  2. Fattore impressed me the most and it had nothing to do with his wrestling. This young man carried himself like a champion after a questionable call. Nicely done young man!

    Thank you

I just wanted to say thank you to the IHSAA, IHSWCA, all the workers and people who have ever had a hand in developing the state finals, and of course, the wrestlers who make the finals so entertaining. I have always loved the wrestling state finals, however, this year had a bigger impact on me. My son is now a 7th grader and wrestling for Greenfield Junior High School. As his father and Coach, I preach doing everything the right way. From his grades, to his character, to his wrestling...I constantly harp on doing them the right way. Watching my son listen to the introductions of so many incredible young men who not only excel on the mat, but in the classroom and as men of character, was priceless for me. I love that we celebrate these athletes the way we do for all to see. I know at least my son is watching! Coach Holden

  4. Absolutely. Not knowing him personally at all, he carried himself extremely well even when faced with that questionable call. I was also really impressed with the attitude of Sam Hansen of Roncalli. He seemed to be having the time of his life, and was very polite. I talked to him for a second after the finals and he was just a very gracious kid.

  5. I'd like to see some "Whatever happened to.... ?" articles. Past state champs or even guys that were close. Tell their story about the path they chose after HS wrestling ended, and also maybe what wrestling did for them later in life. Has to be lots of interesting stories out there

  8. This is called doing something to showcase the talent in our state and not caring about a jabroni running a fake national tournament. This event will be showcased and promoted on FloWrestling for the whole country to watch.

  9. My vote goes to Nick South. I knew nothing about him going into E'ville SS. He was extremely impressive that weekend & again at State as well. Beating Mappes in the finals two weeks in a row 3-2 then 9-6. Congats to Columbus East as a whole. They have always been a good program but really elevated to an elite level this year.

  10. Hearing some commitments and so far it's a Flo/Intermat/WrestlingUSA Senior ranking 4/3/1 vs. a state semi-finalist 1/1/1 vs. a state champ 3/3/2 vs. one of our #1's Once I get the okay to name names I'll start announcing match-ups

  11. Columbus East...I knew about the Rooks kids but man 5 guys in the semi finals and finishing with 2 champs! I was impressed just don't get to see that team anywhere during the season.

  12. What about a Getting to Know article/interview every so often? Find a random school, wrestler, coach, assistant and just ask to interview them? Whether it's video content or even an article, it might help their program get a little more recognition. I mean the people that frequent the board have an idea of what coaches are doing and how some of the top talent is doing, but what about some of the smaller schools or guys that seem to fly under the radar. Or even some video content of Team Indiana practices, road trips and tournaments, similar to that of what FloWrestling use to do. Always fun watching those.

  13. I like RWA parents and I like how kids go to RWA for extra practice and also like them going to Elite Athletic Club. It is good for them to get extra work extra coaching and more bodies to wrestle with.

  16. It’s been an honor to coach him, along with his fellow senior teammates in Mills, Mulkey, and Walton. I’ve learned tons from the fab 4 and can’t wait to see what they accomplish in college! They changed the atmosphere at Brownsburg for the sport of wrestling and while it will be sad to walk into the wrestling room without them the mark they made will last for years to come.

  21. They also have Penola coming in. Really looking forward to him getting better, he has a very high ceiling. They also have Emil Soehnlen from Ohio, actually the same school as David Carr, at 170. Soehnlen's a top ranked 170 lber and I believe top 50 overall. And lastly they Kendall Coleman from Mt Carmel (?) at 145, ranked pretty high.

  23. Three guys stood above the rest for me. 2 are obvious. B Lee and Parris had some great careers. Can't say enough about these studs. I'm excited to see what they can accomplish at the next level. KRIS RUMPH - super impressive. They just don't make raw athletes like that very often. Kid impressed me every match he wrestled and was the most entertaining guy to watch in the tourney.

  26. Another great dual win for Boilers, at Wisconsin. Actually an upset per say, with the rankings, but me thinks Purdue is not getting the attention that Wisconsin seems to command, in the rankings. So upset? No, just a continuing improving purdue team, beating a team they should beat in the BIG.

