  1. Since this was the year of the firsts!! Rossville - Noah Weaver Garrett - Chase Leech

  2. #1 calling out individual kids is something that you need to refrain from or else there will be a forced vacation from posting. #2 ask Coach Peck said, it comes up every year. The solution is hairy as you cannot penalize a kid for being hurt with points. The way NCAA does it with choice of position for the injury time is the best way to do it in my gracious opinion. While this isn't a punishment via points it gives the other wrestler an advantage that they must make use of.

  3. Yeah, our past way of discussing "greatest ever" where we put Tsirtsis over Escobedo because Escobedo had a loss (out of state to a kid highly ranked in the nation)--has to get completely thrown out the window now. I mean Hockaday, our #1-ranked pound-for-pound kid, got a DNP at the Iron Man. If he goes on to win a 4th title, continues to improve nationally, and ends up a multiple-time college All-American--do we put him behind historical guys who had only 2 or 3 career losses but didn't compete out of state, just because of the record in the state finals program? It's definitely a new era.

  4. I assume you mean just during their high school career? Otherwise (and I know you know this), Jason Tsirtsis also was a 4 timer for CP (though with 2 losses) but also was an NCAA champion.

  5. As logical as this sounds I would hate for a referee to be on the hook to determine if the athlete is injured during action. That seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen and refs have enough to deal with.

  6. It is up to the coaches (the adults in the situation) to try to teach the proper lessons such as integrity, accountability, and character. I know many coaches will teach kids to take advantage of the way the rule is written to gain an advantage and they believe this is the right lesson to teach (use any advantage you can to gain an edge even if it goes against the integrity of the rule as long as you aren't "breaking" any rules). I disagree with this mindset, I believe you should uphold the spirit and integrity of the rule. A win is not worth sacrificing the life lessons that this great sport teaches such as perseverance, discipline, self accountability, character, and integrity. You do not take "blood" time, unless there is blood, and you don't take "injury" time unless there is an injury. If you call getting out of an unfavorable situation, or taking a breather because you're tired an injury, we have a vastly different definition of what an injury is, and we have a vastly different opinion on what we should be teaching our athletes. We are in the business of developing good humans first, and great athletes as a byproduct of teaching such lessons. If you are teaching the other way around, I believe you are doing your student-athletes a disservice. Just one coach's humble opinion.

  10. Every year for the last fifty (that is about my length of recollection) people always gripe about misuse of injury time. I think that sometimes injury time is abused, but there is nothing to be done about that except maybe scoring one point any time an injury time is taken when the Official determines a score is imminent. Other than that I fear we begin to penalize a kid who is injured and that should not happen. I thinik most coaches, if they wil admit it, have had a kid who faked it to get a rest. I remember once back in the early eighties when my guy was wretling in the Regional and in the middle of a flurry he began to scream. The Official stopped the action, and I quickly moved to him. I told him to lie still and asked him where he was injured,. He looked up and said, "I'm not injured coach I just need a break." I wanted to kill him, ir was embarassing eventhough no one knew. I told him to lay there until I helped him up. I got him up and had him walk around, and then he went back to wrestling. The "break" did not help as he got beat fairly soundly. THe next week at praxctice I made him run each day. He asked why and I told him it he needed a break during the match he must not be in shape. There may have been others, but nearly as blatant.

  11. That's why Silas is practicing today, so he can step it up and not bore you anymore. On a side note Coach Swain and Curry have never coached anyone to stall, that idea cracks me up. They demand you to score points and punch(figure of speech) your opponent in the mouth no matter how much your up or down in a match. Being soft is not tolerated by those dudes.

  12. Just my opinion but Damon Hummel is hands down the best wrestler in Rochester history. If 215 was a thing he is easily a two time champ.

Hard to say that the Angel Escobedo, Alex Tsirtsis, Matt Coughlin and Blake Maurer era wasn't the most fun time to watch for Indiana wrestling.

  22. Very interesting twists on this thread... Interesting take by some posters criticizing some wrestlers and their parents for making decisions to compete this season vs. not due to injuries... A few thoughts... these athletes only get 4 years to compete in HS for the sport they've trained in since most were 4 years old. To give up a season when a physician says it's your choice, it's not surprising most chose to continue competing... There's no medical red shirt in high school sports. Guys like Preston Haines who missed a season that he'd likely have been the state champ, know what it feels like to miss out, so no surprise he wanted to continue... Parker Reynolds defied statistics with his recovery, read Gregg Doyel's IndyStar article for info there... Guys like Reynolds, Brewer, Haines did all they could to compete to help the team win the title this year and didn't want to let their teammates and coaches down. Additionally for what it is worth, Brewer wrestled lights out at Evansville and you could tell that his lower extremity issue wasn't affecting him as much on that Saturday as it was at state... So, if a poster wants to opine about the rule, i get it. Casting shade at athletes from certain schools to further your gripe is probably not necessary at all and makes issues personal imo...

