  1. Since this was the year of the firsts!! Rossville - Noah Weaver Garrett - Chase Leech

  2. #1 calling out individual kids is something that you need to refrain from or else there will be a forced vacation from posting. #2 ask Coach Peck said, it comes up every year. The solution is hairy as you cannot penalize a kid for being hurt with points. The way NCAA does it with choice of position for the injury time is the best way to do it in my gracious opinion. While this isn't a punishment via points it gives the other wrestler an advantage that they must make use of.

  3. Yeah, our past way of discussing "greatest ever" where we put Tsirtsis over Escobedo because Escobedo had a loss (out of state to a kid highly ranked in the nation)--has to get completely thrown out the window now. I mean Hockaday, our #1-ranked pound-for-pound kid, got a DNP at the Iron Man. If he goes on to win a 4th title, continues to improve nationally, and ends up a multiple-time college All-American--do we put him behind historical guys who had only 2 or 3 career losses but didn't compete out of state, just because of the record in the state finals program? It's definitely a new era.

  4. I assume you mean just during their high school career? Otherwise (and I know you know this), Jason Tsirtsis also was a 4 timer for CP (though with 2 losses) but also was an NCAA champion.

  5. As logical as this sounds I would hate for a referee to be on the hook to determine if the athlete is injured during action. That seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen and refs have enough to deal with.

  6. It is up to the coaches (the adults in the situation) to try to teach the proper lessons such as integrity, accountability, and character. I know many coaches will teach kids to take advantage of the way the rule is written to gain an advantage and they believe this is the right lesson to teach (use any advantage you can to gain an edge even if it goes against the integrity of the rule as long as you aren't "breaking" any rules). I disagree with this mindset, I believe you should uphold the spirit and integrity of the rule. A win is not worth sacrificing the life lessons that this great sport teaches such as perseverance, discipline, self accountability, character, and integrity. You do not take "blood" time, unless there is blood, and you don't take "injury" time unless there is an injury. If you call getting out of an unfavorable situation, or taking a breather because you're tired an injury, we have a vastly different definition of what an injury is, and we have a vastly different opinion on what we should be teaching our athletes. We are in the business of developing good humans first, and great athletes as a byproduct of teaching such lessons. If you are teaching the other way around, I believe you are doing your student-athletes a disservice. Just one coach's humble opinion.

  10. Every year for the last fifty (that is about my length of recollection) people always gripe about misuse of injury time. I think that sometimes injury time is abused, but there is nothing to be done about that except maybe scoring one point any time an injury time is taken when the Official determines a score is imminent. Other than that I fear we begin to penalize a kid who is injured and that should not happen. I thinik most coaches, if they wil admit it, have had a kid who faked it to get a rest. I remember once back in the early eighties when my guy was wretling in the Regional and in the middle of a flurry he began to scream. The Official stopped the action, and I quickly moved to him. I told him to lie still and asked him where he was injured,. He looked up and said, "I'm not injured coach I just need a break." I wanted to kill him, ir was embarassing eventhough no one knew. I told him to lay there until I helped him up. I got him up and had him walk around, and then he went back to wrestling. The "break" did not help as he got beat fairly soundly. THe next week at praxctice I made him run each day. He asked why and I told him it he needed a break during the match he must not be in shape. There may have been others, but nearly as blatant.

  11. That's why Silas is practicing today, so he can step it up and not bore you anymore. On a side note Coach Swain and Curry have never coached anyone to stall, that idea cracks me up. They demand you to score points and punch(figure of speech) your opponent in the mouth no matter how much your up or down in a match. Being soft is not tolerated by those dudes.

  12. Just my opinion but Damon Hummel is hands down the best wrestler in Rochester history. If 215 was a thing he is easily a two time champ.

  14. Damon Hummel was getting it done back when there was not a 215 weight class. If there had been, I think you can make the case that he would have been a 2x state champion.

Also, not listed above was Nick Bova who was a three-time state medalist in high school and a two-time NCAA Division III All-American for Wabash College.

Hard to say that the Angel Escobedo, Alex Tsirtsis, Matt Coughlin and Blake Maurer era wasn't the most fun time to watch for Indiana wrestling.

  22. Very interesting twists on this thread... Interesting take by some posters criticizing some wrestlers and their parents for making decisions to compete this season vs. not due to injuries... A few thoughts... these athletes only get 4 years to compete in HS for the sport they've trained in since most were 4 years old. To give up a season when a physician says it's your choice, it's not surprising most chose to continue competing... There's no medical red shirt in high school sports. Guys like Preston Haines who missed a season that he'd likely have been the state champ, know what it feels like to miss out, so no surprise he wanted to continue... Parker Reynolds defied statistics with his recovery, read Gregg Doyel's IndyStar article for info there... Guys like Reynolds, Brewer, Haines did all they could to compete to help the team win the title this year and didn't want to let their teammates and coaches down. Additionally for what it is worth, Brewer wrestled lights out at Evansville and you could tell that his lower extremity issue wasn't affecting him as much on that Saturday as it was at state... So, if a poster wants to opine about the rule, i get it. Casting shade at athletes from certain schools to further your gripe is probably not necessary at all and makes issues personal imo...

