I think it’s the showing up 30 minutes late, FF multiple weights when guys were weighed in, AND leaving early. One or two of those okay, but ALL three at team state is hard to ignore.

WOW! I usually agree with the General on a lot of things...but turning it racial?? Then to follow it up with the Chad and Karen comment which actually sounds racist?!. Lost some respect there. Very weak. I know a lot of the wrestlers on Warren and they are great kids. Don't know the reason for the pull out but the reaction would have been the same for any team that did that. Disappointing.

I think turning it to a racial thing is a big leap. I don't doubt the talk would be exactly the same if it was EMD or perry that just up and left before the last dual of the tournament. Maybe there was a perfectly good reason for it; maybe the coach even cleared it with Avon/the event staff before they left. I honestly hope they did, because team state seems like a better tournament with WC there, and removing them over this is only going to hurt their program and their kids in the long run; those kids definitely don't deserve that. But from the outside looking in, it's not a good look.

This may be the top-recycled topic on this board: Mater Dei is on the slide/cannot compete/no longer relevant/not what they used to be. Go back to the archives of the 2012/2013 board. MD had two seniors and forfeited two weight classes. That team was dominated by freshmen and sophomores. There were several lengthy threads replete with thoughtful and non-partisan observances that the demise of MD wrestling had arrived. BTW- That team had two dual meet losses on the season (both to Bloomington South) and finished fifth at the IHSCWA duals. Two years later, MD won said event. Since then, Mater Dei has fielded a couple of competitive teams and won one or two big matches at Gainbridge. This year's edition of the Wildcats reminds me a lot of the 2012/13 team. Lots of inexperience! Two of the starters are first year wrestlers. Do you reckon any of the other seven 4A teams at the IHSCWA have a single first year starter? A month ago, this team was hammered by Avon. MD pulled out the win over the talented Orioles with a spirited team effort. I love what Center Grove is doing with their program. They are tough, top to bottom. Even still, MD put up a good fight and managed to take a couple of chunks of meat out of CG. Tiny Mater Dei has an enrollment of 483 students. It is a perennial challenge to field a competitive team. It is amazing how far this team has come in the course of this season. While I don't see a team State Championship or any future D1 National Champs in this line-up, I consider this product as one of Greg Schaefer and Company's greatest coaching jobs.

Unless WC has a valid explanation, they shouldn’t be eligible for Team State next year. Others have mentioned this but this is the type of shenanigans that the IHSAA used to justify eliminating the team portion of the post season. Fortunately the IHSWCA can hold schools accountable for this type of tomfoolery.

Was thinking about this one last night over a cold one. I think the ref allowed them to stay in that position so long because the Brownsburg wrestler had the EMD wrestler around the waist and if he could have rolled him or popped his head out while being in an illegal position and he could have gotten the reversal. With that said, an illegal headlock should be called upon application. Still was bad. Cats looked awesome yesterday. People suggesting that they are not competitive in 4a are not correct. Look forward to our visits to Evansville next month!

well said. so tired of seeing apparently a lonely dude using passive aggressive baiting techniques using innuendos to draw in attention upon themselves, then attacking others to get more attention. yes that's directed toward you, the one that flaunts a military name but falls well short on the integrity of those that actual truly carry a military title.

That’s incredibly weak if Warren Central conceded defeat because they already lost to Avon by 4. Last time the 215 match was decided in UTB, flip a one point match and WC wins. Anyone excusing or arguing for WC’s actions are losers. The whole purpose of wrestling is to show up to events, toe the line, and compete. Forfeiting five weight classes when you have 50 guys on your roster and leaving competition early is the antithesis of what we are as a sport. Only way this is excusable is if there is some tragic outside reason, but no one yet has given a reason like that. If Warren Central doesn’t want to compete, then kick them out. At least a year or two ban from team state.

And they literally won it in 2021…why drop ?

Slamming the team is what I said. The team consists of coaches, student athletes, managers, their supporters. Talking about permanently banning them. Sounds creepy and insidious. And has some undertones to it that I might consider culturally biased. I see the demographic of the Warren athletes and I see them getting hosed all the time like at the Al Smith. The officiating was totally biased as if they didn’t want the kids from Warren to win. Now don’t try to mansplain something to me like I can't read between the lines and I haven’t seen this type of Good Ol’ Boys getting their panties in a bunch about a situation that doesn’t concern them. A bunch of Chads and Karens.

No, Mater Dei got 4th today. They pulled some Mater Dei magic from the old days and squeaked out a win. They battled Center Grove in a surprising close dual. They could go down to 2A if they really wanted to and win every year but that's not in their DNA.

Just my 2 cents, but with teams begging to get into this tourney, why would anyone let Warren Central return. Save even more time next year and don’t even come. 15 min drive and show up an hour late and leave 2+ hours early. Stay home.

