  1. Congratulations Conner Gimson on a National Title, and Matt Gimson finishing 3rd. I personally wanted to see the brother vs Brother finals matchup that I have seen behind closed doors that usually ended like most brother disputes do... congratulations to coach Pompei and his staff well earned! Side note: Jimtown legend Colin Crume coaching Jimtown legend Conner Gimson in the finals was a thing of beauty!

  4. As mentioned, Bellmont and Mater Dei were the bullies of their sectional, regional, and semi state areas like NC. They had many individuals battling for individual titles. Also fought battles in the single class team state duals tournaments. There was no love loss but there was and is respect. They even took the rivalry to the basketball state championship (which Mater Dei prevailed).

  5. Lol I'm just saying those 3 teams were represented nicely at state every year and great matches amongst these 3 legendary Programs..NC finished back 2 back state runner ups losing to EMD in the current Format of team scoring and the following year NC lost in the Dual team state format to EMD as well.. NC and EMD were both nationally ranked.. That NC team sent 8 to state with 6 PLACERS. The crazy yet very sad part is, that my cousin Bubba Dickerson was the reigning HW state champ that passed away before that 96 season therefore NC had to bump guys around in their line up to match up with EMD best way possible.. So nc more than likely has 9 qualifiers and 7 PLACERS and Pinning machine Bubba would've made a huge difference in the team state finals where NC lost a war to EMD..IMHO that nc team was one of the best Dual teams to never win it..NC at one time,NC won 106 straight dual matches over a 3 season span and a 4 season span of having 177-4 dual record in the mid 90s.. Those NC teams also had ridiculous team stats and one that stands out to me was the varsity gave up less that 20 pins all season in 95 or 96 iirc... Belmont in 96 had 6 state qualifier,3 PLACERS with the state Champ Jason Baker... Great teams that are engrained in the rich history of Indiana Wrestling.. NC legendary coach Rex Peckinpaugh Retired couple years ago with not only Indianas Most wins but the entire nation winning 1001 dual meets.. His record was a staggering, 1001-300-3 over 40 years.. Coaching 91 state qualifiers, 43 PLACERS,4 state runner ups and a state champ, 30+ sectionals, 13 regionals and 6 semi state titles.. We are testing doing our best to get NC back winning titles and steadily producing not only great Wrestlers but wonderful human beings that will be successful in life.

  9. I had to do a pretty deep dive into our history to get a good all-time roster for LaPorte but I think I have something now. There are some good wrestlers for LaPorte that wrestled way long ago (we had two state champs close to 100 years ago) but I won't include anybody that wrestled longer than 41 years ago (1980 is the cutoff) 106: Ashton Jackson | X, 1st, --, -- 113: Jason Milton | X, X, 5th, 7th 120: Ian Barclay | X, 5th, 8th, 5th 126: Ron West | X, X, 3rd, X 132: Mark Scott | X, X, X, 1st 138: Mike Bartley | X, Qualifier, 7th, X (I almost made it on the list ) 145: Guy Corbett | X, X, X, 2nd 152: Jeff Henry | X, X, X, Qualifier 160: Joel Baker | X, X, 5th, X 170: Vincent Stigler | X, Qualifier, Qualifier, 1st 182: Jerry Jackson | X, Qualifier, 1st, 3rd 195: Matt Graham | X, X, 7th, 1st (Gave up no takedowns his senior year I believe) 220: Kyle Simpkins | X, X, X, Qualifier 285: Landon Blackburn | X, X, X, Qualifier Luckily, Indianamat has a page with every team's history, so this list was a lot easier to make than I thought it would be. Overall, we have 5 state champs on this list, and only one runner up, so when we do get people under the lights, it's probably good to bet on us.

