Great Win for Jesse!  He has been tough getting off bottom against some good riders.  Funny Jesse got hit for stalling but did all the shooting.  He got out of that of shuck by Ragusin in the first period was impressive.

Him getting out of that was awesome! When it happened live I was like oh no! Why would I doubt Jesse? Shame on me

I was wondering the same thing about the stalling call. Jesse was definitely seemed more aggressive.

The stalling call was a poor call IMO, but definitely not an uncommon one. And yes, Jesse had definitely been the more agressive wrestler.

Folkstyle wrestling is not Freestyle. You don't get a point for pushing your opponent off the mat. It is actually supposed to be stalling on the wrestler doing the pushing if they are not actually working for a TD. Yet you see so many wrestlers who simply attempt to push their opponent off the mat while never taking any type of shot. You see this constantly from Iowa wrestlers with their coaches & fans screaming for stalling.

If officials would actually start calling stalling on wrestlers who are doing this rather than rewarding them for it, you would see a lot less of it. But more importantly, it would stop coaches from teaching it. It is not unsimilar to how you use to see wrestlers who would always want to wrestle at the edge of the mat & simply flee out of bounds when they got into trouble. The emphasis on calling stalling for fleeing the mat coupled with the new out of bounds rules in college (which aren't very new anymore) has pretty much eliminated this technique. But more importantly it got coaches to stop teaching it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread about Jesse. And it was not like this was happening in this match. Jesse was being agressive and taking territory, but he was looking & working for shot opportunities. And Ragusin was not simply backing off the mat, he was circling back in or at least attempting to. Then in an instant, the tables were turned & Jesse had his back to the edge & Ragusin pushed him out. IMO, the official should have signaled continuous action. Ragusin didn't push Jesse from the center all the way off the mat & Jesse was defintely not fleeing the mat in an attempt to avoid a TD.

Agree with every bit of this post, and Coaches teaching it are going to get their wrestlers thrown trying to cave man their way into developing a bad habits! Especially doing so on the edge of the mat.

I actually got into it w some parents at Jr High match over this. An upperweight just kept pushing our girl off the mat and making zero attempts, the other coaches were doing their best drama class act and getting the stall calls. Ridiculous.

No doubt this is Must See TV!

For Indiana wrestling fans anyway.

RBY came out on fire, Jesse was uncharacteristically Conservative and didn't get into any of his usual attacks, this was the most aggressive I've seen RBY vs a stud like Mendez in quite a long time.. Jesse will make adjustments and improvements like champions do, not excuses!

It looked like Mendez was considering pulling the trigger near the end with a throw to go for the win. You could hear his team tell him “Be smart, Jesse.”  He may have heard them and decided to keep it at a 3-point decision instead of going for a win and risking a major or a fall.

Even if RBY countered and pinned Mendez, the 6 points vs 3 points wouldn’t have made any difference in the meet, and no one was predicting Ohio State to beat Penn State or for it to even be close. The score was 29-9, and Ohio State won 2 of 10 matches with 3 take downs total.

Hopefully, the crowd noise at NCAA drowns out the bench advice and we get to see a Lance Ellis (👈 should be doing lateral clinics) move or his high school freshman one he did on a state champ at the Al Smith.

Agree. After they got the fall at 125, they were probably hoping a close dual could still be possible. In an individual tournament, it would have been interesting to see him go for the throw. He was in on it for sure.

He was doing a great job with the inside arm tie to the left side early in the match, not allowing any chances for RBY; but it might not be something he felt confident to attack from. Once he started adjusting ties for his own setups late in the first, RBY immediately capitalized for a takedown and it changed the tactics of the match.

Really glad both teams put out all their top guys. It felt like a pre-covid dual.

I feel JM might have held back just to see what RBY had and is going to work on things in the room. RBY is an awesome wrestler and it would be a major upset for JM to beat him but JM is an awesome wrestler too. B10 will be fun to watch! Hope we get to see round 2 there.

RBY is like a lion who plays with its food.  Many matches appear closer than they are.  This match wasn't close.  Like most of RBY's matches.  Mendez is having a great frosh campaign, but beating RBY at this point would be a major upset.  There's a reason RBY is a multi-time National Champ.

Ohio state vs Northwestern at 2pm central time at Northwestern. Several region wrestlers going at it. If you haven’t had enough wrestling this weekend come get your fill.  Pretty cheap entry tickets for general admission.

Mendez will have Cannon. This is rubber match from the U23 finals 2 years ago when Jesse got hurt. You will also get the Davison brothers, Bates, and Yahya. Region Wrestlings Finest.

That match reminded me of Nick Lee as a freshman taking on Stevan Micic, a 2-time defending State Champ, as a senior. Nick was already a very accomplished excellent wrestler, but he wasn't ready for someone like Micic at that moment.

The experience & maturity was too much to overcome.

I'm certain that Jesse can close the gap in the future. The question is can he close it this season? That is a big ask, but if any freshman can shock the world this year at 133 it would be Jesse.
