  1. The tournament is seeded after weigh-ins.  Given the travel distance for some teams, this was more ideal given that it is an eight team tournament with most kids having head to head already and avoids a seeding meeting on an alternate day.

I am personally selfish and miss the free meal I get attending the seeding meeting however!

Can someone who cares about CP wrestling please organize a group of influencers to convince their program to come show their talents at Team State once or twice during this upcoming run? It would be a real shame not to see fully where they stack up as a duals team while they have all this talent over the next number of years.

They went a couple years ago and pretty sure Lorek wants to accept any invitation they are given, but I am not sure if they made the vote in spot for the tournament since.

  3. I don’t think we would have the venue we have if the IHSAA did not care about wrestling.  I am willing to bet that revenue wise, our State Tournament does pretty well for them in its current format.  I am sure it being picked up for a Live broadcast helps with revenue as well.

There in lies the problem I feel. Their thought is probably, if it ain’t broke, pun intended, don’t fix it.

I do think it has been brought to light before that our coaches association sometimes struggles with getting the IHSAA to take them seriously with changes.  Maybe we have to think outside the box to get our changes made to our tournament. What that is I don’t know, but hopefully moving forward we can see some steps being taken in a positive direction.

A few numbers to consider from the East Chicago Central sectional, which saw a ton of FFs.

Merrillville cruised to victory in racking up the highest team score state-wide, with 12 champions and then 2nd place for the two wrestlers that didn't win their weight class. Only complete line-up of the ten team field.

103 and 195 had just two wrestlers apeice for their classes.

Hammond Gavit brought 12 wrestlers and had a champion at 160 in Jaymeire Johnson. One wrestler appeared to not make weight in the 195 weight class however, which as said previously left that class with just two wrestlers.

Munster brought ten wrestlers, but I don't believe they have any kids ranked in SS...definitely a down year for the Mustangs but it should be noted the football team actually cancelled their JV season because of numbers. It appears to be a trying time in athletics for a proud school.

Hammond Morton usually brings in at least a couple hammers and Reese Rodriguez proved that correct as the senior won by MD over Pejovski of Merrillville @ 132 pounds. Morton brought 8 wrestlers.

    Numbers for the other participants...

    Hammond Clark - 8 wrestlers
    Whiting - 6
    East Chicago - 4

Gary West Side, Hammond Bishop Noll, and Hammond High brought just 3 wrestlers apeice.

There were 4 originally seeded at 195, I think one was scratched at weigh-ins and the other was DQd for Flagrant, that is why he was removed and all his points taken away.

I can see this Sectional being mixed up in the future. There are rumors of the School City of Hammond downsizing to only 2 High Schools instead of the current 4. Bishop Noll was supposed to be JV only this year, with the low participation numbers, I am not too sure how much longer they will remain a program.  Jamal Lawrence is coaching at West Side, so it will be exciting to see if he can revive the program. I know I have already seen him around the youth tournaments.  Removing Lake Central from this Sectional really hurt the depth as they would always bring a full team.  This Sectional has never been one of the stronger ones, but it always has produced some solid individuals and most teams would bring close to full line-ups.  This was the first time that I can remember that we did not have at least one weight class with a first round match. Lowest number of participants I have seen in my time with this Sectional, hopefully in the next couple years we can get the participation up to what it once used to be.

I’m not a coach just a fan, so not much I can do other than point it out each year.

i think it would be fair in those sectionals with 10-11 teams to seed the top 5 or 6 then place the remainder of lower seeds in pigtail matches against each other

The Top 6 are seeded at Sectionals.  Then the next two available wrestlers are drawn into what would essentially be the #7 and #8 seed.  The remaining wrestlers are distributed evenly to keep the bracket balanced and to assure that everyone has a chance to score in the first round.  Of course this was the pre non scoring first round days that this was put into place.  With the first round not being scored, there is some sense to placing the remaining unseeded wrestlers against each other in the pig tail matches.  The reasoning behind a full wrestle back though I would imagine would be the risk of someone having more than 6 matches in one day.  This is not perfect system in place now, but I do believe it works in the vast majority of Sectionals.  If the brackets were not balanced, then there may have been an error in how they were drawn and should be corrected before Saturday.

Do you want the coaches to sit there and watch each kid eat each bite of food?

There is clearly a system in place. Is it a perfect system? No... there is no perfect system.

The kids know the system. Some kids choose to pack on weight between matches or weigh ins. They then choose to “kill” themselves to get down to weight before the next Weigh-in. They work the system.

Im sure that 99 percent of coaches follow the rules and guidelines as best as they can.

Lets stop blaming coaches. I would say if something “unhealthy” is going on the parents and mostly the kid (yes the kid) is to blame. You gotta figure that most high school varsity wrestlers are a year or two from being out on their own. They need to make better live choices.

Just curious Jenny... what did you see that was so out of line, that it prompted you to make a profile and post on this topic? Lots of times I see post like this when parents finds out that a better wrestler decides to go down to their kid’s weight class and takes the spot.

Do you guys weigh your kids every day? Just curious, if you see a kid working the system, do you feel it is the responsibility of the Coach to intervene?

  7. Everyone is inevitably going to make some type of weight cut in this sport, however I do agree with you Jenny that the extreme cut from kids should be stopped. Most of those guys that are cutting that much weight are probably still a top tier kid in either weight class.  So why go thru the misery, and it is misery, of cutting all that weight.  I can tell you from my personal experience, experience with other athletes, and with my own son, that my preference is going to be wrestle up the weight class.  Feel good at practice all 5 days.  Optimize that training time and let the weight come off progressively. Of course as mentioned here too, hit that weight room, because there is nothing that replaces strength at any level.  I also disagree that there is no pressure from coaches and parents for most kids to make the cut and the decision is solely theirs.  Maybe they are not aggressively telling them to make the cut, but not advising them otherwise when we know their decision make that cut, is a poor one, is just as bad.  As Coaches it is just as much our responsibility to correct these bad decisions as it is to correct their wrestling technique.

The officials did a great job. 2 of the best in Indiana.

It's a shame though only one of them is State "Eligible".

Oh, and an absolute fantastic job by Joe Caprino and everyone involved in putting this event together.

The Illinois state tournament has three separate broadcasts, one for each class. I'm surprised Iowa doesn't have a broadcast like that.

I do believe these are taped and played later, each separately.  Looks like Iowa does a live broadcast of the finals.  Best way they can show them all at the same time I imagine.  On a side note, if they just went to ONE class, this would not be an issue, maybe they should just work harder at their broadcast.
