just to enlighten the rest of the board.....................someone who works 30 yrs in da mill only has 4-7 fingers left total and has inhaled lots and I mean lots of chemicals that damage the thought and reasoning section of the brain, so when he says 7 its most likely based on the # of bodies/heads he saw floating in Wolf Lake while driving home from work. He woke up confused and just thought this must be a premonition and posted his prediction. Lets not lose sight of the fact that @regionrat1 has been invited to move down to live in #TheCounty near 1 of the local trailer parks in Avon by former region stud Kyle Ayersman. So his allegiance to the North may be short lived when he finds his new digs and starts eating at Charbonno's.

  10. I'm sure their will be some people(more than likely old timers) that did not like the Pat on the butt. I don't think it was anything to try and humiliate Jack Servies I just think he is having fun and loving the sport. Everyone who has ever been around him or knows anything about him knows he is the nicest and most respectful kid out there. It just looks to me like he is bored. Servies could place in state this year and he made him look like a sectional qualifier.I think he may be one of the most College ready that I've seen in his Senior year. Remember Nick Lee doesn't count because he wasnt a senior in High School lol.

  13. By 1956, New Albany, Bloomington, Evansville Central, Reitz and Mater Dei fielded wrestling teams. The powers of the 17-member Southern Indiana Athletic Conference decided that a field of five was enough to hold a post-season tournament. Bloomington High, a perennial powerhouse and annual State Champion title threat, was coached by Indiana legend, Clifford “Two-Bit” Myers. The beastly Bloomington team captured the first two team titles. Phil Thrasher’s New Albany spoiled the party for Myers in 1958 and 1959, snatching the title from the Panthers. Thrasher, an Indiana Hall of Fame coach and still second on the State’s all-time wins list, traded wins with Myers until 1965 when Evansville Reitz managed a tie with New Albany. An expanded field of ten teams did nothing to dent the Bulldogs’ fortunes as Thrasher claimed titles through 1968. Don Henry’s Reitz Panthers broke through, claiming the SIAC title in 1969 and 1970, becoming the first Evansville school to claim an outright SIAC title. In his 16th year at the helm of Mater Dei, Joe Gossman boldly proclaimed his Wildcats would win the 1971 SIAC title. Gossman had strength in numbers, as Gossman had 60 boys on his team—in a school with a total male population of 175. Dave Macke, Tom Jankowski, Gene Scott and Jim Schroeder delivered titles as Mater Dei placed ten wrestlers and nudged second-place Evansville Harrison by 19 points. Evansville Rex Mundi was third, followed by Bosse, Memorial, Reitz, New Albany, Mt. Vernon, Central, Jasper, Tell City, Castle, Washington, North Knox, Boonville and North. Mater Dei dominated until 1975, when the Jasper Wildcats claimed their first title. The 1976 SIAC was in the third year of a new conference tourney format. The old format—a one day tournament with 19 teams—was deemed to be unwieldy. Four qualifying satellite meets were held, with the winners advancing to a championship event at Central. The satellite matchups were by blind draw; the two best wrestlers sometimes met in the first round with the loser eliminated. Gossman and Central’s Tommy Turner did not like it one bit. “All the tough teams are in one bracket,” groused Gossman. “Mater Dei, North and Central will knock each other off. Reitz (In the Castle satellite) has a shoo-in.” “Our thirds and fourths are better than Jasper’s firsts and seconds,” agreed Turner. Under the format, Reitz asserted itself, putting the Panthers back in the winner’s circle. The 1978 SIAC satellite qualifier at Mt. Vernon began on an ominous note. En route to Mt. Vernon, the Mater Dei bus, piloted by Joe Gossman, hit an icy patch and spun off the road. “No big deal,” claimed Tim Boots. “We got out and pushed.” During the meet, the weather continued to deteriorate, rendering roads impassable. As a result, the teams from Mater Dei, Castle, Harrison and Central—along with 75 fans—spent the evening at Mt. Vernon High School. “We thought it was going to be a great night,” claimed John Schroeder. “There were a number of cheerleaders and mat maids for the other schools that had to stay. Sure enough, they put all of the girls on lock down. There was no way to get to them.” “The only action we had was Goebel’s (Mike Goebel, the head wrestling coach at Castle) boys throwing buckets of snowball at us,” said Tim Boots. Record snowfall made the Saturday final impossible. The will to complete the meet was irresistible, therefore, the SIAC coaches decided to hold the final on a Wednesday following the regional. To add additional spice, the finals were wrestled before the third place matches. As Mater Dei held a 3.5 point lead over Reitz, after the final, the consolation matches held special importance. The Wildcats held serve and claimed a 7.5 point win over their arch-rivals. Another blizzard hit Evansville in 1980. The 1979 meet left a bad taste in the mouths of many, so the coaches decided to scrub the 1980 affair. In 1981, following a mass exodus of SIAC schools, the event returned to a single-day event held at Castle. Riding titles by Chris Wildeman, Jeff Parkinson, Joe Bassemier and Matt Crowe, Mike Goebel’s Wildcats claimed a 37.5 win over the second-place Reitz Panthers. Winning the SIAC tournament from 1980-1993, the incumbent Wildcats faced a serious challenge it 1994. The SIAC meet was regarded as the toughest ever, featuring second-ranked Mater Dei, fourth-ranked Central and the sixth-ranked Castle Knights. “Close, but no cigar” came to an end as Grodie Crick’s Central Bears ended Mater Dei’s hammerlock on the SIAC, edging the ‘Cats 205.5 to 204.5. “This is a tremendous boost for our program,” said Crick, in his first-ever win over Mater Dei. The Bears accomplished the victory in the most dramatic fashion. Trailing Mater Dei in the team score, Central’s Josh Crick took the mat against Castle’s undefeated Patrick Mayes. Shaking off two previous losses to Mayes, Crick dominated, winning 8-3 and locking up the team title for Central. Mater Dei won the title back in 1995 and set a new mark for SIAC tournament performance in 2003, winning 13 weight classes. Claiming 13 champs and a third, the Wildcats lost one match on the day. An extremely tough field entered the 2010 SIAC meet, with Reitz finding itself with a fifth-state ranking while Mater Dei was regarded as sixth and Castle was seventh. Reitz coach Scott Ferguson was riding high going into the meet. Ferguson, a former Castle wrestler, had claimed a January dual meet victory over Mater Dei—his first as a wrestler or coach. Reitz’s depth won the day, as all fourteen wrestlers placed while Bryan Kuhn, Trevor Moody, Derek Dowdy and Blake Rueger claimed titles. On the eve of its 62nd annual meet, the SIAC championships are alive and well. Expect upsets, fiery coaches, long-standing rivalries, surprise domination—and highly partisan fan bases. SIAC Titles: Mater Dei- 41, New Albany- 8, Reitz- 5, Bloomington High- 5, Central- 1, Jasper- 1.