  10. I used to do this topic on here a few years ago, and wanted to bring it back to see the all-time best lineup for some particular schools in Cathedral and Perry Meridian... Weight Class | Name | Best Finish (Career) Cathedral 106 | Evan Dickey | State Runner-Up 113 | Lance Ellis | State Champion 120 | Brandon Wright | State Champion 126 | Zeke Seltzer | State Champion 132 | Breyden Bailey | State Champion 138 | Logan Bailey | State Runner-Up 145 | Jordan Slivka | State Champion 152 | Vinny Corsaro | State Runner-Up 160 | Brian Harvey | State Champion 170 | Ben Harvey | State Runner-Up 182 | Blake Rypel | State Champion 195 | Ben Stewart | State 3rd 220 | Matt Hasbrook | State Champion 285 | Wesley Bernard | State Champion Not listed: Zach Melloh, Tyler Willis, Elliott Rodgers, Lukasz Walendzak, Jacob Obst, Holden Parsons, Alex Mosconi Perry Meridian 106 | Toby Billerman | State 3rd 113 | Alex Cottey | State Champion 120 | Sam Fair | State Runner-Up 126 | Jared McKinley | State Champion 132 | Matthew Koontz | State Runner-Up 138 | Brandon James | State Runner-Up 145 | Cody LeCount | State Champion 152 | Nick Walpole | State Champion 160 | Kirk Johnson | State 3rd 170 | Noah Warren | State Champion 182 | Jake Masengale | State Runner-Up 195 | Tristen Tonte | State Runner-Up 220 | Nate Moore | State Champion 285 | Chico Adams | State Champion Not listed: Donte Winfield, Frank Hammond, Brett Johnson, Brooks Davis, Brian Vest, Jacob Tonte, Kevin Clem, Eric Aue, Ngun Uk, Cornelious Elliott, Brayden Lowery, Logan Cooper, C.J. Martin, Riley McClurg, Nick Bova, Gill Journey, Shaun Richardson In a hypothetical dual meet, I have PM winning a close one. Dickey over Billerman MD 4-0 Ellis over Cottey Dec 7-0 Wright over Fair Dec 10-0 Seltzer over McKinley Dec 13-0 B. Bailey over Koontz Dec 16-0 James over L. Bailey Dec 16-3 LeCount over Slivka Fall 15-9 Walpole over Corsaro Dec 16-12 Brian Harvey over Johnson Dec 19-12 Warren over Ben Harvey Dec 19-15 Rypel over Masengale MD 23-15 Tonte over Stewart Dec 23-18 Moore over Hasbrook Dec 23-21 Adams over Bernard 23-24 You can argue whether or not at 145 Slivka gives up a fall to LeCount, but LeCount in 2014 at 145 did in fact pin both Tommy Forte and Ben Harvey and pinned 2x champ Jake Covaciu the year prior, while en route to repeat Slivka did give up a major to Donnell Washington earlier in the season, so I’m going with the bonus on LeCount’s side.

Start the Springsteen Glory Days song......Early 90's EMD and Lawrence North had all out wars. FCfighter170 and casualwrestlingfan probably remember the Indiana's Best tournament back in the 90's. Absolute WAR! I think they'd invite the top 5 or six teams and everyone would wrestle everyone. There were no brackets so there was no hiding. It was at MD one time I can't remember if i was a frosh or soph. I do know my only shot at wrestling in that tournament was my senior year in 94/95 we got a ton of snow and did not make the trip. We were in the practice room when the decision was made to not go, we showered and met at Pizza Hut, I stuffed my face full of pizza and was probably sick after that. We probably would have been a better team had we been able to make the trip but we DID bond quite well that afternoon. We won state that year thanks to our 6 qualifiers one state champ a runner up and several placers. Man those were the days! Wish I was still in that good of shape !

  23. So just the info I know... He did judo at a high level and then started wrestling. In high school he wrestled for Jay County like 2005-2009 Placed 2nd and 4th at 103 and 119 Losses to Alex Johns (ER) & Ethan Raley (IC) Wrestled at the University of Indianapolis at like 125/133 Left after like his sophomore year, uindy was still in transition to the new head coach. Think he might have been one of Warthens first recruits. Left for the west coast and been climbing the ladder ever since

  28. By Drew Hughes Women’s wrestling in college has been on the rise for the past few years with 17 new programs being added this year alone. The National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships will feature NCAA women’s teams. The National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships will be taking place March 6, 2021 and will be held at Tiffin University where 2 Indiana athletes will be competing. Jaryn Strong who is a freshman at Adrian College took 4th place at Northeast Regional to qualify for the tournament. In high school Strong wrestled for Terre Haute South where she was a 4-time Girls State placer and a finalist her senior year. She will be in the 123-pound bracket where she will face off against Trinity Berry of Tiffin University first round. Jasime Hale of Pike is another freshman qualifier for Adrian. She won the regional and comes into nationals with a 5-6 record. She will have Madison Horn of Augsburg in the first round at 170lbs. Alara Boyd who is a sophomore at McKendree University took 1st place at the Southwest Regional to qualify for the tournament. In high school Boyd wrestled for Yorktown where she was a 2-time cadet world medalist earning bronze in 2016 and silver in 2017. She was also a 2019 junior world team member as well as a 2-time Girls State champion. This is Boyd’s second National tournament appearance as she places 2nd at last year’s event. She will be in the 155-pound bracket where she will have a bye first round. Indiana currently has two colleges that offer women’s wrestling and are both in their first season’s this year, Indiana Tech who will compete at the NAIA women’s national tournament and Trine University who will have one participant, Riley Morrison, competing at this tournament at 109-pounds. Morrison is a Texas native and is coached by Indiana native Amy Hildebrandt who helped start the program just over a year ago. The brackets will be on TrackWrestling where you can follow along or watch live for a fee. https://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/predefinedtournaments/VerifyPassword.jsp?tournamentId=602244132

