  1. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I too call stalling in that situation. Over 20 seconds of holding a front headlock just riding out a one point lead is stalling, no matter what stage you’re on.

Good coaches will always fight for their kids. I would probably think a little less of a coach who didn't get kicked out in that situation.

  3. Fattore was spotted warming up with Rader before the finals. Not sure I have ever seen two guys that just wrestled in the semi-finals warm up with each other.

The front headlock should have been stalemated after 8-10 seconds max when neither wrestler was improving position. That would have left 10-14 seconds for the match to still be decided by the wrestlers. Unfortunately the official didn't call the stalemate and then compounded his mistake by making a more egregious one. Every year this guy makes numerous head scratching calls.

Agree. The question is, was he trying to improve his position. If he wasn't, it's stalling. Take everything else out of it. I watched it again. He made zero attempt to improve, and it wasn't being hindered by the other wrestler.

  6. I’m now a fan of Fattore...he handled that loss with class. He didn’t throw a fit or take off running to the locker room.

  7. Would you call that in the first period when a kid is riding out a 0-0 score? The situation or score doesn’t dictate when or how stalling should be called. If it’s stalling with :15 left in overtime, then it’s stalling in the first :30 seconds of the first period. It wasn’t stalling...it’s a stalemate. The same call he used in that situation multiple times in that match.

So what happens to the official for the poor call? At :22sec, Mulkey had a front head lock and was snapping it to the mat. Why call stalling at 3-4 seconds left when the hold never changed? Call it at :22 or :15 or :10.if you are going to call it. Don’t wait to call and insert yourself in the match. Best call there was a stalemate...neither could improve. Called stalemate every other front head in the match. I also get tired of seeing Faulkens insert himself at matside. 2x this weekend so far. You want to be there and make decisions at mat side, then pull the officials aside as well and make sure you tell them they screwed up as well. Seeing too many matches decided by the officials in the last 2-3 weeks. And no, I won’t sign up to become an official...just do it right.

The secret is out about Asa Garcia. To beat him at State, you have to let him win Sectional, Regional & SS! 2016 Sectional - 2nd Place Regional - 2nd Place Semi-State - 2nd Place (all losses to Mills) State - Champion 2017 Sectional - 1st Place Regional - 1st Place Semi-State - 1st Place State - 3rd Place 2018 Sectional - 2nd Place Regional - 2nd Place Semi-State - 2nd Place State - Champion The pattern has been set!

If you rewatch the match, he snaps him to the mat but doesn’t make any attempts to score off of it (i.e. get to a point where he could secure a takedown). The casebook shows an example were this could be called stalling: 6.4a: “Typical holds/maneuvers contributing to stalling in the neutral position are: a) Upper body tie-ups with no attempt to take down the opponent.” Per the rulebook, overtime is just the continuation of the match (rule 7-2) so normal rules would apply. The difference would take place in the ultimate tiebreaker. The offensive wrestler scores here by preventing the defensive wrestler from scoring. So riding a spiral ride with no attempt to breakdown or turn the opponent shouldn’t be penalized. The casebook does reference a similar situation for the stall call that would favor the Mulkey fans: 7.6.6 Situation B: “Should stalling be called in the following situations? A) In a neutral position, Wrestler A attempts a takedown and is stopped by Wrestler B who applies a legal front headlock. Wrestler B does not use the headlock to attempt to score a takedown but maintains the headlock....Ruling: In [this situation] Wrestler B has created a stalemate situation to avoid being scored upon. Repeating the same action to create a stalemate situation without using it in an attempt to score would be stalling on Wrestler B.” The question here would be did Mulkey snap Melloh into the headlock, or did he apply it in an attempt to defend a shot. If the later, than no stalling should be called per the ruling above (as it should have been called a stalemate the first time it happened). But if Mulkey initiates the front headlock, then I can see how a stall call could be argued. I also acknowledge that a simple stalemate could have been called as well.

  16. How about this idea. Maybe coaches could give some justice, and vote Fattore for mental attitude award. Not sure what defines mental attitude, but this kid has worked his butt off, and came up with the boggest screw, but he still showed great sportsmanship. He really deserves it over anybody.

No ones is talking about it but I thought this was the best match of the night. They really went at it and left it on the mat. I want to say congratulations to Conner for getting it done when most people thought that Nathan was the favorite. Great match guys.

  20. For the last year nine years I have spent a Sunday morning in February drinking coffee by the pool and watching the State Finals from 12 time zones away here in SE Asia. Of course I have always enjoyed Coach Goebel's commentary, and with the addition of Blake Mauer, this year's broadcast was the best ever. It was great to get some "new school" perspective, and I hope they bring him back next year. Anyway, thanks to the IHSAA, Coach Goebel, and Coach Mauer for keeping us displaced Hoosiers in the game . I sure don't miss Indiana weather in February, but I do miss the heck out of that tournament. Cheers.

  25. You’re gonna be hard-pressed to find three kids who are all as awesome on the mat, awesome in the classroom, and awesome in character. Very proud of these three, have loved watching them all the last few years. I know both of the Gimsons are unsatisfied with their placement, but that’ll just fuel them for next year. In the mean time, let’s bring Jimtown its third state champion tonight, Hunter!

