    The Mendez effect

Ladies and Gentleman, this fight is 3 rounds in the Indianamat Fantasy Fighting Championship’s Heavyweight division... Introducing first, out of the blue corner, a legendary mma star - holding a professional record of 1 zillion wins to only 1 defeat.. standing at 5’9” tall, 210 pounds. FIGHTING out of his parents basement and reliving his glory days via high school wrestling message boards - FCFIGHTER. And now introducing his opponent, FIGHTING out of the red corner. An ancient eastern Asian martial arts master, standing at 6’0” 225 pounds. The REIGNING, DEFENDING WORLD WANG CHUN CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, GENHEAVYHANDS!!! (crowd goes wild as lights and cameras focus on the imaginary octagon in the imaginary arena)

Not sure if it will play but can be googled if not... Good on Coach Harper @crosstownrivals and the entire penn program. Glad my son went thru the program. Special appearance by ref Troy! LOL...why is there a pic of @Y2CJ41 in the Penn wrestling room (about 30 second mark)? I shall have that taken down next time I'm there...

  5. Less schools for 1A and 2A would not make for a better tournament. The fluctuation of improvement or a team getting worse is much higher in the smaller schools than the schools in 3A and now 4A. Look at this year for 2A, Bellmont and Garrett both were voted in and were the top 2 teams. The scoring formula does a great job, but it isn't perfect and there are still discrepancies on knowing the future of a team. Keeping the smaller classes at 12 teams allows for the tournament to be more competitive and allows those bubble teams due to formula scoring a fighting chance.

  9. Flowrestling's mid-season awards article posted today. Their Coach of the Year pick? Tony Ersland, Purdue. They had this to say: While things like the Hodge and Freshman of the Year are a little easier in March because we have the final NCAA results, something like Coach of the Year is a little less straightforward. There are several ways to look at it, from giving it to the coach of the title team to a guy earning it for an unexpected team trophy or first national champ, as well as factoring in dual performance and how a program improves throughout the year. There's no question Tom Brands would be a justified choice if Iowa wins its first national title in a decade, and on the other side if Penn State overcomes their bevy of injuries Cael Sanderson could be a wise choice. Wisconsin's first team trophy since 2010 would likely get Chris Bono some discussion and likely be the result of Tristan Moran going from preseason #11 to high All-American, plus a Seth Gross national title after transferring in. But right now I'm looking at some other coaches in the Big Ten in Tony Ersland of Purdue and Matt Storniolo of Northwestern. Right now Ersland has the edge there due to the Boilermakers' 21-13 win over the Wildcats in Evanston, though Sebastian Rivera and Yahya Thomas both missed that dual. Purdue started the year unranked and is up to #10 in our tournament rankings, while Northwestern went up from 16th to 8th. Similarly Virginia Tech has climbed from 18th to start the year to #11 now, and that's without the services of NCAA champ Mekhi Lewis while also suffering season ending injuries to Korbin Myers and Brent Moore. They're second in our dual rankings and begin their ACC schedule this Friday against North Carolina. We should also mention Mark Manning after Nebraska won CKLV and Chris Ayres taking Princeton from 15th in the preseason to #8 right now. Coach of the Year is also tricky because it singles out the head coach for something that also includes the work of his assistants and the accomplishments of their athletes. While Sanderson and Brands are tremendous coaches, I'm more partial to the somewhat backhanded description of "most with the least," and to this point in January that is Ersland. He's taken Devin Schroder from 12 to 6, Kendall Coleman from unranked to sixth, Dylan Lydy up eight spots to #4, and Christian Brunner jumping five spots up to fifth. Finalists: Tony Ersland, Matt Storniolo, Tony Robie

  22. Levitz & Fielden are strong selections as possibles. I personally feel a healthy Mason Winner has a realistic shot. Walker being a heavy favorite, and not counting out any other top 182’s, but I think Winner wants to prove something. Another intriguing kid is Cale Gray at 220. His strength, athleticism, yet ability to wrestle small.....will prove formidable against anyone in that weight class. I feel this kid is a little slept on despite his strong state ranking.

  24. Even if that mentality is outdated in the mainstream, I don’t think it is ineffective. Quite the contrary. It definitely leads to success. I am not speaking in terms of wrestling, as I am no expert in wrestling. I am speaking in terms of life. And this mentality is the reason I have my kids wrestle. Of all the sports I participated in as a kid, wrestling taught me the most. And it taught me the “mentality” that you’re referring to—that pushing yourself to the extreme gave you an edge over the competition and made you realize that your limits are far beyond what you think. That is invaluable in all aspects of life. With that said, I would struggle being a coach because I would be hesitant to push other people’s kids the way I push my own. And that is because of the change in society as a whole doesn’t fit with my mentality. My favorite coaches of my sons’ are the ones that don’t give a hoot about the changes in society and say and do things I would not if I were in their place.

