  28. I think D2 is a little tougher which gives it more depth and it has more schools and just more name recognition to get kids there. But NAIA is catching up. The thing about wrestling is that there so many high school wrestlers with not that many college opportunities. So when you do get a wrestler that doesn't make D1 or D2, they're still the guys not that far from the top guys. I went and wrestled at a NAIA school and its competitive, but its not life or a job like the D1 wrestlers commit to. Ill add that its rarely a free ride in NAIA, but the schools make the scholarship have a discount rate to tuition that makes it cheaper than the state school.

  30. Joe - They have a 2nd place wrestleback at the section individual tourneys However, it looks like if you lose the championship and have already beaten the consolation winner, then by rule you get 2nd place automatically. If you haven't wrestled then there is a match for true 2nd

    Which state does it best?

I posted this in a different thread I think we take for granted how awesome indiana wrestling really is. We may not have 5 guys in every weight that are ranked nationally, but the show and production of the state finals is second to none. Legit freakin awesome with 2 guys battling for a title under the lights. No can defend once I left southern indiana after teaching and coaching I moved to Arizona and went and watched their state finals.... Holy crap it's pathetic, I've never even gone back, not one time. Yet every year I watch ihsaa via track wrestling..... Even though it severely disappointed this year. Watching on track wrestling this year was a train wreck. Arizona has like 5 classes and multiple kids at STATE with losing records like14-17 or 12-15 and these guys call themselves state qualifiers. U can watch other stae finals on YouTube and just see that they don't compare to what we have going on in the Hoosier state

    2017 vs. 2018

I wouldn't be so sure that Rumph doesn't win his match. He beat Black once last year, but the last 6 weeks he has been on a roll! I am also fully biased, and I am not afraid to say that. But I still think Senior Black vs. Senior Rumph would be a real fun one to watch and think Rumph takes the match. Again, a Portage coach and obviously this is theoretical at this point.

  43. Great to see the program progress, even if it’s incremental. The men ,the new coaches, inherited have a whole new aggressiveness to them. This helps ,when high schoolers are considering, to see the in room progression. Nothing but good things in West Lafayette.

I know we have talked about this multiple times. I just wanted to say thank you to all of the 126 lb wrestlers for staying at the weight and not dropping to 120 or bumping up to 132. (Obviously some couldn't because they had great team mates at the weight above and below.) Watching all 4 of the semi finalists walk out on to the mat was maybe the most excited I have ever been at the state tournament outside of red vs lee. Then you look on the outside mats and realize there are 4 other guys who are semi finalist/finalist caliber level as well, that came up short. All legends in my eyes. Thats the deepest weight class I have ever seen in my 18 years of watching the state finals. Obviously that is debatable but these guys made a very strong argument and have my vote. That was a blast and this is a sincere THANK YOU! -nick duke

    Best Career

No disrespect Fabio, but there is no chance the answer is clear if looked at objectively. As Y2 said, it's like splitting hairs. I personally went with Mason and here is why: As has been mentioned football (and maybe other reasons) have limited his off-season tournaments. But is there really any doubt in here that Mason would not have done just as well had he wrestled a full schedule? And secondly, I think it is a different kind of impressive with what Mason was able to do as a freshman. Look at this year's tournament. There were 0 freshman state qualifiers above weight 152. For Mason to go in and compete like he did at a higher weight as a frosh and finish 3rd to me is the tie breaker. If he had :20 more he probably wins it all, but we all know about ifs and buts... To lose 11-10 to an undefeated senior at an upper weight, but dominate everyone else as a frosh, is just something special in my eyes. Again, we're splitting hairs because we just saw two of Indiana's best ever. And how crazy would have been if Joe Lee stuck around and dominated 160? He would have 3 titles, a runner up finish to a 2xer and all of the off season accolades. I am just happy I got to sit back and enjoy watching both of them "work" and will continue doing so in the future.

Add to this the notion that there were (2) additional wrestlers at this weight that could have possibly placed if they had not drawn Mills & Garcia in the ticket round at the E'ville SS. Egli of MD lost to Garcia 4-1 & Willis of Castle lost 5-1 to Mills. When you consider that fact that all (4) qualifiers from the E'ville SS placed & three of them (Garcia, Rooks, Mills) finished 1,2,3, it is easy to see that 126 at E'ville was brutal.

  48. I like how Eric McGill, one of the most consistent refs in the state, can't ref in the state tournament because of the system put in place. Votes and politics hold refs out that should be there. He Hits stalls/stalemates like they should be called. IMO he is the best. Dang the guy can ref D1 college meets but he isn't good enough to officiate our state tourney? There has to be a system to where the guys that are out of the game do not get put in place, I am sorry if anyone feels different but MAT 3 there were 2 bad calls that might have been the worse I have ever seen, Great job to Mulkey and Fattore, but both of them did not get the officiating that should be at the state finals. The consistency of calls was very bad, again IMO. I hate to see refs decide the match. Mulkeys match was based upon a judgement call that was terrible, and could not be reviewed, but Fattore match do we implement the replay at the state tourney to avoid these calls? Do we bring up a DANGER rule to where if a kid is on his back in danger the ref can let him know? What about the 2 second rule on the back, are we not implementing that anymore? It is over and in the past now, but I would hate to see this happen to more kids. To Mulkey and Fattore, I am truly sorry this happened to you guys. I know for a fact that your guys future is bright, hold your head high!
