  3. That was a wonderful article! Myself and everyone involved with HSE wrestling will be keeping Eric and Silas in our thoughts and prayers. What a tremendous amount of grit they have both shown. Everyone needs to read this. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Great article. Makes you rethink the ever popular Dan Gable quote, "Once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy." Sounds like wrestling might be one of the easier things Silas has experienced so far in his young life. Wishing nothing but the best for the Allred family. And major kudos, to the CIA group, Eppert, Gill and Ulmer for raising that amount of money to help their family out. Awesome of you guys to do that.

  11. Btw I can't Express how blessed I am to have a friend like @Perseverance aka Mr.Allred! He's made me realize the blessings I have are to be cherished and to be thankful for every day I wake up... 1 of the greatest men I've had the privilege of calling a friend and more like a brother the last few years.. and another reason that I'm thankful for wrestling not only did it save my life as a kid it also lead me to bonds with great human beings... and to all the love and generosity that's been sent Eric's way, it doesn't go unnoticed! Couldn't have happened to a better family.. The only thing more dangerous than a focused Silas Allred is a Silas carrying a heavy heart that's driven to make his father proud!

If I remember right, he bumped up a weight to try to win one for his team. Because... that’s what true champs do. He put his career undefeated record on the line for his team. Came up just short. That’s why the kid is even more awesome!

  15. Genuinely appreciate each of your encouraging words. I equally appreciate all who read the article, and just choose to pray and encourage personally. Collectively means a lot to us as a family. With full transparency....I can say that I fell in love with the sport of wrestling for reasons other than just my son. He was just the vehicle God used to lead me to it. In fact, in the beginning Silas was average at best. He was a chubby kid who had some natural gifts, but threw a nasty “lefty” headlock that resembled a Joe Frazier headshot. So yes....I was the “know nothing” over zealous dad in the corner yelling....”reach back and headlock him!” But I became absorbed with learning the sport. Only my scriptural studies took precedence over my wrestling research. And recognizing that attributes like self-sacrifice, humility, work ethic, commitment, perseverance, and above all accountability....were all factors in becoming truly elite at this sport. That resonated in me, because those were the same characteristics I had to embrace to transform a formerly very wayward lifestyle, and become the man/dad/soldier God created me to be. Silas and I’s bond is so deep ridden, because we have grown together. Both in the sport...as well as spiritually. The blessings of adversity....is that it breeds tremendous levels of persevering strength when approached with proper perspective. We don’t see problems....we see opportunities. And no disease, excuse, obstacle, or exterior setback will deter the true goal he and I both have dedicated our lives to. And that’s simply this.....Be a better version of yourself today than you were yesterday. That daily application will literally push you to new heights that have no plateaus. Because you’ll be in a continuous evolution of forward progress. So even during peaks in all facets of life....you’ll keep striving to move forward. Even if in small increments. This sport, the above attributes I mentioned....have prepared me for this wrestling match with ALS. Scripture tells us that “We don’t wrestle flesh and blood. But principalities, powers and spiritual wickedness in high places.” There’s even a wrestling match in the Old Testament where Jacob literally wrestled with God all night. He was left with a permanent limp. So translated....I won’t be an easy “out”. It’s not in my DNA, nor is it the spiritual man God has molded me into. I fully anticipate conquering this disease and being healed. But if God’s healing doesn’t come until I’m called home....I guarantee you, I won’t get stuck or tech’d. Even if I have to get pointed....I HAVE ALS, ALS doesn’t HAVE me. Thanks again for the prayerful support.

  16. I know cussing might be taboo here.. but damn! A common theme in the article was using this to impact others...I am impacted. I’m better for reading that articke. I know not @Perseverance .much like I don’t know many of you all, but we are a community to some degree, so my heart aches for him and family,. All I’ve seen is positivity and encouragement. May some of that energy be returned! Prayer said...

  19. I can see where you're coming from. Being stuck in the Frankfort Sectional which Clinton Central is in is a bear trap. You have 4 really big 4a schools and couple medium size schools followed with four small schools. You look at sectional placing and it pretty much follows school enrollment size with big schools dominating and little schools at the bottom. Its probably frustrating to see locals small schools close to you that you compete well with that get placed in the Peru, Twin Lakes, L Jeff , Crawfordsville sectionals, and they have markedly more success. I think when sectionals are drawn up, they're more concerned with lower mileage as compared to overall balance. To your point they could even things out more in sectionals but you're still restrained by the geography of the state. Just a quick fact, total enrollment of 10 teams at the Frankfort sectional was 16,646 and compare that to the 12 teams in the Twin Lakes sectional which had total enrollment of 6,104. I think you're making more of a class wrestling argument when you say small schools don't succeed because of post season success, Because most small schools eventually get caught up with the big schools at regional or SS. To disagree with Indy Sports Fan, I think the daunting affect of a Clinton Central or Rossville having to face Carmel or Hamilton Southeastern every year could be discouraging and ultimately could affect participation or effort. Experiencing failure is a good thing to learning and developing character, but kids are also smart and they know it when they face overwhelming odds. It can affect their effort and participation. It just doesn't come down to if we try harder, well end up winning.

    School Cancellation

No, it is only dependent upon the school being able to practice. It does not matter if they have school or not.

