    Team State 2023

There are ways to word an argument and then there are ways to argue aimlessly so much of this has been beaten to death through so many threads with so many good posts by the involved parties detailing why decisions were made. I do not have the time or energy to explain why we’ve made the changes we’ve made. we used to have 36 teams, then we split 3A into two and now we have 40 teams. And now that’s not enough.

    Team State 2023

Mr Buttler, This is how the divisions progressed as I remember it. When this started there were only three divisions: 1A,2A and 3A. At time all three divisions had around 100 teams each, evenly split. The quantity of teams that qualified for team state were 12 each division. The schools that are now currently in 4A including EMD and Cathedral were for most part taking up all of the qualification spots. There was a gap observed that made it really difficult for many teams in 3A to be able to qualify so 4A was created to allow that slot size of school to have a chance to qualify. At this time, it was decided since it was a split out of 3A to have 8 teams in the new 4A and 8 teams in 3A to qualify actually creating 4 more available qualifying spots for a total of 16 for teams that were previously in the old 3A. I hope that helps you understand where we are today and why things are the way they are.

That argument will keep being confusing to people since there is already 25% of 4A taken and only 12.5% of the other three classes. You get special privileges as it is because we all acknowledge that almost every one of the 10 best duals teams overall will be in 4A. And even if Cathedral and EMD weren't involved, 6 of the 32 remaining is still 19%--higher chances than any other class. It's a sad reality of our severely limited system that the lower enrollment schools in all 4 classes qualify much less than the ones at the top of their division--no matter where the lines are drawn. Until we have an all-in model, people at the edges of qualification scoring or the edges of classification numbers will feel frustrated.

The BCS model used for team state selection criteria is antiquated, it's time to catch up to modern times and send the IndianaMat staff to Grapevine Texas every Tuesday between Thanksgiving and Christmas and lock us into a room and we will release our IM rankings to determine team state weekly.

    OSU Buckeyes 22-23

Posted this in August on nhs67 post. Just thought I'd move it over here. Ohio State University-OSU 125 Maik Heinsleman - SR, Five year starter. can be a five time NQ. Hope he AA's this season. Been a great Buckeye. AA 125 Brady Koontz - JR, GR focus. 133 Andre Gonzalez - RSFR, I've had him moving down after Malik is finished. Not sure now with the two FR coming in. 23-5 RS season. 133 Bouzakis - RS, He's going to get those five dates and I wouldn't be surprised if he's wrestling at the B1G tourney. NQ 133 Mendez - RS, Hopefully he gets those five dates as well. But he RS's proper. 133 Dylan Koontz - SR, Has stepped in when asked and absorbed some beatings. Hopefully he finds a place in GR. Been a great Buckeye. 141 Dylan D'Emilio - SO, Has wrestled better each season. Two time NQ with a R16. D'Emilio continues to improve. AA within reach. NQ 141 Jordan Decatur - JR, No idea where he falls? Still has RS available. 149 Sammy Sasso - JR, Three time NQ, two time AA (5th & 2nd). I feel like Sasso has been figured out. AA 149 Gavin Brown - RS, Three timer in Ohio(lost COVID year). 120-11. 157 Paddy Gallagher - RSFR, OSU fans have been waiting for him. We've heard he wasn't healthy last season. Had a good RS year 17-2, no big wins and lost to a HS guy (All pretty irrelevant). Wide open weight class. Buckeyes need him to produce. NQ 157 Bryce Hepner - SO, Good wrestler who split time last season. 157 Issac Wilcox - SO, Split time with Hepner last season. 165 Carson Kharchla - SO, Five losses. Griffith, Amine, Hamiti, O'Toole and The Bull by a total of nine points with two SV losses. It gets no easier this season. AA 174 Ethan Smith - SR, Possible five time NQ. R16, 5th, R12. Disappointing NCAA last season. Lost to Eischens in R1 by a point(WTF) and then to Plott in R12. I'll leave out the Ethan Smith joke knowing that nhs gets it. Been a great Buckeye. AA 184 Kaleb Romero - SR, Three time NQ, R12, 6th. Lost to Hidlay by a point. He has improved every season. I expect the same. Been a great Buckeye. AA 184 Gavin Bell - SO, He'll get some matches. 12-5 last season in the Open circuit. 184 Luke Geoge - RS, He's going to be good one. Would like to see him get those five dates this season. Wrestled at STED. Looking forward to this kid. 197 Gavin Hoffman - JR, Twenty one seed all the way to the Semifinals last season, then did the slide. Finished 6th place and surprised everyone. AA 197 Seth Shumate - RS, Buckeye fans were pretty excited about him a couple seasons ago. Local kid. Three-time DI State champion. 170-5 record. #19 overall recruit. 285 Tate Orndorrf - SR, Possible five time NQ. R16, 8th, R12. He's been serviceable. Not a world beater and 285 in the NCAA isn't a friendly place. AA 285 Nick Feldman - RS, He can only benefit from a RS. I hope he gets to wrestle in the five dates provided. He needs to get bigger, but his frame will dictate that and his frame is pretty damn stout. Parris, Hilger and Laird will be gone. Cass, Slavikouski and Davison will be SR's. Schultz, Kerk, Elam, Hendrickson, Fernandes and Luffman will all be around for a couple more years at least. I believe Feldman is going to be a great college 285. I'm not hanging any FS chains around him anytime soon and I'm not bothered by that. I don't know if OSU gets a trophy this season. We return every starting wrestler. Ohio State is thin at 49/65/74. And we need 25/33 to work out for the Buckeyes to make a run in the future. It's going to be exciting to be able to watch the RS's wrestle this year outside of the 'Open' circuit. That's all I got boys. EDIT: 133 Mendez will be in the wrestle offs tomorrow against D. Koontz. Wrestlestat shows Mendez as the starter and Bouzakis RS'ing. I thought it would be the other way around and I suppose it still may.