    Nick Lee question

Here are my thoughts on Red vs Lee II, if it happens.... I'm from Southern IN so I am a huge Nick Lee fan. Pros for Lee 1. I don't know who is in Nebraska's room or RTC, but I know Lee has some of the best competition in the country he sees daily. Don't know how much he works with Retherford, but there can't be anyone better right now to drill with and learn from. There has to be an infectious confidence when you can perform with that talent and have it all, including world class coaching in your corner. 2. Lee has done well at avenging losses. In fact, I'm not sure I can think of any loss of his that came against someone he already wrestled. He avenged freestyle losses to both Carter Happel and Mitchell McKee on his way to his Junior Fargo Title. Both had teched him in their first match. Other recent losses off the top of my head have been to Jaydin Eierman, Seth Gross, Yianni D, Kaden Gfeller and Brock Zacherl. The only one of those not ranked in the top 10 currently is Gfeller and that was a wild match that Nick seemed to be taking control of before losing position in a scramble and taking the fall. I'm not saying Nick would win a rematch against all of those, but I'd put my money on him beating Gfeller and Zacherl. The only wrestler I can find that Nick lost twice to is Zahid Valencia, which was more than a few years ago. Nick lost to him twice in the same tournament. Based on all of that, I think Nick would be ready to go against Chad and there would be no doubts or mind monsters. 3. Nick is hot right now and technically better than he was two years ago. 4. Schedule - this could go both ways... With 7 duals remaining, Nick will likely face two ranked opponents, both likely Top 10 ranked in Tommy Thorn and Joey McKenna (not to mention wrestling under the pressure of a possible swing match in a 1 vs 2 dual meet. He'll also face Purdue's Limmex this Friday who just beat Chad. Lastly, he could face Carter Happel of Iowa (see #2). Fortunately for him, both the Ohio State and Iowa matches will be at home with PSU's loud fan base behind him. This schedule could knock him back to reality a bit or propel him to a path for All-American. Pros for Chad 1. Chad won match 1 in a huge match that had his 4 year, undefeated record on the line. That's performing under pressure! 2. Chad has more college level matches under his belt and has faced better competition - Meredith twice, Alber, Jack, Thorn, Headlee this year, not to mention the experience he got last year wrestling unattached, including the 4th place Midlands finish. 3. Schedule - this could go both ways.... But Chad has struggled with losses in 2 of his last 3. With 7 duals remaining for Nebraska, Chad would face only one ranked opponent at this time, #19 Cole Weaver. I didn't count MSU's Gasca because he'll certainly drop from 20 after the thrashing he took yesterday. That could give him the opportunity to build his confidence back and get into a groove before the B1G Championships. It could also hurt him a bit without having top competition going in All of that said, I hope like hell Nick wins and think it is very possible he will. But Chad pulled off a major win the first time under a ton of pressure, so if I have to pick, I'd take Chad unless I see something between now and then that changes my mind. Like the first time, it could truly be a flip of the coin type match up. Both wrestlers are great representatives of IN wrestling and I hope both do well in the bigger picture.

