  1. All about the different levels and goals. As some kids skill levels will never get them to state and making semi state might be the highest they will reach. Some not being on top of the podium will feel like they failed to achieve their ultimate goal…and so on

  2. Planning on doing a write-up for this tournament. Competed three years here and it was always a lot of fun. Super tough competition for anybody.

  3. Most schools in Indiana seem to celebrate their school’s team(s) or athletes advancing to the Semi-State round depending upon the sport that has it (ex.: Swimming & Diving only have Sectionals, Sectional Finals, and State; Track & Field have Sectional, Regionals, and State), but in wrestling it seems like a minor accomplishment in the overall picture. With the way Indiana’s wrestling tournament is set up and how deadly some ticket rounds can be, it’s not uncommon for a lot of good wrestlers to be stopped at the third stage of the tournament series. Even so, I feel like Semi-State should maybe be considered a pretty big achievement in Indiana as most states in the U.S. have the luxury of full consolation rounds and less qualifying stages.

  4. Delta 1981 Lineup and Stats Team Record: 8-0 IHSAA State Champions IHSAA Semi State Champions IHSAA Regional Champions IHSAA Sectional Champions (Set largest margin victory at state tournament that held for almost 40 years) *With only 13 wrestlers in a lineup and only placing Top 4* Lineup (only had 13 Weight classes) 98: David Irving (10th) - Semi State Qualifier - (21-6 record) (got 4th his junior year and got 2nd his senior year and went on to wrestle at IU) 105: Brad Kennedy (11th)- Semi State Qualifier (got 3rd his senior year and went on to wrestle at Uindy) 112: Chris Ruble (12th) - IHSAA 4th Place - (25-7 record) 119: Doug Campbell (12th) - IHSAA State Qualifier (24-4 record) (was also a state qualifier as a sophomore) 126: Chris Campbell (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (30-0 record) (3rd as soph. and 2nd as junior) 132: Don Heintzelman (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (16-2 record) (went on to wrestle at Notre Dame) 138: David Locke (9th) - Semi State Qualifier - (21-7 record) (rest of career speaks for itself) 145: Jeff Cox (11th) - Regional Qualifier (9-3 record) 155: Greg Gadbury (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (32-0 record) (3rd place as a junior) 167: David Palmer (11th) - IHSAA State Champ - (29-0) (2nd as freshman, 1st as Sophomore, and 1st as senior) Went on to wrestle at Oklahoma and was one of the best if not the best wrestlers to ever come through Indiana I could go on and on with accolades 189: Steve Stewart (12th) HWT: John Good (12th) (was a state qualifier as a junior) By the words of David Locke... this was the best team that Delta had in their dominating run in the 80s and there were some really good teams that followed. Guys that couldn't fit in lineup because they were behind state champs and the next year after they graduated they either won state themselves or were state placers. Example: John Ginther (wrestled varsity all year then lost to State Champ Heintzelman in wrestle off right before sectionals) Ginther went on to go 4th-1st-1st. They tried to dual St, Paris Graham who was ranked #1 in country at time, but they didn't want to... finally convinced them to a few years later and beat them. Years following this team they were ranked in the Top 5 in the country (and this team had 7 seniors in the lineup.

  5. Truly state placement is probably most people's realistic goals. As we all know that's not easy, I believe there are a lot of dedicated wrestlers that don't make it out of SS. I believe it is an accomplishment. Opinions may vary.

  10. Bubba was only 17 and we didn't even get to see him healthy, or training like he should've.. It's unreal how good he was and knowing what I know, trying not to be a Debbie downer on a public forum.. Breaks my heart knowing that not only did he pass away in a terrible fashion, but all the wasted talent and hearts he broke in doing so, being a reminder how precious life is, especially when 1 mistake can be 1 that you never come back from... Bubba was his own worst enemy and that's the reason he's no longer with us as are most kids that e bone head mistakes. Def was tough on the wrestling family/town .. Only to lose another really member, leaving the family and town gutted 8 years later losing my other cousin to similar circumstances.. The bubba that pinned his way through state finals, a week after having a fever of 102, cutting to make the HW LIMIT and being a man child, it boggles my mind that he did the extraordinary things he did under The circumstances.. He was def loved and cared for by our big Wrestling family, and this isn't a pity party excuse post, this is to put into perspective how dominant he was, and was not living right. Wish I could find that 95 state finals, Peck has it some where, I'm going to go do some tree work for him within the next few weeks and will try and see if we can find it, amomg his world class Vhs/DVD wrestling collection.. Anybody that is familiar with Bub, regardless where they're from, will vouch he was a Treat to watch, and not like many other big men.

