Just wanted to say the Rioux Fam appreciate all the kind words! Unbelievably proud of Luke and Nate for all their hard work and Luke for getting it done... even if he had to call me out in the interview afterwards!

  5. Anyone else listen to FRL? They gave Indiana some love today when they were answering questions from listeners. Ben Askren and Christian Pyles named us as a top 5 hardest state to win State in. Then they mentioned us as one of the best state championship atmospheres. And then they shouted out Ocampo for placing!

    Kyrel Leavell

This is a nasty level of hating. Kyrel pinned and teched his way through John Hurrle, pinned his way through Marion County, pinned and teched his way to the Al Smith finals, got two falls in the matches Warren wrestled at Team State, pinned his way through sectionals, pinned and teched his way through regionals, pinned his way through semi-state, and teched his opening round at State, won his semis 9-3, and pinned the #1 in the finals… DOMINANT without a doubt.

  7. Watching this Iowa vs Wisc dual and Rathjen takes injury time as he’s getting taken down. Official gives the injury time, Rathjen continues after a short break and doesn’t give the 3 pt td. Reminds me of one of my biggest issues watching wrestling this weekend. Coaches allowing their kids to take a time out when the going gets tough. Weak. One of the countless things that separates wrestling from the stupid sports like basketball, no timeouts when it’s getting real, you have to deal with it. Dissapointing the programs that are ok with taking a breather for that mental break when adversity has set in.

Has a single wrestler ever had as significant an impact on the Indiana state tournament wrestling landscape as this young man did? His upset win Friday night made the seemingly impossible; possible. The shockwaves of that win changed the tournament landscape for the remainder of the weekend. Hats off to you big man! You opened the door for several things to happen! BB and CG should consider making this young man an honorary member of your roster this year…at the very least, cut off a small piece of each of your team trophies and mail them to Dekalb HS.

  9. Didn’t want this to be known, but now the cats out of the bag. The injury occurred again over the summer late. The choice was to fix it and miss the season or to tape it up and try to grind it and repair it after season. He chose to wrestle as it couldn’t get any worse and to get it fixed now (after season). With that said, it popped out and back in Friday night. It freaked him out. It was slipping all weekend. If he doesn’t set it when it slips, it can go all the way out. Long story short, he didn’t make it through his placement match and we were ok with what he accomplished this season. With all of this said… He has wrestled CP 4 times. Cruz twice and Will Clark twice. You guys never had a single drink during those losses. Never took injury against those monsters. Lastly.. if you are questioning the toughness or integrity of my kid.. you have never met him or the rest of my family. We don’t roll like that. Feel free to call and discuss. The author of this post @Chris Coopercan attest for how tough my boys are. My oldest wrestled for him one summer. Busted his eye wide open at Disney. We glued it shut with super glue 5 times to ensure Columbus East got 6 every round. He still rocks his scar with honor. Proud of my son and proud of my state champs!!! Crazy how the only hate in this site over the last few days is directed to the big three. That’s the world we live in now… 10 years ago all you would see is love for kids and hard work. We live in a society where people hate everyone and everything. It’s just sad!!!! Matt Brewer 317-201-0644

  10. This past weekend I attended the ISWA event at Warren Central. I wasn't gonna do a review, but I had more than a few denizens of the Indiana wrestling scene ask me to do one. So, here I am. First, I'm not sure if these are the hot dogs that Warren usually sells, or if these are from an ISWA contracted vendor. Anyways, at first glance, the hot dog did not look appealing. It looked plucked right out of the movie "Nothing but Trouble" that starred Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and the late, great John Candy(who pulled double duty). I was ready to put buying this hot dog into my worst decisions of my life category, which includes getting married, accepting the Clockwork Orange therapy to avoid a curfew ticket, and eating a hot dog from Hanover Central. Fortunately, it wasn't that bad. It wasn't good, but, it was at least two steps above Alpo. 3 slices of pizza outta 8 Next weekend I'm going to Iowa, and on St Patrick's day, I'll be at Mooresville highschool. Hopefully the luck o' Irish will strike and the hot dog gods will gift me another outstanding experience at the home of the Pioneers. Thank you for reading.

  11. I actually feel like a lot of good things are happening off the mat. This weekend was high emotion, and that breeds tension. I saw kids that were finished staying to watch placement matches. Many of these kids weren’t from the same school, club, region or semi-state. I saw kids that don’t know each other talk and interact and support each other. I saw parents hug their kids and tell them how proud they were. I saw coaches tell a kid how much they’ve grown. I would argue there is more of that than the opposite. Bad things get a lot of attention, but I think we should focus on all of the good stuff instead. The future is bright in Indiana for wrestling. This tournament seems to get tougher every year, and that’s awesome.

