  1. When someone wins a sprinting event, we don’t look to see how many people ran the 100 meter dash in high school because we know the Olympic sprinter would smoke every single person in the world. Hildabrandt and Miracle would smoke almost every single woman in the world on the mat, and it’s a big pretty big world.

  2. The IHSAA has modified the travel restrictions! Per https://www.ihsaa.org/Portals/0/ihsaa/documents/news media/2021-22/062322.BasketballFormat.pdf The Committee approved modified restrictions on Indiana schools competing against schools from beyond the 300-mile travel limit. IHSAA schools will now be able to participate against out-of-state schools from beyond the 300-mile limit as long as they are in good standing with their state association, the venue is within the 300 mile limit, is and is sanctioned by the NFHS and IHSAA. Also, Indiana schools may now host out-of-state schools in Indiana from beyond the 300-mile limit as long as they are a member in good standing with their own state association and the event is sanctioned by the NFHS and IHSAA.

  3. Just wanted to jump in here. The rules for Community 1 and 2 are very clear. 17 wrestlers on your roster - 3 can be from another school system. We all have to load weight certification sheets to show school system and lowest permitted weight class. For middle school guys, I have to get a letter from middle school AD saying what middle school they attended and that it is a feeder to Brownsburg. No clue about other team’s situations but I believe they check paperwork. I’ve heard numerous stories from coaches about being called out if paperwork doesn’t seem legit. Doesn’t mean someone isn’t getting away with it. Just mean paperwork is required. Lastly, Disney isn’t about a “vacation” and matches for many of us. I’m not saying it’s Fargo, but it also isn’t playing with Mickey Mouse as I’ve heard some say. Many teams take it very serious. We will have fargo representation, but for the last couple of months at Brownsburg our guys have been training to win the Disney Duals. We took close to 20 Brownsburg Wrestlers there. The last two months we have had the best “open mats” we have had since the regular season. Our guys were motivated and we got better. I’ve never found any camp or tournament in over 20 years to better motivate my entire team than the Disney Duals. Snyder

  5. One of the greatest matches in recent memory and a CERTIFIED BANGER! It's a shame a full crowd didn't get a chance to see that one. Was there for it live and dem boyz THREW DAHN!!!!! Clocked an immediate 4.75/5 star rating (Generational Performance) from me. Brody Baumann's lat drop at the end was the cherry on top and solidified him as one of my favorite wrestlers to watch. One of the best state finals and overall wrestling matches I've ever seen. So fun with so many back and forth momentum swings. Dem boyz took us back to the Attitude Era with that one! Just going out there to bang!!!!

  6. With 2 matches left IN has enough of a lead to top IL and bringing home a 3rd place finish. Way to make the adjustment from the first encounter in the pool stage. From prior scores you could easily make the argument the squad would have had a close meet with 2nd place Iowa if their was a true second. Best finish in Schoolboy Freestyle history for IN too. Nice showing this weekend boys.

Not that this will sway opinions, because as SunDevils just posted, we're splitting hairs here. But Nick Lee has been named Penn St. Male Athlete of the Year. Here is the article, which also provides a good summary of his career accomplishments, including 118 wins. Nick Lee - PSU Male Athlete of the Year

    Question for Coaches

    1. Mostly yes, basically anyone that I have had that was a qualifier since 2006 did some off-season. Note more on this later 2. Depends upon the kid. Some with a lot of experience and mat time at a younger age didn't need or require a lot. Some needed more, it's really dependent upon the kid. 3. Small if you aren't honing the skills. Things have changed drastically in the past 10-15 years. 4+ Much like anything in life, there is no "cookie-cutter" solution or even an easy way to analyze what is needed for each kid. Putting in time is always good, it's what you define as time. Some kids love to train and would rather just practice and do very little competing. Some love tournaments and will be going places every week. Some are a little of both. There are so many different avenues to stay crisp with wrestling in the off-season that it takes a great balance between training(RTC, home club, academies), competitions, camps, and even spending time in the weight room. Even playing another sport, especially a contact sport, will help a kid develop as an athlete. Many kids(and even coaches) like having something short term to work for. I really liked going to Disney and other June dual events because it kept something in front of the kids as a goal to work for. Working in May and June for November seems like ages away. As kids get older off-season competition may not be needed as much. Many kids have been through the grind since they were young and only need maybe a handful of off-season events to keep them hungry and ready. In general I have had a lot of kids that started early that we have lessened the load of competing or even training in the off-season. Some of those times burnout and hating the sport was creeping in and I let them go do other things and didn't bother them as I knew once the season came around they would be refreshed and ready to go. We all want our kids to be 24/7 dedicated to wrestling whether we want to admit it or not. At times it is needed to let them be kids, let them do other things, or even let them fail. The hardest thing to do as a parent/coach is to let a kid fail or see a kid fail when you know the potential is there for great success. Many of our best lessons are learned from failing.

  12. For MD i'd go: 106: Chip Elderkin or Gabe Zirkelbach 113: Schaefer 120: Rusty Head over Kevin Head 126: Macke 132: Nick Lee 138: Boarman 145: Craig Weinzapfel 152: Joe Lee 160: Coughlin 170: Baumann 182: Blake Maurer bumps up here 195: Sollars 220: Critchfield 285: VanWinkle Through my red/gold colored glasses I think MD wins at: 106 - both MD guys were big 10 wrestlers. They beat cottey 113 - I take Seltzer here but would be a great match up 120 - toss up 126 - Macke 132 - Lee 138 - toss up 145 - Weinzapfel 152 - Lee 160 - Coughlin 170 - Baumann 182 - Maurer (could be the best match of the dual) 195 - Sollars 220 - Critchfield 285 - Marion county

  14. Two matches left IN down 15 to NJ. Indiana Gold will end up runner-up which is still the best placement in Indiana Greco history (previous best 6th) I’m sure our last two guys are going to push as much as they can to help close the final score too. Then on to what is hopefully a great Freestyle showing, as well.