We had a kid burn his mom's house down and he was arrested so he didn't make it to practice. Head coach still tries to convince me it was my fault because i moved practice time ahead an hour (Christmas break morning practice) and he didn't want to get out of bed so he started the house on fire. Seriously.

  33. I have to say this has made buscowrestling come out smelling like roses. I don't know why we always want to assume the worst of someone and the big school guy has to act like Busco's not worthy to make a decision because clearly the big schools should decide everything. All the guy did was volunteer, donate his time, and try to help. Then he is accused of shenanigans and demeaned. I would really hope coaches have more ethics than they are given credit for and there is a good reason why some stuff happens even if it appears bad to those without information on the scenario. I don't know anyone in this drama, but would say thanks to the guy who volunteered. I am sure none of them intended to screw kids over. Hopefully they do listen and make improvements and everyone learns from mistakes made. As a whole (with few exceptions), everyone in the sport ( I will make an exception for the IHSAA who I do believe doesn't care or know about the sport ) is more like your brother than your enemy.

Lee and M.Paris. Can make an argument that he is in serious discussions for the 3rd best I've right now. Great kid and Amazing wrestler. Keep up the good work TeamGarcia To say this is one of the toughest High School tournaments in the nation is not that far fetched. When ranked guys from Ohio are not even placing top 8 and one of best wrestlers in Indiana at 126 placed lower than what he is ranked shows it is just insanely competitive. It looks more like a tough Semi state Tournament or better. Id love to see Mater Dei,Cathedral, Brownsburg and Perry Meridian try and get in this.

Some from coaching and some from when I wrestled. Not making it to an event. Funny at first, but less humorous after. Phone call “Coach I won’t be able to make it out van is on fire.” This was a kid that’s always late and also missed a few meets. We are driving to the meet which goes past his road and sure enough a vans engine was on fire in sub-zero temperatures with emergency out there. We doubled back and picked the kids up on the way to the meet. Thankfully everyone was safe. Missed weight: Kid weighed out about 1.5lb under weight. Came into school the next day 2lb over. Kid: Coach all I had was water last night. Coach: Well how much water did you have. Kid: A few glasses coach. But that can’t be why because it’s clear so doesn’t weigh much. Second best was when our HWT didn’t make weight. Kid: All I had was fruit and vegetables Coach. Coach:No way you gained that much weight just eating some fruit and vegetable. Kids brother: He ate a crap ton of them all night long coaches. I told him to stop but he said it’s fine they are healthy foods so he wont gain weight. Not coming to practice the day before the first meet so couldn’t wrestle at that meet: Kid: Coach you said we had to be clean shaven by that practice or we would be in trouble. Coach: Yes. Kid: Well my mom hadn’t been to Walmart yet, so I went home. Coach: You know we have extra razors and shaving cream in the Med kit right. Kid: Yes coach, but my mom said I have sensitive skin so she only buys me the special kind.

  38. To answer your questions about any influence that may have in the wrestling community all I can tell you is that I joined the association. I volunteered to help with some committees that they had, volunteered as a regional rep. I ran for the position of secratary twice unopposed. Literally any influence that I have is available to anyone willing to put in some time to help with the IHSWCA. In terms of our wrestling program (which I am not sure has anything at all to do with my ability to volunteer for the coaches association) we are a small community about 10 minutes from Northwest Fort Wayne. We are not Prairie Heights or Adams Central, but I have to admit that I am a little surprised that a small school wrestling aficionado like yourself didn't know we finished 2nd, 1st, and 5th at the first three team states. Thats not to say that we are the greatest team in the state, but we have done some good things for a small team, and are generally fairly competitive for a school our size. Are you advocating that only big schools have a say in the IHSWCA? Is there some sort of success factor you feel should be in place for IHSWCA volunteers?