I'm just saying, you are making a ton of awful points just to want 12 teams in each class. You're throwing a lot of talking points out that don't help you're argument. Bruce gave the perfect example of how the numbers break down. Sorry your class is harder because Cathedral and Mater Dei bump up. But that's always been the spirit of team state. Obviously, they would dominate every match if they both stayed in their own class, but that's not the point. The point is to get the big schools/heavy hitters battling it out themselves and giving the small schools a shot in the spotlight. Sorry that made it tougher on Whiteland. Also, it does suck not being in team state already. All we can do now is prepare our kids and beef up our schedule, which we have done. And I'm beyond excited to see what our squad can do to get that last vote-in spot.

Holy cow dude give it a rest. Arguing to take teams away from team state, in a division you aren’t in, is a wild hill to die on. The whole point of team state is to give smaller schools a chance to shine in a single class system.

Wonder how he'd fair at U23s. Gaemshahr didn't use Ghasempour, Lil Yaz or Nokhodi but they still would have lost. Takestan have managed to sign the second best guy in every weight, they should be the favourites to win this whole thing.

I think the closest D1 school to you would be Gardner-Webb which seems to be like a 4 hour drive. That team also has some Indiana connections with Andrew Wilson and former Indiana wrestler Tyson Lane.

OSU is going to be a really exciting team. Based on the talent you listed, they should be right up there competing with the perennial top dogs, Penn State and Iowa The wildcard in all this may be the NIL transfers and how the use of one-year starters evolves. Could we potentially see a "super team" ala the NBA in the next 10 years to someone with really deep pockets?

4 spots were created. I am going to do some calculating but I am speculating that Whitleland has a better chance to qualify in this format than the old 3 division format.

Also you have to factor in the size of the players in football. If you put 2A MD up against WC or Penn you would see a VAST size difference among players. Wrestling is a different animal, same size contestants. Also if you put MD where they align in the wrestling team state there will be no contest. I don't make the decisions coach Schaefer would be the one to make the decisions but why would MD spend the time there when they could go find better competition somewhere else? I think a better option would be to have an Open Class. Then have the designated size schools in their classes. That is if MD no longer had the option to move up.

  23. In the other IHSAA sports such as Football and Volleyball there is also a success factor that moves teams up into the next class, I believe if they win state twice in a row they move up. Providence High School's Volleyball team is an example of this and it may have also happened Columbus East Football.