  25. Well this topic went a bit sideways. The intent of my original post and topic was that we as coaches have a responsibility to see that injury time isn't abused. There is a difference between an injury and using the injury timeout to collect your thoughts, breath, escape a situation, etc. If we as a wrestling community are ok with using injury timeout as a strategy, well then my friends, we are no better than basketball and that's a direction I would rather not take. Also, single class wrestling sucks, there, that should get this topic headed in the right direction...

Wyatt Krejsa bonus pointed everyone in the state leading into the state championship match. Hunter May had a very dominant season as well and held the match to a regular decision 13-6. I'd have to check the stats (it's been a long season) but I think Hunter May landing that headlock in the finals may have been the only offense points given up by Wyatt to an Indiana opponent this season. Wyatt had a hell of a year and put in so much work!!

  30. Watching this Iowa vs Wisc dual and Rathjen takes injury time as he’s getting taken down. Official gives the injury time, Rathjen continues after a short break and doesn’t give the 3 pt td. Reminds me of one of my biggest issues watching wrestling this weekend. Coaches allowing their kids to take a time out when the going gets tough. Weak. One of the countless things that separates wrestling from the stupid sports like basketball, no timeouts when it’s getting real, you have to deal with it. Dissapointing the programs that are ok with taking a breather for that mental break when adversity has set in.

  34. The best way to curb that is for injury time that the coach cannot attend to the wrestler and a trainer/doctor must attend to them. Along with not allowing water or anything like that.

I have a first hand experience of it. I’m not sure how much he sucked down or how he even managed it, but he felt every bit of a a 150lber in a 125lb weight class. Definitely wouldn’t meet todays weight certification requirements.

  40. The way Weaver picked apart 2023 State Runner Up and a very accomplished wrestler and athlete that I known since he’s 4 years old in McConnell excellent defense wrestler . You don’t score very many points on that type of wrestler . When the ref raised his hand . I looked at Asa and said . Explicit word .WOW ! Where is Rossville ? Then Gunner who has very tight matches with Kaden this year UTB, scoring was a minimum and he does it again to him. Gunner and Veazy are tight matches . I wouldn’t be surprised if Weaver scores same amount of points on Veazy . Matchups make or brake wrestlers . Weaver I think is a bad matchup for all 3 .

  42. All true Coach Snyder. Evansville/Mooresville is brutal. Dominic Brown at 126 lost at regional to the 3rd place finisher Reynolds and drew the eventual State Runner up Schaefer in the ticket round. Mooresville Regional also included the eventual Champion Rioux. So Evansville at 126 had the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers at state and guess what, Brown holds a victory over the 4th and 6th place finishers at the weight class. Coach Snyder and I talked about the fact that you can very well lose the Team State title at the Regional.

  43. 150 was stacked this year for sure - off the top of my head Evansville had the State Champ, State Runner-up, and 4th place finisher. Plus, Tommy Gibbs who was ranked 3rd. He lost to Champ and drew into runner-up. I watched the 3rd place match at 150 and it made me hate our system. Hats off to both wrestlers in a great match, but Tommy beat both of them. 120 in our Regional you had the State Champ and 4th place finisher....Plus Preston Haines. Preston lost to the 4th place finisher and drew into the State Runner-up...so you had at semi-state #1, #2, #4 and Preston who has placed 2nd and 3rd at State. There were other great wrestlers at 120 and 150. Those are just the ones off the top of my head. If you don't have a vested interest in another semi-state, swing by Evansville next year. You will see dudes wrestling in the round to go that could be a semi-final state match.

  45. I know it happens at all semi-states some, but there were so many state placer level dudes left in Evansville. Not just from Brownsburg...studs going down for a lot of schools. It is freaking brutal - win your regional and draw into a top ranked guy who lost to another top ranked guy. Lose at regional to a state high placer and draw into another high state placer. This is always a concern for any semi-state, but it is freaking bananas at the Evansville Semi-State.

  48. Thank you so much. If only that Krejsa kid didn't get lucky in their quarterfinals match, CJ could've won it all. I kid of course. CJ said Krejsa was the only kid that got faster as the match went on. Edit. I'm really proud of CJ because he fought through adversity at the beginning of the year. We lost my dad in late October, and he was a massive supporter of CJs wrestling career. He never missed any my son's matches.
