  1. Everyone can have an opinion on whether or not Caden should have wrestled with his knee injury....or whether or not Preston should have wrestled with his completely torn ACL. At Brownsburg, we listen to doctors with medical degrees. After meeting with multiple doctors (who have medical degrees and aren't googling it), both wrestlers were told they could push through the season if they chose....and get it fixed after the season. It was their decision with guidance from their family. We will continue to listen to people who get paid to be actual doctors.

  2. One of the most fun things about watching state is seeing those jaw-dropping moments where we realize a kid is WAY better than we expected. You guys know this: if a kid comes from a school that doesn't wrestle a tough schedule, it's so hard to gauge how good they really are or how much progress they've made from the previous season. Most of the time, those shiny undefeated records from a weak schedule get exposed at semi-state and state. But once or twice a year, our jaws drop and we go, "Oh, crap. Kid leveled up. Dude's for real." For me, there were 2 kids like that this year: Easton Doster and Noah Weaver Neither of these guys was new on the scene. And both had some off-season success that could have suggested an upward trajectory. But there were other guys with glossy records like them, too, who turned out to be on a "regular" trajectory of slightly better than last year once they got thrown in the fire. But when Doster hit that insane low single on Courtney that he could have hit on most D1 starters, it was an, "Oh crap. Dude's arrived" kind of moment. Then to see how slick he was both on attack and on defense the rest of that match on through the final against someone like Walker was super impressive. He is SO athletic and sharp and slick. Wow. And Noah Weaver? Holy Andrew Howe, Batman. That kid's got some pace and heavy hands and hips and an engine that do not stop. Geez! To go from getting smashed by fellow underclassmen Cashman and Costello at 170 at semi-state and state in 2023 to being a 190 that runs circles around #2 McConnell and leads wire-to-wire over nationally ranked and Indiana #1 Henry? WOW. "Leveled up" would be the understatement of the weekend. Mad, mad props to these two. It was so fun to watch them this weekend. Can't wait to see what they do next.

  3. I’m trying to be nice about this with you. Clearly your kid has knee issues also. He had two very large knee sleeves on!! Is that just for looks? With that said, the issues popped up again Friday night. He made it that far.. he wasn’t going to quit after that. According to your post, im guessing your kid would have called it a season??? He did all he could and had to default in placement match when he couldn’t go anymore. By keeping going he helped the team win it. He’s feeling ok today and had no regrets and can’t wait for his ring. So to recap your concerns… 1. He took multiple injury times In the win against your son… that’s false 2. He took injury times during the match when he was about to get turned… false only stoppages were potentially dangerous calls by the best ref in the state. Injury time was taken after the knee was bent all crazy. Once it was stable he continued and continued to take shots in the third. 3. Now your issue is the culture of my family of hoe we handled this injury this season. I assure you my son had the best doctors, trainers avg physical therapist possible. You can’t just say… “nothing personal” and then question my kids integrity, my family culture and my parenting. That’s the definition of personal… Sour grapes much??? Again I’m trying ti be civil but you’re making it difficult. Let’s get this knee right and Caden will give him a rematch in a few months. Would that make you happy? I promise he will be a lot better then. I’m over this discussion. Again, super proud of my kid my state champs.

For anyone that knows Waylon when it comes to wrestling he has a mindset at all times to score points and break his opponent. All the while being confident he will do that. What is wrong with that? His speech reflected that and the question is asked less than 5 minutes after he just got done taking care of business. You think his mindset changed that fast? The kid just went full throttle on a very tough bracket. Being humble in an interview is not be a requirement. Being confident in your ability is if you want to win on that level.

