  1. They do things to facilitate more matches in a shorter period of time. 1. Most tournaments don't have pre-defined weights. You show up and weigh in and they group the brackets by closest weights to get an even distribution of wrestlers. They don't waste time trying to seed. They don't have huge overloaded brackets that slow a tournament down and they avoid the super small brackets with 1or 2 guys in a bracket. 2. They used modified wrestling rules. If you go out of bounds or have a whistle, you start in the neutral position all the time. It really improves the flow of the tournament. 3. the best thing is they schedule age groups with time allotments. 6 -12 for example wrestle from the slot of 8 to 11. So youre there for 3 hours and done. Then the 12 to 18 years wrestle from 11 to 2pm. You're only at the gym for 3 to 4 hours. Its much more manageable. 4. You don't have to buy a USA wrestling card. No offense, I never bought a card in Ohio because the tournaments weren't sanctioned. And that was fine. It gives you more flexibility.

It's been awesome to see this great competitor move up the ranks from athlete to coach. He's not only a great wrestler but even better person. Hopefully he will show the move that pinned some guy named Bo Nickal in the schoolboy national championship match. Be there ready to roll at 6pm Coach Tonte

  5. ISWA format doesn't work well in my opinion and think partially responsible for high turnover rate. I still remember the last ISWA tournament I took my son to. Weigh ins were at 6 AM, my son wrestled only 3 matches that day and was on the math for about 5 minutes. We didn't get out till 5PM. 5 minutes wrestling for taking up 11 hours of his and my time. Its just plain stupid, and I quit going to tournaments after that. And keep in mind I was a hardcore dad. Wrestling has to figure a way to schedule it so kids get can compete in a 3 to 4 hour window. Parents just don't like sitting in the stands doing nothing and spending on unhealthy concessions. And theres competition out there from other sports, need to find a better way. Ohio does a much better job of this than the ISWA.

  6. This topic is near and dear to me as I'm relatively new to the sport, have now been in two different states, and I have a kid that wants to be great but is by no means there yet...but is mature enough and old enough when he started to know the process (although he still does get down on himself). But damn if so many don't take it too seriously, and others not seriously enough. And they go together...especially when it comes to growing the sport. First and foremost, if you are running a tournament...AT ALL COSTS START THE DAMN TOURNAMENT ON TIME!! As we all know, there's nothing more frustrating than travelling 1-2 hours at the butt-crack of dawn to get to a weigh-in at 7:30 for a "Wrestling will start at 9am SHARP" to which the wrestling actually starts about 10:15 if you're lucky. Which leads me to my next point, which is the whole business of weight management and making weight and cutting. Why are their weight classes for individual tournaments at the elementary level? Except for maybe truly "elite" tournaments like state? Group kids into 8 man brackets or round robin by experience and let them get mat time. I love taking my kid to go wrestle good competition, but like Mr. Brewer said it's a little like "man, what am I doing?" when you make this effort for your kid to lose 3-1 to the eventual champ in the opening round then run into another hammer that finishes 2nd or 3rd the next round. Yes, it was good he was "close" to the guys that finished strong...but also a bit frustrating to make that much effort into 2 matches for a tournament that started way late. And it's not about my kid "winning" bur rather just making it worth it. I'm the first to tell my son "If you don't like losing, get your ass in the gym and work harder". But I also would like to see a value in driving all over and getting my son more mat time (which is why we all love duals). I can see how some parents that aren't so into it can say "to hell with this" and disencourage their kid to continue with the sport. I just think the target customer needs to be identified and someone needs to take the lead on making the sport more enjoyable all the way around to everyone, not just the die-hards. Very interesting convo!

  8. Tremendously proud of Darden for his achievement this past weekend. He gets better each time he competes. Darden represents Wabash with class in victory and defeat. I'm sure Wabash is disappointed they aren't bringing back a team trophy to Crawfordsville this year. But, with all of their national qualifiers returning next season (as well as many others capable of scoring big points at nationals) look for them to earn a trophy next year and potentially contend for a national title.

  9. Agreed, with 20 kids banging and having to rely on trackwrestling it was very frustrating. But other than that great tourney! Hats off to @JMILL and Ryan Parrish for herding the cats at weigh ins.

  10. I want to give kudos to IU's Jake Kleimola (Merrillville). While he was a IN HS State Champion, wrestling at 197 in college hasn't been easy. 2017 - He redshirted his freshman year and went 3-4 with his only wins against wrestlers from Eastern Michigan (non-starter), DII Findlay and Muskegon Community College. 2018 - Things didn't get much better as he stepped into a starting role for IU, obviously before he was ready. Jake went 0-13 last year but only 4 of those lossed were major (or higher) decisions. There were several close matches, including seven by one or two. 2019 - Jake finished a respectable 13-18 on the season with an 8th Place finish at the Big Ten Tournament. That's a huge jump and one I thought should be recognized. He has two more seasons to go.