  21. Attica has a really nice little team for the sub 300 student Fountain County high school, with 5 qualifiers that include a couple hammers in Hargan and Douglass. However the draw certainly didn't do this crew favors, though Douglass it could be said had a relatively favorable draw in one of the weaker weights. I haven't got to see Hargan wrestle but regardless of the schedule it takes some skills to arrive undefeated in SS. But drawing Pack in the bloodround will certainly mean if he makes it to state he definitely earned it. Miller at 106 is the lone senior in the group and has a pair of 2nd place finishes this post season thanks to standout sophomore Jake Stall of McCutcheon by scores of 8-4 and 9-4. Unfortunately I think fellow small school warrior Jeffrey Bailey of River Forest will be too much for Miller in what figures to be a fantastic blood round match. 4 of the 5 Attica reps are seniors, with just junior 220 Clayton Kelley being the holdout. Kelley has a tough first round assignment in fellow junior Bobby Babcock of Hobart.

  23. Couple year's ago I brought up the idea of combining the Sectional and Regional Tourney into one tournament. I don't have the numbers in front of me, so don't nail me to exact details..... We have one of the largest regionals (most number of teams) and I'm thinking it's like 24ish teams. You'd have to have a round of 32 in theory....most weights have more than 8 ffts if you combine sectionals. That would be a quick round. Seed top 12 Friday night: Rat tail matches (I believe the number was around 10 matches total). Then have the round of 16 right after. If you lose any of those, you're done. Saturday morning run an 8 man tourney with wrestlebacks. When I looked at it I thought it would help with the ref shortage and make the state more money with less work. It would also shorten the season a week, which might get us in the conversation of semi state wrestle backs down the road.

  34. The Munster super dual was a 2 day tournament back then, and we hosted our own super dual.

  35. Absolutely it would. Taking 6-8 kids from our Sectional maybe with a Champ or 2 every year would absolutely help a program grow.

  36. I remember those good days. Had to document every match, because at the time Alex was chasing the record for most consecutive career wins. Just off my head, I know we went to the Valpo Super Duals, Munster Super Dual, Lake County which was a 2 day tournament, the LAC which had 15 team conference, Griffith Super duals, and then the state series, both individual and team. Not to mention the Harvest Classic, Penn Super Duals, and the 4 duals during the week. That year I believe the Andrea and Angel had 64, and were made because they drew a bye and Alex drew a forfeit at a tournament to get 65.

  37. Naturally successful postseason runs (at any level) will help a program, but unfortunately it is NOT possible to allow every athlete/program to have success. You do the best you can but you must realize that it will not be equal for all; that is impossible to achieve. I am sure wrestlers who lose because of a tough draw (Sectional, Regional or SS) know they could have easily advanced at a weaker venue but I guarantee it will help them in the long run. Experiencing failure is vital to achieve quality learning and growing into adulthood.

  39. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com A little brotherly love has fueled Westfield’s Carson Eldred to wrestling greatness. Eldred set a goal his freshman year to beat his older brother Evan’s school record for pins and career wins. “I asked Carson his freshman year what his career goals were going to be,” Westfield coach Phil Smith said. “We knew he was going to be pretty special. He said he wanted to beat his brother, Evan’s career pin record and wins record.” Carson broke the pins record at his school during the Mooresville tournament this season. He’s five wins away from the career wins record. “I told him after the tournament that he broke the record,” Smith said. He was like ‘uh, that’s cool.’ “ His reaction points to the type of person, and wrestler Eldred is. He doesn’t get emotional during the highs, or the lows. “He can keep a stone face no matter what,” Smith said. “You don’t know what he’s going to do out on the mat. Every time he wrestles, he wants to prove something. He always wants bonus points and falls. He doesn’t get too up or too down.” Eldred seeks perfection in everything he does. His grade point average is 4.15. He hasn’t missed a day of school in four years. He has never missed a wrestling practice. “He’s honestly the best wrestler I’ve coached,” Smith said. “He’s the most gifted wrestler I’ve had, without a doubt. He absolutely hates to lose. In everything we do he hates losing. It doesn’t matter if it’s sprints, drills, wrestling the coaches or anything else. He will do whatever it takes to win at any cost.” Currently Eldred is ranked No. 4 at 120 pounds. He is a sectional and regional champion and will take on Southport’s Khua Thang in the first round of the New Castle semistate on Saturday. He is 36-1 on the season with his lone loss coming at the hands of Cathedral’s No. 1-ranked Zeke Seltzer. Part of the reason behind Eldred’s success is his early training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His father owns a Jiu Jitsu training facility and he learned from a young age some of the keys of the sport. “Jiu-Jitsu helps with my movement in wrestling,” Carson said. “I haven’t done it much in a while, but when I was younger, I trained a lot with my family. It really helps you when you’re in uncomfortable positions. You don’t panic and you can find a way out of them.” Carson is most comfortable in scrambles. His unorthodox style makes him dangerous in any position. “He can ride anyone on top,” Smith said. “He scores a lot of his points from the top position. He’s a talented mat wrestler. He finds points from the bottom position as well and has some crazy reversals. He’s really refined his craft to be a great wrestler from any position.” After the high school season is over Eldred will likely not wrestle competitively again. He will attend Purdue University where he is a direct admit to the engineering program. “It’s going to be a little tough,” he said. “I’ve been wrestling since I was in kindergarten. It’s been a big part of my life. It will be a hard adjustment not interacting with teammates or getting a chance to wrestle in front of fans again and have people cheering for you. It will be different. But I’m excited to focus on my schooling as well.” For now though, the focus is on getting to that state championship match. “I’m just following in my brothers’ footsteps,” Eldred said. “They both (Dillon and Evan) made it to state. I want to outdo them.”
