  1. The least intrusive way to do wrestlebacks would be this. You lose in the first round, and you are done. If you lose in the quarters, then you have to hope the guy who beat you wins in the semis and then you wrestle the guy who lost in the semis. It would add 28 total matches to the day. Divide 28 by 4 mats, so 7 matches per mat. Each match takes about 10 minutes let's say, so you're adding about 60-70 minutes to the day.

  3. Now I only concentrated on the potential Ticket Round matches & only if both wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 in the State. There are plenty of other bad draws, but to me these are the ones that standout. Fort Wayne Ticket Round 113 #4(#2) Jalen Sawyer-May (Kokomo) vs. #7(#3) Levi Johns (Bluffton) East Chicago Ticket Round 132 #6(#2) Guillermo Rivera (Lake Central) vs. #8(#3) Sonny Sessa (Crown Point) 150 #9(#3) Kaptur Nowaczyk (Crown Point) vs. #7(#2) Caydn Smith (Plymouth) 215 #1(#1) Will Clark (Crown Point) vs. #7(#5) Kameron Kauffman (Warsaw) 285 #2(#2) Brady Beck (Rochester) vs. #6(#5) Collin Foy (Hanover Central) New Castle Ticket Round 138 #6(#2) Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle) vs. #7(#3) Peyton Hornsby (New Palestine) 150 #8(#3) Braden Getz (Roncalli) vs. #4(#1) Jacob Weaver (Rossville) 190 #10(#4) Clay Guenin (Greenfield-Central) vs. #3(#1) Luke Penola (Zionsville) 215 #8(#3) Jackson Weingart (Cathedral) vs. #10(#5) Shaun Glass (New Palestine) Evansville Ticket Round 106 #6(#3) Royce Malone (Monrovia) vs. #4(#2) Brady Byrd (Washington) 120 #3(#1) Ty Henderson (EV. Mater Dei) vs. #4(#2) Preston Haines (Brownsburg) 120 #9(#5) Walter Hagedorn (Tell City) vs. #7(#4) Isaac Ash (Monrovia) 126 #1(#1) Isaiah Schaefer (EV. Mater Dei) vs. #6(#4) Dominic Brown (Center Grove) 150 #2(#2) Hunter May (Floyd Central) vs. #3(#3) Tommy Gibbs (Brownsburg) 190 #8(#4) Jett Goldsberry (Heritage Hills) vs. #2(#2) Kaden McConnell (Center Grove) Given 16 wrestlers per weight get to go to the State finals, anyone ranked in the Top 10 who gets eliminated by another Top 10 wrestler in the Ticket Round at SS without the chance of wrestle-backs is a complete injustice. JMO!

  6. Imagine a world (if you dont mind) in which Kresja is still at Delta. Brabender is still at northridge. Veazy is still in state. Rochester doesn't get moved. If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle I know I know. But FW SS could've been well represented under the lights when on top of them you factor in Boyd, Tishner, Wood, Doster, Betz, Leech, Keegan Martin, Hinton.

  12. I returned to Hobart high school to enjoy some Regional #1 wrestling, and, more important, check out the hot dogs. First things first, on my first trip to Hobart, I do believe they did slip me a polish sausage, which is funny, because that's the same line my ex girlfriend gave me when I caught her cheating. Anyway, I did enjoy this hot dog better, but, there was one thing. Both dogs I got were Luke warm at best, so that did impact the score. The regional hot dogs get 5.75 slices of pizza outta 8. Now, I did have a guest reviewer, my kid Chris Jr. and this is how that interaction went. CJ "those hot dogs were good" he stares back into his phone Me " they were? Why?" Cj - annoyed sigh Me " tell me" Cj- annoyed grumble Me "how many slices of pizza?" Cj "7, I guess" back to phone. Next stop, semi state at East Chicago. It feels like I was just there. Thank you for reading.

    Semi-State Draws

Thanks @Y2CJ41 for the Double Top Secret Super Semi State Formula. I NOW HAVE THE POWER ! To give every poster on Indianamat RINGWORM with the snap of finger . Do I have fingers ? Maybe a click of feet . idk. Anyways My latest plan consists of Super Secret Formulas of next year Semi State and take over Indianamat . I WILL BEAT YOU TO IT ! Sincerely Yours Truly Plankton

  14. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember Jarred Brooks had a killer final year. State champ and Super 32 Champ beating Nathan Tomaselo. Not many of our Indiana guys have been able to pull that one off.

    Semi-State Draws

Just an observation but there always seems to be a lot of whining about “bad” draws. This system has been in place for years and years so maybe instead of whining and complaining about bad draws your kid got, you should create your “good” draw by winning the regional. Winning the regional will create a better odds of advancing, losing will put you at the mercy of the draw we all know this. This is wrestling so quit whining already and wrestle who’s on the line across from you. In a perfect world we would have wrestle backs but until then, “Just Win”!

