to be part of it lately as much as I’d like. I’ve been to war WITH Coach P and FOR Coach P and I’m not going to abandon him now just cuz things are a little uncomfortable. Can he be a little stubborn? Yes. Can he be a little disorganized? YES. Can communication be a little frustrating with him from time to time? Hell yes! Can his shirt be a little too small as if it was his daughters before she outgrew it? Yes!!! Is he a cheater? NO! Not during my time there and I find it hard to believe that in the last three years that’s changed. Honestly, from my personal perspective the story doesn’t add up the way it’s being reported. When Clown Baby Jr. wrestled there, I asked specifically about sauna suits because I saw so many wrestlers using them in different programs and had no idea they were illegal. It’s something you can buy at Bloomingdales right off the shelf so why would I? You’d a thought I just walked across freshly disinfected wrestling mats with street shoes on. I was told absolutely not to put CBJ in one and not to bring it up again especially in front of parents who may be inclined to use them. I hate that this is happening right before the state tournament starts, it’s terrible timing not that there is a perfect time for it to happen. I would make a plea to anyone calling for the wrestlers involved to be disqualified from the state series to think about what happened to those kids last week in Washington DC. They’re kids and the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Also, it could easily be your kid or program going through this and I for one promise you I would feel the same as I do now and I would stand up for them too. Even if said kid was in CBJ’s weight class. I want to add also to what Coach Vega said about dealing with parents. I’m just going to put this out there, sometimes us parents can be huge assholes and very difficult to deal with. Unfortunately there’s a few who may be surprised to hear it and if so, you’re probably one of them. Can you imagine being a wrestling coach at any high school these days and dealing with the parents, the AD and the wrestlers and doing it for what they get paid? I’m out of line now but I’ll just say it takes a very special breed to do it and I appreciate every one of them. Wrestling Scholar - Where are you drinking in Carmel for only $20 a pop? I shudder at the idea, you should be drinking at least $40 drinks here. Is it black market basement booze? Never mind, I’ll have to take you out for a good $65 top shelf drink sometime. You too Uncle Jimmy.

For now though, he is living the dream.

    Brackets from the Past

Looking through the rankings and then some old State brackets and as I always do, found a strong past bracket I thought was worth mentioning. Titled it this way in case anyone else wants to add other brackets. 2016 - 106 Strong bracket with 14 of the 16 wrestlers qualifying for State at least one other time. This group at this point has amassed 27 total State Placements and 6 State Titles, led by..... Asa Garcia - 2 Titles Brayden Curtis - 2 Titles Hunter Watts - 1 Title Jacob Moran - 1 Title Ty Mills - 4x State Placer 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd 7 wrestlers will begin competing Saturday for one last chance to make it to Banker's Life and onto the podium. They are: Asa Garcia - #1 at 132 Jacob Moran - #1 at 113 Hunter Watts and Brayden Curtis - the top 2 challengers to Super Frosh Jesse Mendez at 126 Sammy Fair Lukasz Walendzak Devon Casebolt

  17. I’m pretty sure the so called sauna suits were “technically against the rules” even back in the 70’s when “everybody” was doing it. (Or so I was told at the time.) However, it was most generally overlooked kind of like driving a few miles over the speed limit. I think at least a lot of schools were openly handing them out as standard practice equipment. And I think they must have been recognized as being POTENTIALLY dangerous even then or they probably wouldn’t have already been “technically against the rules”. However, I think enforcement became more of a priority after some tragic events occurred (as has already been pointed out). Of course, those tragic events were brought on by some very severe and extreme abuses. Certainly, use of sauna suits can be potentially dangerous as are many rapid weight loss techniques. Sauna suits are against the rules and so should not be used. But if we are talking about potential risk and endangerment and not just about breaking rules, any method of losing large amount of weight rapidly through dehydration is fraught with equal risk. For certain, to be losing 10 pounds via dehydration in a week (or even weekly?) certainly isn’t healthy and can cause not only short term but long term health risks. So if we are castigating Carmel wrestling for breaking rules, okay. But if we are tsk-tsk-ing them for potentially endangering the wrestlers, I think perhaps a lot of people better be wary of their own glass houses.

