  6. I know about weight changes, growth spurts blah … blah … blah who cares, I’m lost also trying to predict these wrestlers in a weight class . 113-144 113- #1 2x Runner Up Rioux … maybe he goes up 120 idk . Lock in my eyes at 113 . 120- #1 2x Champ Dickman … looks like a lock whoever he faces . 126- #1 Scheafer vs. #2 Jendreas . Rank them how you like Idk ? Looks like a MAIN EVENT at Indiana Preseason Who’s #1 . Jendreas wins 8-2 132- #1 State Champ Thrine vs. #2 Goss Do they go up to face Challenge? Prolly not ! Thrine wins on credentials 6-3, possible nail biter if Goss gets funky with him . 138- #1 3x Hockaday vs. #2 Shephard If Shephard stays 138, I doubt it . I Still got Hockaday as a lock . 12-2 major , I’m biased though . Give me Hockaday vs. the field and one hand tied behind his back . He’s pretty good . 144- will be the first MAIN EVENT wrestle off ! If Doster stays at 144 and the rest stays with Shepherd coming in give me 4 way wrestle off . (If) they stay the same weight this is how I’ll seed it ? #1 Doster vs. #4 Shepherd #2 P. Reynolds vs. #3 Huyvaert . Don’t know where to begin in the 144 Main Event . Who to Pick … idk . Who your #1 in this hypothetical Who’s #1 ?

  7. Back for some pre-season appetizers until the IndianaMat Magazine comes out. First up is the Jeffersonville Regional. Team Race: The Olympians of Columbus East look to be the regional favorite as well as the 3A Team State team to beat. 8. This is always a salty subject and brings out many opinions and anecdotal experiences that can lead someone to believing one way is better. After a little experience coaching and with my own baseball loving son, the best thing I can say is every kid is different. As a parent or coach you need to be able to have a feel for if you kid needs pushed harder or if you need to lay off. Some kids can train one sport year round without a need for a break and others need to have breaks with other activities including other sports or competitions. Mason Parris was a three sport athlete until college and then improved by leaps and bounds while in college and represented the USA in Paris. Jesse Mendez was a one sport athlete most of his life and has had NCAA and international success with much more to come. Both took different paths and have a high level of accomplishments. Neither path to their success is wrong and both of their paths have worked for THEM. I am definitely for multiple sports for as long as possible with the general idea to narrow down your specialties when you become a freshman. There are many benefits to participating in other sports while growing up. There are also benefits to specialization earlier too. As stated, it really is dependent upon the kid and what they can handle. Unfortunately we will never know if our decisions on things like this will work until the kid is done competing in their respective sports and if the experience and goals were what we envisioned.

  12. Brownsburg has probably been the most consistent team since 2016. From 2016-19 they won IHSWCA 3A Team State, were IHSAA champions in 2017, and IHSAA runners-up in 2016 and 2018; in 2020 they finished third at IHSWCA Team State, 4th in 2021, and runners-up in 2022 and 2023, and they were IHSAA runners-up once more in 2022, third in 2023, and champions this past season ending in 2024. In that time since Brownsburg has emerged, Warren Central has won an IHSAA championship, Cathedral has won three since 2016 but four overall, Mater Dei won in 2021, and Crown Point went back to back in 2022 and 2023. Center Grove has found some success under Coach Swain having been two-time IHSAA runners-up in 2023 and 2024 and back-to-back third place finishers at 4A Team State. Also, Warren Central has been pretty consistent as well having been IHSWCA runners-up in 2016, 2019, and 2021 and IHSAA fourth place finishers this past season ending in 2024. All of this makes me wonder about another team we’ve yet to mention: Mishawaka. Dynasty in the 2000s?

    Wrestling Dynasties

Very Early Days Hammond had a 3-Peat in the early days. Bloomington/Bloomington South had several decades early on 50s-60s Southport had several runs 70s Bloomington/Bloomington South at it again 80s Delta was a juggernaut Then EMD begins to rise. 90s The age of Mater Dei 00s Mater Dei continues but has some challengers 10s Perry Medidian establishes themselves But Cathedral closes out the decade 20s Crown Points looking for their own legacy currently. Other Notable Schools South Bend Central runner-up force for awhile in the early years before finally getting a title. Belmont, one of the Muncie School or the other, and Warren Central make a presence felt over multiple decades. Lawrence North had a few years but EMD was there to hold them in check a few others. Then Griffith couldn’t quite break through EMD strangle hold in the late 90s-00s. Can’t help but point out New Castle in the early 90s too. Brownsburg had kept their dogs in the fight recently. And Center Grove isn’t backing down anytime soon.

  15. Right now, the blockbuster would be Hockaday vs. Shepherd; 3-time state champion vs. state runner-up and Fargo champion. Since Red vs. Lee, the only real match that had blockbuster potential in terms of drawing money and selling tickets to that degree they did was MAYBE Mendez vs. Boarman, but it happened in the semis and Jesse was expected to dominate, plus COVID-19 restrictions were in place. The following year, though, Mendez had a surprise match with Seltzer at Team State that ended up being great, but we all knew that was a one-off. A match that could’ve been an absolute blockbuster that a full arena didn’t get to see due to COVID-19 restrictions was Brody Baumann vs. Robert Major; they were #1 and #2 that season on a collision course and they met in the finals and had a banger of a match.

