  2. Hard to find the words, but this feels right. I don’t have a picture from my first practice 30 years ago. I do have one from the 1996 State Finals — back when I still thought this ride might last just a few years. Another is 2025 State Finals Last week I walked out of my last practice. Not because I stopped loving this sport. Not because I stopped believing in what it can teach. But because sometimes it’s time to close a chapter before the story writes you instead. 30 years. 11 at Portage. 8 at CIA. 11 at Carmel. And hundreds of athletes and families who trusted me to help shape their kids — it was the honor of my life. To the parents: thank you for letting me be part of your kids’ journey. You trusted me with your sons and daughters — to push them, to teach them, and sometimes to be the voice they didn’t always want to hear. That trust was never taken lightly. To the athletes: we are forever family. You know what we built in those rooms. You know what it meant to wear that singlet. Hold those lessons tight. Keep chasing hard things. Wrestling in Indiana is in great hands. It’s grown stronger, faster, tougher, smarter. I will stay connected, but my role will be different now. One thing I never imagined when I started this career was that my own daughter would one day walk this journey with me. EVP — my favorite smart ass — was there for the beginning of her own path and stood beside me at the end of mine. Sharing this time with her was one of the greatest gifts wrestling gave me. I’m attaching a few photos. One from long ago, one from today, and three of the kid who always made sure her dad never took himself too seriously. Thank you, Indiana Wrestling. We are family. Now somebody give me a "Hell Yeah"

  4. Andy, Look — we’ve bumped heads. That’s no secret. But when it came time to put up or shut up, you stepped up. $500 — Tier Two. Foundational 15. No hesitation. You were the first one to say: “Let’s build.” And that means something to me. You didn’t just support Heavy Handz Signature, you backed Fort Wayne wrestling. You backed the kids. You backed the future. I’m not gonna stand here and over-articulate it like some press release. I’m gonna say it plain: You a real one. You put the BS to the side and moved like a builder. Like a grown man. Like somebody who knows legacy ain’t about feelings — it’s about action. That $500 ain't just money. That’s seed. That’s mold. That’s momentum. You and the Fort Wrestling Facility will always have a place in the foundation. Appreciate you. Respect you. We move different now. — Nyasa Neeley Heavy Handz Signature Fort Wayne, for real.

  5. As some of you may have heard, I have stepped down at MHS. Never an easy decision to make, but I am getting married this year and would like to re-prioritize my time and energy for a new phase of life. With that said, we are now seeking a quality successor to the program. For any questions/insights into the lay of the land you can contact me at sandefers@mishawaka.k12.in.us or our assistant athletic director Sherry Keyser at keysers@mishawaka.k12.in.us https://www.applitrack.com/mishawaka/onlineapp/default.aspx?Category=Athletics%2fActivities&subcategory=Coaching

  8. A couple Steven Sandefer stories: 1.) He tore his ACL early in football season his junior year. Dude had surgery and was back on the mat for the start of the wrestling season. Then, went on to win a State Championship that season. He couldn't shoot off of his repaired knee...so trained himself to shoot with his other knee down. He did that in one season and won state. Still one of the most ridiculous accomplishments I can remember. 2.) Warming up for his finals match that year we were talking. He said something like I am winning this match. He's happy to just be here. I am not. I am winning state. His demeanor made me incredibly confident going into that match. Mishawaka job comes with some hurdles as all jobs do. That being said, it is and always will be a wrestling community. Several dads and grandpas wrestled at Mishawaka and remain invested in the program. I'd encourage anyone looking for a Head Coaching opportunity to consider this opening. Snyder

