  7. How about Leo’s 126, freshman, Nolan Butcher. Pinned Bellmont’s Will Franze, beat ranked Dekalb’s Drew Waldron 2-1 in the semis then turns around and beats ranked Jason Prough 8-7 in the finals to be NE8 conference champ as a freshman at 126. Have yourself a day kid!

  8. Told my then girlfriend I would be attending State Finals on the date of her 21st birthday. We had a wrestler from my school in it, but I was still in college so just attending as a fan at that point. I remind my now wife all the time that she knew what she was getting into after she decided to stick with me following that weekend. She does appreciate that I’m just a volunteer coach these days, although I still spend a significant amount of the week at one age level of wrestling or another.

  9. I kind of wanted one of them to transfer for this year so they both could make a run for state. Two good young men who have bright futures. Thanks for sharing this story.

  12. That was Jared Dunn from Princeton. Don't forget he pulled magic out of a hat the very next round with another headlock when he was down 11-0 to punch his ticket.

  13. Chad Ruggeri locking up some double overs and decking Dexter Lamimore for a pin and the state title was impressive. Daniel Young and Gavin McGinley were having a pretty intense back and forth battle all the way into the 3rd of the state final. McGinley put Young on his back and was close to a pin. Then Young got out, hit a reversal straight into a cradle and got the fall. The crowd was way into that match.

  19. Do you ever get the question when wrestling is over ? Did your significant utter understand the dedication it takes to be a coach ? Well I have been married 46 years to my little princes. We meet when I was 19 - she was kinda close in age - at least that what she told me at da time. I was still pusueing the the fine sport at da time. She has spent many hours and days in venues supporting me and my trainies. Between working countless doubles at da mill and spending time watching , coaching and training wrestling it can be rough on da home life. So told her dis weekend dare were no meets for me to watch. Well I forgot about da big ten network. Well 3 dual meets on a cold region winter evening on da tube. Da ole rat has been fighting a cold and did not want to go out for liberations. So Told my princess that I was not up to going out but Had a idea. My little lady likes the Blue Clip and da hard rock. So I told that I would pay for a uber and give he some gambling $ for her and her buddy. Well those matches cost me $500. Of course I got the story I was up 300 hundo but pay it back in da machine. Well you young coaches make sure you train them right. Wrestling season is never over. I really hope with the advent and growth of women wrestling some of young guys can meet the women wrestler of your dream. As we all know we are all kinda crazy to do this sport. It would better if you had a partner who loves it like you.

  20. What a dogfight for second! Really impressed with the Huskies. North is the second-largest school in SW Indiana. If they can keep their coach and build a feeder, they will be a powerhouse! North had a few dual meet losses. They will be strong--at minimum--in the sectional and regional. Any insight with with Central, Memorial and Castle?

  22. Which program seems to consistently produce qualifiers, medalists, and/or state champions at a particular weight class? I would have to think Evansville Mater Dei at 132/130, right? EMD at 132/130 Chad Martin (1999) - All-State, 5th Place Blake Maurer (2001) - State Champion Craig Weinzapfel (2002) - All-State, 3rd Place Matt Coughlin (2003) - State Finalist Drew Lappe (2006) - All State, 3rd Place Jerry Parkinson (2007) - All-State, 8th Place Branson Schroeder (2012) - State Qualifier Blake Jourdan (2014) - State Qualifier Nick Lee (2015-16) - 2015 State Champion, 2× Finalist Kyle Luigs (2017) - All-State, 4th Place Eli Dickens (2018) - State Qualifier Clay Egli (2019) - State Qualifier Kane Egli (2020) - All-State, 4th Place Alec Freeman (2021) - State Finalist

  24. A few have. But much less if you remove the highly ranked kid that SS injury defaulted to 4th from the discussion. Often one heck of a state bracket buster and a shocking surprise for a SS when those type of defaults occur.

  25. Years ago, Joe Jabroni's dad would post on how his son was "in control" with the number one kid, then "got caught". Later, you would learn Jabroni was down 15-4 when he "got caught".

    SIAC decline…

Looking on the bright side, there are almost certain to be several retirements among South Bend HS coaches over the next couple of years. An ambitious young coach willing to take it on the chin for a while would have an open field to work with.

    CP and B-burg depth

Cp v2 would have prob 4-6 or more that would have possibility of qualifying for state and placing that are all young underclassmen. Depth in the room is what makes programs really click and then when the bell rings they are ready to answer. I am sure Brownsburg has several as well. I don't think cp v2 has lost yet if not mistaken. They are really good! Programs like st paris Graham for years had freshman and sophomores not start and then win state titles Jr and sr years from developing with the upper classmen.

  33. "Head Up!" "Stay Leg!" "Move your feet!" I do enjoy the wrestling mom yelling moves from the bleachers as if her son can hear her. All time favorite is "Stand up!". Having wrestled ISWA Masters/old guy division, all the kids I coached were mat side and were laughing their @$$es off yelling "Just Stand Up!" and all the other cliche things coaches say. They had a lot of fun with the role reversal. My, my, my how the turn tables...

  34. Chris Wildeman over Richie Diggs (sp?) for the state championship, Craig Weinzapfel had Alex Tsirtsis plastered to the mat but the ref wouldn't call it. Not a pin but when Brandon Cox had Josh Crick on his back in the 1994 Sectional Championship match the roof came off of the gym at MD. That single moment is the loudest I have ever heard that place, Cox won the match due to that move but did not get the pin. Long and interesting story on that one but maybe for another time.

    144 is a nightmare

Maybe it's because myself and many others think that Huyvaert has taken a larger step forward from last year than any other wrestlers at 144 . Huyvaert is a scoring machine , coming within 4 points of Teching a 2 time placer . We all could be wrong , time will tell .