  11. Is Purdue headed in the right direction after year 5 for Ersland? Where do you grade them? IMO 2019-2020 is a hot seat year. Some are not exactly seeing the improvement promised by assistant AD Calvin Williams preemptively pushed for the change at the end of 2014. An AA is needed or next year will be a hot seat season; Lyde could be a job saver. It has helped to have Indiana, Maryland, and Michigan State to push around, and Illinois is imploding, but 2 of the 4 programs have made changes, and Illinois will soon. I think the Tyrell Todd is good assistant coach, and by all reports they needed to get rid of Tanelli, but like many, I am hopeful Schopp will be a better long term upgrade, but results matter... 12. Wabash's Darden Schurg pulled a rabbit out of a hat and won himself a National Championship tonight in Roanoake VA. A two-time Indiana HS State Runnerup at Crown Point, Schurg was down 3-1 in the final period and tied the match via a stalling penalty point and an illegal move/hold penalty point (think it was grabbing the headgear). Jairod James from Mt. Union got in deep on a double leg shot in sudden victory, but Sshurg rolled him through, elevator style, and came out on top for the winning takedown. 174 lb. Final Score: Darden Schurg 5 Jairod James 3 SV1 Congratulations Darden!

  13. That's spot on. I think the current local tourney formats are a turnoff. Trying to squeeze HS thru K wrestlers into one gym(s) and making kids wait all day to wrestle twice is turning kids away not growing the sport. I understand local clubs have to generate revenue and this has always been the model but maybe we need to explore other options. Volunteers put countess hours in to make these tourneys go, and not one of them intentionally makes kids wait for 5 hours between matches. Unfortunately it still happens and will continue to happen under the current system. Wouldn't that volunteer time be better spent on something that was driving interest in our sport, or at the very least not driving them away? I'm not sure what that looks like, but maybe some Round Robin as Galagore mentions or the evening tourneys where kids can get in and out quick. More age specific events?

  14. I am looking for a good dual team to be on starting in April. I am a senior about to go off to college and I’m looking for some fun dual teams to be on this summer. I will be cleared to start wrestling the second weekend in April, I had surgery in early March. I am looking for a 182 or 195 spot I would be willing to wrestle either. 18. I have no opinion on the job the Purdue coach is doing, but from a pure math/logic standpoint I am not enamored with your analysis. Wrestling to seed just means the seeding committee accurately assessed their ability, not that they had a good performance. The contra argument would be that their seeds were too low and the coach has the ability to impact that. With 7 of 10 wrestlers in the bottom half of the bracket wrestling to seed seems a minimum standard. Using a plus/minus analysis it looks like they actually wrestled to one spot below their overall seed. 125: +1 133: 0 141: 0 149: 0 157: 0 165: 0 174: -2 184: +1 195: -2 285: +1 Total: -1

  20. Yeah the girls Tournament has really grown and the ISWA is trying their best. The first year we went it was all on 1 mat I believe and we didn't start in the morning with the rest. Last year we started on one and eventually went to two. This year we started on two. It has really out grown 2 mats as well. I do appreciate their effort to keep it in the main fieldhouse where everyone is. I also don't want to see it moved to a separate weekend either but the extra 150 wrestlers, hopefully more next year, is really causing a strain on mat space. The long weekends of Folkstyle state are nothing new and honestly I am okay with them being longer and it should be expected. I will say that most of the youth Sunday tournaments I went to had between 250-350 and were out by latest 2pm most times. We all know this is a tremendous improvement from the freestyle tournaments of the 90s. In terms of sending my youth wrestlers to tournaments I weigh on the side of caution most of the time. My assistant coach, Brian Foxworthy, has a great quote. "Winning is a habit but so is losing" if you can't find a kid success at any level it will drive them away. We host our own tournament were all of our kids get their feet wet and even then I have watched kids get beat twice and never come back to another practice even after a positive pep talk. We have all seen the super star youngsters that fizzle out. The ones I want to keep out are the kids that lose some and keep coming back as their skills will eventually catch up to their effort and is a fine line to walk of getting them beat too much.

  22. Yep, a 68 match break is about 6 hours. The ladies at the Iswa don’t typically allow this to happen. Sorry to here about that. State is just so big that stuff like this happens, but is not the norm. They also move matches and go even and odds on two mats to help finish things up faster. I will ask you this... aren’t we all glad that we are getting all folkstyle state in one weekend now instead of two? Saving lots of people money. Due to the fact that people don’t have to come to Indy two weekends in a row anymore. State is what it is. I really trust that we have the best people running our state tourney as anyone could ever ask for. I really don’t think your experience is typical, but it did happen and that stinks. As far as losing 5 times in a day, give it a go.... if your wrestler is struggling and you think it will hurt them mentally or physically, let the powers to be know and call it a day. Anybody that actually cares about the kids will completely understand. It’s ok. Just encourage that child to continue to come to club, do locals, and do friendly meets. Maybe the next year they will be better prepared for state. If you feel that they aren’t ready for another long day at state, tell em to stay home and keep working to get to that state level. Me personally have told several people not to go to state (for multiple reasons). You have provided great insight also coach. Threads like this help us all. Thanks!