  13. fun fact: The 2013 PM team… the Ihsaa did not score the first round at the state tournament that year. This was the first year going back to the individual tournament to determine the team state champion. They would have scored 14 more points for their 7 Friday night wins, plus whatever bonus they earned in those 7 matches. So, that team technically was the record holder for most points scored until the 2022 CP team blew it out of the water. Most Points Scored 178 Crown Point, 2022 112 Evansville Mater Dei, 2021 109.5 Warren Central, 2016 108 Indianapolis Cathedral, 2018 105 Brownsburg, 2022 102.5 Perry Meridian, 2013 102 Indianapolis Cathedral, 2020 A lot of great wrestling teams and awesome wrestlers have taken the mat over the years in Indiana. It’s a very hard tournament to win, especially under the IHSAA format. Comparing teams and eras is impossible, but that’s what makes it fun to think about. The duals tournament was awesome, but it had its challenges - making weight during the middle of the week, wrestling a lot during the postseason, it was not seeded so some areas had tougher paths than others. The individual tournament is awesome too, but it has its challenges - no wrestlebacks, luck of the draw, and some programs have tougher paths than others to get their guys downtown and on the podium. We have made much improvement with the classed duals tournament, the new travel rules, and our individual tournament is still the greatest spectacle in high school sport. When I was coaching at Roncalli during Covid I spent a lot of time on finding accurate statistics and researching information on the history of the program… What isn’t talked about enough is how hard our state tournament used to be and how difficult it was to win back in the 60s, 70s, 80s… we took less athletes from each round of the state tournament and medaled less wrestlers. Some years there was even like a repechage format at state. Crazy stuff.

  15. Hammond High had 4 champs each year from 1935 to 1938 and had six finalists for 1936 and 1937. They also had three champs in 1934, and a champ and two runners-up in 1933. Pro wrestling forefather Dory Funk Sr. won back to back titles during this time. https://www.ihsaa.org/sites/default/files/documents/Wrestling Records Book_0.pdf