  31. Ok, so now it begs the question. If 1A, 2A, and 3A all have around 80 schools in them, why does 1A and 2A get 12 and 3A 8? All the arguments you made for that being good for those programs remains the same for 3A. I know why you all are fighting to have more in those classes, it benefits YOUR team, I get it. But having 8 in each division is fair and makes for a better tourney.

  34. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com Guerin Catholic has had a wrestling program for 15 years. Senior Jeff Dunasky is hoping to finally give the program its first state qualifier. Dunasky has already accomplished many firsts for the Golden Eagles. He’s the first sectional champion the school has had in wrestling. He’s the first two-time sectional champion. He’s the first Circle City Conference champion. But, being the first state qualifier would be the icing on the cake for the Guerin senior. “I want to do something nobody else has ever done from our school,” Dunasky said. “It would mean so much to me. It would be the reward for all the hard work I’ve put in. All the weight cutting. All the grinding out of hard tournaments. But it wouldn’t just be for me. It would be an accomplishment for my coaches and my practice partners as well. It would be something for the whole school.” Last season Dunasky fell just short of earning a trip to Banker’s Life Fieldhouse for the state finals. He lost in the ticket round of the New Castle semistate to Warren Central’s Antwaun Graves. “Last year when Jeff lost in the ticket round, the next Monday he was back in the room hungry to get better,” Guerin coach Andrew Fleenor said. “We watched the state finals the next week and then he wrestled at the Indy Nationals that next weekend. He went everywhere during the offseason. He made Team Indiana. He went to Fargo. He did the Disney Duals. He wrestled several places with the Indiana Outlaws. We were in Brownsburg’s room quite a bit. He trained a lot at Carmel USA with Coach Pendoski. He pushed himself to get better.” On the mat Dunasky likes to push the pace. He is a takedown artist and has great conditioning. That has helped him climb to the No. 9 spot in the 145 rankings this season. “He’s quick,” Fleenor said. “He pushes the pace. He has over 500 takedowns in four years. He’s really good on his feet.” Dunasky agrees with his coach’s assessment. “I would describe myself as fast-paced and a little bit funky,” Dunasky said. “I am comfortable in awkward situations and I like to use that to my advantage. I go hard and enjoy pushing the pace.” Dunasky’s favorite wrestling moment in his career so far was winning his first sectional title two years ago. “That was our school’s first sectional title,” Dunasky said. “It was a big moment for us. It was very memorable. I had people in the school and in the community congratulating me and saying they were proud of me. That really fired me up to get better. I feel like positive reinforcement leads to positive results. That’s why I really started pushing myself even harder.” In the wrestling room Dunasky often times acts as another coach in the room, helping the younger wrestlers understand moves and wrestling philosophy. “He definitely fills the leadership role on our team,” Fleenor said. “It’s like having another coach in the room. The team follows his lead, for sure. Without a doubt he sets the tone for our team.” In addition to chasing the dream of being a state qualifier, Dunasky wants to leave his legacy at Guerin Catholic. He says his faith is the most important thing, but he also wants people to know that hard work can pay off. “Jeff will be the most decorated wrestler to ever come through our program,” Fleenor said. “He will leave a legacy that other kids will strive for. He’s 114-32. He’s a two-time section champ, three time regional qualifier, two-time semistate qualifier. He won the Mooresville Holiday tournament twice. He’s our first ever conference champion and he won the Robert Porter Invite in Chicago this year.” Off the mat Dunasky likes to dabble in many things. He enjoys playing video games, rock climbing and even ice skating. “There are a lot of things to life outside of wrestling and I like to explore all those things,” he said. When it comes to his future, he plans on going to college although he’s not certain if he will wrestle or not. He does want to stay involved in the sport. Like is the case with his hobbies, he also has several interests for his possible career. He has considered agriculture, criminal law or even something in technology. “I have a lot of interests and it’s really hard to narrow those down. View full article

Kendall Coleman also finished 4th IU was also in the Midlands, finishing 17th in the team race. Donnell Washington placed 5th at 174, Jacob Covaciu finished 6th at 174 and Brock Hudkins placed 6th at 125.

  47. How on earth did he get enough qualifying weigh ins while dropping 15 lbs? We got hosed from kids trying to drop from 160 to 152. or 132-126 or even 113-106 (all moves made before the 1st.) Heck even the kid who went 138 all year is still having issues. IMO the new weight system is crap, just the IHSAA running the sport into the ground.
