  1. All, I want to share a story about the kind of people we have in this sport. Last Saturday Greenfield had a young lady injured in a match at New Palestine High School. It was a head and neck injury that required her to be transported to the hospital via ambulance. She and her parents had never been through something like this before and were justifiably shaken. On Tuesday of this week I was called down to the athletic office. We had received a package. It was a box of flowers addressed to the young lady who was injured. They were sent from the Columbia City Wrestling Program. I know it's a little thing and some people may not understand, but it touched me and my program. People think wrestling is about working hard, sweating, bleeding, beating on people, etc..., but it's not. It's above LOVING each other. I wan't to thank Columbia City for giving my program an example of how people are supposed to love each other. Thank you!

  3. Pretty tough of you to come on a messageboard and make fun of a high school kid. We addressed this on Gorilla Radio last night. These kids, especially the top guys, are under a lot of pressure from coaches to commit right then and there. The coaches are very persuasive and use every tactic possible to get a commitment as soon as possible. Think if you were a high school kid with all the best coaches in the country calling you wanting you to wrestle for them. Could you tell Tom Brands, Cael Sanderson, John Smith, etc, "no thanks, your program isn't for me?" I know I would have a hard time. Maybe for you, you never made any decision at 17 years old that you later reneged on, but I'm guessing you have.

  5. Yeah, I owe you guys all an apology. These should have been out early in the week, then yesterday before I went to work at the latest. I’m admittedly dealing with some personal issues, but I’ve had plenty of time and it’s not a proper excuse. You have my word they’ll be finished today(meaning before I go to bed), and tomorrow I will try to write a preview as well, as a little “sorry I made you all wait so long.” Side note: to the coaches who have messaged me this week with some weight verifications that I hadn’t yet responded to, thank you very much for the info. It’s much appreciated.

    Curious On Numbers

Last year first day we had 13 kids. Finished the season with 20. This year the whole first week we had 22 and some middle schoolers without any of our football guys. Should have them in the room today! 62 in our youth program that fires up tomorrow and another 30+ on our MS roster!

  16. In year 2 here at Delta we are around 30 guys on the team... this number is up from last year! Getting more football players to grow interest in the sport! We even have a kid that was a starting offensive lineman for football team wrestle last year and talked about how it was one of the hardest sports he has ever done... and this year as a senior he came back out and will be the first to tell you that he does not like wrestling lol but because of what it did for him physically and mentally... said it was the best shape he had ever been in and wanted to get there again this year! And what's awesome is he got his buddy that is a senior offensive lineup to come try it this year with him and has been battling it out in the room! The growth from football team starting to join us is what will help us grow! We have about 30+ kids on our middle school team We have 70+ in our youth club and have a lot of young studs coming up that continue to get all their buddies to come wrestle! I think that is where it starts! Having fun and getting others to come join at the youth level!

The same coaches and programs with high numbers are the same coaches and programs you see at off season events. It's all about engagement no matter what size school you are. Coaching a high school program is not a 4 month job. It's a year round commitment just like it is for your wrestlers that really want success. Until everyone buys into that we will have what we have. Nice job Quinn I see you everywhere.

  21. By Anna Kayser If you’ve been an unfamiliar passerby in the town of Brownsburg, Ind. over the past seven years, one of the first things that might catch your eye are the purple street signs – deep purple markers adorned with a bulldog, two on each corner if you’re lucky. At least, that’s what I noticed as I drove through the small – but not too small – suburb of Indianapolis en route to the fourth official practice of the 2022-23 IHSAA wrestling season, with no prior knowledge other than what was scribbled on the notepad next to me. One thing I hadn’t taken note of prior to passing the “Welcome to Brownsburg” sign on Highway 139, and something that might give any other small-town Midwesterner the same familiar wave of recognition: The residents of this town about 30 minutes northwest of downtown Indy live and breathe Brownsburg High School athletics. The 2021-22 Brownsburg wrestling team was nothing to snub at. The Bulldogs went 18-1 in duals and extended their program-record streak to eight consecutive Hoosier Crossroads Conference championships. Jake Hockaday led the lineup with the first state title by a freshman in school history, continuing Brownsburg’s reign of crowning one champion each year since 2016. More on him later – I promise. Team State 2023

That argument will keep being confusing to people since there is already 25% of 4A taken and only 12.5% of the other three classes. You get special privileges as it is because we all acknowledge that almost every one of the 10 best duals teams overall will be in 4A. And even if Cathedral and EMD weren't involved, 6 of the 32 remaining is still 19%--higher chances than any other class. It's a sad reality of our severely limited system that the lower enrollment schools in all 4 classes qualify much less than the ones at the top of their division--no matter where the lines are drawn. Until we have an all-in model, people at the edges of qualification scoring or the edges of classification numbers will feel frustrated.

