Thank you to everyone who has reached out regarding Preston. Results of a CT scan and other tests have come back. Nothing is broken and he will make a full recovery. As far as what happened, the Mater Dei wrestler had been winning the entire match. An illegal slam was called. It was not intentional. Whether it was an illegal slam or not, I don’t really care. We were never taking a dive. Brownsburg doesn’t roll like that. It goes against everything we believe in. If I thought it was intentional, It would be a different story. There is no doubt in our mind that it was just a result of two dudes trying to punch their ticket to state. It was pretty chaotic as all of this was happening as I’m sure you can all imagine. Given that it was a neck/head injury, I wanted to give medical people access to Preston. Once they had time to check Preston out, I took that opportunity to talk to Preston. There was never any talk or consideration of taking a dive. Preston would never do that. He was in a lot of pain and upset. He has had a lot of adversity this season. He tore his ACL at IHPO and has been working through that pain and frustration all season. I just explained to Preston what had happened and that I was going to forfeit the match. I told him we were losing…and it would not be fair to take the trip to state away from the Mater Dei kid. Preston agreed and said he would never do that. There was no reversal of the call or anything. I just went up to officials and said we are forfeiting the match. Whoever said Preston was walking around saw someone else. He was taken out on a stretcher and to the emergency room. Snyder

  5. Around 10 years ago, the NFHS changed/clarified the rule that allows coaches to default their wrestler at any time - even during recovery time. Before that change, the only way to "do the right thing" would be to have the injured wrestler line up for the ref to blow the whistle then stop the match to default - which is even more dangerous for the injured wrestler. It was a good rule change designed for rare situations exactly like this one.

Not a lot of people thought my son could beat Stits either, but he did. I think 157 is the most wide open weight. If you look at the results between the top 12 ranked wrestlers, most have beat each other and wins are around 1-3 point differential. On any given day anybody beats anybody. I think Mason will handle himself fine. We’ll see what happens, but no matter the result, I’m proud of my son.

  7. After having wrestled both Kincaide and Foster earlier in the season, I was firmly under the impression that Foster would not have trouble with him. Foster in the postseason pinned me in the first period and teched me in the second at sectional and regionals respectively. Meanwhile Kincaide only beat me by major early in the season, and I did not expect too much improvement from him being in the Noblesville room. I made it into the ticket round against Kincaide, and I was expecting to wrestle him to the final whistle again, hoping to just give a regular decision or maybe even pull off the upset. Instead, he pinned me in 30 seconds this time. Then he pinned Foster in the 2nd period. Then he took Cashman to overtime. Honestly I thought he was going to win it by the end. Point is, that kid is going to be a multi-time state placer and maybe champion if he keeps going like this.

  14. Honestly, I think kids can go where they and their parents think will suit them best. If they want to uproot their family and move into a district, then more power to them. Also, I think it's bullshit that kids can't transfer freely. They wouldn't want to transfer if they felt that their best interests lie with staying with the same program. I get it, if these were the rules, the top schools in the state would have to work double to get kids, but..... like I've said, I truly believe people should be able to make what choice they feel will provide the best future for themselves. There's a reason my family chose Munster and we moved CJ and his ketchup on hotdog loving mother into the district, and, believe it or not, it wasn't because they are a wrestling powerhouse.

    New Weights Debacle

I can’t speak to changing of outcomes (hypothetical), but for my kid it definitely changed plans. Our football coaches support wrestling but for my son the message was clear, he can’t afford to lose any weight. Weighed 195 - 200 during football and was getting close to regularly weighing 200+. Problem is we all know you aren’t putting on weight during the rigors of wrestling season and once practices started he was closer to 195. Despite said football coaches support, 190 for a whole season was going to be a bridge too far. 182, 195, 220 was perfect. Sad it changed. So he went 215 and rarely weighed 200 despite his best efforts at eating. Rules are rules and we all know wrestlers don’t make excuses. But even though he was an SSQ he did not advance yesterday and we watched some athletes he has beaten recently get through at 190. Oh well. Definitely falls in to the “is what it is” category and my son made his choice and will live with it. Not sure about next year. Anyone have any good bulking tips (ha)? PS - some will question why he lets the football coaches know about his off season plans but tough to tell a kid that at a 6A school with 150 kids trying to make the Varsity roster.