  32. Here are some examples that show the significant difference in the make up of some of our sectionals. There are many more examples. Just picked a few that were handy. I gave each of these a "class rank". The concept of Class Rank is to rate the difficulty level of each sectional based on school size. 4 points for a 4A school, 3 points for a 3A school, 2 points for a 2A school, 1 point for a 1A school. Some sectionals have Double the class rank of others. Sectionals in Indiana with significant 4A/3A presence: 25. Avon (11) | class rank 28 Avon, 4A Ben Davis, 4A Brownsburg, 4A Pike, 4A Plainfield, 3A Speedway, 2A Danville Community, 2A Greencastle, 2A North Putnam, 1A South Putnam, 1A Tri-West Hendricks, 1A 22. Warren (10) |class rank 23 Warren Central, 4A Franklin Central, 4A Greenfield-Central, 3A New Palestine, 3A Shelbyville, 3A Indianapolis Howe Academy, 2A Indianapolis Lutheran, 1A Scecina Memorial, 1A Triton Central, 1A Eastern Hancock, 1A 26. Mooresville (10) | class rank 26 Center Grove, 4A Decatur Central, 3A Franklin Community, 3A Greenwood Community, 3A Martinsville, 3A Mooresville, 3A Whiteland Community, 3A Monrovia, 2A Cascade, 1A Cloverdale, 1A Sectionals in Indiana with significant 1A/2A presence: 13. Peru (10) | class rank 12 Maconaquah, 2A Peru, 2A Cass, 1A Caston, 1A? Manchester, 1A. Team State North Miami, 1A Northfield, 1A? Rochester Community, 1A Southwood, 1A Wabash, 1A. Team State Not a perfect system as school size is only one factor. Culture, coaching, school commitment to the sport are all significant factors as well. But school size is a controllable factory when trying to establish balanced sectionals. 23. Tri (10) | class rank 13 Richmond, 3A New Castle, 2A. Team State Blue River Valley, 1A Cambridge City Lincoln, 1A Centerville, 1A. Team State Hagerstown, 1A Knightstown, 1A Northeastern, 1A Shenandoah, 1A Tri, 1A 15. Jay County (9) | class rank 12 Bellmont, 2A. Team State Jay County, 2A Norwell, 2A. Team State Adams Central, 1A. Team State Blackford, 1A Bluffton, 1A. Team State South Adams, 1A, Team State Southern Wells, 1A Union City 1A

  33. Bradbury vs Ramos happened 13 times in a two year period with the last one being in the state finals. Bradbury was 0-13 vs Ramos....and we thought we were going to beat him every time. I think Bradbury was winning in the third period 5 or 6 times in their 13 match rivalry.

  35. Coach Kohana Wilks of North Harrison Wrestling here. We are a very young program, and this will be our first year with an actual off-season. I was wondering who plans on hosting off-season/freestyle/Greco tournaments in the southern Indiana area this year. I’m definitely taking my wrestlers to freestyle state and central regionals, but I’m wanting to get as many local tournaments in as possible to help them transition from folk style to freestyle. Thank you!

  40. I got some more time to work on it tonight. Okay i fixed the bug where it was really only configured to sort for 3 rounds in the summary sheet, now it will sort dynamically for as many rounds as you want. fixed some other things after testing some more. Added a control worksheet, and relocated the run simulation button there as well as the "how many rounds" cell you input for how many rounds of simulation we want to do (remember to turn macros on, or the button to simulate won't work). Added an inventory worksheet, and that's where the sample inventory of wrestlers are in our hypothetical season with their scores and rating deviation now. I added a "tier" parameter, in which each wrestler gets placed in a tier by their "score". Then, i added intelligence to the matching maker in which it first should sort you by tier then by a random number to pair you up within your tier or the next tier above/below you. I configured the tiers' bands using a target distribution I set up, I think I/we need to play around with this now and run a bunch of different tournament simulations to get the right setting for the rating deviation so the amount you appreciate/depreciate in "score" isn't too fast or too small over time. I'm thinking right now probably need to set it so that a target distribution still gets met within some kind of tolerance after you run like 30 rounds, because that's about how many matches i think people have normally in a season. Might be a while before i post again. SCOTT_KELLYS_IHSAA_PROPOSED_STATE_WRESTLING_TOURNAMENT_V3.xlsm

Leroy Vega vs Greg Schaefer met 3 years in a row on Saturday. 1995 freshman Schaefer wins in semis, 1996 Vega hip toss in final seconds to win in the quarters. 1997 Vega wins in title match. Schaefer wins as freshman and again as a senior. Vega wins his final 2 years. They would go on to wrestle each other in college and sit in opposite corners as coaches. Two of Indiana's best!
