Congratulations Bulldogs

I’ll be the first to admit that I was convinced that this was their down year, WRONG! Remarkable team effort and a true testament of a great coaching staff.8 points -
OK, I am going to post this knowing there will be quite a few who disagree, but just getting tired of a few things: I have been around this sport for the last 46 years of my 50 years and wrestling is missing the boat for 90% of the wrestlers. I read all the posts here and people talking about why numbers are down. Here is my assessment. The top 2-3% of wrestlers in Indiana are better than they were when I was in high school. I officiated this weekend and have watched my son wrestle this year. There is plenty of blame to go around. This weekend as well as almost every other weekend, I have seen more kids raking kids faces, punching kids in the face, ribs, and pushing them after they go out of bounds, and trying to torque a knee after the whistle blows amongst other things. I am not soft, but I am quite sure a good hard cross face is ok when trying to pick up the far arm or fight off a shot, but the re-rake and subsequent rake is ludicrous. The coaches say he is just being physical. Totally crap, it is not a move and you are not working anything but trying to intimidate the other opponent or injure your opponent with brutality. If you watch the best kids in the state, I rarely see this happen. It is with the second tier kids and/or programs. Teach your kids how to wrestle, the above is not wrestling. This is not college, this is high school where 90% of the kids may not even wrestle in college. They are out because their parents told them to get involved and be a part of something, or were talked into it by a teacher or another coach. Why would these fringe kids (70%) even want to be a part of a sport where some "heavy hands" have been equated to punching, raked faces lead to bloody noses and lips, and the extra pull on the knee or shoulder equates to stretched ligaments or eventually worse. When the whistle blows, stop wrestling the best you can, coaches lead by example and let the kids know they did something wrong instead of arguing he is a good kid and would never do this. These fringe kids will either quit during the season or worse yet, never come out the following year. No fight shorts or uniforms will change that. So by all accounts wrestling is a great sport and can hep teach kids a lot about life and to be great workers and citizens of this country. As I always was told, "I will never miss an opportunity to teach or guide you whether you like what I say or not and you may not always come out on top, but life is not about short cuts, but about what kind of person you are in the long-run." With this being said, I love wrestling and what it has done for me in my life and hope that others will enjoy it also. The more who experience what wrestling is really about and the hard work, it will pay dividends for life. Those who don't understand will still be making excuses for their kids and rationalizing where we are going. I would challenge the wrestling community which includes the coaches, parents and officials to make the right calls and do the right thing. Maybe it will bring in more kids to the sport and maybe it won't. One way, I am pretty sure we will head down the same road, the other, it will not get worse, but maybe a chance for more to experience this great sport. TP5 points

There's some solid parenting. Just don't be a snowflake when someone takes the role of raising your kids and tells them to watch their language and shut their pinhole later when they're talking like a truck driver in public4 points

Garrett Stuckman vs. Dylan Goudy is why I love this sport summed up as easily as possible.4 points -
Wrestling is a legalized street fight and you need to be ready to scrap when you step on the mat. It is a physical sport that boys need to expend their energy and use their aggressiveness in a positive manner. With that said there are times when there are dirty moves or extra-circulars that are not needed. The referees and coaches need to step in and emphasize to these kids that this is not warranted.3 points

This was Southern Wells first trip to the tournament and we had a blast. A big thank you to everyone who organizes the tournament. I think the big delay was just trying to keep the rounds together for all 3 classes. 1a duals were way ahead of 3a. Always room for improvement but I hope we earn our opportunity to compete at this tournament again!3 points -
Hats off to the little wildcats for a hard fought win over my little Orioles. Great team / great sportsmanship. Proud of my guys too. The Orioles have made the finals all 9 years of the existence of the tourney. Those that have came to this over the last 9 years know, how hard it is to make the finals once. A HUGE thank you to the ISWA staff. For those that don’t know, these are the same people that ran team state in Fort Wayne last night. They pretty much did not sleep this weekend. These folks get a ton of complaints as almost no complements. THANK YOU all!!! Looking forward to year 10 next year! 2 points

I'm curious as to how an organization or group of people want to get more media coverage, but force the media to pay for entry into an event. Even at local dual meets media do not need to pay admission.2 points

I can’t stand the hard push after they are out of bounds. I really really hate the face raking. Makes me immediately dislike the wrestler. It is just dirty. If a coach coaches that they should quit.2 points -
It is not as many of the fringe kids doing it. They are trying to wrestle as they have been taught. Some of the kids doing it are what I would consider the second tier kids because they are frustrated they are not pinning or beating someone as much as they think. I had someone yell back this weekend, well the kid is not opening up. Too bad, the official's job is to call this, not the wrestler to rake his face back and forth until he opens up. We have gotten to this point, because it is not called enough. If those kids are doing they should be called and their coach should call them out and teach them. Win or Lose, do it respectfully. I would agree, we continue to emulate what we see on tv and what is taught.2 points

Like everything in life , there is room for improvement but keep in mind that this event wouldn’t take place without the coaches and Indianamat’s staff , The Ihsaa decided that this event wasn’t needed.... Joe and his team are always in need of volunteers or if you are certified referee that would be even better... We do really appreciate everyone’s hard word that put this together and put in the hard work running it..2 points -