  25. Thank you, I’ve been so confused at this part ever since they made the switch over. It’s so inconsistent for the college weight classes. They added an extra middle-weight to represent the college 149, 157, and 165, but also combined 182 and 195 into 190 when there is a 184 and 197 in college. I don’t really understand that last part.

Sometimes the letter of the rule doesn't completely cover the intent. The intent of that rule is to award a competitor the win if injured as the result of an illegal move. But officials are human and sometimes an illegal move is called when it should not have been. The intent of the rule is not to disqualify a competitor when a mistake was made. I'm guessing the official probably regretted the call & was happy that the coach stepped up & did the right thing. In the end, they got it right. What is wrong with that?

    New Weights Debacle

We talk about this all the time at my house. My son was 182 here in Indiana last year but with our national schedule had to cut to 175 to wrestle in Ohio (which was very tough). With that said, I told him that after Brecksville last year, that he would never see 175 again. Henry is our 190 and my son is taller. So we knew a bulk job had to be done. It’s been rough packing on the pounds and muscle to go from 175 to 215 in one year. I think just recently he’s hitting his stride as a 215 pounder. With that said, it’s been tough. Your suggestion would make much more sense. Kinda cool to see someone acknowledging this. Thanks.

Well said. I was confident you would share the details and in a way to not throw the referee under the bus (not saying I think you believed anything different than what you said). I knew you'd handle it with class, yet be straight. I agree the match ended with the proper result, and appreciate how it was handled. Happy to hear Preston is on the road to recovery. I will say I think the comment about him walking around was initially misconstrued. I believe he said he was standing and talking. On camera it did appear as he was standing, but couldn't tell if it was on his own or with help. And not serious could simply mean something dire such as paralysis seemed to be avoided at that point. I don't think there was any negative intent with the comment. The bottom line is kudos to how it was handled and hopefully there is a quick recovery. Good luck at State.

I've said this before and will echo it once again. Maybe I'm on a limb on my own, but.... In a tournament with no wrestlebacks, and results determining bracket placement for the next weekend, chopping off a minute in the 3rd/4th Place matches may be the dumbest thing ever! These matches could ultimately determine who the state champ is next weekend, yet they are treated the same as a 2nd round consi match in a 64 man bracket.

I'm not sure there was much happy for anyone with that match. Relief on MD's part for Henderson, stress for Coach Schaefer not knowing whether his wrestler would be DQ'd on a questionable call, seeing a wrestler hurt on the mat and his son wrestling at the same time on a different mat. And Coach Snyder disappointment and a heavy level of concern. I do believe the result was the correct one based on the match itself. But no one can be happy seeing Haines needing to be carted off. Just a tough situation all the way around.

    Best Matches to Rewatch?

These student athletes have to be set to a standard, we have kids in the stands emulating and looking up to these guys! How in the world does this warrant just an unsportsmanlike no diff than a ref getting upset for a coach yelling stalling. These two actions are not the same and require different outcomes. We condone this behavior and the sport goes backwards and no kids worry about consequences. Honestly a shame if nothing gets done! Ihsaa or the school should take action! Ihsaa always post be the face of sportsmanship so here is the chance to show repercussions for actions when certain gestures are made. Dissapointing! Kudos to gavyn for showing composure considering all that happened

  35. Concerning the three coaches arguing a call at team state, I believe it was two of them, but I could be wrong. The coaches were correct and the call on the mat was incorrect. However, I agree with you, the throwing of the rule book was not a good look and probably warranted a team point deduction. The rest of your rant is laughable. Good luck to you and your team at state this weekend!

