  1. In an 18-0 decision the IHSAA has moved forward with fully sanctioning girls wrestling as a varsity sport in Indiana. The sport was officially approved this afternoon after running as a separate event under the IHSGW since 2017 and two years under the IHSAA's Emerging Sport status. Indiana has been a training ground for many of the top women's wrestlers in the country with Olympians Sarah Hildebrandt and Kayla Miracle leading the way. Indiana has a strong tradition in women's wrestling and as a fully sanctioned sport it will continue to produce wrestlers with national and world level success. View full article

  3. Big changes are coming to high school wrestling this season. Over the past ten years the collegiate folkstyle rules have become almost a different sport with out of bound stalling, what determines out of bounds, and this past year the three point takedown. While many were clamoring for the college out of bounds rules with only one supporting point determining being in bounds it was repeatedly shot down by the NFHS due to mat and gym size concerns. This year though, the NFHS has decided that it is time to implement the one supporting point criteria for high school wrestling. While making the wrestling area a little bigger this rule will make it easier for referees to focus on the action instead of checking for the proper amount of supporting points of the wrestlers. On top of that change the NFHS has approved the popular three-point takedown. This year at the NCAA level they went to a three-point takedown. Many people were cautious, but also excited about that big change. After the NCAA season concluded many felt that the three-point takedown was a huge success. If these two big changes aren’t enough for you, the NFHS has also aligned with the NCAA level with adding a four-point nearfall. After four seconds on your back the offensive wrestler will now be awarded four points instead of taking five seconds to earn only three points. This was implemented in the NCAA since 2015 and last year they updated the rule to allow two points for two seconds, three points for three seconds, and four points for four seconds or more. The NFHS will follow the NCAA and implement all three scenarios for nearfall. Other rule changes include a clarification of the Technical Fall criteria and not requiring a 10-foot circle on the wrestling mat. 4. One small devil's advocate counterpoint to the idea that a tech is now too easy: Making techs and majors easier moves team scoring closer to representing actual difficulty of earning each type of win. Pins have always been rightfully worth more team points than a tech. However, tech falls have always been much better indicators of the superior wrestler. Upsets by tech don't exist. Rematch victories by someone who previously got teched are very, very rare. However, pins can happen in a variety of circumstances and are not always earned by the season-long best wrestler. What we saw in college was that tech falls were way up, but that a rematch could be a good match despite the first match having been a tech. This was not the case before. Related...close duals will now have points more accurately assigned to the deserving team. Before, a team could have 3 dominant wins totalling only 9 or 10 points, while their opponent had 3 close wins but also got 9 points. Now, those dominant wins can rightfully be 12 or 13 points compared to the 9 for the close wins.

I believe you are correct if Mendez continues tracking on his current path. 4X HS State Champ, NCAA Champ as a true sophomore & competed very well on the senior level at the latest Olympic Trials beating McKenna, Green & Diakomihalis then only losing to Retherford 3-2. Very impressive for someone who is only 20 or 21 years old.

  13. I have Parris as the GOAT even if he doesn't medal (which would be a huge upset if he doesn't come home with a medal). 3x state champ, 1 loss in HS NCAA champ, Hodge winner Age group world champ Sr world medalist US Olympian Sarah Hildebrant is the women's GOAT without a doubt. But Parris is the overall GOAT at the moment. And I do suspect that Jesse Mendez's final resume will place him above Parris when its all said and done.

  16. The reversal thing is something I struggled with initially, but in the end am fine with. Why do you think a reversal and take down should be worth the same amount? Just curious on another's perspective. This scoring situation didn't seem to cause any more stalling at the college level...in fact, it seemed to open things up. Bottom wrestlers eager to get out so they can get to closing the gap, top wrestlers eager to take chances because a) there is a bigger reward to trying to expose the opponent's back and b) if it doesn't work out, they're still up 2 points and not just 1.

  29. Know this topic has been covered to some degree, but thoughts on the best native Indiana high school AND college careers that have already been completed, and also if applicable international, world, freestyle in the last 50 years...? Here's my thoughts for starters. All of these were at least minimum one-time college All Americans. Number 1 goes to Mason Parris imho. after Parris names that come to mind are Andrew Howe, Nick Lee, Reece Humphrey, Angel Escobedo, Leroy Vega, Jack Effner, Kelvin Jackson, Brad Traviola, John Ginther, Jason and Alex Tsirtsis, Mark Whitehead, Adam Chalfant. Many outstanding high schoolers including David Palmer, Lance Ellis aren't included because their college careers were cut short and or didn't make All American status. I'm sure I'm missing a few.

  31. At the same time you have a chance to get 4 near fall which will encourage a wrestler that may be better on top to be more aggressive. Not to mentioned with only 2 point reversal it becomes more of a high reward low risk situation. For example before if you're up 2-0 and aggressive on top and give up a reversal it's tied. Now with a takedown you're up 3-0 and can work for 4 points if you get reversed you're still up 3-2. The wrestlers that are going to work for takedowns are going to whether uts 2 or 3 points. I think this will encourage wrestlers to get better on there feet and on top. I agree you may see less wrestlers choose bottom, but I also think you might see an increase in choosing top.

  32. Stalling is a judgement call and hard to have interpreted the same across the state or even country. NCAA referees work diligently to keep things as uniform as possible and we still have great variations in the way some call stalling. As much as you want to clamor about rules for stalling they will always leave a lot of room for interpretation from all refs.

  42. He's not a huge medal favorite. He'll come in as the 4th best guy and capable of beating anyone--but if brackets work out with him on the same side as 2 of the Big 3, he has to get an upset to medal. AMENDMENT: I just researched and saw that ranking points should be locked in with Mason and the Big 3 as the 4 seeds. That will mean he can medal without beating one of them and that he's a clear medal favorite. I disagree that a loss would be a "huge" upset because the rise of new, young monsters, along with upsets by savvy vets, are commonplace internationally--but him not medalling would be an upset if the draws hold.