  16. By STEVE KRAH stvkrh905@gmail.com Munster High School wrestlers are taught about the 5 P’s — Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. “If you properly prepare for your stuff, you won’t be as nervous,” says Mustangs junior mat standout Chris Bohn. “You won’t perform badly.” Bohn, 17, began wrestling as a second grader with Griffith Wrestling Club. He moved from Griffith to Munster in sixth grade. Prior to high school, he got much of his training with Region Wrestling Academy. Bohn is currently 82-6 for his career and 13-3 for 2022-23 at 138 pounds. He was 42-2 and a and IHSAA State Finals qualifier at 120 in 2021-22. As a freshman in 2020-21, he went 27-1 and qualified for semistate. From all the time in the circle, Bohn knows many moves. “I’ve got a decent-sized arsenal,” says Bohn. “I know a good amount of technique. “I focus on a few things.” Going from 120 to 138, Bohn knows he is meeting opponents this season who are stronger. “I rely on speed a lot at 138,” says Bohn, who stands about 5-foot-10. Fourth-year head coach Zach Slosser sees a fierce competitor and a smart athlete in Bohn. “He wants to wrestle competition,” says Slosser. “He’s not going to run away from anybody. “What makes him a good wrestler is his knowledge of the sport. He’s very knowledgable about positioning and all those fine details. He uses technique over strength. He’s a very smart kid.” Bohn is carrying a weighted grade-point average above 3.6 and counts Advanced Placement Computer Science as his current favorite class. “I’m good with computers,” says Bohn, who can see himself studying software engineering in college and would like to wrestle at the next level. With 40 grapplers on the team, the Mustangs head into the post-Christmas part of their schedule at 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Crossroads Conference. “The team aspect (of wrestling) is very important because you need your teammates to help you, work out with you, motivate you and push you in practices,” says Bohn. “You can also have people hang out with and relate with. “It’s an individual sport because you’re the only one (on the mat), but the team is a big part of it.” Bohn’s primary drill partners are junior Joey Bartusiak (145) and senior Ezekiel Gomez (132). “Joey’s fast and he’s a pretty hard worker,” says Bohn. “He doesn’t give up. “Zeke is solid with technique. It’s usually a battle when we wrestle.” Munster makes its first appearances in the Mooresville Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29. “We plan to make some statements there and get some matches for everyone,” says Bohn. His support system includes parents Christopher Sr., and Angelic. During a tournament, Bohn spends time between his matches rooting for teammates and he also studies film. His father — a former high school wrestler — shoots video of all his son’s matches. “I’ll watch my last match to see what I’ve done well, what’ve I’ve done wrong, what I can do better,” says Bohn. While there is plenty of noise in the gym or arena and the headgear doesn’t make it any easier, Bohn manages to hear his coaches offering instruction from the corner. “I know what they sound like,” says Bohn. Munster has an NCC away dual against Lowell Jan. 5, the Lake County Tournament at Hanover Central Jan. 7, an NCC home dual against Hobart Jan. 7 and the NCC meet (with Andrean, Highland, Hobart, Kankakee Valley and Lowell) at Lowell Jan. 14. The state tournament series includes the East Chicago Sectional (with East Chicago Central, Gary West Side, Hammond Bishop Noll, Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Merrillville and Whiting) Jan. 28, Hobart Regional Feb. 4, East Chicago Semistate Feb. 11 and IHSAA State Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Feb. 17-18. Moving through the Region at tournament time is tough. “It’s hard competition no matter what,” says Slosser. “You’ve always got to be on your game.” Slosser, who was an assistant to Mike Crary for four years before becoming head wrestling coach, also coaches football and is an administrative assistant in the Munster athletic office. He has worked hard to recruit athletes for high school, middle school and the Munster Wrestling Club. “I’ve been working hard to try to make a program,” says Slosser. “Two years ago K through 12, we had 47 kids in the program. Now K through 12, we have 126. “There were seven middle school wrestlers two years ago and that number has jumped to 45.” Says Bohn, “It’s not me, but in the time I’ve been here I’ve seen the program grow a lot and it’s cool to see.” A wrestling club was started at Munster when Slosser was 6, but it went away. “I said you know what? — this program needs to keep back up and running,” says Slosser, 27. “We’re just a young program fighting to get back.” Munster has won 11 sectional titles in program history. The last four came in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 when former Evansville Mater Dei wrestler Dan Gelarden was Mustangs head coach. “(Gelarden) was a very intelligent coach,” says Slosser. “We had (the IHSAA team tournament) back then and he knew how to move the lineup the right way.” Slosser dealt with injuries throughout his prep mat career and was a semistate qualifier as a junior. He earned a Business Management degree from Calumet College of Saint Joseph’s in Whiting, Ind., in 2018. Slosser’s coaching staff features two of his former coaches — Tim Maldonado and Bobby Joe Maldonado — plus Jeff Jorge, Steve Marks and Matt Gille. The middle school season was in the fall. That team was coached by Juan Lopez, Bobby Joe Maldonado and Markus Ciciora. Those men also help out at the high school level. Slosser is pleased to see former Munster wrestlers who are now parents getting involved with the current Mustangs. Bohn credits nutrition as a big part of his success. He estimates he takes in about 2,500 calories a day and burns off at least that many. “I eat a lot of raspberries,” says Bohn. “I love raspberries. You can eat less calories and feel more energized. You just won’t feel like crap when you’re in your match. “Normally I’m good about (eating) unless it’s a holiday. I don’t cut. I’m going eat good food. It would be rude not to, but that’s the only time I stray away from good nutrition.”

  18. Who is the the fastest Head Coach to 50 or 100 coaching wins. I hit 50 this week and it got me wondering how fast some other coaches were able to get there. From a little research on the coaches page it's looking like these coaches may be the 10 fastest to 50 Wins as a Head Coach. I am 50-7 and did it in less than 2 seasons, but more so was looking for any coach to hit 50 in under 60 duals wrestled considering some coaches back in the day couldn't wrestle nearly as many duals as we can now! Ed Pendowski Portage John Smith Muncie SouthSide John Henry Harrison WL Kevin Blundell Monrovia Mark Hidalago River Forest Mike Goebel Evansville Mater Dei Ray Black Jr. Madison Terry O'Niel Westfield Tim Klingensmith Jay Couty Quinn Harris Cascade Also as I was looking I came across the infamous Rex Peckinpaugh 1000-300-3 MANNNNN! 40 years and 1303 dual meets coached, thats a number to chase for sure! Is anyone able to confirm these or maybe tell me if I am wrong on this list? I didn't look too hard to see who got to 100 first or how fast, was hoping I could get some help from the board, but it did look like Ed Pendowski may have been the fastest to 100!

  19. You guys are doing big things at Cascade! I cant imagine it will take too long to hit 100 : ) I hit 100 this season in our first tournament. My first year we only had a handful of kids so we only won 4 duals. This is my 7th season as Head Coach. Coach Kuhn Faith Christian Wrestling