  12. The first annual IndianaMat MessageBoard Hall of Fame class has been announced. Since this Hall of Fame is run by crooked media members we modified the rules right before the announcement. We are inducting three people posthumously and four via the vote-in process. Don’t be surprised if we change the rules again next year. Before we get into the inductees here are some of the general guidelines we have for this honor. 1. No admins or staff 2. Can only go in under ONE name 3. Been an active member for 5 years 4. Innovative and fun 5. All in fun We start the inductees with three people who left an impact on the board and have unfortunately passed away. The first one is grecoref aka Tom Clark. He came to Indiana from his native Ohio and became a full blown Hoosier. On the mat he was a very accomplished referee making his way to the state finals and also to a little tournament called the Olympics. On the board he was known to provide valuable information, sarcasm, wit, and humor. He was a friend to all and a great personality to have on the board. Our second inductee is The Ancient Elder aka Dick Neal. Mr. Neal was likely the greatest Indiana wrestling historian ever. In the days of paper brackets and snail mail, he acquired everything he could possibly get his hands on to incorporate into his Indiana wrestling book. On the board he always answered the historical questions and reminded us of the best wrestlers and matches of the years gone by. The last one to be inducted posthumously is Perseverance aka Eric Allred. Allred has a great story of overcoming adversity and making his life right. He was a huge fan of his son Silas and very knowledgeable about the sport and the kids Silas wrestled with. His passion for the sport and supporting others is very much missed. The currently active members are characters to say the least and have had a fun and important impact on our lively messageboard. It is only fitting that MattyB and Team Garcia are inducted at the same time. Both came on the board at the same time to wreak havoc and promote #TheCounty and mainly the “young guns” of Avon. They have continued to this day due to having sons still involved in wrestling or in the case of Garcia, just loving to stir the pot. The steel factory in da region kept RegionRat1 off the board for a few years, but he made a comeback this season. While he has stayed relatively anonymous he always loves to promote da region in his very unique regioneese. Most outside of da region likely believe the way he types is how they speak there, and they aren’t wrong. Last, but not least is the lightning rod they call General Heavy Handz. Of the current inductees he leads the league in most “vacations” from IndianaMat. Luckily for him, Mike talks Joe into letting him come back EVERY SINGLE TIME! He is never shy about promoting the SAC and his beloved Snider Panthers. View full article

  13. This! All of this is true and accurate..and there’s more factors too. Many have been mentioned already. i have been following this thread and enjoying the discussion. Here comes the purely anecdotal part…worth nothing I know, but just wanted to share. Background: I attended Hobart in the late 80’s and had the good fortune to be a part of 2 State championship teams. I know first hand the sacrifices and dedication it takes to be part of something successful at a larger school. (Only 5 classes back then). I have 6 sons, all wrestlers for a 1A school listed in Y2s list, out here in no man’s land. Wrestling was always the top focus for all my boys, despite participating in football, CC, track, and baseball. Their high school does not have a strong wrestling culture or history. We were blessed to have a coach who was working his azz off to build one, and had built up numbers and some pride, but that somewhat evaporated when he left. I sent the boys to some camps at Purdue, or even out in Ohio. My boys were very well respected in our area and experienced success at Sectionals and Regionals; however, upon multiple births to EC SS, they were all soundly sent packing…every time. My boys harbor no sour feelings about any of these things and take great pride in their wrestling accomplishments…so, I have posted all this to relay: I posed this very question to my boys (ages 29-19) and all but one responded with a resounding NO to class wrestling in IN. For them, one of the best parts about wrestling was finding out just who the absolute best is, even when they know it’s not them. One of my sons, who was a 3x ECSS qualifier, said it like this, “Yea, maybe I coulda made a deep run in a 1A state tourney, but I would have much rather went out on my shield at ECSS each time, knowing I was seeing the best in our part of the state.” It’s easier to experience success at a small school wrestling, presuming you work hard and do the grind, than experiencing success as part of a team at a small school. Reasons like commitment from fellow team mates, injuries, harvest, etc etc all factor in for small rural schools that require 5, 9, or 11 athletes. Now the success a kid experiences may not culminate in them landing on the podium at state, but it doesn’t negate the success leading up to the day they exit the tournament. Wrestling, ultimately is about preparing for life. The IN tournament is imperfect and downright mean sometimes. Just like life can be. I put my boys into wrestling shortly after their mom passed from cancer. My oldest was 12 at the time. Wrestling helped them through the grief and prepare them to have the tools to deal with adversity, challenges and also develop character, humility, perseverance, integrity, discipline and determination. 112 athletes hit the podiums each year in IN, which means there are a host of athletes who do not, but are the beneficiaries of tremendous gifts such as motivation, fortitude, humility, perspective, and reality. None of those are bad things. All anecdotal, and worth exactly what you paid for it!