  18. In IHSAA world, where both seeding and wrestlebacks are evil. I can understand not seeding SS as you have regional 1 vs 4 and so on, but adding wrestlebacks would make it closer to having the best wrestlers advancing, not the luckiest draws.

  34. By STEVE KRAH stvkrh905@gmail.com Drew Waldon stepped onto the mat at the 2023 IHSAA State Finals as a 113-pound sophomore. Now a 126-pound DeKalb High School junior, Waldon will be again be aiming for the state meet — this time Feb. 16-17 at the Ford Center in Evansville instead of Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis — when he represents the Barons on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Fort Wayne Semi-State at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Waldon’s first-round foe in the 16-man bracket is Norwell junior Jason Prough. It takes two victories at semi-state to place in the top four and qualify for the State Finals. “I’m just trying to stay focused and disciplined,” says Waldon of his pre-semi-state practice week. Waldon (28-4 in 2023-24 with two losses coming against Ohio foes in the Defiance Border War event on Dec. 28-29) is coming off a second straight Goshen Regional title on Feb. 3. This time around, he topped Wawasee sophomore Cameron Senter 4-2 in the finals. Up 2-1 going into the final period, Waldon allowed an escape then scored two points in the third period. Before that, Waldon reigned at the West Noble Sectional on Jan. 27, pinning Prairie Heights junior Boston Baas in 5:40 for the title. Waldon placed third in the Northeast Eight Conference meet at Huntington North on Jan. 20. He lost 2-1 to eventual NE8 champion and Leo freshman Nolan Butcher in the semifinals and later came back to best Columbia City senior Dale Cassidy for third. “That loss was a surprise, but it’s good to learn from these mistakes now,” says DeKalb head coach Justin Wight of his comments at the time. “We make adjustments and come back for (IHSAA) tourney time.” At the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team Duals, Waldon went 2-1 as DeKalb placed 12th in Class 3A. What’s the best thing Waldon does in the circle? “I’m pretty equal at everything,” says Waldon, who is heading to his third semi-state in three seasons (He placed third at 113 in 2023 and did not place at 106 in 2022.). “On my top game, I can turn almost anybody.” As a junior, Waldon embraces a leadership role at DeKalb. “I try to push my teammates,” says Waldon with a hoarse voice from cheering on his fellow Barons at regional, including sophomore James Hartleroad (who won at 285), junior Jadon Teague (who placed fourth at 144), junior Graham Blythe (who placed fourth at 175), junior Dominic Dunn (who did not place at 165) and junior Brady Long (who did not place at 190). “I want them to be better.” Hartleroad was a 16U Greco-Roman national champion and ISWA Greco-Roman and Freestyle State winner at 285 in 2023. Teague made it to semi-state as a freshman at 138 and Blythe was a regional qualifier as a sophomore at 160. Drew is the middle child of the three born to James and Heather Waldon, behind Jared and Deanna. Little sister grappled in junior high. “My dad takes me everywhere so does my mom,” says Drew. “It really gave me so many opportunities to get better and advance my skill set.” Waldon, who took up in the sport in junior high, placed sixth at Frosh-Soph State sixth at 120 in 2023, sixth at Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle State at 113 in 2022 and seventh at ISWA Freestyle State at 100 in 2021. Wight, who works in industrial refrigeration, is in his second year coaching wrestling at DeKalb after about a 10-year gap when he coached at Homestead. He took over as Barons head coach at midseason. A piece of coaching advice that resonates with Waldon: “No matter what, keep your head up and keep wrestling.” Says Wight of Waldon, “He’s one of the most disciplined and hard-working kids. You don’t have to babysit him all the time. He’s going to be doing the right things. “He wins with grace. He loses with grace. He’s just one of those rare kids. He’s very humble. He’s very polite.”

    This Years SS Terrible Draws

IHSAA is forever going to ruin potential state placers with the lack of work on their end. I understand that some kids are going to have hard ticket round match ups, thats unavoidable. But a lot of the time there are ways to relocate matches and truly have the top 16 in each weight class make it through. But, until someone at IHSAA really takes a look at things with a mindset to fix it and make it better, every year we are going to be unsatisfied with the way this state runs the state tournament series.

  40. now we all know brownsburg, mater dei and center grove will get into team state … and they should. It really has a bigger affect on the smaller schools (1A and 2A) battling those 3 plus throw in Avon, Floyd central, terre haute south for their team state bids

  49. The capacity for a hockey setup at Gainbridge is around 12,500, which is basically what we use for wrestling. It will be tighter and friendlier this year, but we aren't losing as much as you want to think we are losing. There are people that don't go for whatever reason when it's in Indy, this year will be no different.