  5. Didn’t want this to be known, but now the cats out of the bag. The injury occurred again over the summer late. The choice was to fix it and miss the season or to tape it up and try to grind it and repair it after season. He chose to wrestle as it couldn’t get any worse and to get it fixed now (after season). With that said, it popped out and back in Friday night. It freaked him out. It was slipping all weekend. If he doesn’t set it when it slips, it can go all the way out. Long story short, he didn’t make it through his placement match and we were ok with what he accomplished this season. With all of this said… He has wrestled CP 4 times. Cruz twice and Will Clark twice. You guys never had a single drink during those losses. Never took injury against those monsters. Lastly.. if you are questioning the toughness or integrity of my kid.. you have never met him or the rest of my family. We don’t roll like that. Feel free to call and discuss. The author of this post @Chris Coopercan attest for how tough my boys are. My oldest wrestled for him one summer. Busted his eye wide open at Disney. We glued it shut with super glue 5 times to ensure Columbus East got 6 every round. He still rocks his scar with honor. Proud of my son and proud of my state champs!!! Crazy how the only hate in this site over the last few days is directed to the big three. That’s the world we live in now… 10 years ago all you would see is love for kids and hard work. We live in a society where people hate everyone and everything. It’s just sad!!!! Matt Brewer 317-201-0644

  6. If anything the IHSAA takes from State Finals being held this year in Evansville to bring back to Indy next year . KEEP THE FLAMES and Smoke for introductions of the Wrestlers. So ….. Bad As* !!! Can’t wait to see some pictures for the wrestlers and in the background .

  7. Thank you for your kind words. Easton has been working for this since he was 5. Watching his big brother in high school & at Wabash college, learning and studying how the college guys do it at such a young age made him aspire to be the best. He is still hungry and will continue on this wrestling this summer and improving to defend his title!!

  8. Every year for the last fifty (that is about my length of recollection) people always gripe about misuse of injury time. I think that sometimes injury time is abused, but there is nothing to be done about that except maybe scoring one point any time an injury time is taken when the Official determines a score is imminent. Other than that I fear we begin to penalize a kid who is injured and that should not happen. I thinik most coaches, if they wil admit it, have had a kid who faked it to get a rest. I remember once back in the early eighties when my guy was wretling in the Regional and in the middle of a flurry he began to scream. The Official stopped the action, and I quickly moved to him. I told him to lie still and asked him where he was injured,. He looked up and said, "I'm not injured coach I just need a break." I wanted to kill him, ir was embarassing eventhough no one knew. I told him to lay there until I helped him up. I got him up and had him walk around, and then he went back to wrestling. The "break" did not help as he got beat fairly soundly. THe next week at praxctice I made him run each day. He asked why and I told him it he needed a break during the match he must not be in shape. There may have been others, but nearly as blatant.

  9. When have we ever wanted to be compared to other sports? That's how we ended up with no wrestlebacks. For the record I honestly didn't key in on any injury calls this weekend I thought were gamesmanship. I was just stating I have been seeing it a lot recently and feel we need to do what we can to minimize and curb it as much as possible. Personally, I had a wrestler who got a bloody nose every match and we were never able to use our conditioning to break an opponent which drove me nuts, I can't stand breaks in the flow of the matches but that is the style I enjoy watching and coaching.

Wyatt Krejsa bonus pointed everyone in the state leading into the state championship match. Hunter May had a very dominant season as well and held the match to a regular decision 13-6. I'd have to check the stats (it's been a long season) but I think Hunter May landing that headlock in the finals may have been the only offense points given up by Wyatt to an Indiana opponent this season. Wyatt had a hell of a year and put in so much work!!

  17. I know it happens at all semi-states some, but there were so many state placer level dudes left in Evansville. Not just from Brownsburg...studs going down for a lot of schools. It is freaking brutal - win your regional and draw into a top ranked guy who lost to another top ranked guy. Lose at regional to a state high placer and draw into another high state placer. This is always a concern for any semi-state, but it is freaking bananas at the Evansville Semi-State.

  18. That's the point. We're consistently around 9-12th in overall talent depth nationally--but in terms of winning an individual state title, we're up there a notch higher because of the forced depth of the field compared to other states.

Yeah, for a kid who constantly heard how his state title was from “ND” and how wouldn’t be competitive to those top 5 guys. I wouldn’t be humble either, especially after how dominant he was in it either. The only thing on his mind is who the next best guy is so he can find away to move around and beat them.

Howe is always my default answer. Untouchable. People seem to forget he also had wins over 3 of the top 5 guys in the country at his weight in the same day at Fargo too. If we’re splitting hairs with Angel, his lone HS loss was a better loss than Escobedo’s. Not a great argument, but I stand by it.

