How about little Oak Hill winning a semi state title?

Everyone has their opinion. First I must thank Indiana Wrestling for allowing us a season when many other states did not. In August if you would've asked me about a season I would have told you there was no chance well happily I was proven wrong today. I will say as a former wrestler and now a coach YES, the system sucks, kids don't get the shine they deserve, but its is the system we have had for how many years? You can bash the IHSAA all you want but every school and every kid is playing under the same rules, top 4 advance. Are some semi states not as deep as others, sure. Are some weights not as deep as others, sure, BUT every year when you leave the state finals you know the kid at the top of the podium was the best at that weight for 4 weeks. We are a single class state finals which is the absolute BEST part about our state tournament series. My favorite part of state is seeing a small school get kids to state and even to the finals. Could the system use a change OF COURSE, but it is what we have and we are wrestling that is a lot better than most right now. Again thank you to every single wrestler, coach, parent, and fan that made this season possible. I love Indiana wrestling good luck to all of those still competing next weekend!

A slam is a judgement call., The big part of what the rule states is that when someone picks the other person up they are responsible for their safe return to the mat. The safe return is purely the responsibility of the offensive wrestler, and there is no requirement for the defender to protect himself. Years ago there was the criteria that the offensive wrestler had to hit a knee first, but that was discarded a long time ago. The slam is a needed call in wrestling because it keeps someone from intentionally drilling someone to win a match, or to make it harder for the opponent to compete. The thing that makes it bad is that whether a kid can continue competing, or not, is dependent on a decision that has to be made in 2:00 minutes of "recovery time". The only person the coach is responsible to is his wrestler. If he thinks that the slam has impaired his wrestlers ability to possibly win the match then his best decision is to not continue. The ability to continue, or not, only has to do with what is going on in that match and has nothing to do with the rest of the tournament. Postulating if the wrestler may be able to compete later, or not, has no (and should not have any) bearing on the decision at that moment. The wrestlers ability to wrestle in matches later in a tournament only indicates that he was able to continue with more recovery time, but proves nothing as to the severity (or lack of severity) at the time the match was ended due to disqualification. I would also add that I have almost never seen a match where to person is DQed for a slam and his coaches, fans, and family were happy.

It will be a long time before you see a more dominant Semi-State performance from a team. Chesterton brought it today. Coach Joll had them ready to go. Good luck next weekend.

Welcome to Indiana. Maybe before you criticize everyone on here, you should educate yourself about our state tournament history. Everyone agrees that we need wrestlebacks. We’ve been arguing for them for decades. But the IHSAA won’t listen and won’t add them. The coaches propose it every chance they get. Every person that moves into our state says the same thing as you. This is what we have. We are doing everything we can to change it. Sorry you couldn’t handle it.

Of course Penn is up there. They took like 7 transfers in this year!

I’ll give you props, SAC had a prettt good day. Congrats to all those kids getting to state. Kreager is a freaking monster, he pinned several good kids. And Hinton is gonna be a stud, he’s still such a baby.

Just left Semi-State East Chicago and I have to say the way Indiana does it’s state is a embarrassment considering how good Indiana wrestling is overall. I moved here from out of state and this is the absolute WORST way to determine who goes to state. You have high level wrestlers going hone while below average kids go to state. Is that what you want? A watered down state tournament lacking quality? Without seeding and a more importantly wrestle backs Indiana State is hollow! I watched kids crying after close loses. NO KIDS should be crying off losing one match before state or at it for that matter. It’s is an ABSOLUTE JOKE OF A SYSTEM! Yes, my kid lost in a match that never should have happened putting the 5th ranked kid in the state with the 2nd ranked kid in the state in a death match with no wrestle back. He lost a close match and that pisses me off. He is a better wrestler than most kids actually going to state! Howevee, even if he had won it would still be upsetting because a high quality kid goes homes while other kids move on that wouldn’t last 1 minute with either kid! it is a disgrace!

Shameful. Coaches should be ashamed

RE: Thrine v Pierson... the slams a judgment call (I’ve reffed some high level matches in the past, other states tourneys, I wouldn’t have called it a slam) but the coaches got up an immediately told him to lay down/stay down. You can call it concern, there’s always that, but even if it was illegal, the dump wasn’t that bad. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I think it’s shameful to get up and immediately wave your hands in the motion to tell a kid to stay down.

Heavyweight finals at Fort Wayne was a blast to watch. Both hit fantastic high crotches and moved their feet the entire time. Tons of action from two units!! Muncie came out on top. Thanks for a great show Muncie and Erb. I felt like I was watching 106

Great match at 145 for the final at Jasper. Reynolds beats Watson And....I love that the reff's seemed to be confused on a call and the kids on the mat laughed it off and were clearly confused on the call and trying to talk/work it out for themselves. Two great young men, that showed a lot of sportsmanship

Well sounds like those guys that are going to state are better than the ones that aren’t! They seed it from sectionals then it’s based on how you do after! If you don’t want to wrestle someone really good then take care of business in sectional and regional! Doesn’t matter if it’s seeded or anything kids are gonna cry in ever sport when the season is over!

You wrestle who’s out in front of you. Many of these wrestlers haven’t wrestled some of their opponents prior to this tournament. So who’s to say one is better than the other? So once again, wrestle who is in front of you and may the best man win.

Edgewood’s deckard had two against Dalton in the round to go for the win. I’m my opinion the ref made a bad no call.

Could it be that maybe his coaches were concerned for him. It’s not like there’s ever been an athlete that got hurt but yet still tries to carry on. From the safety standpoint, it could’ve been the right decision to halt him until he could be evaluated.

Sorry Trips, but I have to fact-check you on this one! Heavyweight Bill Trainer was Mater Dei's first state champion. The 190-pounder accomplished the feat in 1953. Bill's sister, Sister Joanna Trainer, is a retired nun living in Ferdinand, Indiana. Sister Joanna prays for ol' Hook and Half on a regular basis and send him messages of encouragement. Tip of the hat to Sister J and the Trainer clan. They are good people!

If he can stick Buchanan like that he has the ability to beat anyone. I know when I do my pickems that Gabe Sollars will be the state champ on my picks.

#8 Ben Dalton vs #13 Lane Deckard goes into OT tied 8-8 with Deckard getting 2 takedowns with 20 seconds left in the 3rd. Deckard had what looked to be a takedown in OT not called then Dalton puts him on his back. After discussion call stands as a no takedown. Dalton wins.