  19. THE KIDS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO WRESTLE END OF STORY. IF THIS WAS A SMALL SCHOOL BOB COX WOULD OF SAID YOU ARE DONE, HE HAS DONE THIS STUFF BEFORE HE LIKE TO PLEASE ALL THE BIG SCHOOL NO MATTER WHAT BECAUSE THEY BRING IN THE MONEY FOR THE IHSAA. THE 8 WRESTLERS AND THE HEAD COACH SHOULD HAVE TO SIT OUT THE TOURNAMENT.

  20. Your right it would hurt the other wrestlers and Carmel wins again. Seems like no matter what they do it benefits Carmel. Its ridiculous wrestling is about actual wrestling and continuing it to life. No better life lesson then not letting them wrestle and teaching them you cant cheat your way through life.

Sounds self serving (because it is one of my athletes), but Kunkleman from HSE beat both Dorien Keys of Brownsburg and Alexander of FC at Conference last weekend and the top 13 remained unchanged with Kunkleman, whose losses were all months ago when he was in Football shape and two of the 5 are to #1 Watts, who outweighs him by 60 pounds, remains at #17.

  23. Not to make it a federal offense but... If I had a "decent" kid at say 145 (be it sectional/regional/SS/S) and he's going against the Carmel kid (again theoretical weight..could be any weight) and my kid gets taken out say in ticket round by the Carmel 145. If I was a coach I think I would want to look at the weight loss plan for the Carmel kid, no? What if one or more of his qualifying weigh ins, and more importantly his scratch one, came during the period when the #SuanaSuit was used? Seems to me that just wouldn't be right or fair, no? Maybe he doesn't make 145 without the aid of the illegal #SuanaSuit and thus should not have been entered in the 145lb class at all? I dunno...just seems we should be past this kind of issue nowadays.

  24. As a coach when doing seeding if you put a legitimate top kid lower you will hurt your kid more than you think will help them. Making them unseeded means they will draw into the top 1 or 2 seed early and thus "capturing" that seed and then knocking a top seed to the consolations earlier than expected.

  34. If so I guess it works to keep them at that weight since the proof is already there. But if the qualifying weigh-ins are not meet before I’d think a possible right/fair solution is to bump them up a weight class where it can be assured they would have made weight legally. I’m not a big proponent of kicking them out completely, but adhere to the same weight management guidelines they other wrestler are getting dinged for due only barely missing a small qualifying weight range. Sure re-adjust some of the weight class seeds if you want to make sure it doesn’t hurt the brackets integrity by having them draw into top seeds (yes I know that take awhile I’ve been to the meetings). But at least ensure qualifying weight is proven like other wrestlers/coaches have had to do since that’s such an emphasis by the IHSAA. It sounds like from another thread at least one kid was moved brackets likely due to a qualifying weigh-in issue, so logic would say treat this issue similarly.

  35. I've been a proponent of mat-side weigh-ins for several years now.
    1 point
  36. I posted this on another thread on Facebook recently, but we are wrestling newbies as a family. One thing I have never understood is the entire weigh-in process to begin with, moreso from an efficiency standpoint than any other reason...but if the sport was really serious about weight programs then this solution I thought about makes sense. If I ruled the world then everyone would weigh in mat-side. Have one of those old school scales set to the proper weight for that mat. Have each wrestler step on the scale when they are on-deck. If the scale goes to the fatso side (the side I am most familiar with) then sorry, you forfeit. If it stays on the skinny side, then get ready to wrestle. All the sudden the self-policing and wrestling at actual weight would become a lot more serious if not making weight EACH match was a concern. If kids had to cut and keep it off all tournament long then they would either wrestle like crap or feel awful, both of which should be de-motivators. But I know, I know..."THAT'S NOT HOW I DID IT! I WORE A SUIT UNDER A TRASH BAG WITH MY MULLET TUCKED IN THE BACK IN THE 80S AND I WAS TOUGH BECAUSE OF IT!!" I get it. Just seems like this scenario takes all gamesmanship out of it. I also realize it will never be adopted ever. Which has told me that any "guidelines" are moreso to satisfy lawyers than something most actual wrestling folks actually care about.