Not Andrew Howe or Angel Escobedo? Back this winter I put together a list of the best wrestlers of all time. I put in values for placements at state, college, and world level events. Some are a little arbitrary, but it's a good list of GREAT wrestlers. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aFeir613jNa7JYV6p0vuh7aMKDt-9KryMRW2K0xU660/edit?usp=sharing

  21. The ever popular "Disney" duals starts up this weekend. Indiana has 24 teams represented out of over 150 teams entered. Even though the event is not held at Disney this year it still has attracted many top teams from around the country. Last year Brownsburg defeated Warren Central in the finals for an all-Indiana final for the first time ever. Good luck to all the teams competing. 32. The guy was dominating Gross until he got stuck in a bad situation. As a parent of a college wrestler, I’ve been really watching incoming kids over the last few years. Each class comes in and every kid is a state or national champ. The first few months in that actual college room and program is rough. Most kids struggle to score a point. Some of the kids make adjustments and put in the work to start and most don’t make it 4 years. Most are done after a year or two. My point is regardless of who you are… those first few months in any college program kids grow the most. I think that the Jesse that we saw putting on Gross will elevate his skills a few more notches starting now until November. He’s gonna to be a top contender out of the gate. And at that level staying healthy is tough. With all of that said.. if he elevates his skills, like I know he will before season starts and he’s 100 percent, you have to let that dude try to go get that title. I think he will wrestle unattached early on at opens like they all do. Then… first home meet… our dude bust out of the tunnel with the OSU singlet on.

  35. It is outstanding that the officials' mileage rate was increased from $025/mile to $0.50/mile. The real problem is that the IRS standard rate is currently $0625/mile. Maybe the officials' rate should be tied to the IRS rate?

  36. I disagree. Rulon beating Karelin, Slay beating Satiev and Snyder beating Sadulaev are above the Maroulis win for me. Karelin is the greatest greco wrestler of all time. Rulon beating him was a monumental upset. Same for Slay over Satiev. Sadulaev is the best wrestler in the world and has been for years. Snyder beating him was a huge upset

No. Nobody considers Flo Jo or Alison Felix to be better than say Carl Lewis, even though they may have more accolades. Same type of thing here.

  40. Looking forward to the upcoming Schoolboy dual tournament and certainly disappointed that next year it will be hosted outside of Indiana for the first time. Regardless, excited to see if Team Indiana Gold can make a run at a Top 8 finish this year. Quite a few from last year's team are present on this years team and there also appears to be a very large number of State Champs present on the team. I will be fun to watch if prior team member, @CodyLeCount (2010 Freestyle team; Current Team Indiana Coach) and coaches can lead these boys to a top 8 finish! In anticipation of the week ahead I took a look back at the historical finishes for Team Indiana at these duals. Links to the full tournament results are hyperlinked within.... in addition to some notes listing the Team Indiana rosters for the teams finishing Top 8. Some recognizable names on the Indiana teams for sure. 43. I agree, not saying Jesse can't hold his own but I think his best shot is in '28. Give him a chance to mature mentally and physically and I think if he's healthy there won't be too many people that would enjoy being on a wrestling mat with him!
    2 points
  44. One more consideration no one's mentioned: there's a good chance the possibility of taking an Olympic redshirt in his second year of university (2023-24) is on Jesse's mind in all of this. It would allow him to focus that year fully on being a true 65kg/143lb guy (no 61kg at olympics) and making a real run at being our rep. Ways he could qualify for that redshirt if it's the same as last cycle (no weight class stipulations were on any of these): 1. Top 8 at 2023 US Open. 2. Top 3 at NCAAs in 2023 AND top 2 at U23 WTTs. 3. Medal at World juniors or World U23s next year (or this year if Bouzakis were unfortunately injured in training and Jesse went instead). That option #1 seems very attainable and an Olympic redshirt is probably a significant part of discussions between Jesse and his camps.

  46. We had three state qualifiers two years ago. They all three pretty much started wrestling in middle school. We are a 4A school, I used to teach/coach at a 1A school. At both football is the top dog. 1/2. Of those three, 1 did a lot of offseason (126, 4 time qualifier, three time placer, three sport athlete. Started on football, two-time regional qualifier in pole vault) One did a few camps/open mats (170, two sport- tennis and wrestling). One only wrestled and did very little in the offseason in terms of wrestling, spent most of this time working (106 2X qualifier, injured senior year)… he did do Frosh/Soph state his first two years. 3. It can be done, but is much more difficult. I gave some examples that show its possible... but I would say it is difficult. Placing high would be almost impossible IMO. I think you could make a fair argument that the semi-state we are in makes it possible to not do offseason and still go to state. 4. More often than not offseason work is needed to get to state/place. I also feel that it can be done while an athlete is doing multiple sports. We still push our kids to do three sports. The ones who want to do well will find the time to get to some offseason opportunities/ take advantage of yours. As a team I think you can have success at the small school level with kids doing multiple sports. Busco has had two 5th place finishes, a runner-up, and a state championship during the team state era, while in many ways being the third sport for many of the wrestlers (football, and track are both big there). Working with the other coaches will really help, doing things like following the schools weight program is a big help in getting those other sports to push kids into wrestling.

Who is competing with the goats of the sport that hasn’t even hit 19 yet? jesse is amazing in neutral which I don’t see changing at all in college. Add on riding time from his rides? Definitely a contender.