  23. I, as a head coach, totally understand this. I preach effort more than wins and loses to both of my girls. My oldest went 0-2 got 2nd her first year, went 2-0 last year and won and went 3-2 and got 3rd this year experiencing her first real set back that we all know won't stop coming. My youngest went 1-2 this year and placed third. And both got the annual dipping dots at the end. But like others have noted parents are a driving factor. I love the sport of wrestling and I was even frustrated having my daughters first bout #2 and second at #70, yes you read that right a 68 match break. Kids at a young age understand having success and not. And getting beat 5 times in a day is going effect most kids even if they have supportive parents. I run our youth program as well I think there is a fine line between attending events to get your feet wet and going to too many before your ready. We loved our friendship meets this year and it allows all of your kids to support each other.

  24. A major part of it is parents and the events. Name another sport where a kid will get 5 minutes of "playing time" over 3-8 hours? The way we have always done it can't be an excuse to change the format of our events. I know we have a lot of success with the weeknight events where another club comes and they match up on the fly. We have to sell the sport to not only the kids, but also the parents or they'll find something else for their kid to do.

  26. Michigan does it for the state tournament. I like that if you can't fill one weight but have 2 stud seniors stuck together you can get them both in the tournament. There were 2 state finals matches between teammates this year I believe. Some kid who may have not had a chance to compete came home a state-runner up. Can't argue the kids deserved it if that's where they placed.

  27. One of the biggest issues in wrestling is retention of athletes. Based on USAW statistics the retention rate in 2017 for Indiana was 53%. That means every year even we bring in 47% new wrestlers...at the same time we are losing that many. Indiana is actually doing well compared to the other states, but in most people's minds it is something that could use a vast improvement. Indiana has 8,000 USAW members and every year almost 4,000 of them are new! Think if we kept 75% and then still added 4,000 new members! You can view the stats on page 15 http://content.themat.com/2016-17annualreport.pdf Retaining kids...and parents is something that will grow the sport. There are many reasons kids/parents don't come back, one big one is the tournaments.

  30. Let dem girls know that state champ Carson Brewer and state runner up Ray Rioux went years without winning matches. Both got skunked their first year. I had tickets to a Colts AFC title game and skipped it to go see Carson get pinned two times in less than a minute total. Here my point. Don’t make it about winning and losing. Make it about a day with your family and hopefully a day of making friends. Going back to the day may son got beat (the day if they AFC title game). It was at Columbus. One of the kids that beat him was a dude from Jeffersonville with giant feet and a million dollar smile. His name was Kameron Fuller. He and my son wrestled with and against each other for many years. I consider Kam and his mom good family friends. The day wasn’t about getting skunked or missing a Colts game. It’s about good family time, making friends, and gettin em next time!

    Folkstyle State Finals

If it all pans out according to speculation they will have one of the most decorated freshman classes anyone has seen in awhile. Culver had their 3 this year but CP could end up with 7 or 8 stellar freshman who are all capable of making a HS varsity lineup. How that all may spread out weight class wise is still up for grabs though?

  36. Ha...then you mention 30% of the weights where the defending national champ or undefeated #1 phenom loses. Those 3 matches made it well worth watching the finals. A few thoughts on those 3 matches heading into NCAAs: 1. Will the committee reward Rivera with the #1 overall seed despite the bumped-up loss to Micic when Piccininni also owns a win over Lee and still stands undefeated? I definitely feel he deserves it, but either way Lee will most likely have to beat both of them to win a second title. No small task. 2. Man, Marinelli has Joseph's upper body ties and hooks figured out. It will be fireworks again if they meet in the final, but the big question is going to be whether Marinelli can get past the rest of the field where he'll see plenty of guys with more of an outside/low-attack game than Joseph. (Also...does anyone else think these guys accidentally swapped first or last names? Vincenzo Marinelli would be a beast on the senior circuit for Italy.) 3. Cassar's takedown was a thing of beauty, but I thought Steveson looked mostly in control until then. I'd still pick Gable to win NCAAs for two reasons: 1) I think he's less vulnerable to losing before the finals than Cassar and 2) I'm not convinced Cassar will get another split-second window like that very often for his blast double against the usually impenetrable Steveson.

  37. I'll add that while Kyle Hatch didn't finish quite as strong as he would have liked, he did give National Champion Lucas Jeske his toughest match, losing 9-7 SV1. I was also impressed with Owen Doster at 133. He didn't place but was impressive in a couple of wins and his losses were by 1 point to the 4 seed (who finished 3rd) and 2 points to the 8 seed (who finished 5th). Those two stood out to me in addition to Schurg.

  38. I would like to see a riding point. If you ride a wrestler out for an entire period, 1pt will be added. You can only earn 1pt in a match. No need for riding time clock. A wrestler should be rewarded for a ride out. Most of the time the are called for stalling at some point.
