  2. Lost many women with my “obsession” for the sport. They never understood trying to keep my grandfather’s legacy alive. I always told them this is what we do. They never understood why I’d pay entry fees for kid, or drive them to Iowa. Stay up late designing singlets. Watch film or cut weight with my son’s so they don’t feel like they’re alone. I got married last summer and my wife never saw a wrestling match before me. Took her to the Mike Ester and The Al Smith; she’s a fan now. She couldn’t believe how knowledgeable the fans in the stands can be. I love this sport.

  3. Lol I came to this thread to say “the entire NE8 conference,” and I see it’s already been covered a bit. At 120 from there as well, Sean Harris (Leo) over Henry Faurote (Bellmont) fall 5:35 - Harris was down 2-3 with about a minute left before getting a takedown and subsequent pin. Timmy Rocha (New Haven) over Hunter Douglas (Norwell) 5-4 Rocha over Harris 12-7 Faurote over Douglas 7-3 Looks like it was a fun day for attendees. A bunch of wrestlers showed out and busted tough brackets and the rankings. Lot of added excitement heading into next week.

  4. Are you implying the thing the stand up for is the wearing of hats with glitter as the hill you die on?

  5. How about Leo’s 126, freshman, Nolan Butcher. Pinned Bellmont’s Will Franze, beat ranked Dekalb’s Drew Waldron 2-1 in the semis then turns around and beats ranked Jason Prough 8-7 in the finals to be NE8 conference champ as a freshman at 126. Have yourself a day kid!

  7. IHSGW Report on January 12th incident at Kokomo Memorial Coliseum.docx IHSGW Report on January 12th incident at Kokomo Memorial Coliseum First, I want to put in writing how the info was put out to the coaches and athletic directors across the state concerning the hats with glitter and feathers attached to them. I obtained a copy of all the coaches and athletic directors emails from the IHSAA. I sent out an official email to all stating that the hats presented a problem to the mats. I had asked permission to borrow the IHSAA mats and they would truck them in and let us borrow them for the event which we were very excited about. The problem lies in the fact that the boys would be using these mats the next month, and I was told to return them undamaged. I made a decision to keep the hats with glitter and feathers attached to them out of the arena. The week before, the hats presented a problem because the glitter was getting ground into the mats through the course of the day. I heard a few complaints about the glitter getting in the eyes of the competitors. Now in my email, I state I just didn’t want the glitter damaging the mats and thought well that should be enough. I should have also included the safety risk but just saying please don’t bring them should have been enough. When I obtained the list and went through it after the tournament it still had New Palestine’s athletic director’s email on it but from his last job. The head coach is new so his wasn’t on there either. With that being said, Mr. Andrew Frey listed as the boys/girls coach was told personally by Randall Hayes, our head official, not to bring the hats and why. This information was given to him the Monday before the state at a boy’s seeding meeting they were both at. The coach told this to Jason Delois during the week. No email would have reached Mr. Delois because he is a volunteer coach but he was told not to bring those hats according to the head coach, Mr. Frey. The reasons Mr. Delois received 2 unsportsman-like calls are as follows: (The whole incident was filed by the referees witnessing the violations as they occurred.) 1. Mr. Delois was told when entering the event that the hats could not be worn into the arena because of the mandate put out by me, Gary Myers. Mr. Delois disregarded that instruction and kept walking with the team. He then gets to the main gym with the hats still on and was told a second time by the host school that the hats could not be worn into the gym and why. Each time he was asked he disregarded the host schools directive. Randal Hayes, head official, Curt Crouch official, Pat Culp Tournament Director and IHSAA Official, Robert Faulkens all told him to get the hats out of the event. They all were disregarded and Mr. Delois said to them this is ridiculous and he continued to defy all directives. 2. At no time after these violations were written up did it say Mr. Delois was banned from the IHSAA. The unsportsmanlike calls are for Mr. Delois’ behavior once he arrived at the event. If you are a coach that reads the rules you know that once these are written up you have to sit the next dual meet or tourney. Now, the girl’s season has concluded so this doesn’t really affect girl’s future duals or tournaments for this season. 3. Debris on the mat is not allowed under any circumstance for the athlete’s safety. Glitter can get into a wrestler’s eyes and cause damage. It is as simple as that. During my conversation with Mr. Delois, I looked at him and said “Do you realize that you have glitter under your eye?” Hence proving my point. 4. Mr. Delois should have apologized and took the hats to his bus and that would have been the end of it. Sadly, that was not the path he chose. Mr. Delois had the option, over the next 30 minutes, to choose his course of action. He did not choose the likely path of sportsmanship and leadership. Mr. Delois chose defiance, disrespect, and the blatant disregard for the rules. This is why actions were taken against his behavior. 5. One other coach was written up the same way Mr. Delois was and they left the floor and building immediately. I just want to personally say that this is unfortunate as we are trying to build women’s wrestling and nobody wants anyone to leave a sporting event. However, when one person decides to disregard the rules there has to be a consequence especially when it affects the safety of others. Gary Myers President IHSGW

