  1. Please dont take this wrong but what is wrong with shaking hands before the dual at face offs, then you shake hands before the match but if you watch college they shake hands after the dual is over. This going over to other side after match is not a big deal. It’s competition and after the dual is over you shake hands and say good go!

  2. ...and it gives us all a very good understanding why teams would leave good tournaments such as the EMD Holiday Tournament and the Al Smith for the opportunity to compete in a tournament of this level. Good luck to all of the Indiana boys!!! I'm sure you will make us all proud.

  4. Write up from Editor Josh Lowe of Intermat.com : The 57th edition of the nation’s oldest continuous running “holiday” tournament returns to Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School on Friday, December 29 and Saturday, December 30. The field will feature 47 teams in total, including 20 programs from northeast Ohio battling it out with a diverse field of teams from across Ohio, three from the state of Michigan, and two from Indana Featured from the teams this field are 157 wrestlers that have previously appeared in a state wrestling tournament. This includes fourteen wrestlers that were state champions in 2017: Jacob Lagoa (Ashtabula St. John); Julian Tagg (Brecksville); David Crawford (Canfield); Jacob and Jordan Decatur (CVCA); Ben Kamali, Kevon Davenport, and Cameron Amine (Detroit Catholic Central, Mich.); Zach Bellaire, Tyler Orrison, and Brandon Whitman (Dundee, Mich.); Brendon Fenton (Elyria); Kevon Freeman (Lake Catholic); and Austin Boone (Lowell, Mich.) An additional seven wrestlers finished second at their state tournament last year: Josh Edmond (Detroit Catholic Central, Mich.), Zach Shupp (Fairfield), Gio DiSabato (Hilliard Davidson), Colt Yinger (Nelsonville-York), Kris Rumph (Portage, Ind.), along with Gage Grunden and Sandro Ramirez (Wauseon). In all 79 members of the field placed in the top eight of their state tournament bracket last year. Seeking to repeat as team champion is Elyria, which had earned a third straight runner-up finish in the Division I state tournament at the end of last season, and a third straight semifinal (or better) finish in the state dual team event. The Pioneers enter the season ranked No. 38 in the country anchored by two-time state champion Brendon Fenton; returning state placers Mick Burnett, Dylan Shawver, and Josh Breeding; 2016 state placer Farouq Muhammed; and two-time state qualifier Matt Zuckerman. However, tournament debutant Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) is the field’s highest ranked team at No. 10 in the country. The Shamrocks feature a trio of two-time state champions in Ben Kamali, Cameron Amine, and Kevon Davenport. Other key returnees include state runner-up Josh Edmond; returning state medalists Devin Johnsen, Rhett Newton, and Derek Gilcher; along with three additional state qualifiers. They are the defending dual team state champions in Michigan’s big-school division, earning that distinction in five of the last eight seasons. The host school, Brecksville, is ranked No. 16 nationally. Last season the Bees were quarterfinalists in the team state tournament, which broke a four year streak of semifinal (or better) advancements. At the individual tournament, they finished fifth, marking a fifth consecutive year of finishing inside the top five. The squad for head coach Todd Haverdill is led by returning state champion Julian Tagg, two-time state placer Gabe Tagg, state placers Marco Regalbuto and Zach D’Anna, state qualifiers Jimmy Carmany and Ethan Hatcher, along with incoming freshman Victor Voinovich. Two other teams in this field are ranked nationally, No. 30 Lowell (Mich.) and No. 36 Portage (Ind.). The Red Arrows won a fourth straight state dual team title last season. Individually they return state champion Austin Boone, two-time state placers Avery Mutschler and David Kruse, state placers Jeff Leach and Connor Nugent, along with five other state qualifiers. Tournament debutant Portage finished fifth in their single-class state tournament last season. The Indians are led by a pair of multi-time state placers in Kris Rumph and Kasper McIntosh; additional past or returning state placers include Jacob Moran, Brock Peele, and Colin Poynter; while Jeremy Torres and Anthony Maceo qualified for state last year Eight teams in this field finished as champion or runner-up in at least one of the dual meet or individual bracket state tournaments last year: Canfield (Division II individual runner-up), Detroit Catholic Central (Mich. – Division 1 state champions), Dundee (Mich. – Division 3 state runner-up), Elyria (Division I individual runner-up), Lowell (Mich. – Division 2 state champions), Milan Edision (Division III dual meet champions), Tuslaw (Division III dual meet runner-up), and Wauseon (Division II dual meet runner-up). On the individual side of things, five wrestlers will seek to repeat as champions in this year’s edition of the Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament (BIHT): Jordan Decatur, Kevon Freeman, Jake Marsh (Marysville), Brandon Whitman, and Antonio McCloud (Cincinnati Elder). Nine additional wrestlers seek to move one step higher on the podium after finishing as runner-up in a previous year: Julian Tagg, Dylan Shawver, Jordan Rosselli (Olentangy Liberty), Sandro Ramirez, and two-time Colt Yinger; runners-up from 2015 include Marco Regalbuto and Connor Brady (Olentangy Liberty); while Matt Cardello (CVCA) and Austin Murphy (Elder) were runner-up finishers in 2014. The BIHT would like to welcome all 47 teams to the event, in particular the eight teams making their overall debut in this event. Those include Avon (Ind.), Bridgeport, Claymont, Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), Indian Valley, Portage (Ind.), Rootstown, and Tuslaw. A cordial welcome back is also given to two squads returning back to the event after hiatus: Keystone and Perry (Lake County).