I just don't see how having 12 teams in each division is bad? So 1A cares that 4A has the same amount of teams competing? Also Indiana Football has a reclassification every 2 year. They have 7 divisions and do this. Wrestling has 4. For a sport that struggles to keep interest why would less wrestling be better? Specifically from the larger schools. 1----All CLASSES SHOULD HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF REPRESENTATIVES! And so my argument here is WHY with less spots available are smaller school bumping up and taking away from the bigger schools spots ? I understand that they want to compete, so do the bigger schools. 2----12 teams per class, again this cant hurt anything it allows more wrestling and I am sure more revenue for the host school of the meet. 3---Reclassification at least every other year, not every year. As far a the private schools the should not get to pick where the play what sport. EMD is 4A for wrestling, but 2A for football??? I believe you play in your class size that you actually are. It is silly that the bigger schools are the ones punished because the smaller ones play up. If it is okay to move up it should be okay to move down. I am sure the 2A teams would love a crack at EMD. Ad other 3A teams a crack at Cathedral. But in fairness you are knocking out 2 other schools that are a certain class size picked by the committee. If they do move up then the team they bump should be able to move down a class and take the spot. My understanding is that you need to have a doctorates in Calculus to figure out the equation from the different Sectionals, Regionals, and Semi state and they are all different?? I keep looking at Moorseville and the amount of just powerhouses that come out of the SEC. & REG is just insane. They knock each other. While there maybe some adjustments to points based on the sectional, it doesn't help when your bumped as the 5 th guy in any of it. In the Moorseville Regional regional alone their are 6 x 4A teams AVON BEN DAVIS Brownsburg Center Grove Pike Whiteland

  27. By Blaze Lowery Indiana consistently produces quality wrestlers that elicit remarkable feats in their collegiate careers. Whether its Division I or NAIA, Indiana is becoming a beacon for successful wrestling programs, especially at the next level. So much of the time, these accomplishments are not recognized: which is why I am here to do so: Without further or due, you NAIA Collegiate 2022-2023 Season Preview. Indiana Tech: Indiana Teach has nine incoming freshmen from Indiana’s 2022 graduating class, the most of any college in Indiana, and not even accounting for the out-of-state recruits. There are eight of 11 national qualifiers returning for another season, and of which are national champions. The Warriors are looking to secure yet another top five finish at the NAIA Championships this season, in addition to winning another WHAC title. 2022 NAIA National Champions: Conner Gimson (133) of Jimtown – NAIA National Champion Gimson won his second national title this past season, making him the first two-time national champion for the Warriors wrestling program. He also secured a 2nd team COSIDA Award for his academic and athletic accomplishments. There are talks of Gimson possibly coming back for his COVID year, but its looking like he will not be continuing his time on the mat. Eric Vermillion (184) – NAIA National Champion (Returning) Vermillion also won his second national title this past season for Tech, becoming the second wrestler in program history to have repeat championships under his belt. As if that was not enough, he also secured the 1st team COSIDA Award, the most prestigious award earned in the NAIA. 2022 NAIA National Qualifiers: Kyle Kantola (141) – 8th Place (Returning) Nathan Orum (125) – National Qualifier (Returning) Matt Gimson (133) of Jimtown– National Qualifier (Returning) Nick Gates (149) – National Qualifier (Returning) Corey Cavanaugh (149) – National Qualifier (Returning) Nate Wheeler (157) – National Qualifier (Returning) Hunter Gasper (174) – National Qualifier Vernon Willis (285) – National Qualifier Braydon Erb (285) of Western– National Qualifier (Returning) Although the numbers did not translate into placement for many of the Warriors at Nationals, I am certain that it will this upcoming season with such a large recruiting class. In other words, Indiana Tech is not rebuilding, it is reloading for an even better post season in 2023. Incoming Freshmen: Braxton Vest (125) of Westfield, Michael Tharpe (125) of Center Grove, Zimani Malomboza (125) of Fort Wayne Northrop, Elijah Anthony (133) of Frankfort, Corbin Walston (149) of Lawrenceburg, Landon Buchanan (165) of Jimtown, Nathan Critchfield (285) of Evansville Mater Dei, Ian Clifford (285) of Columbia City, Ryan Lattimore (285) of Purdue Polytechnic. Out of these nine incoming freshmen, I’m highest on Elijah Anthony. I think Indiana Tech will be a great fit for Anthony with the Gimson brothers departing in the coming year. Another guy to look forward to is Braxton Vest; with a showstopping performance at the state tournament this past season, this kid is a proven gamer. Coach Thomas Pompei is locked in for yet another season of greatness. Marian University: The Knights took advantage of the portal this offseason. Not even mentioning the eight recruits they acquired in the 2022 recruiting class, this team is stacked to say the least. After placing 10th at the NAIA Championship last season, Marian is taking strides to gain a top five finish at this year’s tournament. Recent Transfer List: Alex Cottey of Perry Meridian, Chattanooga University Cottey transfers after a season-ending leg injury that kept him from showing his true potential for the Mocs. He is a two-time Indiana state champion, and two-time runner-up for the falcons of Perry Meridian. His homecoming is a great chance for him to showcase the skills he picked up in Tennessee. Asa Garcia of Avon, Indiana University Garcia was in and out of the lineup for the Hoosiers, but never solidified himself as the guy down in Bloomington. With his little brother, Blaze Garcia of Brownsburg, joining the Knights this offseason, this was an awesome place for him to land coming out of the portal. Garcia was a three-time Indiana state champion and was ranked 9th in the nation his senior year. Head Coach Steven Bradley will have his hands full with these transfers, as he already has eight returning qualifiers from last year’s tournament. 2022 NAIA Nationals Results: Sam Osho (184) of Avon – 3rd place (Returning) Elliot Rodgers (165) of Cathedral – 6th place (Returning) Jack Servies (197) of Perry Meridian– 6th place (Returning) Anthony Hughes (125) of Lawrence North– Qualifier (Returning) Aundre Beatty (141) of Warren Central– Qualifier (Returning) Logan Wagner (141) of Zionsville– Qualifier (Returning) Seth Johnson (149) of North Montgomery- Qualifier (Returning) Bailey Moore (157) of Beech Grove– Qualifier (Returning) Honorable mention goes to Blake Mulkey of Brownsburg, Gardner-Webb transfer, who placed 4th at nationals the year prior, but suffered a season-ending injury that kept him from wrestling last season. In addition to the national qualifiers and incoming transfers, this 2022 freshmen class is also full of hammers. Incoming Freshmen: Landon Bertsch (133,141) of Bluffton, Braden Haines (141) of Brownsburg, Drew Willis (141) of Roncalli, Jude Barger (149) of Franklin Community, Blaze Garcia (149) of Brownsburg, Zach Wilson (149) of Roncalli, Dylan McKelvey (149) of Brownsburg, Liam Begley (285) of Crown Point. I do not see any of these freshmen making a significant impact in the coming season, but I feel like a large majority of them have potential to start in their later years for the Knights. Marian is one of Indiana’s newer collegiate teams in the state and its lineup has only gotten deeper. It is safe to say that the Marian Knights are not only here to stay but are here to play as they enter their 7th season as a program. View full article