  22. Indiana guys that had great performances that weren't mentioned already Carter Fielden getting to the finals in a tough weight Case Bell, Dominic Brown, and Gavin Lewis at 123 that weight was LOADED! Gunner Henry teching Caesar Salas was impressive along with a good win in the finals Roudebush looked good, he must have had somewhere to go Nathan Reyes was the only Indiana wrestler in the top 6 at 116. Jacob Weaver had a good tournament making a run to 3rd Some of these weights were insane and you'll see guys at state that went 2-2 or 1-2.

  24. Darrick has been consistent since his first coaching appearance when he cornered Alex Dolly. The list goes on, Hinton, Harper, Beck, Lentz, Sanderfur, Macri, Thomas, Morin, Schultz, Forte, Binion, Logan, Wiesjahn, etc..... And the list goes on, BROWNSBURG. Darrick would probably disagree but his only down years were the first years it took for Mishawaka and Brownsburg teams to buy into what he was selling. 24 years of collecting titles!

  26. Can't argue too much with any of your predictions....you've proven to have a knack for this sort of stuff. Would love to see Jendreas get his state title. Would love to see Hockaday vs Shephard - more than anything to see two elite wrestlers go at it. Hockaday has proven to show up every time, even more so when it counts. Who knows what weight Shepherd will go. Wrestled 138 last year. Wrestled 132 this summer. Would still be dominant at 144. The CP team may have a couple state qualifiers wrestling jv this year - they are stacked with overlapping studs in 113 - 144 weights. Already can't wait for the Carnahan this year. Hypothetically, if Shepherd goes 132, who do you have as your #1?

  27. Team Race Floyd Central – The returning Regional and 3A Team State Champs look like they will be in the hunt again with a solid group back. Returning: 6 Semi State Qualifiers and 9 Sectional Place Winners. Terre Haute South – Last year’s Regional and Team State Runners Up bring back 7 wrestlers who wrestled for a Sectional Championship. Returning: 6 Semi State Qualifiers and 7 Sectional Place Winners. Bloomington South – The Panthers are in the championship hunt after finishing a distant 4th place in last years regional. The middle of their lineup should score big points but the youth movement makes them a solid tournament team. I always look forward to it. However I believe it’s still early yet. If I’m not mistaken it usually comes out early November (maybe last week of October if we are lucky). I’m sure they are cooking up another fine edition but it’s only September.

  29. Problem with that is you don't have coaches well versed enough in all three (especially greco) for this to be effective.

  32. Below is a slide by @wod_science on Instagram summarizing a Danish study of 250 elite and "near-elite" athletes (average age 24.5) from six sports: weightlifting, cycling, swimming, track & field, rowing, skiing. For the elite athletes, they didn't start specializing until average age 15--but the near-elite group started at an average age of 11.5. You can see the amount of time invested by the elite group rapidly catches up with the near-elite group by age 19--and far exceeds the near-elite group after age 19. Burnout is real and the right timing for when to specialize is a very real question. (Counter-point to this article is of course that none of these sports is highly technical like baseball, basketball, or, to a certain degree, wrestling. Very enlightening, though, in terms of how it illuminates the motivation level of the later specialization group.)

  33. A few thoughts on this: 1. I agree that wrestling involves a wider variety of situational skills development than these sports that were studied. 2. I agree with you that if the motivation is there, the best chance for success is certainly there. 3. This paper, however, doesn't argue against specialization or the need for max hours to be elite. Notice that the elite athletes DID specialize starting at Age 15 (freshman year of high school). And notice that they had spent considerable time on their sport by that time (5.5 hours per week from Age 9 to 15, compared to 8 hours per week in the same period for the start-early, near-elites). Notice then that elites' lifetime hours were virtually identical to the near-elites by the age we finish high school because they averaged 14.5 hours per week, year-round, all during the high school years. That's a good high school team's training and competition volume--every week, all year. 4. I really respect what your family has accomplished, but I read that the athletes in the "elite" group here are Olympic level in their sport. If your kids are placing high in the state and going to good schools, but not quite Olympic level, they're "near-elite" for this study's purposes. Could it be that there's an implied conclusion here that a little more time can be spent on other sports, general physical development, and general enjoyment of competition in addition to your preferred sport UNTIL ABOUT AGE 14 OR 15? Then go all in on one sport if the passion is there because it's not too late to become high-level and the passion for training volume has potential to be permanently unquenchable?

  36. Lucas Day at Tri-West. Along with Eli Ogle, they will have a couple dudes. Lucas got 2nd place at Frosh/Soph state last year, and Pinned Jayden Owlsey (ranked in Evansville SS #6 last year) the first round at IHPO for before having some medical issues and having to MFF before the Levi Johns match. Eli and Lucas will make some noise for Tri-West this year. Mark it down.

  46. Culver Community is hoping to pool some boys teams filling fewer than ten weight classes. If you fit this description and you (like us) have a hard time filing your schedule due to other teams (understandably) being leery about having you, then this post is for you. We are hoping to compile some of these smaller teams into some weeknight quads or Saturday morning events. That way we can maximize the chances of getting some quality mat time. We are a team in Northern Indiana and are willing to drive up to an hour on a weeknight, longer on a Saturday. If you have any interest in being added to a list of schools designed to help each other to get our wrestlers more matches this season, please email me: mbuschman@culver.k12.in.us
