  4. Western Indiana Conference Schools: Brown County, Cascade, Cloverdale, Edgewood, Greencastle, Indian Creek, North Putnam, Northview, Owen Valley, South Putnam, Sullivan, West Vigo 106# Top 4 seeds (in order) Noah Gardner, Edgewood ; Preston Fox, Cascade ; Mark Roberts, Greencastle ; Josh Scaggs, Sullivan Junior, Noah Gardner (ranked #17) seems to be the man to beat in this weight class. Freshman, Preston Fox and Sophomore, Mark Roberts should battle it out in the semi-finals for chance to face Gardner in the finals. 113# Top 4 seeds (in order) Logan Carrington, Greencastle ; Tucker Kirkhoff, Owen Valley ; Keith Holder, West Vigo ; Bradley Stewart, Edgewood Freshman, Logan Carrington and Junior, Bradley Stewart should meet in one semi-final & Freshman, Tucker Kirkhoff and Freshman, Keith Holder in the other. Carrington and Kirkhoff should meet in the finals. Carrington and Kirkhoff met earlier this year with Carrington getting the upper hand, can he do it again? 120# Top 4 seeds (in order) Jay Orman, Edgewood ; Johnathan Otte, West Vigo ; Braeden Wharton, Northview ; Jacob Fox, Greencastle Sophomore, Jay Orman should meet Freshman, Jacob Fox in the semi-finals. Freshman Johnathon Otte and Freshman Braeden Wharton should meet in the other semi-final. Otte and Wharton faced off in early December, Otte came out on top then. Orman and Otte should be in the Finals. 126# Top 4 seeds (in order) Seth Rorhbach, West Vigo ; Zach Lane, Edgewood ; Jacob Baker, Greencastle ; Kenneth Eason, Brown County Sophomores, Seth Rorhbach & Kenneth Eason should be in the semis on the top side of the bracket, but Eason shouldn’t look past Cloverdale, Freshman Jordan Opiela. Senior, Zach Lane and Sophomore, Jacob Baker should meet on the bottom side, to battle it out for a chance to meet Rorhbach in the finals. Rorhbach and Lane in the finals should be a great match and I expect it to be a toss-up. 132# Top 4 seeds (in order) Zach Tussey, Owen Valley ; Zane Sullivan, Edgewood ; Owen Sego, Indian Creek ; Cauy Thomas, Greencastle NONE of the ten wrestlers in this bracket have a losing record. Senior, Zach Tussey and Junior, Cauy Thomas should meet in one semi-final for the chance to meet the winner the other semi-final of Senior, Zane Sullivan (ranked #15) and Sophomore, Owen Sego. Both Semi-Finals and the finals should be AWESOME. The winner of this bracket, should earn #1 seed next week at sectionals when most of the meet each other again. I’m bias in the weight class, so I’m not making any predictions. 138# Top 4 seeds (in order) Brad Trietsch, Indian Creek ; Brach Carrington, Greencastle ; Jarrel Sholar, West Vigo ; Tyler Paul, North View Trietsch is having a phenomenal Senior season and should meet the winner of the Freshman matchup of Brach Carrington and Jarrel Sholar in the finals. I think the Senior will to much for either Freshman. 145# Top 4 seeds (in order) Austin Heckman, Edgewood ; Gabe Pitzulo, Indian Creek ; Brandon Smith, Sullivan ; Austin Hudson, Cascade Juniors Austin Heckham & Gabe Pitzulo should square off in the finals after defeating Seniors, Austin Hudson and Brandon Smith in the Semi’s. The Heckham / Pitzulo mtch should be a great. Who will come out on top? 152# Top 4 seeds (in order) Jacob Scott, North Putnam ; Blake Willis, Cloverdale ; Bryce Woods, Indian Creek ; Wesley Gates, Cascade On the top of the bracket Senior, Jacob Scott should face Senior, Wesley Gates. Gates will have to get past Sophomore, Anthony Rubbinacci first. The bottom of the bracket Senior, Blake Willis and Junior, Bryce Woods should square off. Scott is the favorite, but will the winner of Willis \ Woods have enough to get past him in the finals? 160# Top 4 seeds (in order) Trace Thomas, Greencastle ; Briar Sollars, West Vigo ; Noah Minor, Northview ; Alex Tran, Indian Creek. Junior, Trace Thomas and Senior, Alex Tran should face in one semi-final and Senior, Briar Sollars and Sophomore, Noah Minor in the other, with Sollars winning the last time these two met. I expect a Thomas / Sollars final, but don’t sleep on Minor. 170# Top 4 seeds (in order) Wes Bedwell, Sullivan ; Dillon Binnion, North Putnam ; Dalton Butler, Cascade ; Matt Archer, Edgewood Senior, Matt Bedwell and Sophomore, Matt Archer face off one side and Senior, Dillon Binnion and Junior, Dalton Butler on the other. Anyone of these four can take this weight class, who wants it the most? 182# Top 4 seeds (in order) Cade Winslow, Greencastle ; Tony Hall, Indian Creek ; Reuben Edwards, North Putnam ; Bryce Bault, Owen Valley Junior, Bryce Bault will have to get past follow Junior, Steven Denny on his way semi-finals to meet Senior, Cade Winslow. Junior, Tony Hall and Senior, Reuben Edwards should meet in the other semi-final. Winslow and Hall should advance to the finals, where anything can happen. 195# Top 4 seeds (in order) Grant Goforth, Indian Creek ; Levi Mullins, Brown County ; Nicholas Theis, South Putnam ; Matt McVey, West Vigo Senior, Grant Goforth (ranked #5) is should come out on top in this bracket. He should see Junior, Matt McVey in the semi-finals and Senior, Levi Mullins in the finals. Goforth and Mullins have wrestled twice this year already, Goforth coming away with major decision wins both times. 220# Top 4 seeds (in order) Kenton William, Sullivan ; Austin Stockall, Greencastle ; Kole Williams, Edgewood ; Tanner Louk, North Putnam. Sophomores Kenton Williams and Austin Stockall should meet in the finals. Willimas will will have to get past Junior, Tanner Louk and Stockall will have to get past Junior, Kole Williams, neither of which will be an easy task. Anything can happen at 220. 285# Top 4 seeds (in order) Jordan Headdy, Edgewood ; Ethan Vinardi, West Vigo ; Cameron Elmore, Indian Creek ; Darnell Bennett, South Putnam. Senior, Jordan Headdy and Junior, Darnell Bennett should fight it out for a spot in the finals. As should Senior, Ethan Vinardi and Sophomore, Cameron Elmore. Elmore will have to get past, Senior, Dalton Will first. We should see a Headdy / Elmore final, but a “fat man” roll can shake-up this weight class. The team race should be between teams, Greencastle, Edgewood and Indian Creek. Both Greencastle and Edgewood have nine wrestlers seeded 1-4 and Indian Creek is close behind with eight wrestlers seeded 1-4. Edgewood holds the lead with four #1 seeds and Greencastle with three #1’s and Indian Creek with two #1’s. This tournament will be won (or lost) in the wrestle-back. Which team has the most guys fight their way back to be on the podium?