That I don’t know. All I know is that it was a fantastic match with two roughly equally-talented kids fighting as hard as they could to get their team a championship.2 points -
1.GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS: lets first talk about our female wrestlers from Team State. Alara Boyd Yorktown won girls regionals with three pins, as expected. But, at team state she won 2 matches by pin and lost to Gimson by pin in the second. And this is at 138lbs.. You don't see girls having success at that weight. Where is she going to college? Annalyse Dooley West Vigo won girls regionals with three pins and went 1-3 at team state. Tori Buchanan West Vigo won girls regionals and went 3-1 at team state. Tough Girls! Kayla Miracle broke the glass ceiling and paved the way for these girls to show they can hang with the boys. 2. MATER DEI: Really disappointed in MD. I guess I wanted to see the MD from the past where they could pull huge upsets, get pins and not get pinned.. but they're young and look for them to compete next year. 3. BROWNSBURG: Showed you can't buy a title and that upsets are still a thing. This cements Brownsburg's legacy up their with Mishawaka, Penn, Mater Dei, Perry, etc.. (Avon too, I guess lol). 4. UPSET CITY! North Posey comes in UNSEEDED and places third. I guess no one told them they weren't seeded! 5. DONNELL WASHINGTON/NICK SOUTH: State champ versus State champ! Props to Donnell for bumping up. Donnell has faced two state champs this year and is 1-1 against them. (He may have faced one at Brecksville, IDK). South shows us last year wasn't a fluke or this years S32 second place finish. IU getting a good one! What are your top 5 thoughts?1 point

By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com Kyle Cornwell was ready to give up wrestling for good. Almost every time he stepped on the mat, he would eventually watch his opponent have his hand raised in victory. The losses piled up, and the frustration mounted along with it. “I’ve had some mental blocks in wrestling,” Cornwell said. “In sixth grade I was something like 1-26. I was so frustrated with myself. I didn’t think wrestling was for me. I really wanted to just throw in the towel.” That’s when Cornwell got a little encouragement from his family and one of his closest friends. “My dad (Jade Cornwell) and friend Jalen Morgan talked me into sticking with wrestling,” Kyle said. “Jalen told me we have to start training. We’re not going to get better without putting in the work. So, we started training. We trained and trained and trained. By my 8th grade year we went to a preseason national tournament in Iowa and Jalen finished third in his weight class and I won mine.” That tournament success vaulted Cornwell’s wrestling career. He fell in love with the sport and is now ranked No. 1 in the state at 220 pounds and will wrestle for Indiana University next season. The Elwood senior’s training partner is still that same kid that told him in sixth grade to stick with wrestling. Morgan is ranked fourth at 182 pounds. “Jalen and I have been friends since fourth grade,” Kyle said. “We wrestle every day at practice. He has more speed than I do, so that helps me, and I am stronger than him, so that helps him.” Last season Cornwell finished fifth at 220 pounds. He was a state qualifier in the same weight class in 2017. He is happy to be ranked No. 1 this season. “It’s really a relief to be ranked No. 1,” Cornwell said. “Yeah, you have a target on your back a little, but I’ve been ranked behind Mason Parris for a while and it’s nice to have that top spot now. You have to be confident to be that No. 1 guy or you are going to lose. You don’t go to a match with your head down. You know who you are and that you can beat anyone.” Cornwell wrestled Parris last season in the New Castle semistate championship. That match didn’t work out well for Cornwell, as Parris pinned him in 1:14. “It was a really good experience to wrestle Mason,” Cornwell said. “He’s one of the top kids in the nation. It opened my eyes to what I need to be like and what I need to be training for. It really helped me step up to that next level.” Cornwell committed to improving in the offseason, with a focus on pushing the pace and scoring. His mission is to score as many takedowns and points as possible. He wrestled over 100 matches during the offseason and feels right now he’s at the best he’s ever been. “Kyle has a funk to him that he’s been getting into for the last few years,” Elwood coach Fred Short said. “He likes to do the scrambling like they do in college. In high school it’s a little weird to see when you’re not used to it. He is a lot slicker now than he was last year. I think a lot of that is because of wrestling with Jalen and really having to be quick against him.” Cornwell’s goals this season were to go undefeated and win a state championship. Elwood, as a team, is down this season. The team had 10 wrestlers early on but are down a few since that time. Coach Short, who has been a wrestling coach in some capacity since the early 1980s, is retiring after this season. View full article1 point

Some exciting wrestling yesterday. I do have to say though that it was ran poorly for such an event as this. The table help, although I know are volunteers were pretty bad. The refs weren't much better throughout mats 1-12. I sure hope semi state and state go smoother.1 point -

Um, How about Brownsburg??? Taking out Perry Meridian w Sam Fair back, Cathedral, and Warren Central in one tournament?? One hell of a day. Congrats. 3A Mats: Cayden Rooks looked untouchable. Asa Garcia looked untouchable. Mater Dei looked young (maybe deflated) in the 3rd/4th dual, but super promising. Avon is incredibly improved, and not just with the addition of Brewer. Great to see Carmel back. Roncalli will be a force next season. The IHSAA finals are going to be insane. Two schools with 2 champs seems highly likely in Avon and Columbus East. Can anyone overcome that to beat them?1 point -

I don’t want to take anything away from the Perry kid, but this was decided by the ref. Lohrey had him down 13-2, had him cradled 3 times and the ref wouldn’t call the pin. The kid rolls him over and the ref immediately smacks the mat.1 point -
