  5. Lots and lots of boos for Burroughs, but he wrestled incredibly well and intelligently. Soundly beats Mesenbrink. Burroughs prods Mesenbrink and the crowd booed him lustily. It was chippy on both ends and Burroughs had a great strategy. These people are nuts if they think Burrtoughs won for any other reason than being a much better, complete wrestler than the very, very young and less experienced Mesenbrink. Pretty weak in my opinion. You don't boo Michael Jordan and you don't boo Jordan Burroughs, again in my humble opinion. Nolf all over upstart Jacques 9-2.

  7. Big changes are coming to high school wrestling this season. Over the past ten years the collegiate folkstyle rules have become almost a different sport with out of bound stalling, what determines out of bounds, and this past year the three point takedown. While many were clamoring for the college out of bounds rules with only one supporting point determining being in bounds it was repeatedly shot down by the NFHS due to mat and gym size concerns. This year though, the NFHS has decided that it is time to implement the one supporting point criteria for high school wrestling. While making the wrestling area a little bigger this rule will make it easier for referees to focus on the action instead of checking for the proper amount of supporting points of the wrestlers. On top of that change the NFHS has approved the popular three-point takedown. This year at the NCAA level they went to a three-point takedown. Many people were cautious, but also excited about that big change. After the NCAA season concluded many felt that the three-point takedown was a huge success. If these two big changes aren’t enough for you, the NFHS has also aligned with the NCAA level with adding a four-point nearfall. After four seconds on your back the offensive wrestler will now be awarded four points instead of taking five seconds to earn only three points. This was implemented in the NCAA since 2015 and last year they updated the rule to allow two points for two seconds, three points for three seconds, and four points for four seconds or more. The NFHS will follow the NCAA and implement all three scenarios for nearfall. Other rule changes include a clarification of the Technical Fall criteria and not requiring a 10-foot circle on the wrestling mat. Here is the NFHS article on the changes https://www.nfhs.org/articles/participants-now-inbounds-with-one-point-of-contact-in-high-school-wrestling/ NFHS Article.pdf View full article

  8. I have Parris as the GOAT even if he doesn't medal (which would be a huge upset if he doesn't come home with a medal). 3x state champ, 1 loss in HS NCAA champ, Hodge winner Age group world champ Sr world medalist US Olympian Sarah Hildebrant is the women's GOAT without a doubt. But Parris is the overall GOAT at the moment. And I do suspect that Jesse Mendez's final resume will place him above Parris when its all said and done.

  9. I'm stepping out until the evening session. It appears that Mendez' quarters match again Yianni is taking place this evening. Great job thus far by our Indiana men and women. Mendez, Lee, Parris, Hildebrandt and Miracle all still alive and working for the all-important Olympic berths. Carroll lost 1-1 to Cox and was absolutely in that match until the bitter end. Great showing by him and he is getting better and better all the time. Boyd, Carroll, Nate Jackson still alive in wrestlebacks. Great action and can't wait for tonight's all-star matches at every weight. Bye for now.

  12. Wrestlers from all over will converge upon State College, Pennsylvania Friday and Saturday for one of 18 coveted spots on the Olympic team. Seven wrestlers with Indiana ties will look to call themselves Olympians after the dust settles on Saturday evening. Men's Freestyle At 65kg there are two entries from Indiana in Nick Lee and Jesse Mendez. Lee is coming in as the top seed, while Mendez is the 11th seed. This weight is not qualified for the Olympics yet, so the winner here will go to Turkey with hopes of getting a qualifying spot. Lee won the spot last year and wrestled at Worlds, but did not qualify the spot. He potentially see Penn State teammate Beau Bartlett or 2023 NCAA champ Andrew Alirez to make the best of three finals. Moving up to 97kg we will see Christian Carroll attempt to make the team. He qualified at the Last Chance Qualifier a couple weeks ago and slots in as the 9th seed. He will have Iowa's Anthony Cassioppi in the first round with the winner getting former Olympic medalist J'den Cox in the quarters. At heavyweight Mason Parris will sit out until the finals on Saturday. He will away the challenge tournament winner in a best of three series due to winning a bronze medal at last year's world championships. It will be very fitting to see Parris in Paris this summer. Women's Freestyle Three wrestlers will look to earn spots on the team in Women's Freestyle. All of the women's weights are qualified for the Olympics which means winning here will get you a trip to Paris. At 50kg the Queen of Granger Sarah Hildebrandt will be sitting out until Saturday's best of three finals. She has medaled multiple times on the world stage and looks to make her second Olympic team. Kayla Miracle will be in the best of three series at 62kg awaiting the winner of the challenge tournament. She was an Olympian in 2021 and qualified the weight again for the Olympics at the Pan Am qualifier. Lastly, Yorktown's Alara Boyd will look to earn a spot at 68kg. She comes in as the 5th seed in the challenge tournament. She has multiple world medals and will be a threat to make the best of three series against Amit Elor. 13. I believe you are correct if Mendez continues tracking on his current path. 4X HS State Champ, NCAA Champ as a true sophomore & competed very well on the senior level at the latest Olympic Trials beating McKenna, Green & Diakomihalis then only losing to Retherford 3-2. Very impressive for someone who is only 20 or 21 years old.

    WOW Amazing guy!

Thanks guys. I very much appreciate the support I’ve gotten from the Brownsburg wrestling community, and the Central Indiana wrestling community as a whole. I’m firmly convinced that being involved in this great sport has been a key factor in my fight. “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.” -Dan Gable I don’t know about easy, but it definitely helped!

  25. It should help everyone lean into their offensive strengths. The "best on their feet" wrestler can now use take down/let up even more successfully. The "has a hard time with take downs, but can really ride" wrestler can now really take advantage of choice between periods. From what we've seen in college, this should really open up what high school wrestlers are willing to risk to score points.

  27. He's not a huge medal favorite. He'll come in as the 4th best guy and capable of beating anyone--but if brackets work out with him on the same side as 2 of the Big 3, he has to get an upset to medal. AMENDMENT: I just researched and saw that ranking points should be locked in with Mason and the Big 3 as the 4 seeds. That will mean he can medal without beating one of them and that he's a clear medal favorite. I disagree that a loss would be a "huge" upset because the rise of new, young monsters, along with upsets by savvy vets, are commonplace internationally--but him not medalling would be an upset if the draws hold.

  42. Like Matt said, I figured OSU had a succession plan with Coleman Scott, who really elevated North Carolina during his tenure there. Those are some massive shoes to fill for Scott. Smith has always been one of my favorite figures in NCAA wrestling and I will miss his scowls matside. He often has a big presence at World Team and Olympic Team Trials and I'm sure this week will be no different.