  6. By the way I’m all for sportsmanship in every way but you have two great programs here that battled their butts off. Tensions get high... etc. I just personally think we’ve hugged and shake hands enough before the match. Shake opponents hand and go to your corner and shake everyone’s hand afterwards. We shake hands after every match with opponents coach but not offended if they dont

  7. I'd love more details on this, 1000 new wrestlers. Are they from big, small, medium schools? Are they freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors? Are they new to the sport or coming back out after sabatical? Etc.... 1000 new wrestlers is a lot and good as long as it's across the board.

  15. As a coach I never thought it as necessary to shake hands with the coaches, but as a parent I always demanded it from my kid. It was a preference of how I wanted to raise my kid.

  17. Got a interesting email from our IHSAA Comish today. Wrestling numbers have increased dramitically this year. SchYear Gender # Wrestlers 2013-14 F 47 2013-14 M 6372 2014-15 F 50 2014-15 M 6200 2015-16 F 54 2015-16 M 6042 2016-17 F 114 2016-17 M 5853 2017-18 F 168 2017-18 M 6825

  18. I don't think the increase necessarily has to be a product of just one cause. Not only has the uniform started to change, and no matter how much i hate the 2 piece im sure their are a lot more kids willing to wear it, but we have also seen a huge increase of the number of girls that are joining the teams since the girls state was introduced. Then we had at least 2 or 3 schools that added wrestling to their school this year. I'm sure all of these have played factors in the increase. Now with that being said, I've seen a lot more ff this year than ever before. I don't think dividing the compitition into large and small schools will help anything. If a kid wants to be good, he will find a way. I think there is a validity to some of the better kids at small schools transferring to larger schools. It just makes since that the smaller the student count, the smaller the numbers in the room, which means it will be less likely that there would be another kid at their skill level around their size to push them during practice. So, the better kid transfers to have partners in his room. I think we can lower the chances of the kid transferring, if the IHSAA would do away with some of the rules about where and with whom a kid can train during the season. We are one of the few states that have these strict rules. If they can train with other schools kids, which most likely will be the same kids they train with in the off season, then not only will we see a continued increase in talent through out the season, but it will lessen the need for higher caliber kids to feel they have to go to a larger school. Yes it is a wrestling TEAM but like it or not its still an individual sport. " whend you're out their wrestling with someone stronger and faster than you, there's not a whole heck of a lot a team can do for you". Sorry, couldn't help myself

  25. I would venture to guess that your V2 team has more kids than many of the V1 teams they face. So by inviting Carrol's V2 schools would be getting more matches for their kids, and in turn fewer FFs. I also understand the stigma associated with a V2 loss and wasnt trying to say it was completely without merit. More a matter of how much merit. At some level arent we placating a loser mentality? I dont say that to be cruel, it just doesn't seem like the kid was all that into wrestling if he quits because he got beat by Perry or Portages V2. The reason the V2 beats the V1 is because he's put more time and effort into it (athletic freaks aside). So taking away opportunities from V2 kids seems all stick and no carrot to me.

Always some good teams and matchups. It’s my favorite tournament. John McKee was a coach for me in football and wrestling. Was a great friend and has a great family. Coach Gard does a great job and for a bonus.....hands down has the best coaches hospitality room in the state! It’s like Thanksgiving Buffett in December.

I'm on board with wanting to go somewhere for more competition I just assumed they'd stick around since they haven't won it in the last 9 years. 2009-Champs EMD ... Avon 5th 2010-Champs EMD ... Avon 4th 2011-Champs EMD ... Avon 6th 2012-Champs Union County ... Avon IDK but it's outside the top 3 because EMD and Franklin were really close to Union 2013-Champs Union County ... Avon 8th 2014-Champs Union County ... Avon 5th 2015-Champs EMD ... Avon 3rd 2016-Champs EMD ... Avon 2nd 2017-Champs Union County ... Avon 3rd

  30. Exactly how this data is collected over time is essential to its interpretation. Even still it will likely be multi-factorial in casues.