I think he’ll regret it. Yes, his wrestler got shafted....yes it potentially cost him a state title etc. look ok at how Fattore handled the loss.. now, Brownsburg is without their head coach when their team is fighting for a state title and could use his coaching. When life isn’t fair, you keep your head up and move forward. Disclaimer- I haven’t watched one wrestling match in person this year so I’m not even on the level of a keyboard coach. And I think he’s a great coach and one of the best Indiana has ever seen. Nothing but respect for him.

  27. I'm not arguing for or against and am trying to see it from both sides and present all. But I can tell you as a former baseball umpire, there are many times you don't make calls that are "technically" right and are taught that way. I've never refereed wrestling so I would have to defer that to others, but referees in general study. They look at situations and evaluate how they were called, could have been called and in some circumstances should have been called. Even then, you will never get 100% agreement, because so much of it is judgement. So I can't say whether that was the right call for that moment. Trying to extrapolate from my umpiring days, my gut says, don't make that call unless there is a bit longer, but we're splitting seconds here.

Which is true but I don't think it's right that yoy pay for services and a majority of the time they are lack luster...15 bibs isn't nothing compared to paying for going to bankers life.. but 15 bucks is pay that i worked damn hard for and I expect quality.

    B Lee class act

This- get over yourself a little bit bud. The opponent he was wrestling got up from a leg Turk after the first period and didn’t like the fact he had an arm across his throat giving up near fall for about 30 seconds in the match. Gets up- acts CLASSLESS himself by getting in Lee’s face and talks/shoves Brayton - that set off the chipness in the match. If you are going to “poke the bear” so to speak...gotta be ready for the repercussions. I saw nothing wrong with the knee breaker seeing as how the Portage kid acted

I should probably just let it be and move on, but the smart ass in me just isn’t letting that happen. Nobody is making fun of Andrew, as a person or a wrestler. He was rolling all around for a majority of the match, I assume many others were like me and thought it was awesome that he kept trying it. Showed confidence and against almost any other 113 it would work. Relax a bit, man. You’re taking something that isn’t a personal attack at all as a personal attack.

  35. Guys it’s OK to insult his refereeing skills. You could say it was a horrible call. It is your opinion to say he’s the worst referee ever. You could even say that he should be banned from refereeing. But to assault the mans character something altogether different. effectively you’re calling him a cheater.

  40. Horrible situation. By looking at the video angle the official realized he's in danger and moves to position. The situation barely changes but he never leaves the pinning zone. From the time the situation started, official reacted, and slap of the mat, according to my stopwatch it was past 2 seconds. Let me be clear... No official ever wants to make that call, especially in the State Semi-Finals. But as officials we can't inject our feelings. Sadly he did pin himself. Note: As an official I'll speak up if I think it was called correctly if I happen to be looking at the forums. If I disagree with a call you won't see me tough the conversation with a 10 foot pole. You've gotta understand that!

  43. Coach Snyder is a Bulldog, in more ways than one. I’m certain he knew the ramifications not only for Blake, but for the team. It was a bad call, and if all is true above, it was a poor job mat assignment. I’m not questioning the integrity of the ref, as I don’t know him, but if he has a connection to the kid or the program, he should not have been on that mat. Sometimes familiarity and human nature can unintentionally override judgement. That’s a stalemate all day, about 10 seconds earlier.

  47. I am having the same issue. I was wandering how close this call was. I will say, I see a lot of folks on here calling out officials today. I was fortunate enough to advance my career past high school and wrestled Divison III for 4 years. After that, I was lucky enough to get as an assistant coach with a program with an experienced high school coach. There we sent multiple kids to the state tournament and I was privileged to coach under the spot light. I got out of coaching and made the leap into officiating leap this past fall. I passed he took the certification test with 98 %, spent about 10-12 hours in class with experienced officials going over the rules and interpretations before the season started. I’ve read and reread through the rule book and case book, annotating each page. I search YouTube and FloWrestling for tough calls and try to figure out my rational for how I would call it. I’ve attended every official association meeting where we discussed some of the tricky situations we’ve seen and participated in countless debates about how the rules are interpreted and applied. I thought I was ready to be a great official. Guess what...it is very hard. I’ve blown some calls this year. All the preparation, decades of competition and coaching, and a dedication doesn’t make me a perfect official. I don’t diserve to be out there with a whistle today. I haven’t earned it yet. The guys that are officiating today are Indiana’s best. They have decades of reffing experience and know the rules better than 99.9 % of the coaches, wrestlers and fans. They aren’t perfect, but they are the best we have. Officials don’t want to be part of the match. They want to award points, raise some hands, prevent any injuries and get back home to their families. Matches at this level are tough to call. Rewrestle the 138 pound semi finals 3 more times and I bet you’d come up with atleast 2 more different results. Cut these guys some slack and thank them for their hard work, dedication, and willingness to step out there and make the tough calls that only a small number of people are qualified to make.