  15. Everyone can have an opinion on whether or not Caden should have wrestled with his knee injury....or whether or not Preston should have wrestled with his completely torn ACL. At Brownsburg, we listen to doctors with medical degrees. After meeting with multiple doctors (who have medical degrees and aren't googling it), both wrestlers were told they could push through the season if they chose....and get it fixed after the season. It was their decision with guidance from their family. We will continue to listen to people who get paid to be actual doctors.

  17. If we want to dig even deeper into this point: I think our whole culture teaches us that being happy is the meaning of life. Which is all well and good. But the way happiness is defined nowadays has evolved into this: "obsessively chase what you think should be yours so you can be happy for you." That's a counterfeit happiness--it's a rigid individualism and potentially narcissism. True happiness doesn't happen on an island. It happens in relationships and in respect of community. Relationships involve self-sacrifice--the opposite of "get mine for me." As a parent, I'm trying to learn better how to teach "chase your dreams" in a way that also involves celebrating others' successes. It's tough to do!!

  22. In case you missed it on X or the college thread: Christian Mejia from Elkhart Memorial, Derek Blubaugh from Bloomington South, and Shawn Streck from Merrillville all picked up D2 national titles last night. Mejia had finished 5th twice before, was seeded only 3rd, and was in his final year of eligibility. Blubaugh had twice been national runner-up to his finals opponent, and had lost to him 5-0 two weeks ago, but finally got over the hump. Streck picked up his second consecutive title. Congrats, guys!!

I'm briefly stepping out of retirement to attend the Trials as an approved media member and I wanted to give folks an opportunity to suggest/request questions I can ask the athletes participating, particularly those with Indiana ties. I haven't done this in the past, but what the heck! I'll have more information and articles to come, but please feel free to shoot me question ideas, even if they are ridiculous Thank you and I look forward to sharing this journey with anyone interested.

  28. One of the most fun things about watching state is seeing those jaw-dropping moments where we realize a kid is WAY better than we expected. You guys know this: if a kid comes from a school that doesn't wrestle a tough schedule, it's so hard to gauge how good they really are or how much progress they've made from the previous season. Most of the time, those shiny undefeated records from a weak schedule get exposed at semi-state and state. But once or twice a year, our jaws drop and we go, "Oh, crap. Kid leveled up. Dude's for real." For me, there were 2 kids like that this year: Easton Doster and Noah Weaver Neither of these guys was new on the scene. And both had some off-season success that could have suggested an upward trajectory. But there were other guys with glossy records like them, too, who turned out to be on a "regular" trajectory of slightly better than last year once they got thrown in the fire. But when Doster hit that insane low single on Courtney that he could have hit on most D1 starters, it was an, "Oh crap. Dude's arrived" kind of moment. Then to see how slick he was both on attack and on defense the rest of that match on through the final against someone like Walker was super impressive. He is SO athletic and sharp and slick. Wow. And Noah Weaver? Holy Andrew Howe, Batman. That kid's got some pace and heavy hands and hips and an engine that do not stop. Geez! To go from getting smashed by fellow underclassmen Cashman and Costello at 170 at semi-state and state in 2023 to being a 190 that runs circles around #2 McConnell and leads wire-to-wire over nationally ranked and Indiana #1 Henry? WOW. "Leveled up" would be the understatement of the weekend. Mad, mad props to these two. It was so fun to watch them this weekend. Can't wait to see what they do next.

  31. Against the integrity of the rule and the sport, in my humble opinion. Being tired is not an injury and it takes away the advantage of the wrestler who has put in the work to keep up the pace for the entire match. I understand this is taking advantage of the way the rule is written, however if you believe it should include getting out of a not so favorable situation or taking a breather because you’re tired, we have a different definition of what an “injury” is.