    Indiana U. ‘22-‘23

Let's dive into the data a little bit - first, here are the dual meet standings from Big 10 this past season (2021-2022): Penn State 8-0 Iowa 7-1 Michigan 7-1 Wisconsin 6-2 Ohio State 5-3 Michigan State 4-4 Purdue 4-4 Northwestern 4-4 Rutgers 3-5 Nebraska 3-5 Minnesota 3-5 Illinois 1-7 Indiana 1-7 Maryland 0-8 I am going to classify Penn State, Iowa and Michigan as "ELITE". I think Ohio State will join this group in the next year or two based on their recruiting class. These are teams that will only likely lose to each other. Wisconsin was up there with only 2 losses this year but guess what - they didn't wrestle against either Michigan or Penn State. Let's look at losses by the other teams / with losing margin, and discard losses versus the 3 Elite teams: Wisconsin - Nebraska (10) Ohio State - only losses were to Elite 3 Michigan State - Ohio State (13), Northwestern (8) Purdue - Michigan State (1), Wisconsin (11), Northwestern (5) Northwestern - Wisconsin (4), Minnesota (22), Nebraska (11) Rutgers - Wisconsin (5), Michigan State (3), Ohio State (5) Nebraska - Purdue (3), Minnesota (6) Minnesota - Wisconsin (6), Purdue (4), Ohio State (10) Illinois - Rutgers (8), Purdue (12), Northwestern (13), Minnesota (10), Wisconsin (22), Nebraska (12) Indiana - Rutgers (12), Michigan State (2), Purdue (1), Illinois (33), Ohio State (31) Maryland - Indiana (14), Ohio State (35), Wisconsin (35), Michigan State (23), Northwestern (22), Rutgers (18) What I take away from this is that the Big10's lower teams are all capable of winning, but are sometimes also hit by a tough schedule and some very narrow losses. Indiana had a couple of close losses early on - then once Washington went out of the lineup they seemed to fold in the later part of their season. Nebraska went 3-5 but could have easily been 5-3. Several of Purdue's wins were close (by 3, 4, 1) I don't know what the answer is for IU - but I don't think they are far off from a shot at the middle of the Big10 depending on their schedule. As for wrestlers leaving - it could be blamed on coaching staff, but there are so many other factors (academics, social/personal, results versus expectations) that could also lead to these young people deciding there may be greener pastures elsewhere.

  29. Just a reminder for next season, kids weigh what they weigh. The key word in honor system weigh ins is “honor”. Be the example. Win or lose honorably. It’s pretty simple.