  5. this thread started out to basically be a way for everyone to say thank you to MattyB, TeamGarcia & JMILL in a round a bout way and now it has turned in to a real "S"-show with Y2 putting restrictions on who can get into the HOF (no "#'s" or people on "time outs"). Like most things this thread has been killed by non-sense. I mean come on a place that wants to keep my guy TripleB out is a place I just don't wanna know exists !!!! side note..........OTR219 your still my boy !!! #TheCounty #PainTrain

    New Uniforms

Change is hard for most at first, especially in this state. (Think, we almost have alcohol sales on Sundays coming) I was unsure how I would like the two piece uniforms. Our team does not have any, and I've only seen a handful of teams this season that is sporting them. After one season, there really isn't going to be enough data to see how it effects participation in the sport. But if this is something that is going to benefit the sport than I completely support it. It's not 1970 anymore, times have changed, kids have been raised differently (not a good thing), and the fan base is constantly changing. Whether a kid is wrestling in shorts, or a singlet...it's still wrestling.

    New Uniforms

I realize this is probably due to multiple state titles, but participation at the 2 Brownsburg Middle Schools is up considerably. This year the 2 piece was "marketed" to all the boys and the wrestling team at one of the middle schools is double it's size compared to last year. I think it makes a huge difference, especially to middle-schoolers that are good athletes but did not grow up in the sport...and the idea of the singlet is pretty intimidating at that age. There's a whole lot of newbies in the room now and I have to think the 2 piece uniform plays some part in their decision.

