Best Teams Without a Title

Looking at 2021-22 Brownsburg, I’m wondering how many teams out there were dominant but didn’t capture the title at the end of the season.

I can name a few…

  • 2013-14 Franklin Community | 20-0, IHSWCA Team State Duals Champions, snapped Perry Meridian’s 3-year win streak 27-26, beat #2 Mater Dei in the finals, IHSAA Runners-Up to a 12-5 Cathedral who placed three in the finals
  • 2014-15 Evansville Mater Dei | 11-0, IHSWCA Team State Duals Champions, beat Perry Meridian 31-27 in the finals, finished third at the IHSAA State Finals behind 14-7 runners-up Cathedral and 31-2 champions Penn
  • 2014-15 Perry Meridian | 20-1, IHSWCA Team State Duals Runners-Up, lost 31-27 in the finals to Mater Dei, #1 ranked team in State Power Poll during postseason, 13 Semi-State Qualifiers, 11 in the ticket round with unfortunate meltdown that saw eventual state qualifiers (including a third placer and champion) Sunny Nier, Jack Servies, Brett Johnson, Noah Warren, and Chris Ridle all get denied at New Castle.
  • 2015-16 Brownsburg | 17-0, IHSWCA Team State Duals Champions, beat #1 Warren Central in the finals, finished runners-up to Warren Central with six medalists including a championship from Brayton Lee and three third place finishes from Ty Mills, Blake Mulkey, and Nathan Walton from five semifinalists total.
  • 2016-17 Perry Meridian | 17-1, IHSWCA Team State Duals Runners-Up, lost to #1 Brownsburg in the finals, later beat the same Brownsburg team two weeks later on Senior Night to become the #1 team in the final dual ranking. Team had three eventual state champions in Brayden Lowery, Brayden Littell, and Noah Warren.
  • 2017-18 Perry Meridian | 18-2, Ranked 46th in the nation, IHSWCA Team State Duals Runners-Up, lost twice to #1 Brownsburg, finished fifth at IHSAA State Finals with three in the finals with a title from Noah Warren. Defeated eventual IHSAA State Champions Cathedral 27-25.
  • 2017-18 Brownsburg | 15-0, Ranked top-25 in the nation, IHSWCA Team State Duals Champions, finished runners-up to Cathedral that saw a controversial head-to-head match-up between Blake Mulkey and Cathedral’s Zach Melloh ultimately decide the team race.
  • 2020-21 Chesterton | 21-4, IHSWCA Team State Qualifier, East Chicago Semi-State Champions with seven individual titles, IHSAA State Runners-Up to Evansville Mater Dei.
  • 2020-21 Perry Meridian | 16-2, Finished third at IHSWCA Team State Duals and IHSAA State Finals, 9 state qualifiers and six semifinalists, most points ever for a third place team, defeated Brownsburg, Center Grove, and Crown Point in an impromptu dual meet-up, and also defeated Cathedral.
  • 2021-22 Center Grove | 17-1, IHSWCA Team State Duals 3rd, finished third at IHSAA State Finals with two state champions in Hayden Watson and Drake Buchanan.

2004-2005 Avon IHSAA Runner Up
2013-2014 Avon no team state. Probably the best dual team Avon had after 2005 or 2007. IMO

2014-2015 Avon 5th at IHSCWA, only loss to penn in pool play in a barn burner believe over Penn got 3rd.

2017-2018 Avon IHSAA Runner ups. I might be wrong on the year here may have been the 2016-2017 team.

Avon has had an amazing stretch where they have been highly competitive from 2003 until now!

This is also coming from an Avon Grad so take it for what you will 😂😂

Not sure how we would have faired against 3A/4A schools in team state, but I think we could have ran with some teams a little.

Prairie Heights, 2015-16 🤔:

Season record 35-0

2015-16 War on the Wabash Champions with 7 individual champions

2015-16 New Haven Super 10 Champions

8th place at the Al Smith Classic with 5 medalists (3 runner-ups, a 7th and an 8th)

2015-16 IHSWCA 1A Team State Champions

2015-16 West Noble Invitational Champions

2015-16 NECC Regular Season Champions

2015-16 NECC Tournament Champions

6 All-NECC Wrestlers; 4 Champions, 2 Runner-ups

2015-16 Sectional Champions with

6 Sectional Champions, 2 Runner-ups and a total of 14 Regional Qualifiers

3rd place at the Goshen Regional

3 champions and 3 runner-ups

6 Semi-State Qualifiers

5th place at the FW Semi-State with 2 runner-ups, a 3rd place, and a 4th place

4 State Qualifiers, 2 State Medalists

3 Academic All-State Selections

1A #1 State Ranking

#8 Overall State Ranking

Wins over State Ranked Leo, Jimtown, and Yorktown

4 wrestlers each with 100+ career victories

Outscored opponents 2,175 to 422

4 Shut-outs

That was one heck of year against solid competition as a 1A school.

Just my 2 cents...

The teams that are listed as IHSWCA Team Duals State Champs do have a title.

I realize that those aren't official titles per IHSAA, but...

Clearly the best measure of a team is through a dual tournament format.

Fair point. You’re right.

A little biased here, but I think the 03-04 Portage team should be on this  list. It was a very good duel team. Beating MD in the first round of the day.  Then losing to LN  (the eventual champs) in the next round, coming down to the final match in the :30 second escape or ride out OT.

Whiteland?

The League No GIF

04-05 whiteland squad did lose in the regular season by 1 to the runner up Avon team. :)  Had a kid not make weight at team regional and whiteland had to shuffle their line up and Avon widened the gap at team regional.

That 04-05 Avon team was GREAT top to bottom.  The whiteland team that year was solid and had 4 Fargo all Americans in the line up.

B south had some great teams in the early 2000s also with several state champs.

The 04-05 Avon team that was runners up was NAILS. Lynn Panko is currently still special ops in the army.

The 06-07 Avon team was also very good with 7 state qualifiers I believe. Dealt with injuries and flu the week of team state that year!

So many great team out there that never could get over the hurdle of winning that state title!

This was a great team that we lost to in the Team State finals (126 & 182 were the difference). With that being said, you still would have had a hard time competing with the top 3A (4A now) teams, IMO. The difference between 1A and 4A is immense…even for the greatest 1A team in this era.

It was a barn burner for sure! We definitely had some fire power, but not sure we could touch the big dogs!

2003 Griffith team was stacked.  Undefeated until the IHSAA Dual Team Championship losing to Mater Dei, who had probably the best team ever in Indiana history.

Probably the best dual in Indiana history talent wise. 7 state champs, 14 or 15 state qualifiers, 4 NCAA D1 all Americans

Most posts are about a loaded team not winning the IHSAA title at Conseco and I get that but the real winner pick is the 2016-17 Shenandoah Raiders not winning the very Prestigious IHSWCA 1A Team Title.

24-2 season record. 4 state qualifiers, 3 placers. Dallas Pugsley, Ryan Surgey 8th, Josh Gee 8th, and AJ

Black 2nd. Also had Hayden Lohrey that didn't qualify this year but was a 2x SQ and had eventual 2x state champ Silas Allred on team that didn't qualify this year losing very tough ticket round match.

Won 1st ever team sectional title in school history. Runner Up at Regional to Franklin County. 7th at Semi state.

Beat rival New Castle in dual for 1st or 2nd time in all of my life I can remember and have gathered. 5th as team at a still very tough Spartan Classic. Just didn't get the big one, lost to a very loaded and well coached Prairie Heights team that year 39-27. Great year for the team and program, filled with great coaches and parents and supporters!
