    Team State 2023

Only in wrestling, do we get to hear about the unfortunate larger schools. Every other sport its the unfortunate little schools that get don't have the numbers, the facilities, or athletes to compete. As the math shows that a higher percentage of the bigger schools get to compete at Team State than the little ones the way it is. So lets kick out 2 smaller schools out to let the bigger ones in. Argument would be "bigger schools get their way in every other sport, why not wrestling?" Let's face it, can't make everyone happy and some teams are going to be allowed in and others unfortunately will be left out. We have already increased the number of teams competing for a state championship x4, which is great for the sport. It's funny some solutions to this particular "who's in, who's out" is to go back to something similar to the old "open" 8-team Team state. Do another tournament, the same weekend for the team's that don't make it to state. It can be "open" or "classed" and more teams can compete that day. Good for the sport? sure. Does it allow every team that wants to compete at state to participate in the team state tourney? no. Again, not everyone will be happy. Allow 12 teams to compete--make the day last forever and water down the competition--and the #13 team in each class will be upset. Let's face it, the way this Team State tourney is done is pretty great the way it is and I believe everyone leaves each class' tourney confident the best team that day won and a team that unfortunately wasn't invited wouldn't have been champ if only they could have attended.

There are ways to word an argument and then there are ways to argue aimlessly so much of this has been beaten to death through so many threads with so many good posts by the involved parties detailing why decisions were made. I do not have the time or energy to explain why we’ve made the changes we’ve made. we used to have 36 teams, then we split 3A into two and now we have 40 teams. And now that’s not enough.

Also you have to factor in the size of the players in football. If you put 2A MD up against WC or Penn you would see a VAST size difference among players. Wrestling is a different animal, same size contestants. Also if you put MD where they align in the wrestling team state there will be no contest. I don't make the decisions coach Schaefer would be the one to make the decisions but why would MD spend the time there when they could go find better competition somewhere else? I think a better option would be to have an Open Class. Then have the designated size schools in their classes. That is if MD no longer had the option to move up.

    NCAA DI Preview

By Blaze Lowery Indiana University The Hoosiers of Indiana University are stocking up on more talent for the upcoming 2022-2023 season. Signing 11 recruits, this team is beginning to shape itself into a bit of a shock for the Big Ten Conference. Coming off a not-so-great ending to their previous season, the Hoosiers are in search of redemption. As they bring back many starters for this upcoming season, Head Coach Angel Escobedo and the squad will have the opportunity to prove that IU isn’t just a basketball school. With the majority of the new recruiting class from out of state, one familiar name that rings a bell in southern Indiana is Gabe Sollars from Evansville Mater Dei. Having a great end to his high school career as a two-time state champion, Sollars could be the missing piece to the puzzle in Bloomington. Also joining the Hoosiers is two-time placer, Ben Phillips of Charlestown, who had a record of 142-22 throughout his high school career. Transfer, Clayton Fielden of Garrett, who has seen some mat time for Army, comes back to his home state to compete for the Hoosiers as well. Fielden could potentially crack the Hoosier lineup this season as he takes on Robert Major of Carmel for the 165lbs spot. Bringing back the bulk of their starters from last season only gives this team more time to grow and compete at a higher level. Returning this season is Donnell Washington of Portage, who was the only wrestler to score for the Hoosiers at the NCAA DI National Championships. Having been ranked as high as #6 in the nation last season, he is someone that is bound to make sparks fly, especially after hearing he is dropping down to 174lbs for the Hoosiers. This spot, currently held by Nick South of Columbus East, is going to make for an interesting curveball in their lineup. Escobedo indicates that although he thinks both men could potentially be All-Americans, championship teams have guys at the same weight class more frequently than not. The infamous brother duo, Graham and Cayden Rooks of Columbus East, have been more than entertaining throughout their wrestling careers. These guys are both high scoring wrestlers who always seem to pull off some big upsets year after year. The Rooks brothers both fell short of their goals last season, but it only gave them more motivation to grind this offseason. Escobedo has been assisting the brothers’ transition to “approach the sport differently this offseason,” which has made these men hungry and excited for what their future holds. Happy to bring back Jacob Moran of Portage at 125lbs, the Hoosiers are going to be just fine to start out their duals this season. With multiple wins over ranked opponents, and being ranked the first half of last season, it is Moran’s time to make a statement. Like most of his teammates, this offseason has been a time for him to refine and build on his skills. Do not sleep on Nick Willham of Greenwood at 195lbs. Although Willham does not have too many collegiate accolades to date, he is a “workhorse in the room,” says Escobedo. Willham has been making himself known around the nation with multiple overtime matches with All-American’s in his weight class. Escobedo also points out how those matches only led to more confidence for Willham to reach All-American status. “The sky is the limit,” states Escobedo. Returning to Bloomington, as an associate head coach, Mike Dixon 01’. Dixon having a lofty coaching resume will make for an impactful addition to the Hoosier coaching staff. Another coach added is volunteer assistant coach and three-time All-American at Nebraska, C.J. Red. Red, a four-time Indiana state champion, has a vested interest in the future of the Hoosier wrestling program. This is truly a year for IU to take the next step and possibly make some magic happen. Purdue University Purdue University continues to churn talent and develop Indiana recruits into national qualifiers. Bringing on seven newcomers, these recruits are entering a program that could finish top 15 in the country. The Boilermakers bring on a very skilled recruiting class, with an already young team as it is. Being in the room since June, these freshmen who came in as boys, are going to enter their season as men states Assistant Coach Jake Sueflohn. First recruit up is Brody Baumann of Evansville Mater Dei, who was a two-time Indiana state champion. He is a proven winner and has shown he is ready to compete at the next level. Up next is Ike Ruble of Bellmont, who is likely hungrier after his season did not go as planned. It is likely that Ruble is still growing and could end up at a much higher weight class than intended. Coach Sueflohn also sheds light on Ruble’s “attitude and positive energy” that lifts the room up. Ruble finished his high school career at 133-10 and is likely going to crack lineup in his time as a Boilermaker. Kade Law of Columbus East was the guy the Olympians could always count on when they needed it most. Being a 2021 IHPO Champion, Law has always been a well-rounded competitor. Brac Hooper of Zionsville is the last recruit of Indiana natives. This guy always knew how to scrap but only started to fill out by the end of his high school career. It would not be a surprise if we saw Hooper become West Lafayette’s secret weapon. Some of the success from this previous year’s tournaments was from #10 Thomas Penola of Zionsville. Penola, a three-time NCAA national qualifier, is settling into his redshirt senior season nicely. Always willing to do whatever it takes, Penola has been “opening his offensive attacks this offseason,” says Sueflohn. Although his signature underhook is nothing to shy away from, development this offseason will push him to that All-American status at the tournament this year. Cooper Noehre of Greenfield Central has the chance to solidify himself at 165lbs. After he wrestled in a few varsity duals in the previous season at 157lbs, he has proven himself more than capable of holding his own for the Boilermakers. Potentially cracking lineup at 149lbs is Jaden Reynolds of Avon. Reynolds being a three-time place winner for the Orioles has proven himself as a viable option for the Boilermakers. Having a few solid wins under his belt his redshirt season, Reynolds is continuing to build on his already solid foundation. Someone else really filling out is Indiana state champion, Tristan Ruhlman of Bloomington South, who is likely to see time at heavyweight this season. This team understand how to put its nose to the grindstone and really make it count. Excited is an understatement when talking about Purdue wrestling.

