  1. This is a great read http://www.dailyjournal.net/2019/01/17/center_grove_wrestler_uses_troubled_past_as_motivation_for_the_future/

  3. I believe 126 will be one of the most exciting Championships having a potential 3 timer with the potential 2 timer or the Potential 4x Timer .

  4. Maybe his weight loss plan didn't allow him to make scratch at 145 until this late in the season, and if he couldn't beat his teammate at 152, he would have to bump to 160 to make the lineup. Just a possibility.

I agree. I played DI baseball and while they are different sports, I can't imagine the level of commitment required to be a national caliber athlete under such a microscope. In college we drank and partied, played games hung over, chased women, stayed out all night sometimes. We were still good enough to make the NCAA Tournament one year and a solid program the others as well as having a couple of guys good enough to make the Majors. I never wrestled at a high level, but I am pretty confident there aren't a ton of guys standing on the podium at the end of the year doing all of that. There are times I wish I was more dedicated and would have liked to see how good I could have been, but I am also smart enough to know I had physical limitations that would keep me from getting drafted (too short, didn't throw hard enough). Nonetheless, I have nothing but admiration about the commitment these guys make to be the top at the college or high school level.

  6. Great read on a good group of kids. I hated to hear Trae is out for the season. Always disappointing to see someone work so hard and get a bad hand like that.

  7. Cummings also only wrestled half the season after having ACL surgery during the summer.

  8. Not real sure how I feel about this quite yet. Admittedly......Silas’ primary goal is making the Cadet World Team in late May/early June. Definitely need to find some clarity as to how this could/couldn’t translate with World Team training. Aside from that variable......we were planning on competing there this year as a Final Folkstyle tourney, chasing a match-up with Ferrari. Definitely somewhat of an interesting curveball at the moment.

  13. Ten matches qualifies you to be seeded based on winning percentage.

  14. Per the rules "the main objective of seeding is to have outstanding wrestlers separated in the brackets so that they will not meet each other until the finals." I think that the rule writers assume that a wrestler who was on the cusp of making it to the state meet the previous year defines you as an outstanding wrestler. 10 matches qualifies you to be seeded, thus that is the 1st question. Next is head to head competition followed by common opponents. So if a returning semi-state quarterfinalist has lost to someone else in the sectional or has a worse record vs common opponents, he/she would NOT be seeded over his opponent he lost to or has had more common opponent success than--provided said wrestler meets the seeding criteria.

  15. Good info. I didn't know that about the match. I just saw the final score - which was still close.

  16. Thanks. I’m a second year parent in high school wrestling and just trying to educate myself on the technical aspect of wrestling, seeding, brackets, and this whole weight rules and seeding criteria from IHSAA. Appreciate it!

  17. I don't know the situation at all, but maybe he couldn't be the varsity 152 and bumping to 160 was the only way to get into the lineup. Maybe he knew he was going to drop down so he had to weigh close to 145 to do it legally. Just one possibility.

  18. Might explain the "much lower" winning percentage

  19. Essentially get a degree in Rocket Science and train in a Jedi temple for 6 year, then and only then will you be able to understand what the IHSAA is thinking.

  20. The tournament has been moved to Friday at 5:00 pm at New Palestine HS due to weather concerns. This announcement was just made within the last hour or so. Tons of great wrestling will happen at this tournament as usual. Team race could get interesting.

As a former college athlete, I can attest from experience (and not exactly a stellar one if you know what I mean) that adding a sport to an already tough college academic load is like having a 20-30 hr/week job in addition to 12-15 hrs of class and what should be at least 24-30 hours of studying. That's 8-10 hours a day seven days a week. It is a grind. Toss in weight management issues and you're talking a monumental task to complete during the season. My hat is off to all college wrestlers in all divisions. By my heart goes out to those from our great state.

Unfortunately there will always be comparisons to Red and Lee going on. In all honesty it is not fair to either kid as both are phenomenal and have accomplished a great deal before they have turned the ripe old age of 21 yet. They both will continue to have a lot of success at the NCAA level and hopefully the World level. I would love to them to never have to wrestle again and one go up to 149 so Indiana can have national champs at 133, 141, and 149...then throw in Brayton, a couple Davisons, and Parris to add more!

  23. Really like this kid’s upside. If not for the broken arm in Regional final last year, he’d likely have been a SQ or better as a freshman. Definitely a little slept on in my opinion. Really looking forward to seeing him make a run at things.
