Littell is pretty darn good, without injuries he'd be flirting with being a 4-timer also. He has a hit list of who's who in Indiana wrestling Alec Viduya Blake Boarman Brayden Lowery Riley Bettich Hunter Watts Cayden Rooks He placed at Fargo and Super 32 and lost a 1-0 match with Jesse Mendez. Like @IndianaWrestlingGuy said, if he's there you wouldn't have seen the amount of athletes headed to 126.

If we are going off of “impressive or dominant” you forgot Andrew Howe- only loss was to Reece Humphrey. I think there is a strong case that Andrew Howe is still (although Mendez could catch him and Mason Parris flirted with it) the best Indiana wrestler of all time. Even with his one loss. And though I never saw him wrestle I am assuming people also tried to avoid Lance Ellis.

Alex Tsirtsis had a close match with Craig Weinzapfel from Mater Dei. Craig actually beat him in freestyle in high school. Then in high school state finals... maybe it was the semi finals where Alex beat Craig by a few points. Angel Escobedo had a few close matches in his career and even one loss out of state. Jason Tsirtsis has a few close matches. Blake Maurer was the king of winning close matches. Same with Chad Red. Mason Paris’s was dominate but had one loss his freshman year. He is comparable. All the Lee has losses. I’ve followed Indiana high school wrestling since 1999 and haven’t seen anyone like Jesse Mendez.

  7. Mendez did have a pretty impressive weight last year. I really believe Jesse is a kid who really loves to wrestle and would welcome any and all tough competition.

Mendez is clearly having an impact on which weight classes some of our top wrestlers are competing at. Going off of the wrestler’s credentials on latest IM state rankings 126 = 15 state placements and 5 state qualifiers 132 = 3 state placements and 10 state qualifiers 138 = 8 state placements and 5 state qualifiers

Wes English as a soph chased Tsirtsis his senior year. 4 matches that got tighter as the state series went on. Tsirtsis was still a step ahead but they were still close compared to his other results.

  15. The tournament is seeded after weigh-ins. Given the travel distance for some teams, this was more ideal given that it is an eight team tournament with most kids having head to head already and avoids a seeding meeting on an alternate day. I am personally selfish and miss the free meal I get attending the seeding meeting however!

  17. Anyone who knows me, knows I love the dual part of wrestling. As I give an opinion, keep in mind I’m at Brownsburg. We don’t have a dog in the fight. We will be largest division regardless. Our goal is to win so it doesn’t matter if 8 or 12 teams go. Those that have an issue with the new system, would Joe’s suggestion/compromise take care of this - 4A and 3A have 8 teams. 1A and 2A have 12 teams. Is there a schedule or space concern I’m not aware of? If this is best for 1A and 2A schools, I’d say do it. Just my 2 cents. Thanks to everyone who makes Team State such a great event. Snyder

  18. A less serious topic just to create some laughs. The Scholar is doing some unscientific research and requesting that you post your high school weight class (the one you primarily wrestled or senior year) and then compare it to your current weight class. Reference the year of your high school weight that your using Lets be a honest, as I see you guys out there, and we've put on a pound or two. I'm hypothesizing that this will be interesting and that most guys will be up 3 to 4 weight classes. I also think there's a small percentage of guys that stay really fit and could still wrestle there old weight class. I bet a few guys haven't been on a scale in 10 years. Since this is my proposal the scholar will go first. Lets see who will play along. I say the reward whoever went up the most weight classes gets 100 bananas. I think they might need the carbs. The guy still at that same weight class as HS only gets 10 bananas. My weight class in HS was 167 lbs class of (1988). Current weight class HWY. I've been bulking up by hitting the weights. The good thing about being in HWY is you don't have to list weight Thanks, The Scholar

Didn’t or couldn’t .. maybe I’m wrong but wasn’t his age the reason he wasn’t allowed to compete. Thinking he turned 19 during wrestling season, which would of kept from competing, or at least the post season. Crazy how parents made choices or for whatever reason kids ages vary. I turned 18 first week of college, other kids turning 19 during school year lol.

  24. I think in Indiana wrestling, If a team monopolizes and dominates a class, they will self select to move up the ladder. Just curious, can a team self select to move up to any class for example from 1A to 3A or do they bump up to the big class like Cathedral and EMD?
    1 point
  25. Maybe if 2 or 3 in a row happens. Find a way to improve the IHSAA's success factor in that they only move up for 1 year and not two?

  31. Here is the new IHSAA State tournament idea. 380 man bracket. split up into 8 days of wrestling non-stop. No classes because with this tournament every school is entered in. If there is a weight class that Is full (there isn't). There may need to be a round robin with the two best kids with records. Then after all of this, there are random draws for seedings. Next, the finals match will be the coaches and their wrestlers doing a tag team like deal at Bankers Life. This is single elimination because "if ya ain't first you're last" May the best wrestler win, and everyone else go home. Also, the heavyweight and 106 lbs state champ have to wrestle. Good luck boys and girls

  33. And Silas is the same age as a junior and only lost once as a 13 or 14 year old freshman 170 pounder beating state placers..So realistically he could be going for his 2nd state title as a Jr. And def could've been a potential 3xer with his talent.. Nothing against anybody but he's on another level than everybody at 195 and beyond and is up there with mendez p4p great guys in state and among other all time greats.. Also with his work in the classroom and support he gets from many ppl especially his father, there's no limit how good he can be... Big 10 bound with world class aspirations!

  43. The Winamac Warriors (1A School 293 enrollment) 5 years ago had only 7 wrestlers in the varsity program... Using Classed Team State as a carrot along with - Getting a local club started, and VERY involved Head Coach with involved assistant coaches all way down through middle school we have 23 on the High School Roster this year... its not 50 kids BUT we fill the weight classes and are getting competitors in the room.. I can't begin to know the frustrations of running a Team Tournament like this but I do know that our kids get excited and just the chance to possibly be able to compete at a State level Tournament even if its not IHSAA. Why not embrace the change and try it for couple years (one year is not even close to get enough data to make a decision on) I like the idea of 8 teams larger 2 classes 12 teams smaller 2 classes... no matter what choice is made there will be upset people just nature of the game...

  45. 2013-14there were 22 kids on the Garrett squad 2019-20 we started with 51 and are 49 or 50 now 16-17,17-18,19-20 we made it. Felt we were snubbed one...maybe two years. We knew we were close though. Funny thing is that we were a “bubble” vote in team this year yet we got 2nd. We’ve been seeded 5th twice and placed 2nd both of those years. Unseeded to 7th another year. We knew we could win it this year or compete before we were voted in. In 18 we knew we had a shot as well and came close in a runner up finish. This has definitely attracted kids! Believe it or not...our success has improved our feeder system and we have good wrestlers coming up. ......I’d bet that the same exists for other programs who are excited for the opportunity to win team state.

  46. If we have 8 teams per division... why not have a straightforward bracket that we can show to non-wrestling people, publish in a newspaper, put on a t-shirt, promote without sounding like weirdos, predict results without round-robin tie-breakers, etc. Are we thirsty for a fourth/fifth match at the championships? Why not have 4 rounds: quarters, conso/semis together, conso, finals and place six or eight?

  47. We are having parents register their daughters for the IHSGW State Championships. You must have your school register their girl wrestlers and have your high school coaches or assistant coaches take them to this tourney and coach them. Please understand if any high school girl has not been registered by their high school or head coach they will not be able to participate. Gary Myers Director IHSGW.
