  1. Congratulations to Valpo's Luke Reid, who won his division's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship today. Luke, who wrestled in the State Finals this season, works extremely hard every day in the wrestling room and is an even better teammate and person. I am so proud of you Luke. Coach Plesac

  2. I'm not pumping anything. We took 16 wrestlers to Virginia Beach and our off-season will be on point. I have 7 returning Seniors who all have Varsity experience and are at the least Semi-State level kids and they all have real ticket round potential wins in my opinion. I have been coaching them all since before Middle School. If you add Jordan Raines and Ian Hutchinson we got something special, we also have a few knocking the door behind all my kids that may be starters. On top of that, we fill those 106 and 113 holes we had last year with great freshmen coming in that will be immediate impacts. Remember these names Drew Heisler, Camden Raypole, Callen Olry, and John Bair, if you don't hear about them this coming year you will before it is all said and done. They also have a supporting group of incoming freshman around them that wrestling is a priority. As far as transfers go, out of all those schools Homestead and Leo have never had a transfer so not sure what you talking about there. We do have a wrestler who has always lived in our district have reasons outside of wrestling that is now on our roster and he will be a big impact. Yes, we had a very bad day at Regionals last year. That isn't happening again on my watch. All of those schools I help train their wrestlers and I love doing it, and you left East Noble off the list of top schools that are putting the work in. This has all been working in the background and great things are coming for our area for sure. My plan is for Homestead to be a big part of it and help lead the way. Call me arrogant or whatever you want but I know I put the work in. I'm on the ground in the grind every single day and I have been for the past 3 years. I took a job at the school system to get closer to the program. I'm tired of being downplayed. I absolutely can't wait till next year. #260 is here and it is only going to get better.

  15. That's a pretty glass half empty outlook on a pretty good weekend. We have been behind numbers wise from Illinois and Ohio forever and that doesnt resolve overnight. It's my understanding that every one of those names listed above have individually qualified for Fargo, meaning that if they were top 3 at ISWA, that spot is now freed up to allow MORE Indiana wrestlers a chance to gain experience in a great Fargo environment. I would say it will take some improved communication from the state level and hopefully some statewide encouragement to sign kids up for the spots...but that list of names from this weekend all showed up and put in work that we should celebrate and build off of. Congrats to not only those who placed, but all who competed, keep putting in the work!!

    Nick Lee

It's been confirmed that Nick is still competing in freestyle. Everything I have heard from Penn State guys is they think he's going to be a superstar as a coach. I wouldn't mind him coming back to Indiana and taking over for Ersland someday at Purdue.

  17. Indiana finishes off their great run with a solid 3rd place finish over Iowa. California ran through Pennsylvania to win. Indiana was the only team in the event to be within 10 points of the Cali squad. I didn’t dig into the competition level, but would assume some guys on our team faces a few nationally ranked opponents during this event. Top individual results were: Case Bridge 6-1, Case Bell 7-1, Jenson Boyd 8-0, Clinton Shepherd 7-1, Thomas Gibbs 7-1, MJ Staples 7-1, and Lucas Boe 7-1.

  21. Per what I know about his school, they have a "Wall of Fame" where they put up "All-State" athletes and only have wrestling state champions. So if somehow it was recognized officially more wrestlers would be on the wall.
    3 points
  22. But why does it matter? It's just an additional label to our state champions and/or placers, which already is the highest distinction we have. All state is just adding words to guys we have already determined are best in the state.

  23. I always looked at All-State as a way to recognize outstanding individual performances within the parameters of a team sport. For individual sports however I figured it was basically implied that the state medalists would be the equivalent of an All-State honor.

  31. Christian Carroll to Iowa State. Says it's his "final destination" so we'll see how that works out. So far he has committed to Illinois and Penn (forgot about that one) took a redshirt year at Oklahoma State, and now is wrestling for Iowa State. This is on top of stints at Penn, Prairie Heights, and Jimtown in high school. I hope this works out and he becomes an AA/national champ there, but I think the kid still needs to figure stuff out.

  37. Well clearly the Hollywood Blondes are dropping a double atomic elbow on one of the Four Horsemen.

  38. While this is clearly true. It is still a much better way of determining who the top athletes in the state are verses merely being selected by coaches & AD's. As the football, baseball & basketball All-State players are. Every year, 8 wrestlers in each weight are officially recognized by the IHSAA by receiving medals. Those clearly are your "All-State" wrestlers in the eyes of the IHSAA. Now if individual schools want to celebrate others athletes that meet some alternate criteria (such as State Qualifier) by putting them on their "Wall of Fame", then so be it. There should be nothing that stops a school from setting their own criteria for such recognition.

  39. Does swimming and track have some official document from their coaches association to acknowledge all-state athletes? I'd be asking your AD to furnish the documentation where those sports are claiming all-state to see how they justify it and not just his word. Basically those sports are all saying anyone that receives a medal is all-state, which would equate to wrestling state placers as being recognized in the same way as they receive a medal.

  40. I mean, if you want to get into semantics just call the top 8 placers All State.

    Nick Lee

Good for Nick. I would be surprised if Nick didn't continue to compete through the next Olympic cycle. But I have no inside scoop, it just seems to make sense. With any luck when he does retire from competition, he will come back to Indiana to coach/develop future Indiana talent and bring with him a wealth of insight from the Sanderson coaching tree.