Has a single wrestler ever had as significant an impact on the Indiana state tournament wrestling landscape as this young man did? His upset win Friday night made the seemingly impossible; possible. The shockwaves of that win changed the tournament landscape for the remainder of the weekend. Hats off to you big man! You opened the door for several things to happen! BB and CG should consider making this young man an honorary member of your roster this year…at the very least, cut off a small piece of each of your team trophies and mail them to Dekalb HS.

  23. This year showed how deep we are which is a good sign. Basically anyone in the top 5 is capable of winning a title. There have been recent years where 7 or more of the preseason #1's were basically locks.

  24. Well this topic went a bit sideways. The intent of my original post and topic was that we as coaches have a responsibility to see that injury time isn't abused. There is a difference between an injury and using the injury timeout to collect your thoughts, breath, escape a situation, etc. If we as a wrestling community are ok with using injury timeout as a strategy, well then my friends, we are no better than basketball and that's a direction I would rather not take. Also, single class wrestling sucks, there, that should get this topic headed in the right direction...

  25. The only thing I'll say about that is that we've only seen Veazy as a sophomore, too, and his jump up from already having been in tight matches with a killer like Orlando Cruz a year ago would be significant. And...the power output from Weaver that was a problem for McConnell and Henry might be slightly reduced against a fellow uber-athlete like Veazy. I'd consider dropping another $15 to watch Veazy-Weaver, though, I'll tell you that.

  27. That's why Silas is practicing today, so he can step it up and not bore you anymore. On a side note Coach Swain and Curry have never coached anyone to stall, that idea cracks me up. They demand you to score points and punch(figure of speech) your opponent in the mouth no matter how much your up or down in a match. Being soft is not tolerated by those dudes.

Then they mentioned us as one of the best state championship atmospheres. And then they shouted out Ocampo for placing!

He also seemed to misunderstand the question about how meaningful it was to be the second warrior to win it that night. His answer made him come across self-absorbed--but he clearly just missed the question. Again, easy to understand after such a big moment and still getting oxygen back in the brain.

    Streaming

As someone who did not attend the State Finals in person, I have to say we might be the luckiest wrestling fans in the country when it comes to our streaming options of the State Finals. I understand everyone’s complaints about Flo and the issue from the IHSAAtv issue during the placement matches. But the product that was put out there is second to none. There were 3 views it appeared on all of the mats throughout the event. That meant that at almost all times that you could watch the action as it was coming at you. The NCAA doesn’t even get that level of coverage. Even during the NCAA pre-semifinal round you just get a view from upstairs. The commentators on Mats 2-4 for the first two sessions as others have mentioned, were also as good as any I’ve heard. I was thoroughly impressed! Again, I know that some have issues supporting Flo and others had issues with the Placement matches, but Flo had zero issues beyond sound on 1 mat for about 10 minutes. So I want to thank the IHSAA for all of the people who made the streaming experience, for me, so great! I seriously contemplated driving the 5 hours down to Evansville if the streaming was messed up, but thankfully, it was almost perfect!

  43. Now that the IHSAA has settled into the all-day Friday schedule for state finals, has there been any push to add semi-state 5th or 5th/6th to the state finals? I know many have proposed this in theory. That's 20 or 24 per weight, Opening Round 3v6 and 4v5 matches Friday morning, Round of 16 in the afternoon. More butts in seats, more concessions bought all day. More money all around. Plus no need to continue the endless discussion of wrestle backs at semi-state. (At semi-state, QF losers wrestle each other same time as semi-finals, 5/6 placement match same time as other placement matches)

Jake hockaday is most dominate! He is the standard in indiana. Incredible wrestler and character. True role model for the sport! He litterly handled his way through the whole series. Never down and never in harms way and pure domination! I for one was shell shocked with the pin but incredibly bias here. Up 3-0 with takedown and escape in seconds with a Rideout to end the 1st. But man kyrel took advantage when shepherd turned in and locked that cradle up tight! Kudos to kyrel and congrats on the state championship! Much deserved! Good luck to kyrel at the citadel!
