    Biggest Rivalries

Leroy Vega vs Greg Schaefer met 3 years in a row on Saturday. 1995 freshman Schaefer wins in semis, 1996 Vega hip toss in final seconds to win in the quarters. 1997 Vega wins in title match. Schaefer wins as freshman and again as a senior. Vega wins his final 2 years. They would go on to wrestle each other in college and sit in opposite corners as coaches. Two of Indiana's best! If someone has a video of any of these matches please post!

  2. There's no rivalry here... partners from a young age and always pushed each other hard in practice. These two were battle tested and mentally prepared for the state series run. Knowing that these two would see each other at our Dual, County, Conference, Sectionals, Regionals, Semi-State and State only sold more popcorn at the events. They had their battles on the mat and Asa got the best when it counted, but we're his biggest fans when he's not on the other side of the line. Fun times and wouldn't have it any other way! #cwaog

How about McGill vs Cosgrove? I doubt anyone wrestled 7x in the same season.

David Maldonado and James Leavell met twice under the lights, both winning one. That was a pretty good rivalry.

As mentioned earlier Eppert vs. Wright has to be top of the list here. I’d be amazed if there was another Indiana HS rivalry that matches it. Two high caliber wrestlers that face each other in multiple matches, at multiple levels of state, and in multiple state finals over the course of several season. There have been some top IN wrestlers have one or two years where they ran into each other a couple rounds of state, but Eppert vs. Wright was a constant collision course.

  6. VanDeventer from Bloomington North and Kleinhans Columbus North I believe wrestled 8 times in 2004. Kleinhans was state runner up with 8 losses, all to VanDeventer

  9. Red got a take down in the first on a double leg. But then he tried three inside singles. First time Eierman used it to try and tie up a cradle, stalemate. Second time Eierman gets the cradle and almost to pin before Red is able to wiggle out, 4 points for Eierman. Third time Eierman works for the cradle and gets behind instead, 2 more for Eierman. I stick with my original statement. If you can get Red to avoid attempting the inside single against the guy who invites the inside single so he can cradle you up, then that would go a long way toward Red pulling the upset. If he keeps shooting that inside single on Eierman I just don't see how he can win.

  12. Buying the event and watching the matches is what it takes to fully grasp a kids talent... I'll just tell you this, you don't win or place high in this tournament if you're not a stud... You'll know plenty of these guys come next year when the rankings come out and at the season starts.

  15. By Drew Hughes The 2021 NAIA Wrestling National Championships are set to take place March 5-6 in Park City, Kansas. There are 12 Indiana natives that will be competing at this tournament with 5 of the 11 being ranked in the top 8 of the latest NAIA rankings. Listed below are the NAIA National qualifiers. Name School Hometown/High School Weight Ranking Ty Haskins Marian (Ind.) Valparaiso, Portage High School 125 19th Matt Gimson Indiana Tech Elkhart, Jimtown High School 133 2nd Connor Gimson Indiana Tech Elkhart, Jimtown High School 133 7th Blake Mulkey Marian (Ind.) Indianapolis, Lawrence Central High School 285 8th For those that may be unfamiliar with how NAIA works, a team can enter 2 individuals at a weight for 2 different weight classes. With that being said, that is how brothers Matt and Connor Grimson both qualified at the same weight and took 1st and 2nd at their conference. Also winning conference titles where Blake Mulkey, Brice Coleman, Elliot Rodgers, Kolby Ferris, Jack Servies, and Jarod Swank. With the exception of Jarod Swank, who competed in the Mid-South Conference, all of the other Indiana Natives competed in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. This was the first year of this conference where Indiana Tech beat Marian in the team race by a score of 163.5 to 144. With in person attendance likely limited, the tournament will be on trackwrestling where you can follow the brackets and even watch live for a fee. 16. Yes, I believe so. I know mine is nice but it definitely doesn't have any diamonds in it. If a school is paying for championship rings with that many diamonds they should be using that to recruit, lol.

