The stalling call was a poor call IMO, but definitely not an uncommon one. And yes, Jesse had definitely been the more agressive wrestler. Folkstyle wrestling is not Freestyle. You don't get a point for pushing your opponent off the mat. It is actually supposed to be stalling on the wrestler doing the pushing if they are not actually working for a TD. Yet you see so many wrestlers who simply attempt to push their opponent off the mat while never taking any type of shot. You see this constantly from Iowa wrestlers with their coaches & fans screaming for stalling. If officials would actually start calling stalling on wrestlers who are doing this rather than rewarding them for it, you would see a lot less of it. But more importantly, it would stop coaches from teaching it. It is not unsimilar to how you use to see wrestlers who would always want to wrestle at the edge of the mat & simply flee out of bounds when they got into trouble. The emphasis on calling stalling for fleeing the mat coupled with the new out of bounds rules in college (which aren't very new anymore) has pretty much eliminated this technique. But more importantly it got coaches to stop teaching it. Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread about Jesse. And it was not like this was happening in this match. Jesse was being agressive and taking territory, but he was looking & working for shot opportunities. And Ragusin was not simply backing off the mat, he was circling back in or at least attempting to. Then in an instant, the tables were turned & Jesse had his back to the edge & Ragusin pushed him out. IMO, the official should have signaled continuous action. Ragusin didn't push Jesse from the center all the way off the mat & Jesse was defintely not fleeing the mat in an attempt to avoid a TD.

  6. It was a complete accident. Keegan went for a mat return at the end of the second. Braylon put his knees to his chest to land on all fours and the way the two boys moved at the same time landed Braylon on his forehead. It was scary being his coach but was a COMPLETE accident and nothing intentional or dirty. Braylon was taken to the hospital and released a few hours later. Hoping if Braylon is healthy for Saturday to see the rematch that safely goes the entire 6 mins.

  13. Before the season I watched one of his matches on Flo, and as an 8th grader he wrestled a hard 6-2 loss to Mitchell Betz at Cadet 160. Having watched some of Betz's matches in the state series, I was blown away. It is hard to tell who is the best freshman at Rochester, and that is crazy. Speaking of freshman, that freshman class at North Miami is no joke. They are going to be a ranked 1A school in a couple of years, if not sooner.

Agree with every bit of this post, and Coaches teaching it are going to get their wrestlers thrown trying to cave man their way into developing a bad habits! Especially doing so on the edge of the mat.

South has shone some moxie this year. I’m not sure Washington has a chance to AA, as I thought this year. He has a problem of getting off bottom , and if he doesn’t attack all the time, he gives up too much. We’ll see. Great team effort again. Needed every one.

  49. I will stand up for Ethan here. Ethan's 145 is very solid and has proven himself by winning the SAC. The sectional seeds did not play out in his favor because of a loss he had against us early in the season but we then lost to Snider. He has passion for his wrestler which is what a coach should have. So much so he gave me and my coach the what for at the seeding meeting and I totally understood. I will say this. In the offseason Ethan has constantly contacted me and recommend his wrestlers to go do offseason training. His youth club has about 40 in it this year and last year I believe around the same. He had a little beginner tournament last year for all FWCS schools and local clubs and it went well. Coaching at North Side, Wayne, and Northrop are very tough to get the numbers and keep them and it will need to be from the ground up. We came close to getting middle school wrestling going this year but logistically it just doesn't seem to work. I don't think we have a wrestler shortage all the time we have a huge coaching shortage. Not just at the high school level but also in at the youth and middle school level. Look at what Blackhawk middle school ran into this year. Snider has an established culture that is back on the rise with a very good full coaching staff and support from the top down. I think a possible answer can be recruiting local college grads from Manchester, Indiana Tech, Wabash, and Trine to come back and be willing to sacrifice their time to invest in the youth and middle school. A single High School coach can't do it by themselves. I personally have 2 coaches on my staff that are young and graduated from Indiana Tech. Lost a great one last year to a job change. It's awesome to see them out on the mat wrestling the kids and doing what they love. Let's bring those graduated college wrestlers into our rooms and mentor them for a year or 2 and get them involved in the youth and middle school side of things. I know I am not saying anything you don't know General. Just wanted to give a shout out to Ethan because coaching can be a thankless job especially in some of the schools that just aren't quite there yet. Ethan is passionate about his wrestler and that I totally understand. I am pretty upset at my 138 pounders seed but we lost a close match at the end that cost us. Tis wrestling.