One thing you will discover about the the Hoosier program is that they don’t have a person on the inside offering any information. I would go a long way in getting more people to follow up on the team. Even if it’s this.

    Team State 2023

For what it is worth, I agree with your sentiment about wanting to give more teams more opportunities. I believe the addition of this version Team State, run by the IHSWCA, has been an amazing addition and has done just that, to give teams more opportunities. I personally do not mind that it is not IHSAA sponsored and think I think that it is run more effectively with the IHSWCA than it would with the IHSAA anyways. If the venue allows for 12, then I suppose I agree this could be beneficial but just wanted to give you some stats. 4a - 38 total schools (21% of schools qualify for team state) 3a - 56 total schools (14% of schools qualify for team state) 2a - 85 total schools (14% of schools qualify for team state) 1a - 85 total schools (14% of schools qualify for team state) *Numbers may be slightly off as I just counted the qualification sheet on the Team State leaderboard page. EMD and Cathedral are counted in that 4a total above. To your point they "take" 2 spots every year. If you remove them, and only consider that 6 schools make it out of the 36, then that is 17% of schools that qualify for Team state. I agree that if they can do 12 schools, then why not. However, you do have to remember that 3a + 4a is basically just one class split into 2. When you look at it that way, that class gets 16 qualifiers for Team State. It is very unfortunate when you have potentially your best team in school history and you are being bumped to 4a when you could potentially qualify for 3a but they do have to draw the line somewhere. Again, I agree with your sentiment but just wanted to throw some numbers out there. I think this event is great and I am sure the powers that be appreciate any input for this event as well. Each year they seem very open to changes and constructive criticism to make this event even better.

I can think of at least three maybe four schools in our conference right now and possibly even five that would fit in the 4A bracket of the team State wrestling. Castle beat MD 2 years in a row several years ago as did Evansville Reitz again several years ago. But for the most part it's been all MD for the last 40 years in this section of the state. My answer to your dilemma is to create an Open Class where an unlimited amount of schools can enter. After that the 4A schools can have their class the 3A schools can have their class and so on and so forth but to alienate Cathedral and MD because they are private says to me you don't want to wrestle them because you don't want to lose to them. You can run the recruiting angle all you want but any kid anywhere in the state of Indiana is allowed to go to any school they want to they just have to get there on time pretty much every day. The recruiting bias should be dead by now. If your kids want to go to MD or Cathedral or Indianapolis Park Tudor they are allowed to go there with no restriction upon recruiting. Now the deal that happened with Christian Carol was one bad deal that was bad blood between the old athletic office and his new school but hopefully there are no issues this year for him. As far as showcasing one team over another think of it this way if you are playing travel baseball and you have an A tournament a B tournament and a C tournament and you are going to have a "showcase tournament" aren't you going to put your best teams in the A class?

