    Preston Haines

Thank you to everyone who has reached out regarding Preston. Results of a CT scan and other tests have come back. Nothing is broken and he will make a full recovery. As far as what happened, the Mater Dei wrestler had been winning the entire match. An illegal slam was called. It was not intentional. Whether it was an illegal slam or not, I don’t really care. We were never taking a dive. Brownsburg doesn’t roll like that. It goes against everything we believe in. If I thought it was intentional, It would be a different story. There is no doubt in our mind that it was just a result of two dudes trying to punch their ticket to state. It was pretty chaotic as all of this was happening as I’m sure you can all imagine. Given that it was a neck/head injury, I wanted to give medical people access to Preston. Once they had time to check Preston out, I took that opportunity to talk to Preston. There was never any talk or consideration of taking a dive. Preston would never do that. He was in a lot of pain and upset. He has had a lot of adversity this season. He tore his ACL at IHPO and has been working through that pain and frustration all season. I just explained to Preston what had happened and that I was going to forfeit the match. I told him we were losing…and it would not be fair to take the trip to state away from the Mater Dei kid. Preston agreed and said he would never do that. There was no reversal of the call or anything. I just went up to officials and said we are forfeiting the match. Whoever said Preston was walking around saw someone else. He was taken out on a stretcher and to the emergency room. Snyder

  4. Different standard? Pretty sure all should be held to a standard of respect, dignity, and sportsmanship for our youth that look up to and emulate these guys especially an athlete like the W that has been a tremendous athlete that I am sure kids look up to! Has nothing to do with a singlet. More of a moral obligation and maturity! Not sure what gesture you are talking about but the one I know and seen was bad! Let's not make it about the W and face what it was, embarrassing for the sport.

  5. Let's give CP their due. This team is probably the best ever in Indiana. Love watching them. You are never going to find evidence of breaking the IHSAA rules. But let's be completely honest here. When you have a wrestling community like CP, and you had the great school system like they have, and a few other things that make wrestling and or moving to CP beneficial, why wouldn't you wrestle for them. I mean I bleed purple but if I had a son wrestling right now they would 100% be going to CP. I am sure they, coaches/parents/wrestlers, don't have a recruiting budget or go out there and say 'Transfer to CP.' The system does the recruiting for them. So, you are right let's drop it cause no one is ever going to have evidence, but let's also not lie to ourselves and say there is no recruiting going on.

    Stalling

Something needs to be done about wrestlers who wrestle on the edge of the mat. Last 2 years Center Grove 190 against Purdy last year Henry this year and anybody good last year and this year wrestles so you can’t get points against him it is the worst thing to watch. Goes out of bounds probably 10-15 times anytime close to score and stalling is never called until crowd goes crazy for minutes. And officials are so different on calling stalling it needs to be fixed.

    Stalling

Stalling and wrestling on the "EOM" has many variable meanings across states. What version do we want to watch in Indiana (or more importantly what do we need in the rulebooks...to compete out of state)? I prefer college out of bounds and aggressive stall calls.

    Stalling

I hate how it seems the same actions get called in the 3rd period and never do in the 1st. Saw a kid's season end because of stall calls this year in overtime. Had those same calls been made in the 1st, that wouldn't have been the deciding factor.

  18. What a flop by the IHSAA… “all session”, “session 2”, and “session 3” events not open for parents to buy seats like Ticketmaster said they would be. So now parents have to wait and compete in general public sale Wednesday in order to watch their kid wrestle on Saturday? This doesn’t seem like a difficult thing to get right, but then I remember we are dealing with the IHSAA

  23. I don’t think bad wrestling exists up north. I am originally from Michigan City, Indiana, but I went to school in Indianapolis as I moved with my mom and brothers while my dad stayed up north. I didn’t start wrestling until eighth grade, but I quickly noticed A LOT of the best wrestlers were coming from up north. I’ve always considered the Region to be “top heavy” with the top-ranked wrestlers often being from that area. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a big metro area, but it’s certainly my favorite place to be because there’s no place like home, and the wrestling is top tier. I don’t think bad wrestling exists in that area. Every opponent I had from there was tough, each school had a solid schedule, if you competed in the DAC, you had some guts, and every wrestler up there had a certain air of toughness about them. This isn’t to say Northern, Northeastern, Eastern, Western, Central or Southern Indiana aren’t great and competitive, but some of the toughest opponents I remember were from the Region because they were (and still are) a hotbed of wrestling that gave my teammates and I some of our hardest matches. There’s always some D1 talent lurking there and a huge concentration of high placing wrestlers.