  36. I would like to ask for your support. In my opinion most can live with and understand several challenges with ticketing; fees, assigned seating, etc. What is not acceptable is the chance that any wrestler making a state finals appearance may not have a ticket for someone special. 448 (2 per kid) tickets is not enough. The IHSAA is standing firm that everyone has the same chance to get a ticket, that sounds fair but we all know there will be someone special or supportive of a wrestler that will not be able to purchase before selling out. If ten tickets were given per kid that is 2240 tickets. There may be a kid needing 12, 15, or even 20+ but I am sure we can agree that two is not enough. The IHSAA has told me that there are about 4000 tickets needed for this event for all the folks involved. This number includes the 448 participant "family" tickets as well as 196 tickets for the 98 (2 per) participating schools. If the venue has a capacity of roughly 9600, that would leave 4600 tickets for general public to fight over. As the wrestling community would be very disappointed if the number of general tickets was 4000, it would not be half as disappointing than if a wrestler who has trained and dreamed for years of his or her participation and to find out their special person may not be able to attend. Think of all the examples: A few come to mind, grandparents, we all know a kid that has multiple parents, step parents, maybe an important aunt uncle sibling training partner club coach etc. At two the kid has to choose at 6,8 or 10 the kid's support group will not be left to chance. I was told tonight that the IHSAA has a 19 member board and that the IHSAA oranization would change this rule if this group agreed. My suggestion: We need support from 98 schools or more. Possible Indiana Mat could help with the administration of a polite list of supporters. Please do not add other arguments, this is only about allowing a family (whomever that might mean to a kid) to have the ability to support their wrestler. Remember waiting in a cue to select tickets last year and being at 350 on the list. Not fair to that special person. These special people do not need the stress and anxiety. I dont think this would crush overall attendance. How would it hurt. Please understand the IHSAA has a tall task on this and all events. In my opinion they are missing a priority with this decision. Currently, they do not agree. This argument should be shared now by the mass not after the weekend by a few folks that were unable to attend. They will just be told that it will not be a problem next year back at gainsbridge. Thanks for your time in reading this lengthy post.

  38. I agree with just about everything you said. How about that, a Merrillville guy and CP guy agreeing on something. I agree 100% with any parent that makes the choice to move in order to give their son or daughter the best opportunity at success in life. Just because a parent chooses to move doesn't mean a coach came and sat in their living room and convinced them to move to a different community and join their wrestling team. My point is that there are a lot of people making accusations of recruiting without any proof. Without proof, it's just an opinion. And typically, those opinions stem from jealousy. They appear to be so appalled at the notion of recruiting and even say they have proof. Well, end the conversation and show the proof, if you have it. If you don't, keep your mouth shut.

    New Weights Debacle

How much did the new NFHS weight classes affect and/or change plans, outcomes, and/or possibilities for both wrestlers and teams? I can’t speak for any team specifically, but I feel like eliminating the 182 pound weight class left a lot of upper weight wrestlers lost in the shuffle where they were either too big for 175 or too small for 190. You could argue the over-abundance of middle weights in 150, 157, and 165 seem pointless, but at the collegiate level, the weights are almost exactly the same (149 instead of 150). However, in contrast, there is a proper weight for wrestlers in the 180-pound range in 184.

  42. The issue at hand was the blatant disrespect for the sport and the opponent, plus calling the NC athlete racial names is over the top. Then making gestures with his hands to the crowd(unsure of what they actually were) and don’t want to speculate. It’s bad for our sport and shouldn’t be tolerated at all, from spectators, his coaches and the IHSAA. In my opinion It was beyond unsportsmanlike and could have easily escalated in to a very ugly scene by spectators, teams and coaches. This conduct must not be tolerated and stopped, immediately!

I agree. There could have been more swipes but wrestling moves quick and the Ref was just out of position to start any count and by the time he gets around and starts the count seems like an eternity. Having the camera to watch gave the 2 for the reversal and then counted 2 swipes at least I saw him swipe twice. But held 2 on the ground came up gave the 2 again as a reversal? So confirming his earlier call to the table? Man and then OT was another story all together.