  42. So where's Fabio at? I hardly see him on the board anymore. Did he get a hot girlfriend that's consuming all of his time? Last year Fabio was the renaissance man on fire, and was doing everything. Among other things, he was the most coveted asst coach in state, Indianamat top administrator, #1 poster on Indianamat, small animal advocate, expert multi media integrated map maker, Indiana big match mat side announcer, most frequented Indianmat podcast expert guest, Hendricks county advocate, wrestling rules expert, Indiana history of wrestling go to expert, and also was doing his full time job whatever he makes a living at. This year we just get an occasional post. So my theory is he got a hot girlfriend and is monopolizing Fabio's spare time. HMMMMMM

  44. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com Jordan Slivka may not be the fastest wrestler in the state, the most powerful or the most dynamic – but, he just might have the most heart. “He’s probably the most mentally tough wrestler I’ve ever had,” Cathedral coach Sean McGinley said. “He loves the big matches. As coaches we ask ourselves who we want to have out there, down one going into the third period. I’d put Jordan Slivka in that spot over anyone.” Slivka, a senior for the Irish, showed just how much ice is in his veins in the state tournament last season. The Irish needed a win in the worst way if they were going to have a shot at winning the team state title. Slivka just told them to relax, he was going to win. That’s what he did. He claimed his first individual state championship by beating Yorktown’s Christian Hunt 1-0. That win also sealed Cathedral’s team state title. “Winning state felt amazing,” Slivka said. “I envisioned it before I won it. I told myself in the locker room before my match that I knew it was going to come down to my match. I said I was going to win it, and I knew that’s what I was going to do.” Slivka has made a career out of winning the close matches. In the state tournament Slivka is 16-3 in matches determined by three points or less. “I come out in each of my matches with a game plan,” Slivka said. “I don’t try to rush things and I don’t try to force points. I have the mentality that nobody can take me down, nobody can escape me and nobody can ride me. I’m confident that I own people on the mat.” This season Slivka has continued to shine in the close matches. Recently in a dual meet with Indianapolis Roncalli Slivka bumped up to 170 to face No. 5-ranked Elijan Mahan. In that match Slivka injured his ribs and had to take two injury time outs, but he didn’t want to quit. He eventually escaped with a 6-4 victory which helped lead the Irish to the team win as well. “He just gutted that win out,” McGinley said. “He was in a lot of pain. You really see his mental toughness in matches like that. As the seasons go on you just see how many of those close matches he wins, and you know he’s the guy you want out there in those situations.” Slivka also edged No. 7-ranked (160) Peyton Asbury and No. 5-ranked (160) Nathan Conley by 1-0 scores. He beat No. 3-ranked Brooks Davis 3-2 and No. 4 ranked Peyton Pruett 5-2. He did lose one close match this season, falling to Conley 3-2. Slivka started out in the Shenandoah school district. He went to Shenandoah until his freshman year. His dad was one of the coaches who helped turned that program around. His father, John, is a former state champion in Georgia. “My dad, in that Shenandoah room made sure we were all tough,” Slivka said. “One of the drills we had was we would get in our stance and dad would walk around a bunch and snap our necks down. We kept going long after we were tired. It taught me to be tough.” Slivka’s older brother, Johnny, was also a solid wrestler for the Raiders. Jordan even has a game plan for wrestling his older brother. “If we do takedowns, Johnny might beat me,” Jordan said. “But in a full match I have him now. He’s a little out of shape. The first and second period he might get me, but come the third, he’s mine.” Slivka is ranked No. 2 at 160 pounds behind Portage senior Donnell Washington. The two wrestled earlier in the season with Washington claiming the 8-3 victory. “I am 1 and 1 against him,” Slivka said. “He beat me this year and I beat him last year. I’ve taken losses before and have been able to come back from them. I hope this is no different.” Slivka’s goal this season is to win another state title. He admits it will be very hard to top last year’s title – with the team state championship being on the line as well. “I have no clue how you top that,” Slivka said. “Only thing I can think of is doing it again and scoring more points.” Next year Slivka will wrestle for Ohio University. “My plan is to be as good as I can be in college. It’s the next challenge. View full article