  28. By STEVE KRAH stvkrh905@gmail.com Bradin Daniels became the first Union City Junior/City wrestler to qualify for the IHSAA State Finals in a dozen years when the junior won the 126-pound title at the 2024 Fort Wayne Semi-State. Before the Feb. 10 accomplishment, the last Indian to punch his ticket to the state tournament’s last stage was Kyle Walters at 160 in 2011-12, a season in which he want 40-4. As a Union City assistant coach, Walters has been in Daniels’ corner along with Indians head coach Kevin Lawrence. “He’s just a hard worker,” says Walters of Daniels. “He’s worked for it all season.” Away from the mat, Lawrence owns a construction company and Walters is a software engineer. Because of NBA All-Star Game activities, the site of the State Finals has been moved this year from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to the Ford Center in Evansville. The first round is Friday, Feb. 16. There will be two sessions (152-285 and 106-144). First-round survivors compete Saturday, Feb. 17. Daniels heads to the Pocket City at 38-2 on the season. Union City is a Randolph County school with an enrollment around 250. “I did it for these guys over here,” says Daniels, who pointed to the UC faithful that came to cheer Saturday at Allen County Memorial Coliseum and saw him defeat NorthWood junior Will Hahn (pin in 2:42), Marion freshman Hixon Love (6-0 decision), Delta senior Neal Mosier (6-5 overtime decision) and Jay County senior Cody Rowles (8-4 decision). “I did it for my coaches. I did it for me. I did it for my family (including parents Devon and Samantha Daniels and brothers Gage and Blayne). “They all knew I had it in me. This year it changed.” Says Lawrence, “it was more the way he wrestled. He’s more patient now then he was before. He now knows that all he has to do is win a match. He doesn’t necessarily have to do it all in the first period. “He can wrestle a three-period match now and go six minutes.” Daniels said he became serious about wrestle in sixth grade. “I placed second at Middle School State and I was like ‘Wow!,’” says Daniels. “My freshman year I missed weight at sectional and last year I got in my head because I had to face the No. 1 seed.” Daniels gave himself a pep talk going into 2023-24. “I told myself there’s nothing stopping me this year,” says Daniels. “You’re going to go and win it whether you like it or not.” Gage and Blayne Daniels both wrestled for UC. “They’re over there rooting me on,” says Bradin. “They tell me that no matter what else is going on, just wrestle.” Other season highlights for the youngest Daniels boy include winning his second Tri-Eastern Conference championship (pinning Winchester junior Isaiah Spurlin in the finals) and placing first for the second straight Bill Kerbel Invitational at New Haven (beating Northfield freshman Elijah Gahl by 13-0 major decision for the crown). Daniels also earned his first Jay County Sectional title (besting Rowles 4-0 in the championship bout). He placed second at the Jay County Regional (losing to Rowles by fall in the finals) then won the Fort Wayne Semi-State. As a sophomore, Daniels was a sectional runner-up and came in fourth at regional and did not place at semi-state. Bradin came in third at the past two East Central Indiana Classic tournaments. “He’s always had the ability,” says Lawrence. “Little things here and there he was able to put together this year. “That’s been the difference.” The past two seasons, Daniels competed at 126. He began the current season at 132, but continued to lose weight and went back to 126. Union City’s Matt Taylor placed fourth at the State Finals in 1991. Besides Taylor in 1990 and Walters in 2012, other state qualifiers include Kyle Anderson in 2007, Zach Woodbury in 2004, Jim Garrett in 1992 and Rob Bousman in 1987.

    Best Matches to Rewatch?

All I know is every coaches meeting I have attended this year the head official stressed that the IHSAA wanted to specifically emphasize respect and sportsmanship this season. The head official almost always followed that up with a notice that the referees would be vigilant of any "out of characteristic" behaviors during or at the conclusion of a match. At some events, the referees even gave examples such as excessive celebrations or and taunting being among the situations the IHSAA was concerned about cracking down on. Then the officials pointed out that coaches needed to make sure their wrestlers were aware that any Unsportsman-like Conduct Penalty would carry over with the wrestlers through the entire course of that event. With two ULC or one Flagrant Misconduct resulting in that wrestler being eliminated from the competition and in this case the entire tournament series. I'm assuming a very similar speech was provided at all of the state's tournament series sites across the state. While emotions do occasionally run high with teenagers in this sport and I hate to see anyone eliminated from the State series over one quick decision, I'm not sure any coach or wrestler can honestly say the warning wasn't very clear all season on what could potentially happen to the wrestler if things got out of hand on the mat.

  32. Pretty much we are pushed to go purchase all session passes Wednesday for our other kids and significant others if divorced and some for us just in case. Which then lowers the amount of attendance that can actually come as we will be on there fast purchasing those tickets. It was not thought through in the slightest. It would have just been easier to let us purchase all session passes as we will be there so would stay and watch the whole weekend.