  32. Just a grateful post! Are we not blessed as fans, what a weekend! We seen a ton of indiana #1's go down, the 1st girl on the podium and Brownsburg take over as the new chiefs of the state! It is going to be a fun ride! As the season goes on i don't think we give enough credit to coaches, refs and media for their countless hours of devotion to the sport of wrestling for these kids! Can't thank you all enough! We do great at getting in an uproar with peoples post about how great their team is etc. Trying to get people worked up and hating. These kids that wrestle are all (typically) incredible athletes and better humans! They are competitive but grow a bond like no other sport. A prime example is crown point and bburg, we all know the history but what alot of people don't see is the bonds. Cp and burg kids love being around each other when not competing! We need to at times get better at not being upset with one side or the other because of ppl's post and just be excited indiana has nationally ranked teams! How great is it having 3 top 30 nationally ranked teams? I'm grateful for it and I'm grateful for how 99% of our athletes behave! Its truly something to be grateful for. Post on recruiting all the time, I know my 2 cents won't make a bit of difference but recruiting isn't a thing and I truly believe that people want to be a part of something special. When you have team cracking nationally ranked status and schedule kids and parents want to be a part of it and not only that typically these programs have coaches, community support and same goals. We all have heard saying about "if you are around 5 millionaires you will be the 6th" or "you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with" field of dreams "if you build it, they will come". We have to stop hating on programs like the burg, cg and cp. They have all built it right and they come. Im grateful we can travel outside of the US and have teams competing nationally to be recognized in the country. Here is to freestyle season, let's get excited for lace season as my son says! Its a beautiful time of the year! Fargo is getting closer. Time for world team and fargo dreams! Grateful for opportunity. Good luck to all our summer athletes! Thank you to all you coaches, refs, media, Especially indianamat for all the countless hours and effort you put in to these kids to help make indiana wrestling better and the sport to grow! Let's all build! Grateful for you all! Congrats to all the athletes who competed this past weekend and if you didn't reach your goals time to get back to the drawing board and work, if you are graduating this sport will stick with you for the rest of your life and you are a better person for doing it! College or workforce will love you! Keep your heads held high with pride, wrestling is life for all of us, but there is a bigger purpose for our life! Keep your eyes on the prize and hes got you! Thank you indiana wrestling

One high light for me was the amount of team members both boys and girls who came up to me and thanked me for having them on the team and how much they appreciated the opportunity to compete one more time. We really are producing some great wrestlers in our state and more importantly these kids have a lot of class and respect. Indiana Gold boys battled hard but came up short 37-22. Winners for the gold team were; Mason Jones Luke Rioux Tony Wood Chis Bohn Duke Myers Indiana Blue sealed a victory for our home state 35-27. Winners were: Gavyn Whitehead Griffin Sanders Carson Fettig Michael Cain Keegan Martin Tyler Schott Brady Byrd Josiah Dedeaux The girls beat Iowa 63-12, but came up short against Illinois 21-44 Double Winners for the girls were: Tola Aluka Sophia Buechner Rose Kaplan Leila Thomas Winner vs Iowa were; Tola Aluka Sophia Buechner Rose Kaplan Leila Thomas Kyra Tomlison Alexes Spaulding Kaylea Beauchamp Jaiah O'Neal Michela Clifford Portia Weaver

As the Indiana high school wrestling season comes to an end…Just wanted to give a big shout out to all of the Indiana clubs and coaches. First generation wrestling family here. My boys were introduced to the sport by their uncle/cousin. Such a great sport and community! We have met so many great people and competitors. Blessed to have such a great community and support system. The boys have had club coaches from all over the state help in their corner multiple times w/ no ties to the boys whatsoever. Just there to support Indiana wrestling. Another big shout out to contenders and red cobra. Both have been home clubs w/ outstanding coaches and partners!! This forum and the wrestling community is outstanding.

  35. This is the kind of thinking that runs young posters down the rabbit hole chasing the wrong goals. Winning and losing a day and a post are un-controllable. Focus on what you can control. Become a great poster, don't try to be the best poster of the day or the week or the year. Time is fleeting, but memes are forever. If FCFighter170 was a young impressionable poster, he'd see this and just re-hash his old wins and forget what got him to this level to begin with, hard work, hyping up his boys, and weird connections through space and time. Sometimes our greatest posts aren't wins, and because of that we learn and we build. If Ontherise219 was only trying to win the day, he'd underrank CP and Brownsburg to get the people riled up. But Rise won't sink to that level.

