maligned
Wow...no shortage of outstanding wrestler candidates at the Al Smith: #6 Tylor Triana comes in as the 4-seed and takes out state #'s 2 and 4 on the way to the title at 120. #4 Graham Rooks takes out the guy a lot of people thought to be the clear state favorite in #1 Cummings to win at 126. Unranked sophomore 5-seed Conner Gimson of Jimtown continues his unbeaten season by sticking state #5 Tolin and then upsetting #4 Combest to win it at 132. At 170 unranked, UNSEEDED Thomas Penola of Zionsville, who went 23-12 with a first round semi-state loss last year, rolls through #12 Rader, takes out #6 Swank after losing to him by 6 earlier in the year, beats #7 Malone, and then wins a thriller over #11 Fattore (who had beaten a hurt #3 Baumgartner earlier) in the final. Elkhart Memorial's #4 Goering ends up 7th in this insane weight class with Penola (who???) at the top of the heap. Wow. #2 Andrew Davison just looks unbelievable: 37 seconds, 45 seconds, tech, pin over #7 Hankenson, major over #3 Eli. Finally, we have to mention the big guy, #10 Jessie Lawson of Carroll, who starts the tournament as the 4-seed and winds up with big-time pins over #5 and returning state runner-up Samuels in the semi's and #6 and serious state title contender Streck in the final. Take your pick! Edited December 30, 2016 by maligned
RichardMowery
Rooks imo that kid hasn't missed a beat all year. I said it watching him this off season he will win a state title this year!
mathewsz7
If I had to pick 1, it would have to be Rooks, to come out a winner of any bracket that includes Colton Cummings, I feel that has to be the biggest win, even tho there were a ton of major, some minor upsets in this year's AL Smith... Y2CJ41
Due to some shenanigans the outstanding wrestler is given to the person with the most pins in least amount of time in the championship bracket. However, this year...a runner-up had that criteria. Thus a little discussion took place and Jessie Lawson ended up with the award.
MCKAJC
Conner Gimson @132 looked really good both days he stood out. I'd have given him OW very solid in every position as a soph. not sure there was a close second for me regardless of tournament choice. TeamGarcia
1. Rooks , most impressive win 2. Gimson 3. Penola 126 this year is going to so fun to watch . By far the most stacked weight class. Top 5 are pretty gifted wrestlers .
BrennanFan
Rooks for sure. Spanks Delapena and wins a hard fought battle over #1 Cummings.

ontherise219
Rooks for sure. Spanks Delapena and wins a hard fought battle over #1 Cummings.I wouldn't say spanks won on a questionable take down. But he did wrestle very well. throw45
TeamGarcia
Now the question comes does Cummings drop to 120 ? Im sure he's not 100% wrestling today at 126. To me on the Cube video he looked small compared to others but....... they all do from like the roof camera . Thor
Y2CJ41
Cummings was smaller than Rooks, but he wasn't that small. He was just as strong as Rooks and even guys like Becker. He'll be fine, he's a tough kid and coming back 6 months post op from ACL surgery to try to be the 4th Al Smith 4-timer is pretty impressive. throw45
XCard
Let's stop diminishing Rooks win, he beat the top 2 guys at the weight today. Period. My hats off to him, he wrestled well and proved today what most of us already knew, he is a top contender at any weight he wrestles. eastdad18, throw45, busstogate and 1 other
Pantherman95
I'd say or Rooks for beating a 2 time state champ, or Penola who was unranked and UNSEEDED winning it all.. Has that ever happened. 170 was loaded!!
ontherise219
Graham is legit. He has been legit since the first math he had in high school. Mulkey has gotten the better of him the last couple of times. But Cummings Has beat graham the last couple matches too. Today that didn't matter. Yes Blake will be #1 at 126 now probably but like a lot of the weights this year anyone can be under the lights in Indy. throw45
Y2CJ41
We could see a Rooks/Mulkey vs. Cummings quarter-final at state...OUCH!

busstogate
Big congrats to both Jimtown and Prairie Heights. They were major players among the big schools. Anthony Snyder, awood2 and rookie78
Caleb Spires
If we're doing this off the "shock" factor, it goes to Penola with Gimson veeeerrry close behind. But I'm doing it off of who I think was most dominant overall, so I give it to Andrew Davison. He handled a pretty tough field.