  25. Available on BTN+ ($9.95 team subscription or $14.95 all teams) or FloWrestling (subscription required) Lots of IN kids should go tonight. Likely from Purdue - Luke Welch #12 @ 125, Dylan Lydy #12 @174, Kobe Woods @ 197 & Shawn Streck @ 285. The meet also features the first appearance at home for Nick Lee, who came out of redshirt status last weekend and enters the rankings this week at #7 on Intermat and #8 on Flo. Nick is 16-3 on the year including his unattached schedule. He has scored bonus points in all but one win. He'll face Nate Limmex who defeated Chad Red last week. I know comparative scores aren't reliable, but you can bet many will be watching to see how Nick does against him. Below is an article from a PA paper on Nick with quotes from Greg Schaefer and Matt Coughlin. It's a nice piece with only one error in the year he won State in IN. 145 should be a good battle. Redd, Humbert, and Otto!! Redd is a SQ and is the #3seed. He will wrestle Otto #2 seed in the semifinals. Otto beat Redd 11-3 at the begining of the season. Humbert #1 seed has a win over Otto 4-3. Redd with a Fall over Humbert. Green could cause Humbert some trouble, depends what Green shows up to wrestle. 132 Negandgard Vs Boogs should be a fight 138 Wolf Vs Walton should be good also!

In this sense, this change is progress. It’s progress in trying to up the participation and widening the comfort zone. Whether it’s liked or not, times are changing and in order to keep up, things such as the two-piece are introduced in order to progress our sport. Just my 2 cents

    Qualified Weigh-ins

Really confused after seeing all of the responses regarding 1 1/2% per week rule and weight management program. So are we all saying that the 1 1/2% rule is merely a suggestion? I get that everyone on here would agree that most high school wrestlers will fluctuate and gain much more than that after they weigh in and then taper back down to weight before their next weigh in. Wrestler weighs in at 144.8 to wrestle 145. Immediately after weigh in he eats and rehydrates himself, competes on Saturday and eats everything in sight on Sunday only to enter his wrestling room on Monday 6-12 lbs over, then spends the week to get back down to weight where he will weigh in once again somewhere an ounce or two below 145. No disagreement...it happens all of the time, but in every aspect of the rule is perfectly legal. But here are two examples of why the rule is in place for fairness of competition as well as health of individual wrestler? 1. On two occasions we have bumped some guys in our lineup to "wrestle up". First time was vs Lakeshore (home team Michigan weights) In many weight classes we gave up weight because we factored the legal weight following the 1 1/2% rule. For example we bumped our 106 to wrestle their 112 lber. To stay within rule for our next weigh in our 106 could weigh 107.59 to wrestle their 112. Our 132 could weigh in at 133.98 or less to wrestle their 140 lber. By calculating the max weight loss according to 1 1/2% rule we stayed within the rule as it was intended. Were we right or wrong? If we had not done that would it have been a "qualifying" weigh in according to rule? 2. Little Johnny (hypothetical) has had trouble making weight so everyone says screw it and Little Johnny wrestles 120 at a Holiday tournament weighing in at 118.5. Two weeks later Little Johhny shows up at the weight he has been struggling to hit which is 106!! I don't know if Little Johnny has a "scratch" weigh in at this weight or not, but if he has spent the first part of the season one or two weights up....would any of his weigh ins be "qualified"? Second part of the question...according to rule is he legal to wrestle 106 at sectionals with documented weigh ins 12+ lbs and 14 days apart? Intent is not to point out any specific deviations with any other individual or team but to merely understand the rule more clearly as it pertains to the proper interpretation for our team to follow as intended. Thanks for your input/comments.

    Favorite Excuses

We had a kid burn his mom's house down and he was arrested so he didn't make it to practice. Head coach still tries to convince me it was my fault because i moved practice time ahead an hour (Christmas break morning practice) and he didn't want to get out of bed so he started the house on fire. Seriously.

    Qualified Weigh-ins

    1. A person's weight can fluctuate by 5+lbs a day, which is much greater than the weight allowed to lose per week. 2. Most kids will lose 2-6lbs in a standard practice, again more than they are allowed to lose in a week. 3. I promise you most kids routinely lose more than 1.5% when they start the week.