  10. Indiana wrestling family, one of our own needs our help. Class of '23 graduate Neo Cameron was the 145lbs. starter for Lake Central during the 2022-2023 season and accomplished some incredible things in his one year on the starting lineup. He was a Harvest Classic runner up, DAC and Lake County 4th place finisher, Al Smith blood rounder, regional qualifier, and spent the last leg of the season ranked in the EC semi state. He only started wrestling in his sophomore year of high school, but his hard work and grit helped him improve and break his way into the lineup in just two years. He was an amazing teammate, whose humor and optimism were a much-needed boost through the grueling season and is a great person off the mat as well. But now, Neo is wrestling a different opponent. Neo is suffering from a severe case of aplastic anemia, a condition in which his bone marrow is failing to produce the blood cells his body needs to survive. A bone marrow transplant is his best bet for a long-term solution, however, as a young African American male, possible matches for Neo very low. The National Marrow Donor Program lacks a significant number of African American males ranging in age from 18-40 in their registry, and as such Neo has been unable to find a suitable match thus far. Neo and others are left waiting for a possible match to save their lives, which is why I am writing this now. I am begging, as both a wrestler, teammate, and a friend, to please spread the word and help Neo find his match. If you or anyone you know fits the demographic Neo needs, please register at https://join.bethematch.org. And if you don't, please share the message and help others in need of bone marrow donations. The procedure to donate is incredibly safe and quick, and any serious and lasting complications are incredibly rare. The procedure itself will also not impact the ability of your bone marrow in any way, should you choose to donate. Please help Neo and others like him win the toughest match of their lives. Another copy of the link to join the registry: https://join.bethematch.org

    Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the coaches and mentors out there. Some kids didn't have supportive families during season, asking them to quit rather than cut weight or need rides to practice. If you have coached for a few years, know that at least a few kids have considered you as a father figure. Thank you for your service.

    Passing the Torch

Sometimes people say I’m divisive — I don’t believe that’s true. I’ve just always spoken directly, because I care deeply. But at this point in my life, it’s time to sit back and pass the torch. I don’t have the energy to argue or debate. Wrestling’s done a lot for me, and I’ve done a lot for wrestling. I’d be lying if I said I always felt appreciated — because I don’t. But this isn’t a bitter post. It’s a realistic one. There’s more work for me to do elsewhere now. Bigger fish to fry. I’m building something larger — something that still includes wrestling, but moves beyond it. That said: our region’s wrestling community still has a long way to go. We’re trying. But we still lack real resources and support. That’s not an attack — it’s a challenge for all of us. This isn’t me giving up. It’s me stepping into a new role. So I’ll fall back now. No bitterness. No sadness. Just a clear-eyed hope that the next generation gets from this sport what I got: discipline, fire, and legacy. Y’all have the Handz now. — General Heavy Handz