  13. Do you ever get the question when wrestling is over ? Did your significant utter understand the dedication it takes to be a coach ? Well I have been married 46 years to my little princes. We meet when I was 19 - she was kinda close in age - at least that what she told me at da time. I was still pusueing the the fine sport at da time. She has spent many hours and days in venues supporting me and my trainies. Between working countless doubles at da mill and spending time watching , coaching and training wrestling it can be rough on da home life. So told her dis weekend dare were no meets for me to watch. Well I forgot about da big ten network. Well 3 dual meets on a cold region winter evening on da tube. Da ole rat has been fighting a cold and did not want to go out for liberations. So Told my princess that I was not up to going out but Had a idea. My little lady likes the Blue Clip and da hard rock. So I told that I would pay for a uber and give he some gambling $ for her and her buddy. Well those matches cost me $500. Of course I got the story I was up 300 hundo but pay it back in da machine. Well you young coaches make sure you train them right. Wrestling season is never over. I really hope with the advent and growth of women wrestling some of young guys can meet the women wrestler of your dream. As we all know we are all kinda crazy to do this sport. It would better if you had a partner who loves it like you.

  16. Told my then girlfriend I would be attending State Finals on the date of her 21st birthday. We had a wrestler from my school in it, but I was still in college so just attending as a fan at that point. I remind my now wife all the time that she knew what she was getting into after she decided to stick with me following that weekend. She does appreciate that I’m just a volunteer coach these days, although I still spend a significant amount of the week at one age level of wrestling or another.

  20. Sr. Year Zak Fattores run@170 was damn impressive. Was scoring bonus points in every match up until the semifinals dominating before a defensive pin was called.. was 39-0 going to the state finals and Tech fall is first two opponents 16-0. Was handily beating Rader b4 that late def pin was called.. Robbing us of a Fattore vs warren Final.. Warren had only lost up at 182 to Nate Walton. who is also had 1 of the best campaigns without a title also. Walton gets the nod as 1 of the best to never win a state title imho...8,3,3,2 and 2x NAIA ALL AMERICAN and the mayor of chin whip City!

  21. As the postseason gets underway next week, what are some of the most memorable pinfalls you’ve seen at sectionals, regionals, semi-state or state that resulted in an upset? Brownsburg No. 1 Logan Miller getting headlocked in the SS first round last year has to rank up there as the most stunning. Close but no cigar is Mendez almost getting pinfalled and then going on to tech Koontz in the championship. Any others top of mind?

  22. 1. Did Jasper wrestle MD this year? If so, what was the score? 2. North is on the rise. Coach Hewig has installed tough wrestling for the Huskies 3. 106 final should be interesting 4. No fireworks from 113-126 5. MD's 19-10 sophomore, Grant Voelker gets top seed at 132. That MD schedule has paid dividends. Waiting in the final is Reitz's 30-3 Colton Pfettscher. Who do you like? 6. Memorial's Landon Horning is the Tigers' lone top seed. Does Cam Baumann have any tricks up the sleeves of his singlet? 7, MD's Tyler Vanover gets the top seed, North's 29-0, Cale Bonenberger is the two seed. This could be a good one! 8, 157 is wide open. Four grapplers are capable of taking home the gold. 9. 175--while not wide open--is ripe for an upset,...or two 10. Undefeated Big 'Un From Bosse (UBUFB), Mikel Green draws a top seed for the 'Dogs for the first since? Since? Bueller? Bueller? i am going to guess at least 25 years, Donald Roberts, if you follow this board, please chime in. I have no idea who/what Green has faced. Gimme some intel here. Bold prediction number one- MD takes home the team title. Who gets second? It looks like a horse race between North, Reitz and Jasper. Bold prediction number two- Castle will be an excellent host and provide baked potatoes as big as your head. Bold prediction number three- Todd Foxxx, You know who you are. *If I see UBUFB on a shirt or hat, you will hear from my attorney.

  28. little biased here, but Leighton Jones's sophomore run through sectionals, regionals, SS & state as a HWT to lose in OT to senior Reeve Muncie in the semis was pretty wild. If only two of those takedowns that ended outside of the circle had been inside & happened in regulation...

  38. A few have. But much less if you remove the highly ranked kid that SS injury defaulted to 4th from the discussion. Often one heck of a state bracket buster and a shocking surprise for a SS when those type of defaults occur.

  39. Chad Ruggeri locking up some double overs and decking Dexter Lamimore for a pin and the state title was impressive. Daniel Young and Gavin McGinley were having a pretty intense back and forth battle all the way into the 3rd of the state final. McGinley put Young on his back and was close to a pin. Then Young got out, hit a reversal straight into a cradle and got the fall. The crowd was way into that match.

  41. Chris Wildeman over Richie Diggs (sp?) for the state championship, Craig Weinzapfel had Alex Tsirtsis plastered to the mat but the ref wouldn't call it. Not a pin but when Brandon Cox had Josh Crick on his back in the 1994 Sectional Championship match the roof came off of the gym at MD. That single moment is the loudest I have ever heard that place, Cox won the match due to that move but did not get the pin. Long and interesting story on that one but maybe for another time.

    State Champ Predictions

Funny to me that no one mentions Parker Reynolds at 144.....Parker beat Courtney 11-4 last year at duals then Courtney beat Parker in SV at Regionals when Parker was already ailing. Parker lost 2 matches to Cheaney by a combined score of 6-1, Courtney lost 2 matches to him 24-2. I understand he was off the whole year but he is wrestling well and getting more and more of his mojo back every week. I think you all are sleeping on him