  37. Easton was usually 1-2 lbs. under Thursday-Friday. Eating 3 times a day through the week. Pick a weight, like you said Nick, that you can concentrate on getting better at wrestling and not loosing weight. Made the most difference in Easton's success this year. It does take some discipline on both the wrestlers and parents, but meal prepping was also a huge part of it. We would cook all his meat (chicken, hamburger, steak, pork chops) on Sunday or Monday for the week and he would pack it for his lunches and take to school. So many little things go into being successful and these are just a few. It takes time also, this has been something me as a father, his mother and Easton have been trying to dial in for a few years now.

  38. Thank you for your kind words. Easton has been working for this since he was 5. Watching his big brother in high school & at Wabash college, learning and studying how the college guys do it at such a young age made him aspire to be the best. He is still hungry and will continue on this wrestling this summer and improving to defend his title!!

  39. Every year for the last fifty (that is about my length of recollection) people always gripe about misuse of injury time. I think that sometimes injury time is abused, but there is nothing to be done about that except maybe scoring one point any time an injury time is taken when the Official determines a score is imminent. Other than that I fear we begin to penalize a kid who is injured and that should not happen. I thinik most coaches, if they wil admit it, have had a kid who faked it to get a rest. I remember once back in the early eighties when my guy was wretling in the Regional and in the middle of a flurry he began to scream. The Official stopped the action, and I quickly moved to him. I told him to lie still and asked him where he was injured,. He looked up and said, "I'm not injured coach I just need a break." I wanted to kill him, ir was embarassing eventhough no one knew. I told him to lay there until I helped him up. I got him up and had him walk around, and then he went back to wrestling. The "break" did not help as he got beat fairly soundly. THe next week at praxctice I made him run each day. He asked why and I told him it he needed a break during the match he must not be in shape. There may have been others, but nearly as blatant.

Andrew Howe (still a legitimate claim to GOAT status, certainly Mt. Rushmore of Indiana) Reece Humphrey Steven Bradley (people forget how dominant he actually was)

If I get banned that's fine I'll make another name and come back stronger. We will be cheering on our Dogs who will be trying to all american and win national championship at all levels college. All of the haters good luck supporting all of the talent your programs are putting at the next level Congratulations to brownsburg and center grove it was only the 3 of us that could have won this weekend To everyone else: we will rebuild and grow from this but this weekend made me realize more then ever CP vs everyone! just like it has always been No one out works us.

  42. This was an incredible weekend of wrestling, and the Brownsburg Bulldogs and coaching staff earned it. Congrats Coach Snyder and team. Love competing and coaching against you guys, and the purple dogs deserve all the praise and celebration. Brownsburg and Center Grove showed up and competed hard. Congrats to both of those great teams and coaching staffs. Coach Lorek Crown Point High School Wr.

Wyatt Krejsa bonus pointed everyone in the state leading into the state championship match. Hunter May had a very dominant season as well and held the match to a regular decision 13-6. I'd have to check the stats (it's been a long season) but I think Hunter May landing that headlock in the finals may have been the only offense points given up by Wyatt to an Indiana opponent this season. Wyatt had a hell of a year and put in so much work!!

With that said, the issues popped up again Friday night. He made it that far.. he wasn’t going to quit after that. According to your post, im guessing your kid would have called it a season??? He did all he could and had to default in placement match when he couldn’t go anymore. By keeping going he helped the team win it. He’s feeling ok today and had no regrets and can’t wait for his ring. So to recap your concerns… 1. He took multiple injury times In the win against your son… that’s false 2. He took injury times during the match when he was about to get turned… false only stoppages were potentially dangerous calls by the best ref in the state. Injury time was taken after the knee was bent all crazy. Once it was stable he continued and continued to take shots in the third. 3. Now your issue is the culture of my family of hoe we handled this injury this season. I assure you my son had the best doctors, trainers avg physical therapist possible. You can’t just say… “nothing personal” and then question my kids integrity, my family culture and my parenting. That’s the definition of personal… Sour grapes much??? Again I’m trying ti be civil but you’re making it difficult. Let’s get this knee right and Caden will give him a rematch in a few months. Would that make you happy? I promise he will be a lot better then. I’m over this discussion. Again, super proud of my kid my state champs.

  48. I don't like mentioning my son on message boards but he's done with HS wrestling. I'll say this... Kyrel wrestled likely the best he ever has on Saturday. Tony put his best out there and it wans't good enough. Then Kyrel backed that up with a better performance in the finals. Congrats to Kyrel, had a great tourney! I hope he kills it at The Citadel.