  28. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com The story seems familiar. Big city guy, through fate, ends up in a small town and falls in love with the community. Although Christmas is fast approaching, this isn’t a Hallmark movie script. It’s the real-life journey of Quinn Harris and his Cascade wrestling team. Harris is a 2015 graduate of Avon High School. Avon’s enrollment is close to 3,000 students. After high school he helped coach at Avon, then coached at Ben Davis, which also has close to 3,000 students. Last year he took the head coaching job at Cascade, a tiny high school in Clayton, IN with an enrollment of under 500. “There isn’t a whole lot to do here,” Harris said. “It’s a small farm town. 4H and agriculture are huge around here. A lot of kids live and work on the farm. They own pigs. They show pigs. The kids go hunting and fishing. It’s a much different culture than what I’m used to.” View full article

    Carmel vs penn

Top notch investigative reporting has uncovered this.... Penn and Carmel did participate in a wrestling event on Saturday. They wrestled each other, but was basically an exhibition event even though it counted as a weigh-in point and team schedule event. According to my sources the team score was 30-30 with Carmel winning on criteria Z: Best looking coach.

  36. Thanks Joe for this article! I'd been involved with the Brownsburg Wrestling Club since my son was a preschooler and he's now in his senior year. Coach Snyder coming to Brownsburg has been instrumental to keeping the talent at home (Mulkey/Lee). He's a big reason why Lee, Mulkey, Miller, Ison and Jones have stayed through HS in the community they started school in... The superintendant of schools attends home meets and conference, sectionals, regionals, semi state and state - that's a testament to his support of Snyder and the program! Looking forward to these articles throughout the season!

    State 2023 Questions

Any word on whether or not things will be back to normal for Friday night, such as having 1 session, rather than 2? And buying tickets for Saturday? Will they still be online Friday, supposedly 10 pm, and #ticketgate breaks loose again and people can't buy tickets for hours? Will the elevator get crammed full at the Hyatt Place again?

  38. By: Blaze Lowery Jordan Slivka & Carson Brewer Ohio University is home to a few Indiana State Champions that have been making a name for themselves as Bobcats. Two-time State Champion, Jordan Slivka of Cathedral, is coming off his best collegiate season yet. Finishing his last season with a 25-7 record at 157lbs, He found himself in Detroit for the DI NCAA Championships. Slivka is bumping up to the 165lbs weight class this season and was an honorable mention in FloWrestling’s 2022-2023 NCAA DI rankings. “It’s really cool knowing that I am still believed in and looked at even when moving up a weight class,” states Slivka. Slivka reminisces on his time wrestling at the nationals saying he was unable to hear the whistle when he started his pigtail match. The crowd’s roars fuel him, as he is “dying to compete” for the Bobcats this season. His goal is to do what he needs to do to get his team a MAC Championship title. Individually, his is goal is to compete to the best of his ability every single match. “All to gain and nothing to lose,” Slivka is on his path to find himself back at the NCAA Championships. Being a great wrestler at the next level comes naturally, “if you’re willing to buckle down on work ethic and show yourself how good you could be,” says Slivka. View full article

  40. Being an elite high school athlete with endless possibilities on where to further your education and athletic career can be an overwhelming task. A lot of factors to consider, things change over time and individual circumstances change throughout life. You can have whatever opinion you want, but making snide comments about a high school senior that is a great kid and as humble of person i have met, speaks more to your character than to his. Wherever he feels is best for him you can either support that or just move on with your life. Congratulations Christian! Look forward to watching you crush it on the next level

Found his opportunity and twisted Byrd off. Byrd got his foot on the wood with a 1 count. Bigger mat Jesse May have gotten a fall. Jesse was very patient and handled it well. Great job Jesse!

    Schedules UPDATED!

I copied last year's schedule and (tried to) put the dates to this year's corresponding dates for events. I also switched home and away teams for duals. I'm hoping most teams only have minor changes and can update their schedule accordingly. Before adding an event, especially a multi-team event, go to the host school's profile to make sure the event isn't already created. If the the event is created you can add your team or any other teams to the proper field. Thanks!