  18. By Cameron Diep After a strong 4th place finish in 2024, this Indiana squad returns with high expectations. Many members of last year’s team have since moved up to the Junior division, leaving this new group with a big question: can they rise to the occasion and bring home a 16U National Dual Team Championship for Indiana? Catch all the action live on FloWrestling from June 10–14. Roster Breakdown (88–100 lbs): At 88 and 94 pounds, Sam Rioux and Henry Antrobus both captured ISWA Freestyle and Greco State titles, showing promise in both styles. At 100 pounds, Cameron Schofield returns to the team after competing here last year. Since then, he earned Greco-Roman All-American honors at Fargo in North Dakota. 106–113 lbs: Traevon Ducking, the reigning IHSAA State Champion from Brownsburg, brings a wealth of experience. A 15U All-American in Vegas and 6th place finisher at Ironman, Ducking is currently ranked #15 in the nation at 113 lbs by MatScouts. Jeremy Carver of Cathedral is another high-ceiling prospect. The incoming freshman wrestled in both 15U and 17U divisions at the U.S. Open, placing in three of four styles and reaching the finals in U17 Greco (51kg). 120–132 lbs: Noel Verduzco (120) capped off his season with just one loss, winning the Al Smith and placing 3rd at IHSAA State. Ryan Hockaday (126) aims to break into Brownsburg’s varsity lineup, while Gavyn Kemp (132) had a standout freshman year at Roncalli, setting the stage for a big summer. 138–144 lbs: Donald Bowie (138), IHSAA State 6th placer, made a name for himself at the Al Smith Invitational with wins over two returning state medalists. Peyton Hornsby (144), the team’s only other returning member besides Schofield, was the IHSAA state runner-up and also won both ISWA styles. He has his sights set on Fargo All-American honors next month. 150–175 lbs: Another standout incoming freshman is Lincoln Hinchman, who was ranked #1 in the nation at 136 lbs in MatScouts' Junior High rankings and won the Middle School Super 32 National Championship. Also watch for Cameron Sommers (Franklin Community), Deacon Dresslar (Gibson Southern), Sean Breedlove (Center Grove), and Denny Algood (Bloomington South) — all highly talented and expected to contend at Fargo and next season’s IHSAA State Finals. (190–285 lbs): At 215, Ceasar Salas of Crown Point placed 5th at IHSAA State as a freshman — a rare feat at a heavier weight. And at heavyweight, Kameron Hazelett could be Indiana’s ‘Tyrese Haliburton’ in any tight dual. The IHSAA State Champion has drawn comparisons to Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson and is the only underclassman currently ranked nationally by MatScouts. Blue Team Lineup: · 88: Jonah Martinez · 94: Greyson Cain · 100: Kolten Land · 106: Kellen Schoeff · 113: Tate St. Laurent · 120: Jaxsen Jean · 126: Brody Koselke · 132: Evan Cryderman · 138: Bo Jackson · 144: Cash Mays · 150: Owen Porterfield · 157: Grayson Baumann · 165: Adrian Haughn · 175: Bradley Rivera · 190: Jaxton Litchfield · 215: Camden Williams · 285: Austin Oakley This year's team blends top-tier talent with up-and-coming stars. With several nationally ranked athletes and a mix of experienced returners and hungry newcomers, Indiana could be poised to make a serious run at the 16U National Dual title! View full article

Let’s say hypothetically all of the top 5 programs in state stayed in Indiana and went to the same school how competitive would they be on a collegiate level ? those schools are : Avon Brownsburg Mater Dei Crown Point Center Grove What would a 2025 lineup look like ? And for you overachievers what would an all time roster look like ?

  23. We've had similar discussions about this on the college board. While it would be nice for Indiana wrestling fans to see this, it would be very selfish to blame the individuals for taking the opportunity to attend one of the premiere wrestling programs in the nation. It is really unfortunate that the gap between the haves & the have nots is only going to get bigger with the existence of the portal & NIL money. But with that said, I am glad the kids are getting the opportunity to take advantage of the situation, even though only a select few will really be able to. I'm not going to take a shot at what a 2025 roster could look like, but... At one time, we could have had a lineup of: 125 Hildebrandt 133 Micic 141 Lee or Red 149 Lee or Red 157 B. Lee 165 ? 174 DJ Washington 184 ? 197 Allred 285 Paris Off the top of my head, I can't come up with who we could have had at 165 & 184 during those years. I'm sure some of you can help fill in that lineup.

  50. Seems like Angel is working on a PA pipeline. Brought in three PA guys this past year. Garvick (will be good after taking a redshirt year next year and sits behind bryce), Caleb Marzolino (pa runner up), Nick Pavlecheko (multiple time placer and super 32 placer). Hoping he can continue to pull these types of guys while adding a few more big name in state recruits. Add a few guys next year like Tyler Guerra (same school as tOSU stud Ben Davino, Carson Thomas (Ohio state champ and highly national ranked), Hunter Sturgill (Ironman placer and nationally ranked), Jackson Blum (4x michigan state champ), Matt Kowalski (Ohio state champ and goes back and forth with Gunner Henry), plus a few of our in-state guys. Don’t forget we have guys on the bench like Sam Goin (would’ve been an NCAA qualifier and might be better than DJ right now) and Bryce Lowery who’ve would’ve been another qualifier for the Hoosiers. The future is bright and will still be a couple more years but as a fan I like where things are headed.