  17. Here are some examples that show the significant difference in the make up of some of our sectionals. There are many more examples. Just picked a few that were handy. I gave each of these a "class rank". The concept of Class Rank is to rate the difficulty level of each sectional based on school size. 4 points for a 4A school, 3 points for a 3A school, 2 points for a 2A school, 1 point for a 1A school. Some sectionals have Double the class rank of others. Sectionals in Indiana with significant 4A/3A presence: 25. Avon (11) | class rank 28 Avon, 4A Ben Davis, 4A Brownsburg, 4A Pike, 4A Plainfield, 3A Speedway, 2A Danville Community, 2A Greencastle, 2A North Putnam, 1A South Putnam, 1A Tri-West Hendricks, 1A 22. Warren (10) |class rank 23 Warren Central, 4A Franklin Central, 4A Greenfield-Central, 3A New Palestine, 3A Shelbyville, 3A Indianapolis Howe Academy, 2A Indianapolis Lutheran, 1A Scecina Memorial, 1A Triton Central, 1A Eastern Hancock, 1A 26. Mooresville (10) | class rank 26 Center Grove, 4A Decatur Central, 3A Franklin Community, 3A Greenwood Community, 3A Martinsville, 3A Mooresville, 3A Whiteland Community, 3A Monrovia, 2A Cascade, 1A Cloverdale, 1A Sectionals in Indiana with significant 1A/2A presence: 13. Peru (10) | class rank 12 Maconaquah, 2A Peru, 2A Cass, 1A Caston, 1A? Manchester, 1A. Team State North Miami, 1A Northfield, 1A? Rochester Community, 1A Southwood, 1A Wabash, 1A. Team State Not a perfect system as school size is only one factor. Culture, coaching, school commitment to the sport are all significant factors as well. But school size is a controllable factory when trying to establish balanced sectionals. 23. Tri (10) | class rank 13 Richmond, 3A New Castle, 2A. Team State Blue River Valley, 1A Cambridge City Lincoln, 1A Centerville, 1A. Team State Hagerstown, 1A Knightstown, 1A Northeastern, 1A Shenandoah, 1A Tri, 1A 15. Jay County (9) | class rank 12 Bellmont, 2A. Team State Jay County, 2A Norwell, 2A. Team State Adams Central, 1A. Team State Blackford, 1A Bluffton, 1A. Team State South Adams, 1A, Team State Southern Wells, 1A Union City 1A

  19. Bradbury vs Ramos happened 13 times in a two year period with the last one being in the state finals. Bradbury was 0-13 vs Ramos....and we thought we were going to beat him every time. I think Bradbury was winning in the third period 5 or 6 times in their 13 match rivalry.

  20. Billy naegles headlock was the truth. I remember going to junior duals with him. It was the only move he would do, but he would hit it. There was one match that score ended up something like 31-28 or something absurd as they both kept throwing each other.

He's got to finish up on the feet and change off to his double.. Eierman loves baiting ppl into taking that leg and trying to crack him down and get in funky scrambles on the mat.. With Eierman and Yianni you'll never finish singles down on the mat to have lift and get to your double up on the feet imho.

    Biggest Rivalries

215 behemoths Jeremy Motl of New Castle vs Scott Gross Shenandoah, they had half dozen wars that went back and forth every weekend.. This crazy rivalry lead to the infamous Sectional brawl in 97 when the entire building broke out into a tussle and they had to clear the gym and only allow the parents of each kid and coaches in the gym to finish the match..Motl went on to place 7th and become a 2x placer and Gross would finish runner up and lose both his trips to MSA to Talamantes! Motl was and still is a guy that nobody messes with lol He went on to win the AMATEUR HW MMA national title submitting all 4 guys as a young stud prospect and eventually had a successful professional fighting career.. Dear friend of mine and we are both now tree trimmers now, just a couple meatheads that still love the sport.

  27. Soooo... your screen name is like one of those opposite nick name deals??? Like calling a big guy tiny or a tall guy shortdog. I come to this conclusion that you are not a “wrestlewatcher”... because there was some of the best freshman and sophomores in the state there. Take a look in trackwresting... most of the top few guys are very good wrestlers. But .. checking out track wrestling will give you an idea of who is who.

  28. I stand corrected though, with the new list. Maxwell Lindsey from Ben Davis is the new #1 with a 4.91 GPA. Dylan follows with a 4.8! Still amazing and congratulations to both wrestlers.

  32. I'm going to make a very bold prediction and say that it will be an all Hoosier final at 141 with Lee over Red 9-6. And call me overly optimistic, but I also think we will have 2 Hoosier champs in Lee and Parris.