  43. I would like to ask for your support. In my opinion most can live with and understand several challenges with ticketing; fees, assigned seating, etc. What is not acceptable is the chance that any wrestler making a state finals appearance may not have a ticket for someone special. 448 (2 per kid) tickets is not enough. The IHSAA is standing firm that everyone has the same chance to get a ticket, that sounds fair but we all know there will be someone special or supportive of a wrestler that will not be able to purchase before selling out. If ten tickets were given per kid that is 2240 tickets. There may be a kid needing 12, 15, or even 20+ but I am sure we can agree that two is not enough. The IHSAA has told me that there are about 4000 tickets needed for this event for all the folks involved. This number includes the 448 participant "family" tickets as well as 196 tickets for the 98 (2 per) participating schools. If the venue has a capacity of roughly 9600, that would leave 4600 tickets for general public to fight over. As the wrestling community would be very disappointed if the number of general tickets was 4000, it would not be half as disappointing than if a wrestler who has trained and dreamed for years of his or her participation and to find out their special person may not be able to attend. Think of all the examples: A few come to mind, grandparents, we all know a kid that has multiple parents, step parents, maybe an important aunt uncle sibling training partner club coach etc. At two the kid has to choose at 6,8 or 10 the kid's support group will not be left to chance. I was told tonight that the IHSAA has a 19 member board and that the IHSAA oranization would change this rule if this group agreed. My suggestion: We need support from 98 schools or more. Possible Indiana Mat could help with the administration of a polite list of supporters. Please do not add other arguments, this is only about allowing a family (whomever that might mean to a kid) to have the ability to support their wrestler. Remember waiting in a cue to select tickets last year and being at 350 on the list. Not fair to that special person. These special people do not need the stress and anxiety. I dont think this would crush overall attendance. How would it hurt. Please understand the IHSAA has a tall task on this and all events. In my opinion they are missing a priority with this decision. Currently, they do not agree. This argument should be shared now by the mass not after the weekend by a few folks that were unable to attend. They will just be told that it will not be a problem next year back at gainsbridge. Thanks for your time in reading this lengthy post.

  44. Crown Point received 3 Unsportsmanlikes yesterday. Including after this match when he stands over the losing wrestler and calls him a little beeyotch. Then instead of learning his lesson the wrestlers goes to the Merrillville corner and tries to get into it with the kids brother and dad (you know the guy who has the lack of maturity). Oh wait, because holier than thou Crown Point coaches have such great maturity. Last week telling a kid to go eat a d. And then the same coach arguing a clear slam yesterday. And then proceeding to walk over to the injured wrestler and intimidate the coaches and wrestler to get up. And then another coach coming out of the stands to argue the same slam. (Something he shouldn’t have been allowed to do anyway.) The same coaches that during a match at Team State threw a rule book after all three of them went to the table to argue a call that didn’t go their way. (Also, not allowed as only 1 coach may go to the table to argue.) This year has become too much. If my AD got 3 Unsportsmanlike reports in a day, my job would be posted the next day.

    Eliminate Semi-State

Clay Guenin was a regional champion with a 36-1 record and has wins over numerous state qualifiers and medalists, yet he was rewarded with Luke Penola in the ticket round. The same scenario was the case for Tommy Gibbs, Preston Haines, Guillermo Rivera, Jaylen Young, Hruai Lian, Jacob McClure, etc. Them losing their matches isn’t the issue. It’s the fact that they proved they were among the best wrestlers in the state all year, had to wrestle another top talent in the qualifying match, and didn’t have the opportunity to wrestle back to be among the best in the group while in some cases, the common opponents they shared with the person who beat them advanced facing less quality opponents. That’s not dissing the kids, either, it’s just the facts of the matter. If you don’t see how seeding based on a full body of work done throughout the season to create separation and full consolation rounds to ensure wrestlers get their rightful chance could fix that, then we don’t need to be having this discussion. If you want to keep semi-state, that’s fine, but then discussion about eliminating sectionals or regionals needs to take place. The reason I say Indiana has a subpar state tournament is because of the long, plodding month-long journey just to get to the state finals, there aren’t any consolations, and because one week in the first three is an unnecessary rehash of what could’ve already taken place. A lot of people don’t want to change it because they either aren’t positively receptive towards change or because they hold the old head “Well, if I suffered, they should too” mentality. There isn’t always testament of who the best wrestlers are, so therefore, we don’t always get a good indicator of how deep or good the field truly is as compared to other states, but that’s also not the IHSAAs priority either. So, until there is change at that level, we won’t see much, but that doesn’t mean you stop voicing what is right for the sport and cease work on improving the system.

  49. Yeah, unfortunately we couldn't name everyone. We just did a top 25 of all weights and try to go off the big tournments. Most on the list were either middle school, folkstyle, freestyle, greco, champs or did well at tulsa, super 32, or Nationals. We'll be putting out an updated list soon. Some of the weight classes last weekend were really loaded, like 100, 106, and 113. St. Laurent and Dowty both were returning Middle School champs and took 5th this year, still really good but just shows how loaded these weights were.