Rochester is far and away the best team in 1A this year and would make some serious noise in 2A. As far as seeding went, West Central went into this tournament in a no-win situation. I was honestly just hoping for a top four seed after edging out a banged up Rochester team at the Joe Burvan Duals. If we would’ve been seeded below Rochester, I guarantee there wouldn’t be one West Central supporter complaining about that. WC belonged in the small gym all day long with the product we put on the mat today. I do not post on Indianamat, I just look like thousands of others do. However, being from one of the smallest schools in the state, competing with the great programs we did today (and in 2014, 2015 and 2023), it’s always been humbling and great for us. Indiana has about 315 schools with wrestling. California is the only one that you could say has 3x the schools with wrestling. Ohio has just over 500 and Michigan has around 450 schools with wrestling. Your basketball analogy fails to recognize the massive attendance drop off after Damon Bailey graduated. But we won't let the facts get in the way of a good story.

As a westsider the recruiting thing just makes me laugh when I speak to friends from up North. One thing that has helped keep Southern IN wrestling and yes also MD wrestling better is pretty simple: MCW Club. That's a simple fact!

Wow, officiating out to get Warren too? I was at al smith and feel officiating has alot of tough calls and prob taking applications if we can do better, I think they all do a great job and won't always be calls we like just like these threads where we won't always like what ppl post! I know you had nothing but good intentions on this post but came off different in a few ways. I truly believe this would be the same topic no matter the team or "demographic" of athlete. If they have legit reasoning so be it but I think it was more the way it happened no matter what team it was. Let's not make it more than what it is, it is a big event that the team no matter what team should handle with professionalism and feel honored to be apart of. Alot of hard work, dedication is put forth to put these great events on and that should be respected. With that said, if there is a legit reason for all that happened then nothing should happen but if it is just carelessness it should be addressed

Shout to Floyd Central for taking home the 3A title, taking down both the #1 & #2 ranked teams. I saw this coming only after their showing at the MD Classic.

“Bush league” To clarify I don’t believe anyone is “slamming the kids”.. I think everyone is bothered that the “leaders of young men”(coaches and AD) thought this was a wise move or the right thing to do.

I agree, whats sad is the selfishness (unless a valid reason) to pull a team like that when so many people work hard to put this great event together. This event is fun and alot of ppl work hard to get these mostly ranked kids together to battle and have a good time and now there is a team that is short on matches due to wc pulling. I'm sure alot of team would be honored to be apart of team state! Absolutely should be banned from team state and its a shame! Imo! Side note: all the hard working people that were involved with hosting and putting team state together thank you for all that you do for these kids! Indiana is blessed!

I just want to know what happened with Warren Central. That’s wild they just left plus the forfeits with no explanation.

I’d say it has to do with both the Ihsaa and their policy of only the champion matters and a large percentage of the population who can’t handle change, even when it’s for the better. People in Indiana love their back when I was growing up start to a conversation

I just don't see why MD would ever make a move down. Coach Schaefer definitely had his team ready to perform yesterday. Kids today might not know of the 70's, 80's, 90's or even 2000's MD history as well, but you will always have a tough battle from a MD wrestler even if their foe has a superior talent or skill.

Ohhhhhhh but Hook and a Half....... This MUST mean they are recruiting! How else would such a tiny school compete with ALLLLLLLLL these juggernauts? HAHAHAHAH! I love this sport! God save EMD!

Interesting that nobody on here has presented the reason why they did not wrestle or who knew why, but many have jumped to the conclusion that Warren should be punished as a result.

4-5 are for sure a possibility . I think the most dominate looking of the 7 are Jendreas and P. Clark.

Triveline has does boy lOOKing might strong - lots of time at his gym Hanover 2 big boys are Purdy good. EC semi state is Purdy darn deep at HVY. 6-7 deep wit quality. A couple of boys are going to being eating cheese wiz and crackers on da couch fEB 16. Region ladies be getting ready to home some scrap iron next week. We got some hammers up here ! I would say 5 for sure definitely have a chance. I think in modern era no team has had more than 4. So if done could be a record breaking year .

Odd year to have this argument. They just placed 4th amongst the largest schools. Why go down in class and compete with the smaller teams with what would logically have less depth? Heck, why 3A? I think by enrollment they would be a 1 or 2A school. That doesn’t sound like fun for anyone.

Less than 200 students in the school... crazy. Plus, one transfer away from having a possible 4x champ in Clinton Shepherd, if I understand the situation correctly. I'm impressed.

The EMD hwt is a first year wrestler. Why throw him out there against one of the best heavyweights in the state and ruin any of his confidence of coming back out

I hear ya Shep. My problem is why did all the tough calls seem to go against Warren? I don't have a dog in the fight. Officials are not beyond reproach. When people tell me "they aren't perfect" and "they sacrifice their time'," or "he is a good guy, I've known him for years"......so does that mean that they don't have personal biases? I've been around the block, and you can say "They do a great job," until they don't. Am I supposed to not say anything?