  39. This is up there with the craziest things i've seen on this site. My varsity was sick. My back-up was ineligible at the time of the match. Your varsity 120 and 152 didn't wrestle that day, no one is making insane accusations that you were ducking kids. Don't be ridiculous, there is not reason why I wouldn't have my 85 pound kid wrestle yours and let him wrestle against Northrop. Quit trying to make up something that doesn't exist. Great idea. BTW we are either in a dual or a tournament with every sectional school except for two- Bishop Dwenger (who we used to dual, but had a scheduling change) and Huntington North (who just joined this year). I have no clue but out of curiosity how many do you see? We are not running from anyone, or trying to cheat any system. We make every effort to see every sectional team. Your accusations on this are complete and total nonsense.

  41. Man, I have been out of Indiana wrestling for a while but after finally getting to page six I think I understand why all the fuss. So the loser of a sectional pig tail match is out of the tournament? Isn't this the real problem here? I can't believe there isn't more outrage over that huge flaw in the system if I am understanding this correctly. To address JMILL and the others who say you should always throw a kid out there to take a beating instead of forfeiting, can you please understand that you don't have the same problems as others do and that maybe a coach has a reason for protecting a kid. For example, we have a freshman 215lb kid who will eventually be a very good wrestler but weighs around 195 and has 1 year of experience and is clearly not ready to wrestle a returning state qualifier level senior at 215. He has 1 varsity win and usually does not make it through the first period but fights his butt off and takes his lumps because he is the only option for the team. I want that kid to continue in the sport. If I decide to forfeit a match to protect that kid and keep him from getting hurt or completely demoralized and drive him to quit, I think that is more important than your 1 in 8 chance of drawing into a pig tail bracket at sectional or allowing your kid to get 15 takedowns. The kid is not a snowflake, he is the best lineman on our freshman team. I feel it is my duty to decide what is best for that kid and his retention in the sport. You can't expect a kid with 1 year in the sport to think that getting pinned in the first period repeatedly is fun. He should really be JV but there are matches that kid can compete in at a varsity level, but they probably aren't against a team like Brownsburg. If that means you get a forfeit, that does stink but it is not the end of the world and it will not cause your kid to quit. I can't build a program if I can't keep kids like that, but more importantly we shouldn't run kids out of the sport just because we have a hole in our roster.

    Seeding Meeting Change???

#SeedingSnowflakes.... Sweet Jesus, next people will come up a stupid idea of splitting wrestling up into classes because Tommy deserves a handout bc he goes to CornBread High and it’s not fair to wrestle those big schools.... For being tough and manly wrestlers you all can sure be whiners....

  43. Adding to MattyB post with my two cents, this is bad for Indiana wrestling. This will result in a drop in quality competition mat time for good kids from smaller, developing programs. Teams will be dropped or strong teams will pull out of duals with small teams to avoid being penalized for forfeits. Developing teams will find it harder and harder to get back onto a schedule that exposes their talented kids to other quality talent that pushes and raises their skill level. A greater rift will be formed between large programs and small programs resulting in a stagnation in the smaller program talent development. As a whole, this hurts those kids in that situation and has an overall impact of lowering the depth of Indiana wrestling talent.

  44. I guess this topic could be inter woven with another topic then..................because if the coaches send their kid out there against a much more dominant opponent instead of giving a FF and then the dominant opponent takes him down 27 times in a match you guys will not be happy with that either. So the coach saves the kid from that and just FF's and now you are not happy with that. I thought this was a sport for tough kids (not basketball) where we all know what we are getting into (coaches and wrestlers). IF a kid is in the weight class on a team then he should wrestle if he is there and do the best he can. If the dominant wrestler takes him down 27 times in a match and the kid doesn't like it he should do something to stop getting taken down. It seems we are trying to protect the weak and punishing the stronger kids (i.e. penalizing for too many TD's, and for someone FF'ing to them). How about just stepping to the line and wrestling and making stronger better members of society out of these boys ? I am sure this is going to draw some nasty comments back at me but come on people !!!!
    1 point
  45. Here is a scenario that is 100% true and going to happen in a couple weeks. My kid is 15-6 right now(10-6 with forfeits taken out), other team's kid is 14-6(13-6 with forfeits taken out). We are 1-1 with common opponents. When we wrestled this team they forfeited to our guy so our win doesn't count. The kid wrestled later in the day. So now my kid is being punished for having too many forfeits and on top of that, the other team not wrestling against us and preventing us from a head to head. How many times will this happen vs. the kid with 10 forfeits snagging a seed? We had a top 10 strength of schedule last year and we averaged 3.4 forfeits per wrestler and had one with 8 forfeits.