  29. Slika is very tough on top as evident in his 1-0 win over McIntosh in the quarter-finals. Not knowing the situation or strategy, Hunt was going to need a takedown to win no matter what most likely. If he goes on bottom, it will take a lot of effort and energy to get out. Maybe it takes 20 seconds, maybe it takes 1:59, maybe he doesn't get out. Even if he gets an escape he will still need a takedown to win and would have limited time in regulation to do that. With that said giving himself two minutes to get a takedown or maybe a couple stalling calls to tie it up is probably more likely than getting that escape and then only having a minute to get a takedown in the first overtime.

  33. What wrestler at state, that maybe you hadn't seen before, impressed you the most? I have watched most of these guys at some point or another. But, probably the one that stands out for me was Manzona Bryant. He was pretty fun to watch, and I think he'll be a force next season for sure.

Almost every takedown by Rumph... so quick and so smooth... Radar's trip is in the discussion as is all of BLee's takedowns (he just makes it all look so easy)

  38. Freshman year Friday night at state, he got taken down by future state champ Kleimola pretty quickly, before turning it on for an 18-5 win. Also, I’m sure a lot of people forget how close Gage Garpow was to beating him in the third place match. Garpow took him down a time or two and even put him on his back. Parris was down 10-6 and hit a 5-Point Peterson in the waning seconds.

  39. I do believe these are taped and played later, each separately. Looks like Iowa does a live broadcast of the finals. Best way they can show them all at the same time I imagine. On a side note, if they just went to ONE class, this would not be an issue, maybe they should just work harder at their broadcast.

    End of an Era

This state tournament marked an end to one of the finest eras in Indiana wrestling. I’ve been around this sport since 2011, have done extensive research and questioning on past eras, and closely followed the sport since my exposure to it, and I must say it has been one heck of a ride. Seven years may not seem long compared to many, but it’s long enough for an entire sport to transcend its bounds and give birth to a whole new style of itself as well. We went from predominantly solid technique and power based offense with clean finishes to funk and high-risk wrestling. We’ve seen our sport almost eliminated from the Olympic Games, and we’ve seen a resurgence. Honestly, we experienced a revolution. This revolution started thanks to websites like IndianaMat who made it their mission to grow wrestling in our state and make it easy and fun for fans to be connected to the sport. We saw one four-time state champion exit while another one entered. We saw the fireworks, the drama, the duals, and much like Kevin Whitehead said, we watched each other grow up. 2015, though, is the year I want to highlight. We saw the best mesh we’d get from arguably four great classes. Brownsburg became a name. Mason Parris became a name. We saw perennial powerhouses Cathedral, EMD, Penn, and PM slug it out for the title of the best program in the state. We saw perhaps one of the best state tournaments ever with loaded 113, 120, 132, 138, 170, 182, 220, and 285 brackets. We saw history and I will forever be grateful I got to witness it. Keep going, Indiana!

    End of an Era

Coming back Garcia- Top 10 guy after the seniors clear out Pokorney- Top 5 guy after the seniors clear out Curtis- Probably top 15 if not higher Moran- Top 10 guy if he continues to do well on the national scene Then add in guys like Rooks, Viduya, South, and so on and we have a good national representation. Also add in freshman sensation Jesse Mendez who will be in the national rankings talk as soon as he is officially a high schooler.

  47. I like how Eric McGill, one of the most consistent refs in the state, can't ref in the state tournament because of the system put in place. Votes and politics hold refs out that should be there. He Hits stalls/stalemates like they should be called. IMO he is the best. Dang the guy can ref D1 college meets but he isn't good enough to officiate our state tourney? There has to be a system to where the guys that are out of the game do not get put in place, I am sorry if anyone feels different but MAT 3 there were 2 bad calls that might have been the worse I have ever seen, Great job to Mulkey and Fattore, but both of them did not get the officiating that should be at the state finals. The consistency of calls was very bad, again IMO. I hate to see refs decide the match. Mulkeys match was based upon a judgement call that was terrible, and could not be reviewed, but Fattore match do we implement the replay at the state tourney to avoid these calls? Do we bring up a DANGER rule to where if a kid is on his back in danger the ref can let him know? What about the 2 second rule on the back, are we not implementing that anymore? It is over and in the past now, but I would hate to see this happen to more kids. To Mulkey and Fattore, I am truly sorry this happened to you guys. I know for a fact that your guys future is bright, hold your head high!