  48. Wow, that is just terrible. With his lineage and AAU success, he is the one of the primary wrestlers that shepherded in the modern era of Indiana Wrestling that we can be thankful for today. His success at Delta, love them or hate them, raised the bar of the state tournament excitement giving you guys like Ginther, etc. Guys like Palmer brought the wrestling year round mantra to the forefront. He was the equivalent then, of today's Andrew Howe. World Champ, beast, made it out of Indiana to the highest stage in Oklahoma, but had some injury issues that hampered him. That, and having Mark Schultz and Dan Chaid in the room at OU. If the IHSAA or Coaches assocation doesn't do an award after this man, it would be criminal. Cancer sucks.

  49. By JEREMY HINES thehines7@gmail.com If Asa Garcia ever needed a nickname, perhaps The Fireman would be the most fitting. Sure, the Avon junior’s favorite wrestling move is the fireman’s carry - but that’s not the only reason for the nickname. Firemen are some of the bravest men on the planet. While most sane people run in the opposite direction of a fire, firefighters run towards it. Garcia is one of those that run toward the fire. A perfect example of this came a few weeks ago when Avon competed in the team state tournament. Garcia knew that he would have a gauntlet of top tier opponents in his path. He couldn’t wait for the challenge. Garcia, the top ranked wrestler in an absolutely stacked 126 pound class this year, beat two returning state champions and a fourth place finisher in team state. He dropped last year’s 120 pound champ, Cayden Rooks (now ranked No. 2 at 126 pounds) 3-1. He beat last year’s 113 pound champ Alec Viduya (ranked No. 3 at 126) 7-5 and he also knocked off fifth ranked Colin Poynter, who finished fourth at 120 last year, 3-2. “Asa was excited for the opportunity to get so many good matches at team state,” Avon coach Zach Errett said. “He was really looking at it as an opportunity more than anything. He knew he was going to get to wrestle and compete with some of the best kids in the state. That’s who he is. He looks to compete, always. I enjoy that about him. He wants to wrestle the best people.” Garcia said he approached team state with the mentality that it was going to make him a better wrestler, no matter what happened. “I knew the tournament would be tough,” Garcia said. “I’ve beaten those guys before, but I’ve also taken my lumps to some of them. You don’t know how well you’ll perform until you get out there and do it. Right now, wins and losses don’t matter anyway. If I took a loss or two, it wouldn’t have affected me. At the end of the day, the state tournament is when it really matters. Everything up until that point is practice.” Garcia won state as a freshman at 106 pounds. He came into that tournament with six losses, but emerged as the champ after pinning Warren Central senior Keyuan Murphy in just under two minutes. “Getting under the lights is an experience that’s tough to explain,” Garcia said. “You would think you’d be really nervous. But, everything just shuts down and you probably wrestle the best you’ve ever wrestled in your life.” This year Garcia is making great strides because his approach to practicing has changed. Instead of practicing to get down to weight, he’s practicing to get better. “Last year stung a little not winning (he placed third at 113),” Garcia said. “It was a tough season all around. I was cutting too much weight and it showed when things started to count. I was like 133 pounds during the week and I was cutting to 113. I wasn’t able to practice to get better, I was practicing to get the weight off. This year is much different. I’m able to maintain my weight and in practice I’m really able to focus on improving.” One of the keys to Garcia’s wrestling success is his ability to learn and expand his arsenal. “One of the things I really love about wrestling is when you get out of your comfort zone and do something you aren’t used to,” Garcia said. “It’s no secret my favorite move is the fireman’s carry - but I’ve been able to build a more elaborate offense because I worked on things I wasn’t comfortable doing. You have to work on them until you are comfortable with them.” Garcia’s top priority this year is to get back under the lights and to claim his second state title. “You think of getting under those lights all year long,” Garcia said. “You plan in your mind what your celebration would be like. You constantly think of how you want to wrestle and how you react when you win. But, all of that shuts down when you’re actually in the moment. You just have to let go and have fun.” As a team, Avon breaks down after every practice with a chant of “State Champs.” Garcia knows that after that, it’s his turn to run toward the fire.