Consider MD and Cathedral to have moved up due to a similar "success factor" that other sports currently have. It totally makes sense for me to have the 4A champ to likely be the best team in the state, no matter class. There will be years that this isn't true but for the most part, it is. Honestly, no way to make everyone happy. There will be a line drawn somewhere and those below the line are likely to be upset. When there was a single team state champ, the #9 team was upset they didn't make it, but all had to qualify--a line was drawn. Now we have 32 teams fighting for 4 state championships, yet we now have even more teams (likely none that would win) upset they didn't make the cut. Just because some aren't happy, I would not make a change that keeps the top 4-5 teams from competing for the largest class championship.

I get what you’re saying now in regards to MD… im ok if a school “wrestles” up, but I feel if they choose to wrestle up they should stay up for a “contracted number of years” …which I believe MD stays up every year anyway.

  16. Carson Brewer is slated to be the starter again at 197 for Ohio U again. Slivka is moving up to the starting 165 spot. Pretty sure that they will be starting their seasons at the App State open in a couple weeks, followed by Navy Classic, then Cliff Keen out in Vegas.

I understand what you are saying but I disagree with any talk of putting MD, Cathedral, or any other private school in their own class just because someone thinks they can't beat them because they are a private school. Wrestling is the fairest sport there is there are only two contestants and they both weigh the same amount. If you want to create an open class for the team title I would be okay with that but do not alienate the private schools just because the public schools don't want to wrestle them.

I don't think you know exactly where I'm coming from. I'm referring to only MD when I talk about a 500 kid school competing with a 1200 kid school. A team that willingly goes to the top class to wrestle. If someone is saying we should have a private school class because their school is 2 or even 10x the size of MD and they can't beat MD I say "What more do you want MD to do?" As far as your situation goes you should do right for you and your team (you are probably already doing that). In general I would not expect a 500 kid school to jump up and wrestle Ben Davis or Penn or WC at team state. I say don't mess with the system that is in place unless IHSAA wants to take it and do a class team state as long as a school can willingly move up. However I don't see IHSAA taking it, they already had team state at one time and then stopped doing it for a number of reasons, that subject is probably best for another thread.

I'll tell you what go make a division for whatever criteria you want. Put whatever schools want to be in this division, be it a huge school that is in the middle of nowhere or the small school that can't find the right competition or whatever criteria you want to make whatever school you want a state champ. Put all of them together and see who comes out on top and call them a state champ. But I can guarantee you if you pull Cathedral or MD out and put them in a private school division they will not be satisfied calling themselves a state champ unless they wrestle the top schools in the state. And I would bet that Crown Point Brownsburg or Center Grove isn't going to call themselves a state champ unless they wrestle Cathedral or MD. If you want to make it as Fair as you can for those that can't quite get there go make a division for them and leave us alone.

OMG! Just go wrestle! Quit whining if a kid goes to a public or private school. You guys should know by now it doesn't matter what school you go to it matters how much off season work you're doing. 4 momths in a HS room isn't going to make a state champ wrestler or team. Look at the top tier guys and schools they are not just wrestling in season. I cannot believe we have people complaining from a 1200 person School that a little 500 person School is beating them. Tell your kids to get to work you are not going to get there by just wrestling in season. And if they're better than you then so be it if someone is better than us we don't complain that they should be in a different class we are going all the way to the top to find the best competition we can find. What else do you want from a 500 kid school? I thought wrestlers didn't make excuses!

  25. Whiteland “unofficially” moved from 3a to 4a, right at 2000 students. No seniors on the roster, SHOULD have 7 semi-state qualifiers (out of “category 6” Mooresville sectional and regional) would likely have enough points to qualify for 3a team state but possibly not 4a.

  26. The IDOE released their numbers from the most recent count about a week ago. The IHSAA is expected to release their data in the next couple of weeks. Here is the IDOE data: Finally released by the DOE. Schools with an * do not report enrollments to the DOE, so their numbers are just what the IHSAA has in their directory and may not be current. Enrollments only include students in grades 9-12. Probably not perfect, but it should give an idea what the next alignment would be based off of.2 schools, Purdue Polytechnic and MTI School of Knowledge, will become tourney eligible in 23-24, so they are included. The two listed as ineligible cannot play until 24-25 or 25-26, so they will not be included in the next alignment.1 Carmel 53272 Ben Davis 45573 Warren Central 38454 North Central (Indpls.) 37095