  25. Well this topic went a bit sideways. The intent of my original post and topic was that we as coaches have a responsibility to see that injury time isn't abused. There is a difference between an injury and using the injury timeout to collect your thoughts, breath, escape a situation, etc. If we as a wrestling community are ok with using injury timeout as a strategy, well then my friends, we are no better than basketball and that's a direction I would rather not take. Also, single class wrestling sucks, there, that should get this topic headed in the right direction...

Wyatt Krejsa bonus pointed everyone in the state leading into the state championship match. Hunter May had a very dominant season as well and held the match to a regular decision 13-6. I'd have to check the stats (it's been a long season) but I think Hunter May landing that headlock in the finals may have been the only offense points given up by Wyatt to an Indiana opponent this season. Wyatt had a hell of a year and put in so much work!!

  32. Question. Would you automatically crown a 4x state champion over a 3 timer?
    1 point
  33. The best way to curb that is for injury time that the coach cannot attend to the wrestler and a trainer/doctor must attend to them. Along with not allowing water or anything like that.

Nick Lee. Pretty sure he scored bonus points in every single match that he won in his 3 years in Indiana. Only two wrestlers to beat him were both ranked #1 in the nation at the time, and one is a world champ. David McCubbins - untouchable in Indiana his last two years, really untouchable nationally as well, winning double titles at Fargo and being on a couple of greco world teams. If not for injury he cruises to a second state title in '92 Matt Coughlin - fargo champ, senior nationals champ Andy Schneider was as dominant a hvy as I've seen

  38. @TeamGarcia tells the story... Contenders started in Plainfield and moved to Brownsburg a few years ago... Red Cobra came over to the west side in Avon about 9-10 years ago and they've both had staying power over the decade. On any given Tuesday night in the off season, it's a literal Who's Who in Chad and Roy's Red Cobra dojo... I imagine the southside training ops have picked up with the addition of the second location for Contenders, so the Mooresville Regional meat grinder will continue to get worse and worse and then have it capped off with the EVSS with Invicta & MCWC throwing in their best. The other interesting element in the rise of the regional academies has been the additional training opportunities in the olympic styles and the success in them by Indiana wrestlers when competing nationally. Also, mucho respect to Center Grove, Crown Point and Brownsburg for continuing to push the envelope with wrestling schedules that include the toughest tournaments like IronMan, Brecksville, The Carnahan, IHSWCA 4A Team State and maybe Cheesehead in the future - the level of competition left no one's record unscathed this season. Maybe we will have to have asterisked records for in-state vs. out-of-state W/L numbers in the future - esp for announcers on the state finals broadcasts...!

I think he is going to be an Indiana legend after his college career is completed. Always scoring. Has a great collegiate wrestler mentality with the skill to back it up. Hot take for New Prarie guys: he equals or slightly bests Christian Carroll in NCAA AA's if he wrestles in college to completion.

  40. Here is the final Team State qualification leaderboard for 2024. Teams highlighted have earned automatic bids into the event next year. That's the 3 best semi-state winners plus the next 3 best scores in 4A and all 4 semi-state winners plus the next 4 best scores in 1A, 2A, and 3A. (Note: The final 2A spot came down to the 3rd tiebreaker (most underclass ticket rounders) after points, most underclassmen, and most underclass state qualifiers were equal.) The final 2 berths in 4A and the final 4 berths in 1A, 2A, and 3A will be voted on in December. Teams with a star (*) next to their school name had injury points added in. If you are talking about a single season then I respectfully submit Wyatt Krejsa's current season. -Undefeated in IN during the regular season. 29-2 coming into sectional. - Went 3-2 at the Walsh Ironman. His only losses of the season were at this tournament. He upset the #5, 145 in the nation. -Al Smith Title - Fall, Major, Fall, TF and Fall -Mooresville Sectional - Bye, Inj Def, Fall, TF -Mooresville Regional - Fall, Fall, TF -Evansville Semi State - Fall, Major, Fall, Fall (against the #2 ranked wrestler) -State Finals - Fall, Fall, TF, Dec (13-6 against the #2 ranked wrestler) That is a pretty good bit of work.

Felt so reminiscent of Joe Lee/Tommy Cash. Stud freshman beats former 3rd and 2nd place senior in the semi-finals, then takes an early lead on former state champion senior in the finals. Starts to look like he’s going to cruise to his first state championship, and then BAM on his back a few seconds later. Was admittedly pulling for Shepherd, not because I have a problem with Kyrel, but because of the possibility of looking back on this tournament in the future and seeing four different 4x state champions competing at one state finals. But congratulations to Kyrel. He showed up all weekend, and had a career 99.99% of high school wrestlers wish they could have had
